Incidence of Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in Youngnam swine herds and the biochemical properties of the organisms recovered from pigs with atrophic rhinitis.
1988
Jang H.K. | Kim B.H.
The present study was conducted to investigate the Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in Youngnam swine herds during the period of August 1986 to July 1987 and some properties of the organisms isolated from these Korean swine. B. bronchiseptica was recovered from 25 of 70 (35.7%) growing pigs of 4 to 10 weeks of age and from 12 of 13 (92.3%) herds. From 115 slaughter pigs, 58(50.4%) pigs were culture positive and the pigs from 13 of 14 (92.9%) herds were found to be infected with B. bronchiseptica. The majority of biochemical and cultural properties of B. bronchiseptica isolated from Korean swine were identical to those of the standard strain employed and some 97.6% of the isolates showed the characters of phase I organism on primary isolation.

1988
Barnouin , Jacques (INRA (France). UR 0346 Unité de recherche d'Écopathologie) | Paccard , P.
Nutritional risk factors for liver damage were surveyed in Black-Pied French dairy herds using serum glutamic dehydrogenase and gamma glutamyl transferase levels to monitor liver dysfunction. The 34 herds chosen were free of parasitic liver injuries. Feeding systems, nutritional blood parameters and production characteristics are analyzed. Two risk factors appeared to be involved in hepatic injury: feeding of fresh rape (Brassica napus) and high levels of serum urea (>/=6.64 mmol/L) associated with grass pasture or dietary nonprotein nitrogen with corn silage

Shappell, K.K. | Derksen, F.J. | Stick, J.A. | Robinson, N.E.
Effects of ventriculectomy and prosthetic laryngoplasty on upper airway flow mechanics and blood gas tensions in exercising horses with induced left laryngeal hemiplegia were assessed. Five adult horses were trained to stand, trot (4.5 m/s), and gallop (7.2 m/s) on a treadmill (6.38? incline). Inspiratory and expiratory airflows (VImax, VEmax, respectively) were measured using a 15.2-cm diameter pneumotachograph in a face mask. Inspiratory and expiratory transupper airway pressures (PuI, PuE respectively) were determined as pressure differences between barometric pressure and lateral tracheal pressure. Blood collected from exteriorized carotid arteries was analyzed for PaO2, PaCO2, pH, hemoglobin (Hb) content, and HCO3-values. Heart rate (HR) was determined with an HR monitor. Measurements were made with horses standing, trotting, and galloping before left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy (LRLN; base line), 14 days after LRLN, 30 days after ventriculectomy (44 days after LRLN), and 14 days after prosthetic laryngoplasty (58 days after LRLN). Before LRLN (base line), increasing treadmill speed for horses from standing to the trot and gallop progressively increased HR, respiratory frequency, VImax, VEmax, PuI, PuE, Hb, and PaCO2 values and decreased PaO2 pH, and HCO3- values; inspiratory and expiratory impedances were unchanged. After LRLN, inspiratory impedance and PuI were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in horses at the trot and gallop, and PaCO2 was significantly increased in horses at the gallop. The VImax and respiratory frequency were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in horses at the gallop. Left recurrent laryngeal neurectomy had no effect on PuE VEmax, HR, PaO2, pH, Hb or expiratory impedance values. Ventriculectomy failed to improve upper airway flow mechanics induced by LRLN, whereas prosthetic laryngoplasty restored upper airway flow mechanics to base-line values.

Inoculation of lambs with an ovine isolate of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) by a combined intranasal and intratracheal route resulted in mild respiratory tract illness, with respiratory tract lesions. Lung lesions were characterized by bronchitis and bronchiolitis, hyperplasia of bronchial and bronchiolar epithelium, peribronchiolar and perivascular accumulations of lymphocytes, alveolar and perivascular accumulations of lymphocytes, alveolar septal thickening, and collapse. Respiratory synctial virus was recovered from the respiratory tract of inoculated lambs, and RSV antigen was demonstrated by immunoperoxidase staining of bronchiolar and alveolar epithelial peroxidase staining of bronchiolar and alveolar epithelia cells in pneumonic lesions of lambs euthanatized on post-inoculation days 5 and 6. Other primary respiratory tract pathogens were not isolated. Clinical signs of respiratory tract illness or respiratory tract lesions did not develop in the in-contact control lamb. Inoculation of the ovine RSV isolate into calves and deer fawns resulted in infection in both species, and at necropsy, pneumonic lesions were present. A mild to moderate respiratory tract illness developed in the calves, but clinical disease was not seen in the fawns. Lung lesions in fawns were similar to those seen in lambs; lesions in calves were characterized by collapse, scattered areas of parenchymal necrosis, and bronchiolitis. Respiratory synctial virus was reisolated from the lower respiratory tract of inoculated calves and fawns, and immunoperoxidase positive epithelial cells were seen in pneumonic lesions Other primary respiratory pathogens were not detected. Respiratory syncytial virus infection was not demonstrable in control animals that were in contact with inoculated animals. We concluded that an ovine RSV isolate, when inoculated in a severe challenge regime, caused mild primary pneumonia in lambs and lesions similar to those described in epizootics of naturally occurring ovine respiratory tract disease. Also, the ovine RSV caused lower respiratory tract lesions in infected calves and deer.

Ihrke, P.J. | Wong, A. | Stannard, A.A. | Vivrette, S.L.
The fungal flora of the hair and underlying skin from 2 sites was examined qualitatively in 20 horses free of skin or ocular disease. Fungi were isolated from both the hair and the underlying skin of all 20 horses. Twenty-two genera regarded commonly as saprophytes were identified and an additional 2 fungi resembled the perfect state of the cutaneous pathogenic genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. Cladosporium spp, Penicillium spp, and Rhizopus spp were the most frequently isolated saprophytes. In general, similar fungi were isolated from the hair and underlying skin, and differences were not noted in isolates from the saddle and rump regions.

1988
Maggio-Price, L. | Emerson, C.L. | Hinds, T.R. | Vincenzi, F.F. | Hammond, W.R.
Three Beagles with chronic anemia and reticulocytosis were studied. The dogs originated from a large breeding colony and appeared clinically normal with the exception of splenomegaly. The PCV ranged from 30 to 39% (normal, 46 to 56%), with reticulocyte indices of 2.3 to 9.9. Red blood cells were morphologically normal, and examination of marrow aspirates revealed erythroid hyperplasia. Shortened chromium-51 RBC life-spans (7.2 to 15.4 days in anemic dogs; 22.2 to 25.2 days in control dogs) documented a hemolytic anemia. Acquired causes of hemolytic anemia were ruled out. Red blood cells had normal glycolytic enzyme activities, no evidence of unstable or abnormal hemoglobin, and had altered osmotic fragility curves. The breeding of 2 anemic dogs resulted in off-spring with anemia and reticulocytosis. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed no abnormalities in RBC membrane cytoskeletal proteins in all anemic adult dogs and in 3 offspring.

1988
Collins, J.K. | Jensen, R. | Smith, G.H. | Flack, D.E. | Kerschen, R. | Bennett, B.W. | Jones, R.L. | Alexander, A.F.
Thirty-three cattle with fatal respiratory tract disease were examined for gross and histologic lesions and for the presence of viral and bacterial agents in the lungs. Fifteen cattle had lesions characteristic of atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP), and 18 had other respiratory tract diseases, including infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, shipping fever pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, pulmonary abscess, and edema of the trachea. Gross necropsy findings in the cattle with AIP were uncollapsed and emphysematous lungs; histopathologic findings included interstitial edema, thickening of alveolar walls, hyaline membrane formation, and hyperplasia of type-II pneumonocytes. The infective agents found in the lungs of the 33 cattle included bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine herpesvirus type 1, Pasteurella sp, mycoplasmas, and Corynebacterium pyogenes. Bovine respiratory syncytial virus was detected by use of immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase on lung tissue sections; bovine herpesvirus type 1 was detected by these techniques and by isolation of the virus. Bovine respiratory syncytial virus was significantly (P = 0.01) associated with lesions of AIP (11 of 15), compared with those of other respiratory tract diseases (5 of 18).

1988
Bretzlaff, K.N. | Ott, R.S. | Koritz, G.D. | Lock, T.F. | Neff-Davis, C.A. | Gustafsson, B.K. | Davis, L.E.
Chloramphenicol was administered by constant IV infusion to 7 healthy postpartum cows at rates predicted to approach a steady-state plasma concentration of 5 micrograms/ml. After 8 hours of constant IV infusion, uterine tissues were removed surgically and were assayed for chloramphenicol concentrations. Mean plasma-to-tissue ratios of chloramphenicol concentrations were 3.05, 3.63 (6 cows only), and 3.22 for caruncles, endometrium, and uterine wall, respectively. Plasma-to-tissue ratios of the 3 tissues were not significantly different (P greater than 0.10). Intrauterine (IU) injections of chloramphenicol (20 mg/kg of body weight) were administered to 3 healthy postpartum cows. The mean value of the fraction of the drugabsorbed from the uteri of these cows was 0.04. Mean concentrations of chloramphenicol were 43.8 micrograms/g in caruncles, 34.6 micrograms/g in endometrium, 2.8 micrograms/g in uterine wall, and 2.9 micrograms/ml in plasma 8 hours after IU injections. Chloramphenicol has now been banned for use in food-producing animals in the United States because of its potential for causing toxicosis in human beings. It is illegal to use chloramphenicol in food-producing animals in the United States and in some other countries as well. This includes use by the IU route of administration because chloramphenicol and most drugs are absorbed from the uterus into the bloodstream and are distributed to milk and tissues.

1988
Valentin-Weigand, P. | Chhatwal, G.S. | Blobel, H.
Adherence of Streptococcus dysgalactiae isolates from cattle and S equi isolates from horses to their respective host epithelial cells was compared with the adherence of S pyogenes to human epithelial cells. The adherence was quantitatively determined by use of fluorescein-labeled streptococci. All 3 streptococcal species adhered selectively to their respective host cells. The mechanism of adherence was evaluated by binding studies with adhesive plasma protein, fibronectin. Although all 3 streptococcal species bound fibronectin, S dysgalactiae and S equi interacted preferentially with a 210-kilodalton (kD) C-terminal fragment of fibronectin, whereas S pyogenes bound only a 29-kD N-terminal fragment. A synthetic peptide Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser, representing the host cell attachment site of fibronectin, partially inhibited the binding of fibronectin and of its 210 kD fragment to S dysgalactiae, but not to S equi. The binding of fibronectin and its 29-kD fragment to S pyogenes was not inhibited by Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser. These differences in binding activities corresponded to the ability of fibronectin to mediate the adherence of the streptococci to the epithelial cells: fibronectin strongly inhibited the adherence of S pyogenes and S equi to the epithelial cells, but only weakly inhibited that of S dysgalactiae.

1988
Hanson, R.R. | Nixon, A.J. | Calderwood-Mays, M. | Gronwall, R. | Pendergast, J.F.
Two techniques for end-to-end anastomosis of the small colon were evaluated in each of 6 horses. A simple interrupted suture pattern that excluded the mucosa and was oversewn with an inverting suture was compared with a triangulated double-row pattern of stainless steel staples. Anastomotic sites were evaluated at 2 weeks, 2 months, and 6 months for extent of abdominal adhesions, lumen diameter at anastomotic sites, bursting pressures, and healing response. Clinical postoperative complications were not associated with either technique. At postmortem examination, there was extensive adhesion formation from the mesocolon to the stapled anastomotic site. The suture technique resulted in greater luminal diameters (P less than or equal to 0.05), with good apposition of the tissue layers. Staples were missing as early as 2 weeks after surgery, and their loss was associated with separation of the muscularis at later evaluation periods. Regardless of technique, all but one anastomotic segment burst away from the anastomotic site along the mesenteric taenial band. For the 12 anastomoses performed in normal horses, the suturing technique was better than the stapling technique because of significantly larger lumen diameters, better anastomotic healing, and minimal intra-abdominal adhesion formation.
