The relationship between histologic lesions in endometrial biopsy specimens and susceptibility to chronic uterine infection (CUI) in mares was investigated. Mares were allotted to 4 groups on the basis of degree of endometrial lesions. Mares in group 1 (n = 6) had no pathologic changes, mares in group 2 (n = 5) had only mild pathologic changes, group-3 mares (n = 7) had moderate changes, and group-4 mares (n = 7) had severe inflammatory and fibrotic endometrial changes. Susceptibility to CUI was determined by the inflammatory response to intrauterine inoculation of 5 X 10(6) Streptococcus zooepidemicus. The inoculum was given on the third day of behavioral estrus and in the presence of a follicle > 30 mm. Mares with > 1 neutrophil/5 high-magnification (400 X) microscopic fields and > 20 colonies of S zooepidemicus at 96 hours after inoculation were considered to be susceptible to CUI. There was a significant association between biopsy grade and susceptibility to CUI among the groups. Histologically normal endometrium was associated with resistance to CUI, and severe histopathologic changes in the endometrium were associated with susceptibility to CUI. Mild to moderate endometrial lesions did not correlate consistently with susceptibility or resistance to CUI.

A 7-year-old, castrated male Yorkshire terrier dog with chronic vomiting, and melena lasted for 3 weeks was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. The complete blood counts and serum biochemistry revealed no remarkable findings. Gastrointestinal series revealed irregular margin in small intestinal lumen. After upper gastrointestinal series, erythema of the small intestinal lesions was found by exploratory laparotomy and full-thickness biopsy was performed. Histopathologic examination revealed infiltration of predominantly eosinophils and other inflammatory cells in small intestine. Based on these findings, the dog was diagnosed as eosinophilic enteritis. After 4 weeks medical treatment and hypoallergenic diet, the patient showed no vomiting, melena and other complications.

The effect of isoprothiolane(di-isopropyl-1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidenemalonate) aganist fat necrosis in Hanwoo(Korean Cattle) sire was evaluated. The 10 heads of Hanwoo sire suffering from fat necrosis were given 50mg/kg body weight of isoprothiolane(0.2g/kg of Fujix, Japan) orally once a day for 8weeks. In 30% of these, the size of thenecrotic fat masses had decreased significantly 7 months after the adminstration. Isoprothiolane did not affect on live body weight and semen characteristics. However the sire affected with fat necrosis had higher MCHC(Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) than normal sire inhematologic values 10 weeks after administration. Number of RBC(red blood cell) and PCV(packed cell volume) 10 weeks after administration had been increased than those before administration(p0.05). The serum concentrations of creatinine, triglyceride, and total cholesterol 10 weeks after administration were higher than those before administration while the concentration of glucose was vice versa. the isoprothiolane may reduce the oxidation of glucose, increase the glucose transfer to lipids, and increase blood supply to necrotic masses. These results indicate that isoprothiolane may be useful as the therapeutic agent against fat necrosis.

With the aim to elucidate the evolution of endometrial condition after Caslick’s and Pouret’s procedures they were performed in two groups formed by 7 mares with history of subfertility and mares with pneumovagina problems that could justify by their vulvar conformation that kind of surgeries. The evaluation of endometrial condition was performed by biopsy, done just before surgery and 15 and 60 days after the postoperative period and by fertility rates evaluation in both groups. The comparison of the results of post-operative exams to the pre-operative period demonstrated histopathological modifications quite subtle not to provide changes in the endometrial classifications in both groups. Despite of it, the fertility rates observed during the experimental period allowed us to conclude that Caslick’s and Pouret’s corrective procedures provided improvement of the reproductive performance in mares with pneumovagina | Com o objetivo de avaliar a evolução da condição endometrial após as cirurgias de Caslick e Pouret, empregou-se cada uma destas técnicas em um grupo de sete éguas, com histórico de subfertilidade e portadoras de pneumovagina, que justificassem, por sua conformação vulvar, a aplicação destas cirurgias. A avaliação da condição endometrial foi feita através dos exames de biópsia do endométrio, realizados imediatamente antes da cirurgia e aos 15 e 60 dias de pós-operatório e ainda pela verificação das taxas de fertilidade em ambos os grupos, durante a estação reprodutiva do ano subseqüente. A comparação dos resultados dos exames do período pós em relação ao pré-operatório evidenciou modificações histopatológicas suficientemente sutis para não levar a mudanças na classificação endometrial durante o período de observação, porém a melhora obtida nas taxas de fertilidade nos grupos experimentais permitiram concluir que as cirurgias corretivas de Caslick e Pouret proporcionaram melhora do desempenho reprodutivo de éguas portadoras de pneumovagina.
