Ekoturismens natur- och miljöpåverkan i polarområden

Tourism in the Arctic and Antarctic is increasing rapidly. In both Polar Regions, the cruise tourism is predominant. Several of the tour operators arrange trips under the banner of ecotourism, meaning that the trips should be ecologically sustainable. To ensure ecotourism standards there are different types of certifications; for cruise travels in the Arctic there is AECO (the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) certification, and for travels to the Antarctic IAATO (the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators). Promoters of ecotourism argue that these trips are important because they create support for conservation work among tourists making them “polar ambassadors”. But no journey, however “sustainably” operated, is without environmental consequences. In this project, the objective was to investigate whether ecotourism is worth its price for nature, by seeking answers to the following questions. 1)      Do the certifications fill their purpose or are they used as a form of “greenwashing”? 2)      Do the tourists become polar ambassadors? 3)      What are the environmental and natural effects of tourism in the Arctic? 4)      Is the ecotourism as operated today sustainable or are further developments necessary?   The project was partly carried out by participation in an “expedition” to the Arctic organized by a tour operator certified by AECO, during which my fellow travellers were asked to answer a couple of questionnaires. The results show that the industry is confident that it promotes conservation work, that the tourists become polar ambassadors, and that there are no visible negative ecological impacts. My observations and the questionnaires do not show that the participants automatically become polar ambassadors. However, the trip seems to affect the perceptions of first-time traveller to the Arctic, and the visitors learned new facts about the region and its wildlife. My observations during the trip also show that ecotourism-certifications do not seem to affect the travel agents work on site to any great extent and in some places land degradation is obvious. My conclusions are that ecotourism certifications have the potential to become an important tool in creating more sustainable travel, but much work remains to achieve this. Very little research has been conducted on the benefits vs. costs to the polar environment of ecotourism. Generally, much more research is needed to ensure sustainable tourism.

Turismen i Arktis och Antarktis ökar i snabb takt. I båda polarområdena är kryssningsturismen helt dominerande. Flera av företagen som arrangerar resor i regionerna bedriver ekoturism, alltså resor som ska vara ekologiskt hållbara. Det finns olika typer av ekoturismcertifieringar, för kryssningsresor i Arktis finns AECOs (the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators) märkning, och i Antarktis IAATO (the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators). Förespråkare av ekoturism hävdar att dessa resor spelar en viktig roll i bevarandearbetet, därför att de skapar ett engagemang hos turisterna som de sedan tar med sig hem. Men inget resande, hur ekologiskt man än försöker bedriva det, är utan miljökonsekvenser. I detta projekt har ambitionen varit att undersöka om ekoturismen är värd sitt pris för naturen, genom att söka svar på följande frågor.   1)      Fyller certifieringarna sitt syfte eller leder de till ”greenwashing”? 2)      Blir turister polarambassadörer? 3)      Vilka är effekterna för miljö och natur av turismen i Arktis? 4)      Är ekoturismen hållbar?   Resultaten visar att branschen är övertygad om att den är positiv för bevarandearbetet, att polarambassadörer verkligen skapas, och att de synbara ekologiska konsekvenserna är obefintliga. Mina observationer under deltagande i en expeditionskryssningsresa till Svalbard, arrangerad av ett svenskt ekoturismföretag med medlemskap i AECO, visar inte entydigt på att människor blir polarambassadörer. Däremot verkar en resa påverka förstagångsresenärens uppfattning om Arktis, och besökarna lärde sig nya saker om regionen och dess djurliv. Observationerna under resan visar också att ekocertifieringar inte verkar påverka researrangörens arbete på plats i någon större utsträckning, och att markförslitningen på vissa platser är påtaglig. De slutsatser som kan dras av arbetet är att ekoturismcertifieringar har en potential att bli ett viktigt verktyg i arbetet för ett mera hållbart resande, men det kvarstår mycket arbete för att detta skall uppnås. Väldigt lite forskning har bedrivits om ekoturismens värde och kostnader för naturen i polarområden. Mycket mer forskning behövs för att säkerställa långsiktigt hållbar turism.
