Body weight, heart weight, and heart-to-body weight ratio in Greyhounds
1995
Schoning, P. | Erickson, H. | Milliken, G.A.
Heart and body weights were obtained from 230 Greyhounds during necropsy. Sex and age were recorded for each Greyhound. Twenty-nine racing and 21 nonracing Greyhounds among the 230 dogs were compared. Heart-to-body weight ratio was calculated. Statistical analysis was done to determine the effects of age, sex, and racing on heart and body weights and heart-to-body weight ratio. In adult Greyhounds, mean +/- SD body weight was 28.4 +/- 3.1 and 31.5 +/- 2.8 kg, heart weight was 355.6 +/- 52.8 and 381.4 + /-50.8 g, and heart-to-body weight ratio was 1.3 +/- 0.2 and 1.2 +/- 0.2% for females and males, respectively. Heart and body weights were significantly different between sex and age groups and among nonracing and racing males. However, heart-to-body weight ratio was not significantly different among age, sex, or racing groups.

1995
Bagley, R.S. | Wheeler, S.J. | Gay, J.M.
Muscle potentials evoked by stimulation of the sciatic nerve were evaluated in 4- and 15-week-old chickens. Each bird was anesthetized and slowly cooled externally from a normal body temperature of 40 C to 28 C, and motor nerve conduction velocities were measured at various intervals during cooling. Motor nerve conduction velocity decreased linearly with decreasing limb temperature in both groups. The rate of change in motor nerve conduction velocity per degree in 2 groups (2.13 m/s/C vs 1.84 m/s/C) fell just short of a statistically significant difference (P = 0.0508), indicating that an age-related effect on temperature-associated variation in motor nerve conduction velocity may be present.

1995
Weigel, R.M. | Lehman, J.R. | Herr, L. | Hahn, E.C.
A field trial was conducted on a commercial swine farm quarantined because of infection with pseudorabies virus. The purpose was to investigate, in growing pigs born to hyperimmunized sows, the immunogenicity of a vaccine with a glycoprotein I (gE) deletion. One hundred twenty pigs were assigned at random to 1 of 3 vaccination schedules at ages: 8 and 12 weeks; 8, 12, and 14 weeks; and 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Immune response was measured at 8, 12, 14, 16, and 18 weeks, using the serum neutralization test, a screening ELISA, and assays of IgG and IgA in serum and nasal secretions. Results of the serum neutralization test and the screening ELISA indicated that, for pigs vaccinated only at 8 and 12 weeks, the percentage of pigs with pseudorabies virus serum antibodies decreased substantially by 18 weeks; for pigs given a booster at 14 or 16 weeks, the prevalence of serum antibodies at 18 weeks was higher, with 16-week booster vaccination eliciting the best response. At each age, nasal IgA and IgG values were highly correlated (r greater than or equal to 0.70), as were serum IgA and IgG values; correlations of serum with nasal IgA and IgG values were somewhat lower (approx range, r = 0.40 to 0.70). Nevertheless, an increase in serum IgA or IgG values on vaccination was no guarantee of an increase in nasal IgA or IgG values. For serum and nasal mucosal antibodies, a poor immune response was associated with high quantities of maternally derived antibodies. Vaccination at 16 weeks was necessary to ensure eliciting of an immune response in almost all pigs.

1995
Watson, G.L. | Slocombe, R.F. | Robinson, N.E. | Sleight, S.D.
We defined methods for use of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence (LDCL) and superoxide anion (O2-) production as parameters of the oxidative metabolism of neutrophils isolated from 1.5- to 5-week-old neonatal calves. We determined how variations in blood sample handling, agonist preparation, individual variability, and age of calves influenced the LDCL and O2- responses to certain agonists, and defined concentrations of soluble and particulate agonists that maximally stimulated the oxidative metabolism of bovine neutrophils. Oxidative responses, particularly LDCL, were characterized by marked dayto-day variability, differed greatly within and between calves, were partially age-dependent, and were partially dependent on the individual agonist. Superoxide anion production had substantially less variability. We compared the in vitro oxidative (LDCL and O2-) responses of neutrophils isolated from neonatal calves stimulated by defined concentrations of the agonists-latex, phorbol myristate acetate, calcium ionophore, and opsonized zymosan-with responses to formylated oligopeptides and zymosan-activated serum, and to live, dead, live opsonized, and dead opsonized Pasteurella haemolytica organisms. Opsonization of particulates, pathogenic or nonpathogenic, enhanced the LDCL and O2- responses of stimulated neutrophils although P haemolytica was a less potent stimulant of oxidative functions than were nonbiological agonists. We conclude that the generation of reactive oxygen species by bovine neutrophils in response to P haemolytica is highly dependent on the presence of opsonins and is greatly enhanced in live vs killed bacteria. Futhermore, the in vitro generation of reactive oxygen species, including O2- by stimulated neutrophils, may be of biologic importance if similar events occur in vivo, and could have a major role in the pathogenesis of the acute lung injury associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis.

1995
Ocular biometry, using A-scan ultrasonography and ultrasonographic pachymetry, was performed in 52 Samoyeds, 2 months to 13 years old, without intraocular or systemic diseases. Furthermore, the relative depth of the opening of the ciliary cleft was estimated from goniophotographs. The values were analyzed, and statistical models of changes in ocular distances with increasing age were identified. It was found that the changes in corneal thickness, axial anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, relative lens position, length of the vitreous body, and axial length could best be described by 1 of the 2 nonlinear models (...). The course began with a period of rapid increase, after which the ocular distance either increased at a progressively slower rate toward infinity (corneal and lens thickness) or to a finite limit (relative lens position and axial length), or ceased to grow and finally started to decrease toward minus infinity (axial anterior chamber depth and length of the vitreous body). However, suitable model for determining relative depth of the opening of the ciliary cleft could not be established. Results indicated that age-related changes, mainly in lens thickness, cause a shallow anterior chamber, and it was suggested that this may be of importance for development of a relative pupillary block and, thus, primary angle-closure glaucoma, at least in preconditioned eyes of Samoyeds.

1995
Rua-Domenech, R de la | Mohammed, H.O. | Atwill, E.R. | Cummings, J.F. | Divers, T.J. | Summers, B.A. | DeLahunta, A. | Jackson, C.
Objective: To examine the regional variations in the distribution of equine motor neuron disease (EMND) in the United States and the factors that might explain those variations. Design: Cluster investigation and case-control study. Sample population: The study population consisted of 97 horses with histopathologically confirmed EMND and 698 controls with diagnosis of other spinal cord disorders at 21 US veterinary teaching hospitals participating in the Veterinary Medical Data Base. Procedure: The total horse population of the United States was divided into 21 regions, and the regional incidence rates of EMND from January 1985 through January 1995 were estimated. Moran's index of spatial autocorrelation was calculated to test for spatial clustering of the disease. The 21 regions were then joined in broader areas according to the similarity of their EMND rates by means of the cluster analysis statistical technique. Finally, the role of potential confounding factors (age at diagnosis, month of diagnosis, breed, and sex) in the present distribution of EMND was assessed, using logistic regression analysis. Results: Differences in estimated rates across the 21 regions resulted in a strong pattern of spatial clustering of EMND in the United States. The geographic units were grouped into 5 risk regions, with the gradient of EMND incidence rates increasing from the western states (almost 0 cases/1,000,000 horse-years) toward New England (20.78 cases/1,000,000 horse-years). Reported risk factors of EMND (age, breed) and other extraneous factors (sex, month of diagnosis) could not explain the observed geographic variations of disease rates. Nevertheless, there is evidence of some confounding attributable to age and breed. Conclusions: Although the mechanism responsible for the clustering of EMND in northeastern states is still unexplained, it is not an epiphenomenon caused by regional differences in the distribution of the factors investigated.

1994
Beighle, D.E. | Boyazoglu, P.A. | Hemken, R.W. | Serumaga-Zake, P.A.
Mean phosphorus (P) content in bovine rib bone was 102.9, 108.3, and 182.7 mg/g of bone on fresh, dry, and ash weight bases, respectively. Values for calcium (Ca) were 194.3, 203.7, and 344.6 mg/g, respectively, and for magnesium (Mg) were 5.3, 5.5, and 9.4 mg/g, respectively. Mean percentage of ash in rib bone was 59.12%. Expected concentrations of Ca, P, and Mg were determined on fresh, dry, and ash weight bases and for 3 age groups, 3 breeds, and bulls, females, and steers. On an ash weight basis, cattle 6 to 18 months old had 185.74 mg of P/g, 372.52 mg of Ca/g, and 12.37 mg of Mg/g. Those 19 to 36 months old had 182.02 mg of P/g, 322.35 mg of P/g, and 8.09 mg of Mg/g. Those > 36 months old had 174.80 mg of P/g, 340.36 mg of Ca/g, and 6.62 mg of Mg/g. Steers had 183.93 mg of P/g, 352.73 mg of Ca/g, and 10.15 mg of Mg/g. Females had 178.47 mg of P/g, 320.28 mg of Ca/g, and 6.5 mg of Mg/g. Males had 176.15 mg of P/g, aH on an ash weight basis. Dairy breeds were found to have 186.08 mg of P/g, 351.25 mg of Ca/g, and 10.47 mg of Mg/g. Cattle of mixed breeding had 177.42 mg of P/g, 341.28 mg of Ca/g, and 6.54 mg of Mg/g. The Africander breed of beef cattle had 167.07 mg of P/g, all on an ash weight basis.

1994
Conzemius, M.G. | Smith, G.K. | Brighton, C.T. | Marion, M.J. | Gregor, T.P.
Biplanar radiography was used to study normal growth of the left and right radius in 5 Beagles and growth of the left radius alone in 15 additional Beagles. We explored the applicability of this radiographic method in veterinary medicine by measuring the contribution to total radius length from each growth plate. Spherical tantalum markers (0.5 mm) were embedded in the proximal epiphysis, diaphysis, and distal epiphysis of each dog's radius at 10 weeks of age. Simultaneous biplanar radiographic views were obtained every 4 weeks until skeletal maturity was documented. A three-dimensional coordinate system was constructed allowing for measurement of growth (in millimeters). Resolution of the measuring system was 0.074 mm. Mean +/- SEM length of the skeletally mature Beagle's radius, as measured from proximal epiphyseal bead to distal epiphyseal bead, was 95.33 +/- 1.07 mm. The percentage of contribution to the total radius length from the proximal and distal growth plates was 36.76 and 64.73%, respectively, with 95% confidence interval of 2.29%. The percentage of contribution to radius length from the distal radial growth plate increased for each consecutive time segment, with the distal radial physis contributing 61.75% from 10 to 14 weeks of age and increasing to 70.22% from 22 to 26 weeks of age. Significant growth was not observed after 26 weeks of age. The period of most rapid growth was between 10 and 14 weeks of age. Biplanar radiography was accurate and precise in quantifying the relative contribution of the proximal and distal growth plate to radius length in Beagles. The method is applicable in veterinary research or clinical medicine for monitoring of axial and angular growth: physiologic, iatrogenic, or pathologic.

1994
Simoens, P. | Poels, P. | Lauwers, H.
The size and shape of the foramen magnum were studied in skulls from 75 adult and 5 juvenile Pekingese dogs. After maceration of the skulls, the height, width, and area of each foramen magnum were measured, and various skull indices were determined. The shape of the foramen varied from ovoid to rectangular and had a dorsal notch in aU but 2 skulls. Prolapse of cerebellum or brain stem through the enlarged opening was prevented by a fibrous membrane covering he dorsal notch. Mean +/- SD area of the foramen was 138.1 +/- 26.1 mm(2); its mean total height was 15.0 +/- 2.9 mm, and its mean maximal width was 13.3 +/- 1.1 mm. Statistically, variability in the area of the foramen was mainly correlated with total height of the foramen, including the dorsal notch. Total height of the foramen was not correlated with age or gender. The degree of dysplasia, notch index, and occipital index of each foramen magnum were determined. To allow a more accurate evaluation of the morphology of the foramen, the foramen magnum index, defined as the ratio between the maximal width and the total height of the foramen, was also computed. Mean +/- SD foramen magnum index was 91.8 +/- 17.1 in the adult Pekingese dogs. Foramen magnum index was not significantly correlated with age, but was significantly larger in male than in female dogs. The large variability in the shape and size of the foramen magnum and the absence of any neurologic problems in dogs of this study indicate that the dorsal notch of the foramen magnum in brachycephalic dogs is a normal morphologic variation, rather than a pathologic condition.

1994
Bernoco, M.M. | Liu, I.K.M. | Willits, N.H.
Six foals were deprived of colostrum for the first 36 hours after birth and, instead, received reconstituted powdered milk. Five control foals suckled their dams naturally. Blood samples were obtained from all the foals after birth and at approximately weekly intervals until at least 5.5 months of age. Sera were analyzed for hemolytic complement activity, complement component C3, and correlating IgG concentration. Hemolytic complement (P = 0.0145) and C3 (P = 0.0002) values were significantly higher in colostrum-deprived foals (CDF) than in naturally nursed foals at 2 to 5 days of age. In addition, significantly (P = 0.0149) higher IgG concentration was found in CDF than in naturally nursed foals between 3 and 5.5 months of age. It was concluded that the observed high complement activity in CDF within 2 to 5 days of age may provide an alternative in immune defense for IgG-deprived foals after failure of colostral transfer.
