Purpose. Analysis of species and varietal diversity of the genus Salvia L. cultivated flora of the world, including Ukraine; prognostic assessment and determination of the directions of ornamental representatives of the genus introduction to the conditions of the Forest-steppe of Ukraine.Methods. Analysis and synthesis, comparison and generalization of information data, introduction forecast.Results. The modern assortment of the genus Salvia is presented in quantitative, taxonomic, arealogical and ecological-cenotic terms. Belonging of the species of the genus to 6 main centers of origin of cultivated plants was determined, and a significant diversity of life forms (nanophanerophytes, microphanerophytes, hamephites, hemicryptophytes, theophytes), naturally formed under the influence of factors determined by different geographical and ecological-phytocenotic conditions of plant growth was reflected. Species assortment of the genus Salvia from the collection fund of the M.?M.?Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was analyzed in comparison with the collections of other Ukrainian botanical gardens. The list of decorative species of the collection, found in the natural flora of Ukraine, was given. Three groups of species have been identified by origin, what determines the conditions for plant cultivation in the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. In terms of taxonomic structure, introduced sage species belong to eight (according to Bentham, 1833) out of twelve sections, which represent biomorphological diversity and confirm the high introduction potential of these plants.? The species and interspecific hybrids most fully used in breeding work and represented by a significant varietal diversity were distinguished, as well as the sage assortment of the collection of ornamental plants of the NBG was presented.Conclusions. It has been revealed that the species and varietal diversity of the genus Salvia of the world cultivated flora has a significant introduction potential for the Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. There discussed directions of use for the valuable groats crop, namely Rice, growth rates of its production in Ukraine, options and necessity of creation new verities by breeders, that favors not just the improved nutrition of people, but improves their health, too. And also a full description is provided for new varieties of soybean listed in the Sate Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Dissemination in Ukraine.

Purpose. To analyze lines of competitive testing of soft spring wheat in terms of ecological plasticity and stability using statistical methods of analysis and identify lines with high stability of grain yield.Methods. The studies were carried out during 2018–2020, on the basis of the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat NAAS of Ukraine. When considering the results obtained, generally accepted methods of genetic and statistical analysis were used.Results. Evaluation of breeding material in different years makes it possible to obtain information about the characteristics of the reaction of genotypes to changes in environmental conditions. As a result of the studies, it was found that the lines Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0.59), Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0.44), Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0.22) were of high plasticity. Calculations of ecological stability indicate that lines are considered stable, the variance of stability is zero or close to zero. From a practical point of view, lines with a combined manifestation of high ecological plasticity and stability are considered valuable. This was the line Erythro­spermum 15-32 (bi = 0.44; S2di = 0.01) that indicates its low reaction rate and the ability to provide a consistently high level of yield under any growing conditions. The most valuable are the genotypes that combine a low level of the coefficient of variation, high homeostaticity and bree­ding value, which include the lines Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206.42, Sc = 4.11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98.41, Sc = 3.91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78.57, Sc = 3.76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54.84, Sc = 3.75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54.60, Sc = 4.17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35.60, Sc = 3.78), Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46.66, Sc = 3.58).Conclusions. The evaluation of breeding material is of great importance when creating new high-performance varieties with adaptive potential. The method for assessing ecological plasticity and variants of its stability made it possible to differentiate wheat lines of soft spring competitive testing by their response to changes in gro­wing conditions. For a more optimal selection of breeding material in terms of ecological plasticity and stability, breeding programs should take into account ranked estimates of genotypes. | Мета. Використовуючи статистичні методи, проаналізувати за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності лінії конкурсного випробування пшениці м’якої ярої і виявити серед них такі, що вирізняються високою стабільністю врожайності зерна.Методи. Дослідження проводили протягом 2018–2020 рр. на базі Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. У процесі оброблення отриманих результатів послуговувалися загально­прийнятими методами генетико-статистичного аналізу.Результати. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу в різні роки дає змогу отримати інформацію щодо особливостей реакції генотипів на зміну екологічних умов. У результаті проведених досліджень встановлено, що високопластичними є лінії Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0,59), Erythrospermum 15-32  (bi = 0,44) і Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0,22). За розрахунками, екологічно стабільними вважають лінії, варіанса стабільності яких дорівнює нулю (S2di = 0,00) або близька до нуля (S2di = 0,01). З погляду практичності цінними є лінії із сукупним проявом високої екологічної пластичності та стабільності, а саме: Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0,44; S2di = 0,01), що має низьку норму реакції та може забезпечувати незмінно високий рівень врожайності за будь-яких умов вирощування. Найціннішими є генотипи, що поєднують у собі низький рівень коефіцієнта варіації (CV ≤ 10,0%), високу гомеостатичність і селекційну цінність. Серед них – лінії Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206,42, Sc = 4,11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98,41, Sc = 3,91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78,57, Sc = 3,76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54,84, Sc = 3,75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54,60, Sc = 4,17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35,60, Sc = 3,78) і Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46,66, Sc = 3,58).Висновки. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу має важливе значення для створення нових високопродуктивних сортів з адаптивним потенціалом. Метод оцінки екологічної пластичності та варіанси її стабільності дав змогу диференціювати лінії пшениці м’якої ярої конкурсного випробування за реакцією на зміну умов вирощування. Для оптимальнішого відбору селекційного матеріалу за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності у селекційних програмах слід враховувати ранжовані оцінки генотипів.

Достатньо високі показники отримано у Вінницькій, Київській (зона Лісостепу) та Кіровоградській (зона Степу) областях (1,86–2,02 т/га). Низьку врожайність за 10 років відзначено у Рівненській, Житомирській та Волинській областях, які належать до зони Полісся (1,09–1,34 т/га). Показано, що протягом 2011–2015 рр. висока варіабельність урожайності проса спостерігалася в Хмельницькій, Вінницькій та Волинській областях. Коефіцієнт варіації становив 42,0–71,3%. У 2016–2020 рр. найбільшу варіацію відзначено в Донецькій, Волинській та Одеській областях. Коефіцієнт варіації – 31,8–43,9%. Визначено, що за період 2011–2015 рр. високою пластичністю врожайності проса посівного характеризуються Вінницька, Донецька, Київська, Кіровоградська, Сумська, Харківська, Хмельницька, Черкаська та Полтавська області. У проміжок із 2016 до 2020 рр. високу пластичність ознаки врожайності відзначено у Вінницькій, Київській, Харківській, Полтавській, Черкаській, Сумській та Хмельницькій областях. Висновки. За результатами проведених досліджень установлено, що під час скорочення посівних площ під просом посівним у світі, обсяг його виробництва в Україні збільшується. Визначено, що найбільша врожайність просо посівного за досліджувані роки отримана в зоні Лісостепу. Відповідно до розрахованої пластичності врожайності проса посівного визначено, що для реалізації біологічного потенціалу сприятливі умови були в Донецькій та Кіровоградській областях зони Степу, у лісостеповій зоні – Полтавська, Київська, Харківська, Хмельницька, Черкаська та Сумська області.

BACKGROUND: Developing drought-tolerant crops critically depends on the efficient response of a genotype to the limited water availability, a trait known as phenological plasticity. Our understanding of the phenological plasticity remains limited, in particular, about its relationships with plant developmental program. Here, we examined the plastic response of spring wheat at tillering, booting, heading, and anthesis stages to constant or periodic drought stress. The response was assessed by morphological and physiological parameters including symptoms. RESULTS: The dynamics of morphological symptoms were indicators of the plasticity identification of drought. We found that spring wheat exhibits higher phenological plasticity during tillering stage followed by the heading stage, while booting and anthesis stages are the most sensitive. Also, the adaptive response is thought to be influenced with the plant height genes. Furthermore, periodic stress caused more pronounced inhibition of yield than the constant stress, with limited resistance resolution under long period. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows the importance of considering the phenological plasticity in designing screens for drought tolerance in spring wheat and proposes tillering as the most informative stage for capturing genotypes with tolerance to limit water availability.

Purpose. To identify spring durum wheat accessions with high yield level and by yield components for their involvement in breeding programs as a source material. Methods. Field, statistical. Results. The results of the study of 65 collection samples of spring durum wheat of various ecological and geographical origin in terms of productivity in 2016–2018 are presented. The research results indicate that the samples of spring durum wheat had different yield level depending on the conditions of the year of cultivation. According to the calculations of the degree of yield stability parameters, the samples were found that ensure its level under fluctuations in weather conditions with regression coefficient close to one as follows ‘Omskiy izumrud’ (RUS), ‘Korona’, ‘Toma’, ‘Nauryz 6’ (KAZ), ‘Dura king’, ‘Candura’ (CAN), ‘Tera’, ‘Novatsiia’ (UKR), thus indicating their semi-intensive type. Collection samples of spring durum wheat that under optimal weather conditions are capable of producing significant yield increase are distinguished by wide ecological reaction. These are samples with regression coefficient more than one ‘MIP Raiduzhna’, ‘Hordeiforme 13-07’ (UKR), ‘Lan’, ‘Salaut’, ‘Ertol’ (KAZ), ‘Bezenchukskaya 205’, ‘Lilek’ (RUS). These samples can be characterized by their adaptive properties as intense ones, with a pronounced response to the environment. Over the years of the research, grain number per spike varied from 35.9 to 38.8 pcs. Year conditions in 2016 were the most favorable for plant growth and development, while index of conditions was 4.1, and the average grain number per spike was 41.4 pcs. Year conditions in 2017 and 2018 were less favorable for growth and development of durum spring wheat, and therefore there was a negative value of index of year conditions (lj = -5.1 and lj = 0.5, respectively) with less grain number per spike (32.2 and 38.2 pcs., respectively). According to the trait «1000 kernel weight», the samples were identified with regression coefficient close to one under fluctuations of weather conditions, i.e ‘Korona’, ‘Raya’ (KAZ), ‘Lilek’, ‘Bezenchukskaya 205’ (RUS), ‘MIP Raiduzhna’ (UKR). The grain weight per spike in the collection samples varied from 1.27 to 1.77 g. The stable samples ‘Ertol’, ‘Salaut’, ‘Damsinskaya yantarnaya’ (KAZ), ‘Lilek’ (RUS), ‘Novatsiia’ (UKR), ‘Duraking’, ‘Candura’ (CAN) promising in spring wheat breeding were identified and can be involved in hybridization. Conclusions. Stable and plastic samples were identified among collection material of spring durum wheat in terms of productivity for involvement in scientific programs as source material.

Мета. Оцінити екологічну пластичність урожайності проса посівного в умовах Степу, Лісостепу та Полісся України. Методи. This study aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of agronomic and grain quality traits of 11 spring barley varieties from the Latvian breeding programme grown in two locations for four years. The study was carried out on 11 Latvian spring barley varieties: nine covered varieties ‘Abava’, ‘Ansis’, ‘Austris’, ‘Didzis’, ‘Gāte’, ‘Idumeja’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Kristaps’, and ‘Saule PR’ and two hull-less varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’. Plants of the varieties were grown in field trials of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, at two sites (Priekuļi and Stende) during 2014–2017. Varieties ‘Didzis’, ‘Jumara’, and ‘Ansis’ yielded significantly above the grand mean in eight environments (5.70 t•haE−1; LSD = 0.476 t•haE−1). ‘Didzis’ showed relatively high dynamic yield stability and broad adaptability to all environments (bi = 0.90; b = 1; s2d = 0.07). Grain yield for varieties ‘Jumara’ and ‘Ansis’ showed specific adaptability to unfavourable environments (bi = 0.48 and 0.55, respectively; bi is less than 1). Some covered spring barley varieties were considered to be the best in eight environments with stable and high 1000 grain weight (‘Austris’, ‘Idumeja’), test weight (‘Gāte’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Austris’), lodging resistance (‘Austris’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Didzis’), resistance to Pyrenophora teres (‘Didzis’, ‘Saule PR’) and Blumeria graminis (‘Saule PR’, ‘Didzis’). Both hull-less barley varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’ were distinguished for high crude protein and ß-glucan content.

Purpose. To estimate the ecological plasticity of common millet yield under conditions of Steppe, Forest-Steppe and Forest of Ukraine. Methods. Mathematical and statistical: determination of stability and plasticity by Eberhart & Russell method, correlation analysis. Results. As a result of correlation analysis of millet cultivated areas during the period of 2011?2020, it was revealed that cultivated areas in Ukraine depend on the world ones (r = 0.34). It was determined that a high level of common millet yield was obtained in the forest-steppe zone, namely in Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, Sumy and Kharkiv regions (2.20?2.51 t/ha). Quite high rates of yield were obtained in Vinnytsia, Kyiv (Forest-Steppe zone) and Kirovohrad (Steppe zone) regions (1.86?2.02 t/ha). Low yield over 10 years was noted in Rivne, Zhytomyr and Volyn regions, which belong to the Forrest zone (1.09?1.34 t/ha). It is shown that during 2011?2015 high variability of millet yield was observed in Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia and Volyn regions. The coefficient of variation was 42.0?71.3%. During 2016?2020 significant variation was noted in Donetsk, Volyn and Odesa regions. The coefficient of variation was 31.8?43.9%. In the period from 2016 to 2020, high plasticity of the yield trait was noted in Vinnitsa, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Sumy and Khmelnitsky regions. During 2016?2020 high plasticity trait of millet yield was in Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy and Poltava regions. Conclusions. According to the results of the studies, it was found that with a reduction in the area under millet in the world, the volume of its production in Ukraine increases. It was determined that the hig?hest yield of millet was obtained in the Forest-Steppe zone during the years of observation. Untangling the genetic architecture of grain yield (GY) and yield stability is an important determining factor to optimize genomics-assisted selection strategies in wheat. We conducted in-depth investigation on the above using a large set of advanced bread wheat lines (4,302), which were genotyped with genotyping-by-sequencing markers and phenotyped under contrasting (irrigated and stress) environments. Haplotypes-based genome-wide-association study (GWAS) identified 58 associations with GY and 15 with superiority index Pi (measure of stability). Sixteen associations with GY were “environment-specific” with two on chromosomes 3B and 6B with the large effects and 8 associations were consistent across environments and trials. For Pi, 8 associations were from chromosomes 4B and 7B, indicating ‘hot spot’ regions for stability. Epistatic interactions contributed to an additional 5–9% variation on average. We further explored whether integrating consistent and robust associations identified in GWAS as fixed effects in prediction models improves prediction accuracy. For GY, the model accounting for the haplotype-based GWAS loci as fixed effects led to up to 9–10% increase in prediction accuracy, whereas for Pi this approach did not provide any advantage. This is the first report of integrating genetic architecture of GY and yield stability into prediction models in wheat.

The inconsistent prevalence of abiotic stress in most of the agroecosystems can be addressed through deployment of plant material with stress adaptive plasticity. The present study explores water stress induced plasticity for early root-shoot development, proline induction and cell membrane injury in 57 accessions of Aegilops tauschii (DD-genome) and 26 accessions of Triticum dicoccoides (AABB-genome) along with durum and bread wheat cultivars. Thirty three Ae. tauschii accessions and 18 T. dicoccoides accessions showed an increase in root dry weight (ranging from 1.8 to 294.75%) under water stress. Shoot parameters- length and biomass, by and large were suppressed by water stress, but genotypes with stress adaptive plasticity leading to improvement of shoot traits (e.g., Ae tauschii accession 14191 and T. dicoccoides accession 7130) could be identified. Water stress induced active responses, rather than passive repartitioning of biomass was indicated by better shoot growth in seedlings of genotypes with enhanced root growth under stress. Membrane injury seemed to work as a trigger to activate water stress adaptive cellular machinery and was found positively correlated with several root-shoot based adaptive responses in seedlings. Stress induced proline accumulation in leaf tissue showed marked inter- and intra-specific genetic variation but hardly any association with stress adaptive plasticity. Genotypic variation for early stage plasticity traits viz., change in root dry weight, shoot length, shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight and membrane injury positively correlated with grain weight based stress tolerance index (r = 0.267, r = 0.404, r = 0.299, r = 0.526, and r = 0.359, respectively). In another such trend, adaptive seedling plasticity correlated positively with resistance to early flowering under stress (r = 0.372 with membrane injury, r = 0.286 with change in root length, r = 0.352 with change in shoot length, r = 0.268 with change in shoot dry weight). Overall, Ae. tauschii accessions 9816, 14109, 14128, and T. dicoccoides accessions 5259 and 7130 were identified as potential donors of stress adaptive plasticity. The prospect of the study for molecular marker tagging, cloning of plasticity genes and creation of elite synthetic hexaploid donors is discussed.

Мета. Використовуючи статистичні методи, проаналізувати за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності лінії конкурсного випробування пшениці м’якої ярої і виявити серед них такі, що вирізняються високою стабільністю врожайності зерна. Методи. Дослідження проводили протягом 2018–2020 рр. на базі Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН. У процесі оброблення отриманих результатів послуговувалися загально­прийнятими методами генетико-статистичного аналізу. Результати. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу в різні роки дає змогу отримати інформацію щодо особливостей реакції генотипів на зміну екологічних умов. У результаті проведених досліджень встановлено, що високопластичними є лінії Lutescens 14-32 (bi = 0,59), Erythrospermum 15-32  (bi = 0,44) і Lutescens 14-47 (bi = 0,22). За розрахунками, екологічно стабільними вважають лінії, варіанса стабільності яких дорівнює нулю (S2di = 0,00) або близька до нуля (S2di = 0,01). З погляду практичності цінними є лінії із сукупним проявом високої екологічної пластичності та стабільності, а саме: Erythrospermum 15-32 (bi = 0,44; S2di = 0,01), що має низьку норму реакції та може забезпечувати незмінно високий рівень врожайності за будь-яких умов вирощування. Найціннішими є генотипи, що поєднують у собі низький рівень коефіцієнта варіації (CV ≤ 10,0%), високу гомеостатичність і селекційну цінність. Серед них – лінії Erythrospermum 15-32 (Hom = 206,42, Sc = 4,11), Lutescens 14-47 (Hom = 98,41, Sc = 3,91), Erythrospermum 17-08 (Hom = 78,57, Sc = 3,76), Erythrospermum 14-65 (Hom = 54,84, Sc = 3,75), Lutescens 14-32 (Hom = 54,60, Sc = 4,17), Lutescens 14-13 (Hom = 35,60, Sc = 3,78) і Lutescens 14-48 (Hom = 46,66, Sc = 3,58). Висновки. Оцінка селекційного матеріалу має важливе значення для створення нових високопродуктивних сортів з адаптивним потенціалом. Метод оцінки екологічної пластичності та варіанси її стабільності дав змогу диференціювати лінії пшениці м’якої ярої конкурсного випробування за реакцією на зміну умов вирощування. Для оптимальнішого відбору селекційного матеріалу за показниками екологічної пластичності та стабільності у селекційних програмах слід враховувати ранжовані оцінки генотипів.

Мета. Порівняльна оцінка за врожайністю та адаптивністю сортів ячменю ярого Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН різних років реєстрації. Методи. Дослідження проведені в Миронівському інституті пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН у 2013–2017 рр. відповідно до загальноприйнятих методик. Об’єкт досліджень – 19 сортів ячменю ярого миронівської селекції зареєстрованих в Україні за період 1995–2017 рр. Для характеристики взаємодії генотип–середовище та диференціації сортів за врожайністю і стабільністю використали низку найбільш поширених підходів: S. A. Eberhart, W. A. Russel (1966); G. Wricke (1962); C. S. Lin, M. R. Binns (1988); M. Huehn (1990); А. В. Кильчевский, Л. В. Хотылёва (1985); В. В. Хангильдин, Н. А. Литвиненко (1981); J. L. Purchase та ін. (2000); AMMI; GGE biplot. Результати. Частка умов року досліджень у загальній варіації становила 83,40%. Достовірні, але суттєво нижчі значення мали генотип – 10,65% та взаємодія генотип–середовище – 5,95%. Перші дві головні компоненти GGE biplot пояснювали дещо більшу частку взаємодії генотип–середовище (85,58%) порівняно з AMMI моделлю (80,9%). Кореляційний аналіз виявив, що середня врожайність (Mean) мала вищесередній зв’язок як з максимальним (Max) (r = 0,69), так і мінімальним (Mіn) (r = 0,72) її значеннями. Сильну позитивну кореляцію Mean виявлено з парамет­рами: СЦГі (r = 0,88), Hom (r = 0,86), Sc (r = 0,82). Дуже сильний негативний зв’язок Mean відзначено з Pi (r = -0,96). Для Max середній негативний зв’язок спостерігали лише з Pi (r = -0,60). Mіn сильно корелювала з Sc (r = 0,96), СЦГі (r = 0,87), Hom (r = 0,84). Негативну сильну кореляцію відзначено Min з Sgi (r = -0,86). Між деякими показниками виявлено зв’язок від функціонального позитивного: δ2CAЗi і Кgi (r = 1,00), Wi і Lgi (r = 0,98), СЦГі і Hom (r = 0,98), СЦГі і Sc (r = 0,96), S2di і Wi (r = 0,96), Wi і ASV (r = 0,94), Sc і Hom (r = 0,94), δ2CAЗi і bi (r = 0,93), S2di і ASV (r = 0,93) до сильного негативного: Sgi іСЦГі (r = -0,94), Sgi і Sc(r = -0,92), Sgi і Hom (r = -0,91), Pi і СЦГі (r = -0,83), Pi і Sc (r = -0,80), Pi і Hom (r = -0,79). Висновки. Системна порівняльна оцінка статистичними і графічними підходами свідчить, що внесені до Державного реєстру сортів рослин, придатних для поширення в Україні у 2016–2017 рр. сорти ячменю ярого ‘Віраж’, ‘Талісман Миронівський’, ‘МІП Мирний’, ‘МІП Салют’, ‘МІП Сотник’, ‘МІП Азарт’, ‘МІП Богун’ переважають створені на попередніх етапах селекційної роботи сорти як за продуктивним, так і адаптивним потенціалом.

The article gives analysis of practical value of soybean varieties according to productivity and ecological plasticity in different climatic provinces of Ukraine. Ecological estimation of soybean varieties by the methodology of Eberhart and Rassel has been made. This estimation helped to determine variety plasticity and potential to adaptability. It has been established that varieties Almaz and Diona were the best according to the results of ecological research of varieties. The most favourable regions for cultivation of up-to-date soybean varieties have been chosen. Variety Almaz has been defined as the most intensive and plastic soybean variety (average yield during research years was 2.66–2.93 t/hа). Varieties Antratsit and Ametist also have shown high plasticity. The article gives rank estimation of practical value of soybean varieties on the basis of grain productivity.It has been established that all examined varieties had high economic value – coefficient of agronomic stability is higher than 70%.Variety Almaz has the greatest selective value according to homeostatic character. Almaz is the most intensive variety with maximal plasticity grown in Poltava region.Varieties with high indices of adaptability and plasticity which are very valuable for selection and practical use have been singled out.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance and stability of agronomic and grain quality traits of 11 spring barley varieties from the Latvian breeding programme grown in two locations for four years. The study was carried out on 11 Latvian spring barley varieties: nine covered varieties ‘Abava’, ‘Ansis’, ‘Austris’, ‘Didzis’, ‘Gāte’, ‘Idumeja’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Kristaps’, and ‘Saule PR’ and two hull-less varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’. Plants of the varieties were grown in field trials of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics, at two sites (Priekuïi and Stende) during 2014–2017. Varieties ‘Didzis’, ‘Jumara’, and ‘Ansis’ yielded significantly above the grand mean in eight environments (5.70 t·ha⁻¹; LSD = 0.476 t·ha⁻¹). ‘Didzis’ showed relatively high dynamic yield stability and broad adaptability to all environments (bᵢ = 0.90; b = 1; s²d = 0.07). Grain yield for varieties ‘Jumara’ and ‘Ansis’ showed specific adaptability to unfavourable environments (bᵢ = 0.48 and 0.55, respectively; bᵢ < 1). Some covered spring barley varieties were considered to be the best in eight environments with stable and high 1000 grain weight (‘Austris’, ‘Idumeja’), test weight (‘Gāte’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Austris’), lodging resistance (‘Austris’, ‘Jumara’, ‘Didzis’), resistance to Pyrenophora teres (‘Didzis’, ‘Saule PR’) and Blumeria graminis (‘Saule PR’, ‘Didzis’). Both hull-less barley varieties ‘Irbe’ and ‘Kornelija’ were distinguished for high crude protein and ß-glucan content.

The model, Yᵢⱼ = μ₁ + β₁Iⱼ + δᵢⱼ, defines stability parameters that may be used to describe the performance of a variety over a series of environments. Yᵢⱼ is the variety mean of the iᵗʰ variety at the jₜₕ environment, µ₁ is the iᵗʰ variety mean over all environments, β₁ is the regression coefficient that measures the response of the iᵗʰ variety to varying environments, δᵢⱼ is the deviation from regression of the iᵗʰ variety at the jᵗʰ environment, and Iⱼ is the environmental index. The data from two single-cross diallels and a set of 3-way crosses were examined to see whether genetic differences could be detected. Genetic differences among lines were indicated for the regression of the lines on the environmental index with no evidence of nonadditive gene action. The estimates of the squared deviations from regression for many hybrids were near zero, whereas extremely large estimates were obtained for other hybrids.

Plants respond to environmental conditions not only by plastic changes to their own development and physiology, but also by altering the phenotypes expressed by their offspring. This transgenerational plasticity was initially considered to entail only negative effects of stressful parental environments, such as production of smaller seeds by resource- or temperature-stressed parent plants, and was therefore viewed as environmental noise. Recent evolutionary ecology studies have shown that in some cases, these inherited environmental effects can include specific growth adjustments that are functionally adaptive to the parental conditions that induced them, which can range from contrasting states of controlled laboratory environments to the complex habitat variation encountered by natural plant populations. Preliminary findings suggest that adaptive transgenerational effects can be transmitted by means of diverse mechanisms including changes to seed provisioning and biochemistry, and epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation that can persist across multiple generations. These non-genetically inherited adaptations can influence the ecological breadth and evolutionary dynamics of plant taxa and promote the spread of invasive plants. Interdisciplinary studies that join mechanistic and evolutionary ecology approaches will be an important source of future insights.

Мета. Визначити біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного у різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого.Методи. У процесі досліджень використовували лабораторний, розрахунковий і статистичний методи, для підготовки висновків – аналізу та синтезу.Результати. За результатами лабораторних досліджень визначили біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного в різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого типу розвитку, а саме: вміст олії, «сирого протеїну» та глюкозинолатів. Значний вплив на показники якості насіння мають метеорологічні умови впродовж вегетаційного періоду рослин відповідної ґрунтово-кліматичної зони. Встановлено, що у 2022 р. біохімічні показники насіння ріпаку озимого були вищими ніж у 2020 р. Зростання урожайності на 1,6 т/га у зоні Степу, 1,1 т/га – Лісостепу, 1,4 т/га – Полісся забезпечило підвищення вмісту олії на 2,4, 6,6 та 6,7% відповідно. Збори олії з гектара збільшилися на 0,74 т/га у зонах Степу та Полісся, 0,62 т/га – Лісостепу.  У 2022 р., порівнюючи з 2020, спостерігали зниження показника «сирого протеїну»: на 3,1% у зоні Степу, 5,8% – Лісостепу та 5,0% – Полісся. На вміст глюкозинолатів впливали умови років досліджень у відповідних ґрунтово-кліматичних зонах. Степ і Лісостеп мали ідентичні показники – 0,7%, Полісся – 0,8%, тоді як у 2021 р. для зони Степу та Полісся вміст глюкозинолатів у насінні ріпаку був на 0,8 та 0,9% більшим, порівнюючи з показниками, отриманими в інші роки досліджень.Висновки. Встановлено, що в середньому за 2020–2022 рр. загальний вміст олії в насінні ріпаку становив 46,2% (Степ), 47,5% (Лісостеп) і 47,8% (Полісся); вміст «сирого протеїну» – 19,6% (Степ), 18,4% (Лісостеп) і 17,9% (Полісся); вміст глюкозинолатів – 0,7% (Степ та Лісостеп) і 0,8% (Полісся). Збір олії в зоні Степу мав показник 1,31 т/га, Лісостепу – 1,16 т/га, Полісся – 1,33 т/га. Збір білка з гектара становив 0,54 т/га для Степу, 0,44 т/га – Лісостепу та 0,48 т/га – Полісся. Умови вирощування за роки досліджень у відповідній зоні впливають на формування біохімічних показників насіння ріпаку озимого. | Purpose. To determine the biochemical indicators of seed quality of winter rape varieties grown under different conditions.Methods. During the research, the following methods were used: laboratory, calculation and statistical, to prepare conclusions – analysis and synthesis.Results. According to the results of laboratory studies, biochemical indicators of the quality of seeds of winter rape varieties, grown in different conditions, were established, namely: the content of oil, “crude protein” and glucosinolates. Meteorological conditions during the vegetation period of plants of the corresponding soil and climate zone have a significant influence on the quality indicators of seeds. Based on the results of the research, it was established that in 2022, compared to 2020, the biochemical indicators of winter rapeseed were higher. The increase in yield by 1.6 t/ha in the Steppe zone, 1.1 t/ha – Forest-Steppe, 1.4 t/ha – Polissia ensured an increase in oil content by 2.4% – Steppe, 6.6% – Forest-Steppe, 6.7% – Polissia and oil collection per hectare by 0.74 t/ha – Steppe and Polissia, 0.62 t/ha – Forest-Steppe. For the content of “crude protein”, a decrease in the index was observed, namely: by 3.1% in the Steppe zone, 5.8% in the Forest-Steppe and 5.0% in the Polissia in 2022 compared to 2020. Meteorological conditions of the research years in the corresponding soil and climatic zones had an influence on the content of glucosinolates. For the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones, the indicators were identical and amounted to 0.7%, 0.8% (Polissia), while in 2021, for the Steppe and Polissia zones, the content of glucosinolates in rapeseed was 0.8% and 0.9% more, compared to the indicators obtained in other years of research.Conclusions. It was established that, on average, for 2020–2022, the total oil content in seeds of rape was 46.2% – Steppe, 47.5% – Forest-Steppe, 47.8% – Polissia; “crude protein” content – 19.6% – Steppe, 18.4% – Forest-Steppe, 17.9% – Polissia; the content of glucosinolates was 0.7% in the Steppe and Forest-steppe zones, 0.8% in the Polissia; oil collection in the Steppe zone 1.31 t/ha, Forest-Steppe – 1.16 t/ha, Polissia – 1.33 t/ha; protein collection per hectare is 0.54 t/ha in Steppe, 0.44 t/ha in Forest-Steppe and 0.48% in Polissia. Growing conditions over the years of research in the corresponding zone affect the formation of biochemical indicators of winter rapeseed.

Accounting for co-products of vegetable oil production is essential in reviewing the sustainability of biodiesel production, especially since oil crops produce valuable protein-rich co-products in different quantities and qualities. Two accounting methods, allocation on the basis of energy content and system expansion, are compared. Significant differences in results exist between the methods where system expansion is to be preferred because it can take actual use of co-products into account. Results are very sensitive to the choices made in system expansion. Differences can be large, especially between a system expansion where primarily the use of co-products of the oil crops is taken into account and an expansion that also includes direct oil exchange of the vegetable oil used for biodiesel for the marginal oil in the market.

In this study, the seeds of open-pollinated winter rapeseed cultivars, hybrid winter rapeseed cultivars, open-pollinated spring rapeseed cultivars and hybrid spring rapeseed cultivars were investigated. The physical, optical, mechanical, geometric and image texture properties of rapeseeds were compared. Statistical models were developed based on the analyzed parameters to discriminate between seed groups. Most parameters effectively discriminated between cultivars of winter and spring rapeseed, including true density, porosity, L*, a*, b*, and spectral values at 400 nm, 470 nm, 500–530 nm, 560–620 nm, 640–650 nm and 690 nm. Four homogeneous groups were identified based on linear dimensions: F (surface area), S (width) and shape factors W6 (circularity ratio), Rb (Blair-Bliss coefficient) and W13 (roundness). No statistically significant differences in the mean values of hardness or area under the force-displacement graph were observed between seed groups. The model developed based on image texture variables from channel Y (luminance) was characterized by the highest discrimination accuracy of 82–87%. The experimental groups were classified with 89–92% accuracy in the model combining the best variables from each group of physical parameters. Total classification accuracy in neural networks reached 75% for a validation set comprising geometric properties and 91–92% for a validation set containing physical characteristics.

Мета. Визначити біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного у різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого. Методи. У процесі досліджень використовували лабораторний, розрахунковий і статистичний методи, для підготовки висновків – аналізу та синтезу. Результати. За результатами лабораторних досліджень визначили біохімічні показники якості вирощуваного в різних умовах насіння сортів ріпаку озимого типу розвитку, а саме: вміст олії, «сирого протеїну» та глюкозинолатів. Значний вплив на показники якості насіння мають метеорологічні умови впродовж вегетаційного періоду рослин відповідної ґрунтово-кліматичної зони. Встановлено, що у 2022 р. біохімічні показники насіння ріпаку озимого були вищими ніж у 2020 р. Зростання урожайності на 1,6 т/га у зоні Степу, 1,1 т/га – Лісостепу, 1,4 т/га – Полісся забезпечило підвищення вмісту олії на 2,4, 6,6 та 6,7% відповідно. Збори олії з гектара збільшилися на 0,74 т/га у зонах Степу та Полісся, 0,62 т/га – Лісостепу.  У 2022 р., порівнюючи з 2020, спостерігали зниження показника «сирого протеїну»: на 3,1% у зоні Степу, 5,8% – Лісостепу та 5,0% – Полісся. На вміст глюкозинолатів впливали умови років досліджень у відповідних ґрунтово-кліматичних зонах. Степ і Лісостеп мали ідентичні показники – 0,7%, Полісся – 0,8%, тоді як у 2021 р. для зони Степу та Полісся вміст глюкозинолатів у насінні ріпаку був на 0,8 та 0,9% більшим, порівнюючи з показниками, отриманими в інші роки досліджень. Висновки. Встановлено, що в середньому за 2020–2022 рр. загальний вміст олії в насінні ріпаку становив 46,2% (Степ), 47,5% (Лісостеп) і 47,8% (Полісся); вміст «сирого протеїну» – 19,6% (Степ), 18,4% (Лісостеп) і 17,9% (Полісся); вміст глюкозинолатів – 0,7% (Степ та Лісостеп) і 0,8% (Полісся). Збір олії в зоні Степу мав показник 1,31 т/га, Лісостепу – 1,16 т/га, Полісся – 1,33 т/га. Збір білка з гектара становив 0,54 т/га для Степу, 0,44 т/га – Лісостепу та 0,48 т/га – Полісся. Умови вирощування за роки досліджень у відповідній зоні впливають на формування біохімічних показників насіння ріпаку озимого.

This paper aims to assess and compare the sustainability of rapeseed and sunflower crop cultivation for energy purposes in Italy, by considering environmental and economic performances at the farm level. The analysis focused on twelve representative farming units that were extracted from a sample of 396 farms by applying a cluster analysis. Using an Attributional Life Cycle Assessment method, the values of midpoint environmental impact categories and the carbon footprint of the twelve farms were assessed. The economic performance of rapeseed and sunflower per 1 Mg of biomass cultivation was measured in terms of the value added. In order to combine an environmental and economic assessment, the eco-efficiency ratio was applied to measure the value added per Mg of greenhouse gasses emitted into the atmosphere. Three rapeseed farms had the lowest GHG emissions of the whole sample. Practices of intensive farming with high fertilization and mechanization (fertilizer and machinery production and usage) are known to have a negative environmental impact. When the level of productivity is low, the impact is still higher. Regarding the eco-efficiency ratio, of the twelve representative farming units, results showed again that the three rapeseed farms had the highest eco-efficiency ratio. Summarizing both perspectives, findings from the eco-efficiency analysis gave a premium to rapeseed over sunflower crop in terms of the economic value added per kg of GHGs emitted into the atmosphere. The study findings presented a complex picture of the crops and of agricultural practices of each farm that underlines the variability and sensitivity of results in specific case studies. Indeed, the complexity of the matter, including the implications of bioenergy crops for energy and food safety beyond the environmental and economic assessment of the cultivation phase, cannot be ignored. Further studies are needed to apply a multiple perspective to the joint analysis of the sustainability of agricultural processes related to first generation bioenergy crops.

Purpose. Winter garlic is a heterogeneous biological material, and due to the complex of its diverse morphological and economically valuable features (in nature and culture), it is possible to select promising forms. Crop productivity is determined by climatic variables such as temperature and precipitation (the main abiotic environmental factors). Given the current trends in climate change, it is important to carry out analyzes aimed at describing and selecting plant genotypes with the best adaptive and productive properties. The investigation is focused on studying the adaptive and productive potential of promising samples of Allium sativum L. subsp. sagittatum together with the varieties on which the production of garlic in Ukraine is based, according to such characteristics as “bulb mass”, “yield” and “essential oil content”.Methods. During 2020–2022, in field conditions (Uman, 48°46¢N, 30°14¢E), five common and two newly created (‘Apollon’ and ‘Dzhovanna’) varieties of winter garlic were studied, as well as its promising variety samples No. 25 and 40. The obtained results were evaluated by the method of regression analysis to determine the stability and plasticity of the varieties.Results were conditionally divided into two groups according to parameters. The first group contained results that show the most important adaptive and productive characteristics (bulb mass, yield, plasticity, stability, selection value, adaptability). The second one included the parameters of the biochemical properties of the studied populations (essential oil), which in this case demonstrated significant influence and substantial stability. Most of the researched garlic populations are able to serve as effective material for obtaining new varieties. They can be classified as follows: ‘Khando’, ‘Dzhovanna’, ‘Apollon’, No. 25 and No. 40 – high yield, adaptability and breeding value; ‘Sofiivskyi’, ‘Apollon’ and No. 40 – technological quality (technical varieties); ‘Giovanna’ – food quality (table variety).Conclusions. As a result of the conducted research, the spectrum of adaptive variability of A. sativum L. subsp. sagittatum in terms of bulb weight and yield, and new promising samples which can be used as starting material for the creation of new adaptive varieties were discovered. | Мета. Часник озимий – гетерогенний біологічний матеріал, за комплексом багатоманітних морфологічних і господарсько-цінних ознак якого (у природі та культурі) можна здійснювати добір перспективних форм. Продуктивність культури визначають такі кліматичні змінні, як температура й опади (основні абіотичні фактори навколишнього середовища). З огляду на сучасні тенденції до зміни клімату важливо проводити аналізи, спрямовані на опис та відбір генотипів рослин з найкращими адаптивними й продуктивними властивостями. Дослідження зосереджено на вивченні адаптивно-продуктивного потенціалу перспективних зразків Allium sativum L. subsp. sagittatum сукупно з сортами, на яких базується виробництво часнику в Україні, за такими ознаками, як «маса цибулини», «врожайність» і «вміст ефірної олії».Методи. Впродовж 2020–2022 рр. у польових умовах (м. Умань, 48°46′N, 30°14′E) досліджували п’ять поширених і два новостворені (‘Аполлон’ і ‘Джованна’) сорти часнику озимого, а також його перспективні сортозразки № 25 і 40. Отримані результати оцінювали методом регресійного аналізу для визначення стабільності та пластичності сортів.Результати досліджень умовно поділяли на дві групи за параметрами. Перша містила результати, які показують найважливіші адаптивно-продуктивні характеристики (маса цибулини, врожайність, пластичність, стабільність, селекційна цінність, адаптивність). Друга – параметри біохімічних властивостей досліджуваних популяцій (ефірна олія), які у цьому разі демонстрували значний вплив та істотну стабільність. Більшість досліджених популяцій часнику здатні слугувати результативним матеріалом для одержання нових сортів. Їх можна класифікувати так: ‘Хандо’, ‘Джованна’, ‘Аполлон’, № 25 і № 40 – висока врожайність, адаптивність і селекційна цінність; ‘Софіївський’, ‘Аполлон’ і № 40 – технологічна якість (технічні сорти); ‘Джованна’ – харчова якість (столовий сорт).Висновки. У результаті проведених досліджень встановлено спектр адаптивної мінливості сортів A. sativum L. subsp. sagittatum за показниками маси цибулини та врожайності й виявлено нові перспективні зразки, що можуть бути використані як вихідний матеріал для створення нових адаптивних сортів.

Мета. Дослідити ступінь прояву послабленого стрілкування нестрілкуючих колекційних зразків часнику озимого різного еколого-географічного походження в умовах Правобережного Лісостепу України. Методи. Впродовж 2020–2022 рр. у польових умовах (м. Умань, 48°46’N, 30°14’E) вивчали дев’ять місцевих та інтродукованих зразків часнику озимого (№ 19, 27, 33, 43 і 44 з Черкаської обл., № 14 з Тернопільської обл., № 1 з Іспанії, № 16 із Франції, № 35 з Азербайджану). Під час розгляду отриманих результатів використовували загальноприйняті методи генетико-статис­тичного аналізу. Результати. Дослідженнями визначено, що у процесі утворення редукованої квітконосної стрілки маса цибулини знижувалася на 7,6–31,1% залежно від зразка, а врожайність – на 6,1–38,6%. Серед колекційних зразків за показником «маса цибулини» виділили № 16 і 44 – 57,22 і 52,24 г відповідно. Адаптивними за цією ознакою були зразки № 16, 19 і 44; інтенсивними – № 16, 27, 33 і 44, а стабільними – № 14, 19, 35 і 43. Виявлено помітну залежність між коефіцієнтом генетичної й екологічної варіації (CVG/CVA) для ознак «маса цибулини» і «врожайність», проте високої продуктивності досягнуто за умови співвідношення CVG/CVA ≥ 1. Як вихідний матеріал для подальшої селекції за ознакою «врожайність» виділено зразки: за адаптивністю й екологічною пластичністю – № 16 і 44; за стабільністю – № 19, 35 і 43 та інтенсивного типу – № 16, 27, 33 і 44, що забезпечують високу врожайність в оптимальних умовах культивування. Всі досліджувані зразки, які утворювали повітряні цибулини, характеризувалися дуже великою масою 1000 цибулин, у середньому – 1156,76 г. Максимальною масою 1000 шт. цибулин відзначилися № 16 і 27 – 1225,73 і 1638,0 г відповідно. Висновки. Отримані у Правобережному Лісостепу України дані слугуватимуть для розроблення схеми селекційних досліджень в умовах інтродукції. В результаті досліджень створено робочу колекцію вихідного матеріалу для селекції часнику класичним методом – клоновим добором. | Purpose. To investigate the degree of reduced scape of softneck collection specimens of winter garlic of different ecological and geographical origin in the conditions of the Right Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. Methods. During 2020–2022, nine local and introduced varieties of winter garlic (Nos. 19, 27, 33, 43 and 44 from Cherkasy) were stu­died in field conditions (Uman, 48°46’N, 30°14’E) region, No. 14 from Ternopil region, No. 1 from Spain, No. 16 from France and No. 35 from Azerbaijan). Generally accepted methods of genetico-statistical analysis were used to evaluate the garlic collection. Results. The research revealed that the weight of the bulb decreased by 7.6–31.1%, depending on the sample, and the yield by 6.1–38.6% during the formation of a reduced scape. Among the collection samples, according to the “bulb weight” indicator, Nos. 16 and 44 stood out – 57.22 and 52.24 g, respectively, of the sample. Adap­table for this feature were samples Nos. 16, 19 and 44; intensive – Nos. 16, 27, 33 and 44, and stable samples were Nos. 14, 19, 35 and 43. A significant relationship between the coefficient of genetic and environmental variation (CVG/CVA) for the traits “bulb weight” and “yield” was revealed. However, CVG/CVA ratio ≥ 1 is required to obtain high performance. Samples were selected as the initial material for further breeding based on the “yield” feature: according to adaptability and ecological plasticity – Nos. 16 and 44; according to stability – Nos. 19, 35 and 43 and samples of the intensive type – 16, 27, 33 and 44, which will ensure high yields in optimal cultivation conditions. All studied samples that formed air bulbs were characterized by a very large 1000 bulb weight, on average 1156.76 g. The maximum of 1000 bulb weight was characteristic for samples No. 16 and 27 – 1225.73 and 1638.0 g, respectively. Conclusions. The data obtained in the Right Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine will be used to develop a breeding research scheme under the conditions of introduction. As a result of the research, a working collection of raw material was created for the breeding of garlic by the classical method – clonal breeding.

The question of choice of selection criterion when lines are grown in stress and non-stress environments is examined from a theoretical standpoint in this paper. Tolerance to stress is defined as the difference in yield between stress and non-stress environments, while mean productivity is the average yield in stress and non-stress environments. Equations are developed for the genetic correlations of tolerance and mean productivity with one another and with yields in stress and non-stress environments in terms of the ratio of genetic variances and the genetic correlations between yields in stress and non-stress environments. These equations show that selection for tolerance to stress will generally result in a reduced mean yield in non-stress environments and a decrease in mean productivity. Selection for mean productivity will generally increase mean yields in both stress and non-stress environments. Tolerance and mean productivity show negative genetic correlations whent he genetic variance in stress environmentsi s less than the genetic variance in non-stress environments. This result provides an explanation for the positive correlations often reported between regression coefficient stability and mean productivity; a line with high tolerance to stress normally would have a low regression coefficient stability and genetic variances in stress environments are generally lower than in non-stress enviornments.

Background The genus Allium (Family: Amaryllidaceae) is an economically important group of crops cultivated worldwide for their use as a vegetable and spices. Alliums are also well known for their nutraceutical properties. Among alliums, onion, garlic, leek, and chives cultivated worldwide. Despite their substantial economic and medicinal importance, the genome sequence of any of the Allium is not available, probably due to their large genome sizes. Recently evolved omics technologies are highly efficient and robust in elucidating molecular mechanisms of several complex life processes in plants. Omics technologies, such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, etc. have the potential to open new avenues in research and improvement of allium crops where genome sequence information is limited. A significant amount of data has been generated using these technologies for various Allium species; it will help in understanding the key traits in Allium crops such as flowering, bulb development, flavonoid biosynthesis, male sterility and stress tolerance at molecular and metabolite level. This information will ultimately assist us in speeding up the breeding in Allium crops. Method In the present review, major omics approaches, and their progress, as well as potential applications in Allium crops, could be discussed in detail. Results Here, we have discussed the recent progress made in Allium research using omics technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, micro RNAs, proteomics, metabolomics, and metagenomics. These omics interventions have been used in alliums for marker discovery, the study of the biotic and abiotic stress response, male sterility, organ development, flavonoid and bulb color, micro RNA discovery, and microbiome associated with Allium crops. Further, we also emphasized the integrated use of these omics platforms for a better understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms to speed up the breeding programs for better cultivars. Conclusion All the information and literature provided in the present review throws light on the progress and potential of omics platforms in the research of Allium crops. We also mentioned a few research areas in Allium crops that need to be explored using omics technologies to get more insight. Overall, alliums are an under-studied group of plants, and thus, there is tremendous scope and need for research in Allium species.

Genetic variability is the fundamental requirement for any plant breeding program to develop a superior cultivar. This study aimed to estimate the genetic variability and determine the correlation between the various quantitative characteristics of garlic accessions. The experiment was carried out in the Ezo-Otte area of the Chencha district in the Gamo highlands of southern Ethiopia and 28 garlic accessions were evaluated in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replicates. Various morphological descriptors were measured to evaluate the variability and correlation coefficients. The analysis of variance showed a highly significant variation for all characters, which indicates greater variability in the accession. High and moderate heritability in broad sense estimates were obtained for the majority of the traits examined. Days to maturity (28.09), bulb weight (22.33), and bulb diameter (equatorial) (21.33) showed higher genetic advance. The maximum value of the genetic progress as a percentage of the mean was observed in bulb yield, clove weight, bulb diameter (equatorial), and number of leaves. In addition, bulb diameter (equatorial), clove weight, bulb weight, and plant height were observed to be highly hereditary coupled with high genetic advance as a percentage of the mean, suggesting that they can be improved by direct selection. Coefficient analysis has shown that maximum attention should be paid to bulb diameter (equatorial), the number of cloves, bulb diameter (equatorial), bulb weight, plant height, and leaf length, as these traits also correlate positively and significantly with bulb yield.

According to the actual observations of weather conditions, which were held at the meteorological station Uman, by mathematical processing of data and its analysis on the basis of long-term values (avarage for 30 years - from 1961 till 1990), agrometeorological characteristics of 2019–2020 agricultural year was presented. A characteristic feature of this year was the increased temperature background, scarcity of rainfall in summer and air-soil drought, which began in June and continued until the end of summer. The average atmospheric temperature of the agricultural year amounted 10,8 °C, it was by 3,4 °C higher than the long-term average. In the cold season (December - March) sum excess was 23°C, and for the warm season (April - September) 11,7 °C. The total rainfall for the year – 415,4 mm, it is on 217,6 mm less than normal. Therefore, the long-term summer rainfall defi cit was a limiting factor for plants growth and development.

В статті наведено дані щодо температури повітря та кількість атмосферних опадів від жовтня 2020 до вересня 2021 рр., а також зроблено їхній аналіз порівняно з середніми багаторічними даними ( за 30 років – з 1991 по 2020 рр.). Характерною особливістю цього сільськогосподарського року був сприятливий температурний фон, і достатня кількість опадів . Середня температура повітря сільськогосподарського року склала 9,2°С, тобто була лише на 0,4°С вище середньобагаторічної. При цьому, в холодний період (грудень–березень) сумарне перевищення температури склало 1,4°С, а за теплий період (квітень–вересень) сумарне зменшення на 1,9°С. Загальна кількість опадів за рік склала 655,7 мм, що на 69 мм перевищило середньобагаторічну позначку.

Мета. Інтродуковані сорти сочевиці (Lens culinaris Medik.), країнами походження яких є Канада та Іспанія, оцінити за комплексом показників продуктивності й адаптивності, продемонстрованих ними в умовах південної частини Лісостепу України. Методи. Впродовж 2019–2021 рр. на Устимівській дослідній станції рослинництва Інституту рослинництва ім. В. Я. Юр’єва НААН (Полтавська обл., 49o18’21” N, 33o13’56” E) досліджували 26 нових зразків сочевиці, що походять з Іспанії та Канади. У фазі достигання бобів і насіння (BBCH 86–90) в польових та лабораторних умовах визначали показники врожайності, продуктивності, маси 1000 насінин, скоростиглості, висоти рослин та прикріплення нижніх бобів над рівнем ґрунту, кількості бобів і насіння на рослині, кількості насіння в бобі, параметри бобу. Результати. Виявлено значне варіювання врожайності нових зразків сочевиці – від 127 до 258 г/м2. Найбільшими її показниками відзначилися сорти ‘CDC Creenstar’ і ‘CDC Cherie’ з Канади та ‘Angela’ й ‘Amaya’ з Іспанії. Найпродуктивнішими під час досліджень виявилися ‘CDC Cherie’ (4,4 г), ‘CDC Creenstar’ (4,2 г), ‘CDC Greenland’ (4,5 г), ‘CDC Imigreen’ (4,4 г), ‘CDC QG-2’ (4,1 г), ‘CDC Impulse’ (4,0 г) – Канада; ‘Angela’ (4,6 г) – Іспанія, що зумовлено підвищеними кількістю насінин і масою 1000 зерен. Найбільшу кількість бобів на рослині зафіксовано в сортів ‘CDC Imax’ (64,4 шт.), ‘CDC Impala’ (65,5 шт.), ‘CDC QG-2’ (67,4 шт.), ‘CDC Creenstar’ (67,8 шт.) і ‘CDC Cherie’ (75,2 шт.) – Канада; ‘Amaya’ (64,8 шт.) та ‘Angela’ (75,1 шт.) – Іспанія. Майже всі досліджені зразки виявилися середньостиглими (81–85 діб) та оптимальними для зони Південного Лісостепу України. Найскоростиглішими (76 діб) були канадські сорти ‘CDC QG-2’, ‘CDC SB-2’, ‘CDC Impulse’, ‘CDC Imvincible’ та ‘CDC Impact’. На особливу увагу заслуговують ‘CDC Creenstar’, ‘CDC Greenland’, ‘CDC Impulse’ та ‘CDC Impact’ з Канади, а також ‘Angela’ з Іспанії, які поєднали в собі кілька цінних ознак. Висновки. Вищезазначені сорти є придатними для вирощування в зоні Південного Лісостепу України та можуть бути рекомендовані як джерела цінних ознак для практичного використання в селекції.

Introduction. National varietal plant resources are of particular importance for the economic development of Ukraine, because they ensure the stability of the crop industry as a component of the country’s food security. The analysis of the historiography of the development of the state variety testing since 1923 showed the lack of a systematic study of the formation of the State Register of Plant Varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine (hereinafter – the Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine). Purpose. To reveal the historical stages of the formation of national plant varietal resources, and substantiate the concept of their development. Methods. A collection of commonly known plant varieties that are or were in commercial circulation. Research methods – general scientific: hypothesis, observation, analysis, synthesis method for drawing conclusions; source study database with elements of extrapolation, which is formed based on the results of field, laboratory and analytical research. Results. The study of the history of state variety testing regulation made it possible to find out that the variety testing netork in Ukraine was established in 1923. The refore, the formation of national varietal plant resources has its own almost a hundred-year history. At all historical stages of the formation of national varietal resources, a variety with a complex of its morphobiological and economically valuable characteristics remains the subject of the research. State registration of a variety or rights to it ensures the commercial circulation of the variety. Identification of plant varieties, as the basis for varietal certification, increases the turnover of varieties on the market, ensures the growth of production volumes and improves the quality of crop products. Plant varieties distributed on the territory of Ukraine correspond to the criteria of distinctness, uniformity and stability generally accepted in international practice; meet the needs of consumers in terms of economically valuable characteristics; do not threaten the environment and human health. The formation of national plant varietal resources takes place in stages with the tendency to increase the economically valuable criteria, which ensures the competitiveness of the modern market of varieties and seeds in accordance with international requirements. Conclusions. The formation of plant varietal resources to meet the needs of consumers and/or breeding practice in Ukraine took place due to rather long historical stages of development and introduction of plant diversity, forms, criteria and methodology of varietal testing in time and space. The substantiation of the historical aspects of the concept of the varietal resources formation will allow optimizing the structure of the variety testing network, organizational foundations of the state registration of varieties and the protection of breeder’s rights. | Вступ. Національні сортові рослинні ресурси мають особливе значення для економічного розвитку України, адже вони забезпечують стабільність галузі рослинниц­тва як складової продовольчої безпеки держави. Аналіз історіографії розвитку державного сортовипробування з 1923 року показав відсутність системного дослідження формуванняя Державного реєстру сортів рослин, придатних для поширення в Україні (далі – Реєстр сортів рослин України). Мета. Розкрити історичні етапи формування національних рослинних сортових ресурсів, та обгрунтувати концепцію їхнього розвитку. Методи. Колекція загальновідомих сортів рослин, які перебува­ють чи перебували в комерційному обігу. Методи досліджень – загальнонаукові: гіпотеза, спостереження, аналіз, метод синтезу для формування висновків; джерелознавча база даних з елементами екстрополяції, яка формується за результатами польового, лабораторного та аналітичного дослідження. Результати. Дослідження історії регулювання державного сортовипробування дало змогу з’ясувати, що сортовипробувальна мережа в Україні була створена в 1923 році. Тому формування національних рослинних сортових реурсів має свою майже стодлітню історію. На всіх історичних етапах формування національних рослинних сортових ресурсів предметом дослідження залишається сорт з комплексом своїх морфобіологічних та господарсько-цінних характеристик. Державна реєстрація сорту або прав на нього забезпечує комерційний обіг сорту. Ідентифікація сортів рослин як основа сортової сертифікації збільшує обіг сортів на ринку, забезпечує зростання обсягів виробництва та підвищення якості продукції рослинництва. Сорти рослин, поширені на території України, відповідають загальноприйнятим у міжнародній практиці критеріям відмінності, однорідності та стабільності; задовольняють потреби споживачів за господарсько-цінними характеристиками; не загрожують довкіллю і здоров’ю людини. Формування національних рослинних сортових ресурсів відбувається поетапно з тенденцією підвищення господарсько-цінних критеріїв, що забезпечує конкурентність сучасного ринку сортів і насіння відповідно до міжнародних вимог. Висновки. Формування рослинних сортових ресурсів для задоволення потреб споживачів та/або селекційної практики в Україні відбувалось завдяки доволі тривалим історичним етапам розвитку та інтродукції рослинного різноманіття, форм, критеріїв і методології сортовипробувальної справи в часі і просторі. Об´рунтування історичних аспектів концепції формування сортових ресурсів дозволить оптимізувати структуру сортовипробувальної мережі, організаційні основи державної реєстрації сортів та охорони прав селекціонера.

Національні сортові рослинні ресурси мають особливе значення для економічного розвитку України, адже вони забезпечують стабільність галузі рослинниц­тва як складової продовольчої безпеки держави. Аналіз історіографії розвитку державного сортовипробування з 1923 року показав відсутність системного дослідження формуванняя Державного реєстру сортів рослин, придатних для поширення в Україні (далі – Реєстр сортів рослин України). Об´рунтування історичних аспектів концепції формування сортових ресурсів дозволить оптимізувати структуру сортовипробувальної мережі, організаційні основи державної реєстрації сортів та охорони прав селекціонера.

Purpose. To evaluate the varieties: ‘MIP Assol’, ‘Balada Myronivska’, ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’, ‘MIP Yuvileina’, ‘MIP Lada’, ‘MIP Dniprianka’ and the standard variety ‘Podolianka’ and promising breeding lines: ‘Erythrospermum 55023’, ‘Lutescens 22198’, ‘Lutescens 37519’, ‘Lutescens 60049’, ‘Lutescens 60107’ winter wheat of the Mironovka`s breeding according to grain quality indicators.Methods. The research was conducted during the 2019–2021 in the breeding crop rotation of the winter wheat breeding laboratory of the V. M. Remeslo Myronivka Institute of Wheat, NAАS of Ukraine. The main method of research was laboratory and field, supplemented by analytical studies, measurements, calculations and observations.Results. The following breeding lines were the best in terms of protein content during the first sowing period: ‘Erythrospermum 55023’ (11.9%), ‘Lutescens 55198’ (12.8%), ‘Lutescens 37519’ (11.7%) and ‘Lutescens 60107’ (10.7%). During the second sowing period, the best varieties and breeding lines turned out to be ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’ (11.4%), ‘MIP Dniprianka’ (12.3%), ‘Erythrospermum 55023’ (12.3 %), ‘Lutescens 55198’ (11.4%), ‘Lutescens 37519’ (12.3%) and ‘Lutescens 60049’ (12.8%). According to the grain vitrification index during the first sowing period, the following can be distinguished: ‘Balada Myronivska’ (86.7%), ‘MIP Lada’ (89.3%), ‘MIP Dniprianka’ (87.3%), ‘Erythrospermum 55023’ (86.3 %), ‘Lutescens 55198’ (94.3 %) and ‘Lutescens 37519’ (91.0 %). During the second sowing period, these were ‘Balada Myronivska’ (86.7%), ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’ (79.3%), ‘MIP Lada’ (85.0%), ‘MIP Dniprianka’ (81.7%) and breeding lines ‘Lutescens 55198’ (80.7%) and ‘Lutescens 60049’ (81.3%). According to the content of raw gluten, the variety ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’ (26.2%) was selected. For all studied breeding lines, the value of the crude gluten content indicator varied from 26.0% to 29.9%. Du­ring the second sowing period, a higher percentage of raw gluten content was noted in the varieties ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’ (29.9%) and ‘MIP Dniprianka’ (27.4%) and selection lines – ‘Erythrospermum 55023’ (28.4%), ‘Lutescens 55198’ (27.4%), ‘Lutescens 37519’ (27.1%) and ‘Lutescens 60049’ (29.1%).Conclusions. During the three years of observations, the weather conditions differed in the amount of precipitation and the sum of active temperatures both during the growing season and during the period of flowering and maturation, which significantly affected the results of the analysis of grain quality indicators of winter wheat varieties and promising lines. Having analyzed the obtained results, it is possible to single out the varieties ‘Hratsiia Myronivska’ and ‘MIP Dniprianka’, as well as the breeding lines: ‘Erythrospermum 55023’, ‘Lutescens 55198’, ‘Lutescens 37519’ and ‘Lutescens 60049’, which exceeded the standard variety ‘Podolianka’ and the average experimental values for such basic indicators as protein content, gluten content, vitreousness and 1000-seed weight. | Мета. Оцінити сорти ‘МІП Ассоль’, ‘Балада Миронівська’, ‘Грація Миронівська’, ‘МІП Ювілейна’, ‘МІП Лада’, ‘МІП Дніпрянка’ та сорт-стандарт ‘Подолянка’ і перспективні селекційні лінії ‘Еритроспермум 55023’, ‘Лютесценс 22198’, ‘Лютесценс 37519’, ‘Лютесценс 60049’ і ‘Лютесценс 60107’ пшениці озимої миронівської селекції за показниками якості зерна.Методи. Дослідження проводили впродовж 2019–2021 рр. у селекційній сівозміні лабораторії селекції озимої пшениці Миронівського інституту пшениці імені В. М. Ремесла НААН України. Основні методи досліджень – лабораторний, польовий та аналітичний, доповнені вимірами, підрахунками і спостереженнями.Результати. За вмістом білка протягом першого строку сівби кращими були такі селекційні лінії: ‘Еритроспермум 55023’ (11,9%), ‘Лютесценс 55198’ (12,8%), ‘Лютесценс 37519’ (11,7%) та ‘Лютесценс 60107’ (10,7%). Упродовж другого строку сівби кращими сортами та селекційними лініями виявились: ‘Грація МИР’ (11,4%), ‘МІП Дніпрянка’ (12,3%), ‘Еритроспермум 55023’ (12,3%), ‘Лютесценс 55198’ (11,4%), ‘Лютесценс 37519’ (12,3%) та ‘Лютесценс 60049’ (12,8%). За показником склоподібності зерна протягом першого строку сівби можна виділити: ‘Балада МИР’ (86,7%), ‘МІП Лада’ (89,3%), ‘МІП Дніпрянка’ (87,3%), ‘Еритроспермум 55023’ (86,3%), ‘Лютесценс 55198’ (94,3%) та ‘Лютесценс 37519’ (91,0%). За вмістом сирої клейковини виокремлено сорт ‘Грація МИР’ (26,2%). У всіх досліджуваних селекційних ліній значення показника вмісту сирої клейковини варіювалося від 26,0 до 29,9%. Протягом другого строку сівби вищий відсоток вмісту сирої клейковини відмічено у сортів ‘Грація МИР’ (29,9%) та ‘МІП Дніпрянка’ (27,4%) і селекційних ліній ‘Еритроспермум 55023’ (28,4%), ‘Лютесценс 55198’ (27,4%), ‘Лютесценс 37519’ (27,1%) і ‘Лютесценс 60049’ (29,1%).Висновки. Впродовж трьох років спостережень погодні умови відрізнялися за кількістю опадів та сумою активних температур як у період вегетації, так і в період цвітіння – достигання, що суттєво вплинуло на результати аналізу якісних показників зерна сортів та перспективних ліній пшениці озимої. Проаналізувавши отримані результати, можна виділити сорти ‘Грація МИР’ і ‘МІП Дніпрянка’, а також селекційні лінії ‘ЕР 55023’, ‘ЛЮТ 55198’, ‘ЛЮТ 37519’ і ‘ЛЮТ 60049’, що перевищували сорт-стандарт ‘Подолянка’ та середнє значення по досліду за такими основними показниками, як вміст білка та клейковини, склоподібність і маса 1000 насінин

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimate that nearly 900 million people on the planet are suffering from chronic hunger. This state of affairs led to the making of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in 2000, having the first goal to “Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” with a target to halve the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. However, projections of a rapidly growing population, coupled with global climate change, is expected to have significant negative impacts on food security. To investigate this prospect, a modelling framework was developed under the QUEST-GSI programme, which we have termed FEEDME (Food Estimation and Export for Diet and Malnutrition Evaluation). The model uses country-level Food Balance Sheets (FBS) to determine mean calories on a per-capita basis, and a coefficient of variation to account for the degree of inequality in access to food across national populations. Calorific values of individual food items in the FBS of countries were modified by revision of crop yields and population changes under the SRES A1B climate change and social-economic scenarios respectively for 2050, 2085 and 2100. Under a no-climate change scenario, based upon projected changes in population and agricultural land use only, results show that 31 % (2.5 billion people by 2050) of the global population is at risk of undernourishment if no adaptation or agricultural innovation is made in the intervening years. An additional 21 % (1.7 billion people) is at risk of undernourishment by 2050 when climate change is taken into account. However, the model does not account for future trends in technology, improved crop varieties or agricultural trade interventions, although it is clear that all of these adaptation strategies will need to be embraced on a global scale if society is to ensure adequate food supplies for a projected global population of greater than 9 billion people.
