Soroori, Sarang | Rostami, Amir | Zangisheh, Mahsa | Shamohamadi, Pooria
Cardiac thrombosis normally occurs in old Syrian hamsters and according to the research it has a higher incidence rate in females than males. The most frequent site of thrombus formation has been reported to be the left atrium and it usually occurs secondary to degenerative cardiomyopathy and amyloidosis. In this study during a period of 2 years, 22 pet Syrian hamsters aged between 1-3 years-old with signs of cardiovascular disease and referred to the small animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital of University of Tehran were examined in order to evaluate for cardiac diseases as well as atrial thrombosis. During the examinations and observations clinical signs such as lethargy, anorexia, hyperpnoea, reduced daily activity, tachycardia, cyanosis, and vaginal discharge were observed. Based on the clinical sings, the initial diagnosis of cardiac disease was made and for more accurate evaluation of cardiac disease, the cases were referred to the radiology department. For detection of specific signs of cardiac disease echocardiography was performed on all patients. in some cases, sampling of vaginal discharge was taken as well and transferred to the lab for bacterial culture. Cardiac thrombosis and especially atrial thrombosis in all cases were diagnosed by echocardiography so that 9 cases showed pyometra concurrently.

Epidemiologic relations were evaluated between plasma concentrations of nutrients and cardiovascular diseases. A total of 220 cats were assessed: 144 cats with noninduced acquired heart disease and 76 clinically normal cats. Plasma was assayed for taurine, alpha-tocopherol, selenium, retinol, and total cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations. Cardiovascular disease groups included dilated cardiomyopathy (n = 53), left ventricular hypertrophy (n = 28), hyperthyroidism (n = 11), and uncertain classification (n = 52). In cats with dilated cardiomyopathy, mean plasma taurine concentration was the lowest of that in cats of any group, being only 38% of the value in healthy cats; females had less than half the mean value of males. Tocopherol concentration was 20% lower than normal, and retinol concentration was 40% higher than normal. Total cholesterol concentration was 36% lower than normal. Triglycerides concentration was higher in these cats than in any other group-twice the value recorded in healthy cats and 67% higher than that in hyperthyroid cats. In cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, almost 15% had mean plasma taurine concentration < 30 micromol/L. Retinol concentration was 15% higher, and triglycerides concentration was 54% higher than normal. Approximately 27% of hyperthyroid cats had mildly decreased plasma taurine concentration. Hyperthyroid cats had the lowest tocopherol and cholesterol values; both were at least 30% lower than normal. Retinol concentration was 30% higher than Approximately 14% of cats with uncertain classification had mildly decreased plasma taurine concentration. Plasma retinol and triglycerides concentrations were higher than normal in 25 and 38% of these cats, respectively. Plasma selenium concentration, compared between healthy cats and cats with cardiac disease, was not significantly different. This observation may not be meaningful, however, in light of the limited number of cats in which selenium was assessed.

2014
Perego, Manuela | Skert, Stefano | Santilli, Roberto A.
Objective-To characterize the electrocardiographic features of the atrial repolarization (Ta) wave in dogs with third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block. Sample-ECGs of 36 dogs with third-degree AV block and no identifiable structural heart diseases. Procedures-Standard 12-lead ECGs were acquired with a digital system, and measurements were manually edited. Results-A Ta wave was detectable in all dogs for at least 1 ECG lead. The Ta wave had negative polarity in leads I, II, III, and aVF and positive polarity in leads aVL and aVR, with a mean electrical axis of -114.26°. Mean duration and mean amplitude of the Ta wave in lead II were 140.2 milliseconds and -0.09 mV, respectively, with the ratio for the Ta-to-P wave duration of 2.3 and the ratio of Ta-to-P wave amplitude of -0.35. Significant correlations were found between the Ta wave duration and duration of the P-Ta interval, Ta wave amplitude and the ECG lead, Ta wave duration and body weight, and duration of the P-Ta interval and atrial rate. Measurements of the Ta wave were repeatable. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Measurements of the Ta wave in dogs with third-degree AV block were repeatable. The values for the Ta wave reported here can be used as reference values for dogs with AV conduction disturbances and an echocardiographically normal atrial size. Further studies are needed to validate these results in dogs with structural heart diseases.

Although it has been reported that hormones or chemicals, which increse in intracellular cAMP, produced Mg2+ release from the heart, it is not well characterized whether a specific Mg2+ exchanger is involved in cAMP-induced Mg2+ efflux in themammalian hearts In this work, we studied the relationship between the increase in intracellular cAMP and ion transport system on Mg2+ regulation in the perfused rat heart and isolated myocytes. The Mg2+ content in the perfusate and supernatant were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The addition of membrane permeable cAMP analogue to the perfused hearts and myocytes. cAMP-induced Mg2+ efflux was ingibited by H7, benzamil or imipramine in the perfused hearts and myocytes, but not by EIPA. We confirmed that a significant Mg2+ efflux was induced by an increase in intracellular cAMP in the hearts and myocytes. The cAMP-induced increase of Mg2+ efflux in the hearts may be involved in ion transport system(Na+-Ca2+ and Na+-Mg2+ exchanger)

1995
Allworth, M.S. | Church, D.B. | Maddison, J.E. | Einstein, R. | Brennan, P. | Hussein, N.A. | Matthews, R.
A repeated-measures study was conducted on 5 dogs to clinically, radiographically, and echocardiographically characterize the actions of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril, before and after development of experimentally induced heart failure. Heart failure was artificially induced, using a surgically implanted programmable ventricular pacemaker, which stimulated the heart at a rate of 245 beats/min until a low-output cardiomyopathic a state developed. This condition was then stabilized by decreasing the pacing rate to 190 beats/min. Pacing-induced heart failure was successfully induced in a mean +/- SD 4.2 +/- 1.95 weeks. The condition closely resembled the clinical, radiographic, and echocardiographic features of naturally acquired idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. Enalapril was well tolerated by dogs, and clinical adverse reactions did not develop. Results of echocardiographic studies indicated that enalapril treatment during the control period resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) increase in velocity of circumferential fiber shortening and a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in left ventricular ejection time. Therapeutic responses to enalapril were evident after development of heart failure. These included reduced severity of clinical signs of disease, evidence of decreased radiographically determined cardiac size (2 of 5 dogs), radiographic evidence of a reduction in pulmonary edema and congestion (4 of 5 dogs), significant (P < 0.05) reductions in left atrial and ventricular chamber dimensions (left atrial dimension, diastolic left ventricular internal dimension as determined echocardiographically), and improvement in some echocardiographic indices of left ventricular performance (velocity of circumferential fiber shortening and left ventricular ejection time).

1994
Haggstrom, J. | Hansson, K. | Karlberg, B.E. | Kvart, C. | Olsson, K.
Plasma concentration of immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide (ir-ANP) was investigated in 83 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with variable severity of mitral regurgitation caused by chronic valvular disease (CVD). Severity of mitral incompetence was assessed by echocardiography. Significant differences in plasma concentrations of ir-ANP were not found between clinically normal dogs (New York Heart Association functional class O), dogs with only cardiac murmur (class I), and dogs with echocardiographic evidence of slight to moderate left atrial and ventricular dilatation (class II). Dogs with severe left atrial and ventricular dilatation and clinical signs of congestion (classes III and IV) were found to have significantly (P < 0.001) increased plasma concentration of ir-ANP. Overall, moderate degree of association was found between plasma concentration of ir-ANP and left atrial and left ventricular diameters (Pearson's r = 0.65, 0.60, respectively, P < 0.001), as well as heart rate (r = 0.47, P < 0.01). However, left atrial enlargement as found to have the predominant effect on plasma ir-ANP concentration. It is concluded that the plasma concentration of ir-ANP did not become markedly increased before decompensation of chronic mitral regurgitation associated with severe enlargement of the left atrium and ventricle in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

1990
Besbasi, F.S. | Hamlin, R.L.
A study was designed to determine whether phenytoin (PHE) prevents the myocardial necrosis and subsequent fibrosis produced by isoproterenol (ISO). Seven groups of female rats of the Wistar strain were used. Rats in groups 1 and 5 served as controls. Rats in group 3 were injected SC with 85 mg of ISO/kg of body weight for 2 consecutive days. Rats in groups 2 and 6 received 100 mg of PHE/kg orally. Rats in groups 4 and 7 received both PHE and ISO. There were 6 to 9 rats/group. Effects of ISO and PHE were evaluated gravimetrically, histologically, and electrocardiographically. Heart weight/body weight ratios for each group receiving ISO, with or without PHE, were greater than for groups not receiving ISO (P < 0.05). Light microscopic examination of heart sections of rats given ISO alone or ISO + PHE revealed multiple and diffuse areas of fibrosis. Fibrosis in hearts from rats receiving PHE + ISO was less severe than that in hearts from rats receiving ISO alone, but the difference was not statistically significant. Electrocardiographic changes of statistical significance were not observed in rats receiving any compound (alone or in combination), when compared with the control groups of equal age.

1990
Freeman, L.C. | Ack, J.A. | Fligner, M.A. | Muir, W.W. III.
Programmed electrical stimulation techniques were used to evaluate the effects of halothane and isoflurane on induction of atrial fibrillation in anesthetized dogs. Experiments were performed in 16 dogs anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Critically timed premature stimuli were applied to the right atrial appendage and Bachmann bundle to determine the atrial fibrillation threshold, defined as the minimal current required to induce rapid, irregular atrial electrical activity of at least 8 seconds' duration. Atrial fibrillation thresholds were determined at baseline (0.0% inhalational anesthetic), 0.5 minimal alveolar concentration (MAC), and 1.0 MAC of halothane (n = 8) and isoflurane (n = 8). In the absence of inhalation anesthetic, it was significantly (P < 0.01) easier to induce atrial fibrillation at the Bachmann bundle vs the right atrial appendage. Atrial fibrillation threshold at the Bachmann bundle was not affected by increasing concentrations of halothane, but was increased by 1.0 MAC of isoflurane (P < 0.05). It was concluded that at 1.0 MAC isoflurane, but not halothane, has antifibrillatory effects in atrial tissue.

OBJECTIVE To determine repeatability, reproducibility, and reference intervals of indices of right atrial longitudinal strain (RALS) derived from speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) in dogs without heart disease. ANIMALS 110 client-owned dogs and 10 laboratory Beagles. PROCEDURES To determine intraobserver within-day (repeatability) and interobserver (reproducibility) coefficients of variation, RALS during ventricular systole (ϵS), ventricular early diastole (ϵE), and atrial systole (ϵA), as derived with STE, were obtained by 2 investigators for 5 randomly selected client-owned dogs and analyzed by linear regression. Reference intervals were estimated from the results of all dogs. Correlations between RALS indices (ϵS, ϵE, and ϵA) and sex, age, body weight, heart rate, and blood pressure were determined. RESULTS RALS derived from STE showed good intraobserver within-day repeatability and interobserver reproducibility, with coefficients of variation of < 20%. Both ϵS and ϵE were significantly negatively correlated with age, but ϵA was not correlated with age. Indices were not correlated with sex, body weight, or blood pressure. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE RALS indices derived from STE were repeatable and reproducible and were affected by the age of dogs without heart disease. Age should be considered in the interpretation of RALS indices in clinical settings. Further studies are needed to apply RALS indices for assessing dogs with heart disease.

2019
Woo, Krystal M. T. | Barron, Grace H. | Daugherty, Allison L. | Woo, Jennifer M. P. | Kehoe, Spencer P. | Aguilar, Laura A. B. | Cavanaugh, Sarah M.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and report measurements of the radiographic cardiac silhouette of healthy juvenile and adult ospreys (Pandion haliaetus). ANIMALS 54 ospreys (22 adults, 19 juveniles, and 13 birds of undetermined age) without clinical signs of cardiac disease and with adequate ventrodorsal radiographic images for cardiac silhouette assessment. PROCEDURES Radiographs of ospreys were assessed to determine cardiac width at the widest point as well as sternal width and thoracic width at the same level. Two-way mixed-effects models were used to evaluate interrater reliability for mean rating. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to create predictive models of cardiac width and to establish a theoretical reference range for healthy ospreys. RESULTS Cardiac width of healthy ospreys was approximately 90% to 92% of sternal width and 67% to 69% of thoracic width. Both sternal width and thoracic width were significant predictors of cardiac width in independent predictive models as well as in a combined model after controlling for age. Thirty-four of 41 (83%) measured cardiac widths were within the theoretical reference range. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Ospreys are sentinels used in monitoring environmental health. Environmental factors may have an impact on the cardiac health of ospreys, but reference values for healthy ospreys have not been established for use in assessing cardiomegaly in this species. The radiographic ratios and predictive model obtained in this study may be useful for objective evaluation of cardiomegaly in ospreys.
