Effect of fipronil on the sugarcane internode borer (Chilo sacchariphagus indicus Kapur) in Sri Lanka
2008
Kumarasinghe, N. C.
Two different forms of the insecticide Fipronil (Phenyl pyrozole); Regent SC (suspension concentrate) and Prince GR (granules) were tested at a field trial for a period of twelve months, on the plant crop of the variety SLI 121. The analysis of results showed that the treatments of Prince 18 kg/h, 22.5kg/h and Regent 1L/h are significantly effective in controlling of C. saccharphagus. Moreover, it was determined that Prince 18 kg/h and Regent 1.25L/h enhanced the weight (yield) of sugarcane by increasing the number of tillers. Therefore, with regard to maximum control and the maximum yield, Fipronil in its granular form of Prince at the recommended dosage of 18K/h is more suitable for controlling of the internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus. The above application which is compatible with other control practices for sugarcane pests is advantageous to the growers as the expenditure on insecticide may be compensated through higher yield.
