Riesgo percibido y disposición de los veterinarios y trabajadores de salud animal para responder a la pandemia del coronavirus SARS-CoV2

La teoría de la percepción de riesgo es una herramienta que permite predecir el comportamiento de un grupo de personas frente a un escenario específico, lo cual nos ayuda a saber qué porcentaje del grupo estudiado puede rendir en dicho escenario. En América latina no se realizan con mucha frecuencia estudios que evalúen la percepción de riesgo, y no se ha realizado ninguno en el rubro veterinario. Este estudio evaluó la percepción de riesgo y la disposición de los médicos veterinarios y trabajadores del sector animales de compañía para responder a la pandemia de COVID-19 en el Perú, y además exploró las barreras y facilidades que se les presentaron para asistir al trabajo durante la pandemia. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de una encuesta en línea, enfocada a los trabajadores del sector de animales de compañía. Se realizó un análisis estadístico descriptivo sobre las variables independientes, mientras que la percepción de riesgo y de eficacia fueron evaluadas mediante el método EPPM, el cual consiste en la creación de 4 perfiles (Bajo Riesgo/Baja Eficacia, Bajo Riesgo/Alta Eficacia, Alto Riesgo/Baja Eficacia y Alto Riesgo/Alta Eficacia), dependiendo de las respuestas brindadas en la encuesta. Se identificó que aquellos trabajadores no médicos veterinarios tienen menores odds de pertenecer al grupo Alto Riesgo/Alta Eficacia, así como que el 60% de los encuestados manifestaron no tener ninguna barrera para asistir a trabajar durante la pandemia. Nuestros resultados indican que si bien los médicos veterinarios tienen un riesgo percibido que tiende a ser alto en comparación a otros trabajadores del rubro de clínica de animales de compañía, también tiene un porcentaje de respuesta alto. Esto puede deberse a que los veterinarios en comparación a otros trabajadores no médicos han recibido entrenamiento en bioseguridad y han estado en contacto con enfermedades zoonóticas desde su formación, pudiendo hacerlos sentir más seguros y eficientes frente a un escenario real.

Risk perception theory is a tool that allows to predict a group of people's behavior in a specific scenery, which is important because it helps us to know what percentage of the analyzed group can progress in that scenery and the points we must reforce in cases that they don´t. Nevertheless, in Latin America it is not frequent to find studies that evaluate risk perception and there is none in the veterinary field. In this investigation we will evaluate the risk perception and the willingness of veterinarians and animal companion workers to respond at COVID-19 pandemic in Perú, also we will explore barriers and facilities that they found to go to their works during the pandemic. Data about this project was collected through an online survey that focused on companion animal workers. A descriptive statistical analysis was made with the independent variables, while the risk and efficacy perception where evaluated with the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), which consist in the creation of 4 profiles (Low Risk/Low Efficacy, Low Risk/High Efficacy, High Risk/Low Efficacy and High Risk/High Efficacy), depending on the answers given on the survey. We identified that the workers who don't develop veterinarian medical services have significantly lower odds to belong to the High Risk/High Efficacy group. In the same way, the majority of surveyed said that they didn't have any barrier to assist at their work center during the pandemic. Our results show that even though Veterinarians have a risk perception that tends to be high compared to other workers of the animal companion’s clinic, they also have a high response percentage. This may be because veterinarians, compared to other non-medical workers, have received biosafety training and have been in contact with zoonotic diseases since their training, which can make them feel safer and more efficient in a real scenario.
