Síntesis de óxido de grafeno a partir del coque residual del petróleo

El coque es un subproducto de la refinación del petróleo utilizado principalmente por la industria de la siderúrgica en la fundición del hierro. Durante su proceso de combustión, se generan gases de efecto invernadero como CO2, SOx y NOx. Adicionalmente, al ser un material particulado su acumulación en extensas áreas a cielo abierto ha generado problemas socio-ambiental; por lo cual, se hace necesaria la búsqueda de nuevas estrategias de almacenamiento y reutilización. En este sentido, considerando que el coque está compuesto por el carbón laminar y grafito, lo convierte en un óptimo precursor para la síntesis de materiales a base de carbono como el óxido de grafeno (OG), que a su vez es un material de partida para la obtención del grafeno o óxido de grafeno reducido, empleando en diversas áreas tecnológicas debido a sus novedosas propiedades. Algunos autores han realizado esta síntesis sometiendo al coque a diversos tratamientos entre los 1000°C, 1200°C hasta los 3000°C, generando separación de compuestos de carbón amorfo hasta obtener una estructura grafítica, conllevando a un mayor gasto energético, económico y quizás emisión de gases como COx, NOx y SOx. Por consiguiente, en el presente trabajo se sintetizó OG, a partir de una muestra de coque con y sin tratamiento térmico a 1200°C, con previa pulverización y eliminación de residuos de compuestos poliaromáticos no anclados a la estructura ordenada mediante tolueno y diclorometano, esto, mediante el método de Hummer modificado. Para determinar la similitud entre los materiales sintetizados y el OG obtenido a partir del grafito, los productos se caracterizaron por UV-Vis mostrando bandas de absorbancia en 240 nm, correspondiente a las transiciones de conjugación C C de π π* presentes en el OG. Los resultados obtenidos por espectroscopía FTIR-ATR evidenciaron bandas similares correspondientes a grupos epoxi, eter, hidroxilos, carbonilos, grupos aromáticos, carboxilos. Mediante difracción de Rayos X (DRX) se obtuvieron mejores resultados para el coque sin tratamiento térmico, obteniendo diversos niveles de oxidación laminar de carbono, representado mediante picos estrechos entre 8 y 12° 2theta. Los resultados obtenidos indicaron la eficacia del Método de Hummer Modificado en la síntesis del OG a partir del coque sin tratamiento térmico obteniendo mejore y similares resultados con respecto al OG a partir del coque tratado térmicamente ya partir del grafito.

Petroleum coke or petcoke is a by-product of oil refining used primarily by the iron and steel industry in iron smelting. During its combustion process, greenhouse gases such as CO2, SOx and NOx are generated. Additionally, since it is a particulate material, its accumulation in large open-pit areas has generated socio-environmental problems; therefore, it is necessary to search for new storage and reuse strategies. In this sense, considering that petcoke is composed of lamellar carbon and graphite, it makes it an optimal precursor for the synthesis of carbon-based materials such as graphene oxide (OG), which in turn is a starting material for obtaining graphene or reduced graphene oxide, using in various technological areas due to its novel properties. Some authors have carried out this synthesis by subjecting petcoke to various treatments between 1000 °C, 1200 °C up to 3000 °C, generating separation of amorphous carbon compounds until obtaining a graphitic structure, leading to greater energy and economic expense, and perhaps emission of gases such as COx, NOx and SOx. Therefore, in the present work, OG was synthesized from a petcoke sample with and without heat treatment at 1200 ° C, with prior spraying and removal of residues of polyaromatic compounds not anchored to the ordered structure, using toluene and dichloromethane, using the modified Hummer method. To determine the similarity between the synthesized materials and the OG obtained from the graphite, the products were characterized by UV-Vis showing absorbance bands at 240 nm, corresponding to the C = C conjugation transitions of π-π * present in the OG. The results obtained by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy showed similar bands corresponding to epoxy, ether, hydroxyl, carbonyl groups, aromatic groups, and carboxyls. Through X-ray diffraction (DRX) better results were obtained for petcoke without heat treatment, obtaining various levels of laminar carbon oxidation, represented by narrow peaks between 8 and 12 ° 2theta. The results obtained indicated the effectiveness of the Modified Hummer Method in the synthesis of OG from petcoke without heat treatment, obtaining better and similar results with respect to OG from heat-treated coke and from graphite.
