Hypothyroidism is a possible predisposing factor in a number of disorders of companion psittacine birds. We developed and validated a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) response testing protocol for cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), using 0.1 IU of TSH/bird given IM, with blood sample collection at 0 and 6 hours after TSH, and a commercial radioimmunoassay for thyroxine T4). This protocol was used to document a seasonal sex difference in stimulated T4 values-females responded with higher T4 values than those in males in summer- and a stress-induced depression of baseline T4 values was detected in a group of cockatiels with normal TSH response. An experimental model for mature-onset hypothyroidism in cockatiels was created by radiothyroidectomizing cockatiels with 3.7 MBq (100 microCi) of 131I/bird given IV. Induction of the hypothyroid state was confirmed by baseline T4 concentration, TSH response test results, thyroid pertechnetate scintigraphy, and gross and microscopic examinations. Classical signs of hypothyroidism (eg, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, poor feathering) were lacking or mild at 48 days after thyroid ablation.

1992
Gregory, S.P. | Holt, P.E. | Parkinson, T.J.
Maximal urethral closure pressure, functional profile length, and number of respiratory peaks on the resting urethral pressure profile, expressed as a percentage of those occurring on the bladder pressure recording, were compared at catheter withdrawal speeds of 1 and 3 mm/s in 30 anesthetized bitches. Significant (P < 0.001) differences were found in maximal urethral closure pressure and percentage of transmission of respiratory peaks between the 2 speeds. Significant difference was not detected in functional pro-file length.

The purpose of the study reported here, to investigate the effect of atropine on cardio-respiratory parameters and body temperature in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy with the combination of medetomidine-ketamine anesthesia. Twenty-six adult female intact domestic cats were admitted to Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for routine elective ovariohysterectomy. The animals were divided into two groups by the randomized grouping method before the operation. Trial animals (n=14) received atropine together with medetomidine and ketamine anesthesia. In control animals (n=12) received the same anesthesia without atropine injection. At the end of the operation, animals were moved to the critical care unit and the measurements of vital parameters were performed. Heart, respiration rates, deep rectal temperature and status of anesthesia recovery were recorded after the operation every 10 minutes for 1 hour. There was a group, time, and group x time interaction noted for heart rate. Treatment cats showed greater heart rate during measurement. The mean respiratory rate and deep rectal temperature were in reference ranges for cats and similar for both groups. In both groups significant sedation induced, however, the scores were not statistically significant among groups. In conclusion, atropine is an effective drug preventing decrease of heart rate and patients have shown less undesirable side effects when it is used before the administration of medetomidine in cats that operated for ovariohysterectomy.

Objective-To compare the urodynamic and morphologic effects of the administration of estriol alone and in combination with phenylpropanolamine on the lower portion of the urogenital tract in female dogs. Animals-3 sexually intact and 3 spayed female Beagles without urinary incontinence. Procedure-Dogs received estriol (2 mg, PO) once daily for 7 days followed by estriol (2 mg, PO) and phenylpropanolamine (1.5 mg/kg, PO) once daily for 7 days. Urethral pressure profilometry, diuresis cystometry, and vaginourethrography were performed before treatment (day 0) and at days 7 and 14. The maximum urethral pressure (MUP) and closure pressure (MUCP), urethral functional and anatomic profile lengths, integrated pressure (IP), plateau, distance before MUP, maximum meatus pressure, threshold pressure, threshold volume, compliance, urethral length, and vaginal length and width were measured. Results-Before treatment, no urodynamic differences were observed between the 2 groups; however, vaginal length and width were significantly shorter in spayed dogs. Compared with day 0 values, estriol treatment significantly increased MUP, MUCP, and IP values at day 7, but at day 14, this effect decreased despite phenylpropanolamine administration. No morphologic changes from baseline were detected after either treatment in any dog. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Data suggest that estriol mainly acts on the urethral sphincter mechanism by increasing urethral resistance in sexually intact and spayed female dogs without urinary incontinence. Administration of estriol and phenylpropanolamine did not increase the urethral resistance more than estriol alone. The urodynamic effects of estriol in female dogs with urinary incontinence remain to be elucidated.

1992
Olson, P.N. | Mulnix, J.A. | Nett, T.M.
Concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured in serum samples obtained from 100 dogs. Groups (n = 25/group) consisted of sexually intact and ovariohysterectomized bitches and sexually intact and castrated male dogs. Mean (+/- SD) concentrations of LH in the serum of sexually intact and ovariohysterectomized bitches were 1.2 (+/- 0.9) and 28.7 (+/- 25.8) ng/ml, respectively. Mean concentrations of FSH in the serum of sexually intact and ovariohysterectomized bitches were 98 (+/- 49) and 1,219 (+/- 763) ng/ml, respectively. Mean concentrations of LH in the serum of sexually intact and castrated male dogs were 6.0 (+/- 5.2) and 17.1 (+/- 9.9) ng/ml, respectively. Mean concentrations of FSH in the serum of sexually intact and castrated male dogs were 89 (+/- 28) and 858 (+/- 674) ng/ml, respectively. In addition to history, physical examination results, and other laboratory values, the measurement of serum gonadotropin concentrations may aid in determining whether dogs have been neutered.

This study was performed to investigate the reproductive performanceand spontaneous malformations of female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats obtained from the Animal Resource Unit, Institute for Medical Research for their use in reproductive toxicity assessment. Onehundred and thirty-five virgin female rats with a body weight ranging between 190 g and 210 g were randomly caged overnight with 60 fertile male rats in 1:1 basis. Vaginal smear was performed the next morning and the day of sperm positive was considered as estational day (GD) 0. On GD21 caesarean hysterectomy was performed to examine the outcome of each pregnancy. The female fertility index (sperm positive) was 90.5% and the pregnancy index was 100%. Thepercentage of pre and post-implantation loss were 1.96 and 7.48 respectively with the number of early resorption out numbered the late resorption (0.56 ± 1.0 and 0.36 ± 1.5 respectively). Out of1,234 foetuses examined, only 5 foetuses (0.41%) presented with gross congenital malformation. The female SD rats obtained from the Institute demonstrated high fertility and pregnancy indexes with lowincidence of resorption and malformation, therefore suitable to use for reproductive toxicity assessment.
