Histomoniasis and incidental finding of Schistosoma mansoni in turkey birds

This report describes the parasitological and pathological information retrieved from the samples submitted to Regional Veterinary Laboratory, Bukit Tengah, Penang (MVKBT) followingan episode of histomoniasis in a small scale poultry farm. Liver and ceca from two dead turkey birds, water (n=5) and freshwater snails (Pomacea sp, n=7) were stored between 4°C to 10°C until analyzed. Soil samples (n=7) were preserved in 5% formalin and kept at room temperature prior to further testing. The soil samples were filtered through laboratory test sieves before the filtrates at each level were examined using direct microscopy. Portions of the liver were processed using routine paraffin technique for histopathological examination and found positive for Histomoniasis. Results from direct microscopy of the liver samples revealed Schistosoma mansoni ova, Sarcocystis sporocysts and Fasciola sp. Heterakis sp ova were detected from cecal content. Four out of seven soil samples were positive for Sarcocystis sporocysts, Coccidia oocyst, Strongyles ova and nematod larva. Water and freshwater snail samples were negative for cercaria of Schistosoma mansoni. This case was concluded as Histomoniasis, Sarcocystosis and helminthiasis with incidental finding of Schistosoma mansoni.

A case of a cestode parasite (Choanotaenia infundibulum) egg wasfound in the intestine of chicken which was sent to the Veterinary Research Institute, Ipoh in February 2014 for post-mortem. Other parasites found in the intestine were adult tapeworm and oocyst ofcoccidia. The examination of the chicken intestine for helminth ova was undertaken using direct examination of a simple wet smear of the intestinal content which was observed under compound microscope.The cestode parasite was identified based on helminthological keys by Soulsby, 1982.

Fecal samples from beef and dairy calves less than 12-month-old of Chonnam area were examined for coccidial oocysts. The percentages of cattle and coccidian species found were: Eimeria alabamensis, 9.4; E. auburnensis, 12.5; E. bovis, 29.9; E. brasiliensis, 1.5; E. bukidnonensis, 2.1; E. canadensis, 10.4; E. cylindrica, 7.5; E. ellipsoidalis, 11.5; E. pellita, 1.7; E. subspherica, 10.4; E. wyomingensis, 2.9; and E. zuernii, 22.5. Fifty five percent of the fecal samples from 521 calves were positive for oocysts, and clinical coccidiosis was not found in any of these calves. The number of species in positive samples ranged from 1 to 7

Cryptosporidiosis in chickens

Light-microscope studies of the coccidial organisms found in the Bursa fabricii from chickens showing some specific signs were carried out, and the etiological agent was estimated as the parasite belonging to the Family Cryptosporiidae. The specific gross pathological signs were intestinal hemorrhage and atrophy of the Bursa fabricii and hyperplasia was associated with the presence of organisms attached to the epithelial cells lining the plicae of the bursa of Fabricius in the microscopical findings

In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was developed a concept for differentiation of eimeria and helminthes using a system of identification indexes as mathematical expressions of morphometric correlations of eimeria oocystae and helminth eggs morphology. There was developed a method for identification eimeria species on the basis of two-dimensional mathematical analysis of oocysts using a new identification index which represented a duplication proportion of contour perimeter to surface area of an oocyst.

Morphological and biological characteristic of isospora and eimeria was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus on the basis of carried out measurements and experimental infection minks (Mustela). Research results showed, that in Belarus at mink breeding farm holdings there were determined four species of eimeria and isospores, one of which I. eversmanni - is registered by researchers from the Vitebsk State Academy of Agriculture in the Republic for the first time. The most widespread species is Е. vison (57,03%) was found out in all analyzed 24 fur breeding farms. Species composition of eimeria and isospores did not depend on a sex and typical coat pattern of minks, as well as on a geographical location area of an analyzed farm. Some distinctions in species composition of the intestinal protozoa were observed at minks of different age. Of all analyzed species the most pathogenic proved to be Е. vison and I. laidlawi which in case of infectioning caused animal mortality. | Дана морфологическая и биологическая характеристика изоспор и эймерий на основании проведенной микрометрии и экспериментального заражения норок. Таким образом, по результатам проведенных нами исследований следует отметить, что в Республике Беларусь у норок, разводимых в хозяйствах, установлено четыре вида эймерий и изоспор, один из которых - I. eversmanni - зарегистрирован нами в республике впервые. Самым распространенным видом является Е. vison (57,03%), обнаруженный во всех обследованных нами 24-х зверохозяйствах. Видовой состав эймерий и изоспор не зависит от пола и типовой окраски норок, а также от географического месторасположения хозяйства. Некоторые различия в видовом составе кишечных простейших наблюдались у норок разного возраста. Из отмеченных видов наиболее патогенными являются Е. vison и I. laidlawi, вызывающие при заражении падеж зверей.
