Potato virus Y (PVY) occurs worldwide in pepper. lt was first identified in the United States in the 1940s and has since been reported many times in almost every pepper cultivation region in the world. Diseases caused by the virus are more common in open-field cultivation in warm climates. PVY is an importan t pathogen of other major solanaceous crops, such as patato. tobacco, tomato, and (to a lesser extent) eggplant and petunia. Its host range is mainly confined to plants in the So lanaceae, but it can also infect members of the Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Fabaceae.
