Effects of laser micro incisions on weatherability of penetrating-type wood preservative semi-transparent coatings

Laser Micro Incisions (LMI) is the perforations processed by short-pulse laser with ultraviolet wavelength. We attempted to improve the weatherability of penetrating-type wood preservative semi-transparent coating by processing LMI to wood surface beforehand. The coating weight of the penetrating-type wood preservative semi-transparent coating increased markedly to heartwood of Japanese cedar with the LMI. As a result of exposing to accelerated weathering, the color change was greatly suppressed and the water repellency was sustained for the LMI specimens, and effectiveness of LMI on the durability of coated wood was confirmed. On the other hand, deterioration of appearance could not be uniformly suppressed by merely increasing the coating weight with LMI. This is probably because the penetration capacity increased by LMI is not sufficiently filled or the coating distribution on the surface layer is not uniform. Therefore, in order to maintain aesthetic appearance, it is considered important to increase the coating weight according to LMI and distribute the coating on the surface layer sufficiently and homogeneously.
