Studies on Sudan Desert sheep: 1. Effect of feeding to lambs of poor quality dry desert grass (humra) and subsequent refeeding on a high plane of nutrition on live weight growth, carcass yield and offals
1982
Gaili, E.S.E. | Mahgoub, O.
Forty–two weaned Sudan Desert lambs of both sexes were divided into three equal sex and age groups and were randomly assigned to one of three diets: Humra + limited amount of cottonseed cake and a complete ration (dura 44 % cottonseed cake 25% dry humra 29% salt 1.5% and vitamin minerals 0.5%). All diets were fed adlibitum for eleven weeks. Then differential feeding was stopped and each group was fed ad libitum on the complete ration for twelve weeks. Two lambs from both sexes were chosen at random for each nutritional treatment, and were slaughtered before the beginning of the trial. Half of the remaining lambs in each treatment was slaughtered at the end of the differential feeding period and the other half at the end of the trial. Generally, the live weight gain of lambs fed on Humra, with or without cottonseed cake, was poor whereas lambs fed on the complete ration made significantly (p

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of Rocky Mountain elk in North America. Recent studies suggest that tissue and blood mineral levels may be valuable in assessing TSE infection in sheep and cattle. The objectives of this study were to examine baseline levels of copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and molybdenum in the brains of Rocky Mountain elk with differing prion genotypes and to assess the association of mineral levels with CWD infection. Elk with leucine at prion position 132 had significantly lower magnesium levels than elk with 2 copies of methionine. Chronic wasting disease-positive elk had significantly lower magnesium than control elk. The incorporation of manganese levels in addition to magnesium significantly refined explanatory ability, even though manganese alone was not significantly associated with CWD. This study demonstrated that mineral analysis may provide an additional disease correlate for assessing CWD risk, particularly in conjunction with genotype.

Premaalatha B. | Kartiyayini S. | Selvi V. | Sohayati A. R.
In the Malaysian environment horses are primarily used in sports activities such as racing, endurance, dressage and show jumping as well as in recreational pursuits and police work. Recently, the Perak Turf Club witnessed the death of a four-yearold thoroughbred mare which was given enrofloxacin injection as treatment and was regularly dewormed and vaccinated againstequine influenza, Japanese encephalitis and tetanus. Post-mortem examination of intestinal contents revealed presence of worms. The sample was then sent to the Veterinary Research Institute (VRI), Perak for morphological identification of the worm. The worm was identified as Parascaris equorum. Thus, awareness ongastrointestinal parasites should be raised especially by recommending improved management practices such as proper manure disposal and deworming procedures to control parasite infestations as well as good management and nutrition.

Two of 3 groups of Holstein-Friesian steers (groups II and III; n = 5 each) were fed a ration containing corn naturally contaminated with 800 ng of aflatoxin/g. The other group of steers (group I; n = 5) was fed a ration containing noncontaminated corn. The respective rations were fed for 17.5 weeks, except the ration given to group III; the latter's first diet (contaminated with aflatoxin) was changed to a noncontaminated diet after 15 weeks, continuing for the remaining 2.5 weeks. All steers were killed and tissues and fluids were obtained for aflatoxin analysis. Although aflatoxin B1 and M1 could be detected in blood and urine at several sampling times during the experimental period in groups II and III steers (given the diets containing aflatoxin), there appeared to be no effects on body weight gains and immune phenomena, such as lymphoblastogenesis and antibody production, but there was a waning of the delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity in steers given aflatoxin-contaminated diets. In group III animals (diet was changed to noncontaminated ration at 15 weeks), aflatoxin B1 and M1 disappeared from urine before they were slaughtered. All tissues and fluids, except the rumen contents from these group III steers, were void of detectable aflatoxins B1 and M1 at necropsy. The concentrations of aflatoxin B1 in the rumen content of the latter steers were low. All tissues collected at necropsy from the group II steers fed the aflatoxin diet throughout the 17.5 weeks had detectable aflatoxins B1 or M1 present.

Anthelmintic resistance which is escalating in Malaysia and other
countries is forcing farmers worldwide to look at alternative, green technologies to improve productivity and reduce diseases caused by helminths in livestock. One such method is the use of effective microbes or Useful Microbes (UM) for worm control. Therefore, a preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the anthelmintic effect of UM on nematode parasites of goat in a government farm. Fifteen Boer goats were randomly selected and fed with UM Bokashi mix (effective microbes in the form of granules) with commercial goat
pellets and UM fluid in drinking water. UM used in this study was produced by Department of Veterinary Services Penang by fermenting UM stock culture with a fruit base and molasses. Faecal egg counts
(FEC) using the modified McMaster technique was carried out weekly for 5 weeks. The results show that the UM used for animal feeding (5% Bokashi with commercial goat pellet) and ad lib UM fluid in drinking water, fed over a period of 1 month showed Faecal Egg Count
reduction from 3240 e.p.g. to 677 e.p.g. (79% reduction). The general packed cell volume also increased in a majority of the animals indicating better general health. Further studies are necessary to establish the systematic use of UM in smallholder farms as well as large commercial establishments and to determine its mode
of action in the pathophysiological aspects in the face of common limitations such as poor nutrition and other stress factors.

A technology of application autolysis of fodder yeasts (AFY) for the production of products with higher protein content, digestible aminoacids and other nutritive and biologically active substances in comparison with the standard fodder yeasts (provit) was tested in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus by an example of three groups of swine. Animals of the first (control) group were fed with combined feed SK-26 with addition of 2% of provit. Animals of the second group were fed with combined feed SR-26with addition of 2% of AFY, the third group - with addition 4% of AFY. Provit and AFY were included into combined feed instead of excluded protein components in equivalent number. Research results showed that autolysis of fodder yeasts did not render negative influence on productivity of fattening stores. Average daily weight gain of stores was 637-674 g. Calculation of economic efficiency of combined feeding application of 2 and 4% of AFY showed that application of 2% AFY was more economically profitable

Development of new compositions of premixes for cows with milk yield of 4-5 thousands kg per lactation depending on lactation stage and pregnancy was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. Efficiency of application of premixes in comparison with the standard ones was estimated. Experiment was realized by an example of 3 groups of cows of white-and-black breed; experimental period included beginning milking period (90 days) and the main lactation period (142 days). Cows of the first control group were given premix P60-6M with combined feed. Animals of the second group were fed with premixes created on the basis of carotene and microelements content. Cows of the third group were given premixes in accordance with recommended standards. The refined standards of cow vitamin and trace elements consumption were presented. Formulas of premixes for high-producing cows were presented. The research results showed that the developed formulas corresponded to the physiological needs and their application influenced on metabolism and milk producing ability. Application of experimental premixes made it possible to increase the digestibility of nutritive substancesoin 2,3-7,5%. Application of vitamins and trace elements in heightened doses (on 10-30%) caused the increasing of their uptake and increasing of cuprum, zinc, manganese and cobalt content in blood on 11,6-40,8%
