Source and distribution characteristics of 239, 240, 241Pu, 237Np and 134, 137Cs in sediments in the Northwest and Central Equatorial Pacific after the Fukushima nuclear accident Полный текст

To understand the possible influence of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on the deep sea, as well as the geochemical behavior and transport of radionuclides, ¹³⁴Cs, ¹³⁷Cs, ²³⁹, ²⁴⁰Pu, ²⁴¹Pu, and ²³⁷Np were measured in the abyssal sediments of the Northwest Pacific (NWP) and Central Equatorial Pacific (CEP) Ocean. Data on the characteristics of these sediments obtained after the FDNPP accident are extremely rare, especially in the NWP subtropical gyre (NPSG) region. FDNPP-derived radio-Cs (¹³⁴Cs, ¹³⁷Cs) arrived at the open sea floor of the NWP before 2018 but was only found in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension (KOE) region. No FDNPP-derived Pu was detected in the abyssal sediments of the NWP or CEP. Pu in the NWP mainly originated from global fallout and the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG) close-in fallout, except for at station WP1 (39°N in the KOE region), where an abnormal but non-FDNPP-derived Pu signal was detected. Pu in the eastern CEP sediment was less affected by the PPG close-in fallout from the Marshall Islands and was mainly derived from global fallout, with some close-in fallout from the Johnston Atoll test. The KOE region was the area most affected by PPG close-in fallout Pu via Kuroshio transport, while the lowest inventories of ²³⁹⁺²⁴⁰Pu and ²³⁷Np were found in the NPSG region due to its oligotrophic environment. The ²³⁷Np originated from the same source as Pu, and the latitudinal pattern of ²³⁷Np was consistent with that of Pu. Station SS (in the marginal sea of the NWP) contained high ²³⁷Np/²³⁹Pu atom ratios in the deeper layers of sediment and had a ²³⁷Np depth profile opposite that of the ²³⁹⁺²⁴⁰Pu profile, compared to other stations; these differences are mainly attributed to differences in the behaviors of ²³⁷Np and ²³⁹Pu.

Transfer parameters are key inputs for modeling radionuclide transfer in the environment and estimating risk to humans and wildlife. However, there are no data for many radionuclide-foodstuff/wildlife species combinations. The use of parameters derived from stable element data when data for radionuclides are lacking is increasingly common. But, do radionuclides and stable elements behave in a sufficiently similar way in the environment? To answer this question, at least for soil to plant transfer, sampling was conducted in four different countries (England, Kazakhstan, Spain and Ukraine) affected by different anthropogenic radionuclide source terms (in chronological order: global fallout, Semipalatinsk Test Site, the 1957 Windscale accident and the 1986 Chernobyl accident) together with a bibliographical review. Soil to grass transfer parameters (ratio between dry matter concentrations in plant and soil), Fᵥ, for ¹³⁷Cs and ⁹⁰Sr were significantly higher than those for stable elements, suggesting that the use of the latter could lead to underestimating radionuclide concentrations in plant samples Transfer parameters for ¹³⁷Cs and stable Cs were linearly correlated, with a slope of 1.54. No such correlation was observed for ⁹⁰Sr and stable Sr, the mean value of the ⁹⁰Sr:Sr ratio was 35 ranging (0.33–126); few data were available for the Sr comparison. The use of radionuclide transfer parameters, whenever possible, is recommended over derivation from stable element concentrations. However, we acknowledge that for many radionuclides there will be few or no radionuclide data from environmental studies. From analyses of the data collated there is evidence of a decreasing trend in the Fᵥ(¹³⁷Cs)/Fᵥ(Cs) ratio with time from the Chernobyl accident.

The growing use of coastal areas for different economic purposes is responsible for increasing pollution by hydrocarbons in marine environments. As a consequence of these activities, accidents during fuel extraction, transport, and storage can occur, causing intense environmental degradation. Numerical modeling of the trajectory of oil stains becomes an important tool with low operational costs, providing powerful support to the government agencies in charge of risk management associated with possible oil accidents, by helping to generate scenarios and strategies for containment and cleaning of affected environments. In this sense, the aim of this study is to estimate environmental vulnerability to oil at beaches located in the Itapuã State Park (PEI), a Protection Conservation Unit. This work focused on describing a methodology to estimate the vulnerability of coastal areas, with emphasis on the fact that the study was carried out in a closed environment. For that, an approach was used based on the integration of: (1) an intrinsic variable to the environment; (2) a dynamic variable determined through diesel oil surface dispersion scenarios. Four hypothetical accident scenarios with 20 m³ of diesel oil were simulated in 2018, during five days of simulations with instant dumping in the navigation channel of the local waterway near the PEI. The results suggest the forcing of the field of intensity and direction of the local winds as preponderant for the dynamics of movement and structure of the spots, with the zonal and meridional components of the fields of superficial currents acting in this process as a secondary factor. The study showed that all beaches in the park are susceptible to contact with oil throughout the simulated year, with Pombas Beach, Pedreira Beach, and Onça Beach being affected in all simulated scenarios, which classifies them as very high vulnerability and defines them as priority protection areas.

Human factors/errors (such as inappropriate actions by operators and unsafe supervision by organizations) are a primary cause of oil spill incidents. To investigate the influences of active operational failures and unsafe latent factors in offshore oil spill accidents, an integrated human factor analysis and decision support process has been developed. The system is comprised of a Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) framework to qualitatively evaluate the influence of various factors and errors associated with the multiple operational stages considered for oil spill preparedness and response (e.g., oil spill occurrence, spill monitoring, decision making/contingency planning, and spill response); coupled with quantitative data analysis by Fuzzy Set Theory and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (Fuzzy-TOPSIS) to enhance decision making during response operations. The efficiency of the integrated human factor analysis and decision support system is tested with data from a case study to generate a comprehensive priority rank, a robust sensitivity analysis, and other theoretical/practical insights. The proposed approach improves our knowledge on the significance of human factors/errors on oil spill accidents and response operations; and provides an improved support tool for decision making.

Trace elements can be toxic when they cannot be easily removed after entering an ecosystem, so a long-term assessment is fundamental to guide ecosystem restoration after catastrophic pollution. In 1998, a pyrite mining accident in Aznalcóllar (south-western Spain) spilled toxic waste over a large area of the Guadiamar river basin, where, after restoration tasks, the Guadiamar Green Corridor was established. Eight years after the mine accident (2005–2006), the ground-dwelling insectivorous lizard Psammodromus algirus registered high trace-element levels within the study area compared to specimens from a nearby unpolluted control site. In 2017, 20 years after the accident, we repeated the sampling for this lizard species and also quantified trace elements in vegetation as well as in arthropod samples in order to identify remnant trace-element accumulation with the aim of assessing the transfer of these elements through the trophic web. We found remnant trace-element contamination in organisms of the polluted site compared to those from the unpolluted site. All trace-element concentrations were higher in arthropods than in plants, suggesting these compounds bioaccumulate through the trophic web. Lizards from the polluted areas had higher As, Cd, and Hg concentrations than did individuals from the unpolluted area. Lizard abundance between sampling periods (2005–06 and 2017) did not vary in unpolluted transects but strongly declined at polluted ones. By contrast, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index indicated that in the study period, the vegetation was similar at the two sampling sites. These results suggest that, 20 years after the accident, the trace-element pollution could be the cause of a severe demographic decline of the lizard in the polluted area.

Following nine years since the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant Acciden (FDNPPA), it might be the time to draw a much clearer conclusion for the impact of FDNPPA on marine biota. In this work, the evolution of the FDNPPA derived ¹³⁴Cs, ¹³⁷Cs and ¹¹⁰ᵐAg in the neon flying squids in the Northwest Pacific from 2011 to 2018 were studied. The background level of ¹³⁷Cs in neon flying squids (<0.10 Bq/kgfᵣₑₛₕ wₑᵢgₕₜ with the average of 0.017 Bq/kgfᵣₑₛₕ wₑᵢgₕₜ) before FDNPPA were estimated. The radioactive levels of ¹³⁴Cs, ¹³⁷Cs and ¹¹⁰ᵐAg in neon flying squids decreased with time. ¹³⁴Cs and ¹¹⁰ᵐAg decreased at the half-lives of 7.6 months and 5.7 months at the population level, respectively. After May 2014, ¹³⁴Cs and ¹¹⁰ᵐAg cannot be detected and ¹³⁷Cs activities returned to the background level before FDNPPA. BCFs of cesium isotopes (3.7–17.7 with the average of 10.8) and ¹¹⁰ᵐAg (∼7 × 10⁴) for neon flying squids were estimated. The amount of ¹¹⁰ᵐAg released into the Northwest Pacific (∼20-∼26 TBq) were firstly calculated using a ¹³⁴Cs/¹¹⁰ᵐAgₐcₜᵢᵥᵢₜy ᵣₐₜᵢₒ method. Radiation dose assessment demonstrated that it was far from causing radiation harm to neon flying squids in the open ocean of Northwest Pacific and humans who ingested these neon flying squids.

Radioactive contamination of the natural areas is one of the most long-lasting anthropogenic impacts on the environment. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a promising organism for radiation-related research because of its high radiosensitivity, but the genome size of Pinacea species has imposed obstacles for high-throughput studies so far. In this work, we conducted the analysis of the de novo assembled transcriptome of Scots pine populations growing in the Chernobyl-affected zone, which is still today contaminated with radionuclides because of the accident at the nuclear power plant in 1986. The transcriptome profiles indicate a clear pattern of adaptive stress response, which seems to be dose-dependent. The transcriptional response indicates a continuous modulation of the cellular redox system, enhanced expression of chaperones and histones, along with the control of ions balance. Interestingly, the activity of transposable element families is inversely correlated to the exposure levels to radiation. These adaptive responses, which are triggered by radiation doses 30 times lower than the one accepted as a safe for biota species by international regulations, suggest that the environmental management in radiation protection should be reviewed.

Three soil core samples were collected from a forest located about 1.1 km south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) boundary in 2017, and the vertical profiles of 129I from the FDNPP accident were determined by the combination of TMAH (tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide) extraction and ICP-MS/MS analysis. The humus layer above the soil layer was heavily contaminated with 134Cs (1983–5985 Bq g−1) and 137Cs (1947–5902 Bq g−1) (decay-corrected to March 11, 2011). The 129I activity concentrations decreased sharply with the soil depth, from 1894 to 34.1, from 9384 to 78.9, and from 2536 to 51.3 mBq kg−1, for the three sites. Downward migration of 129I was slightly faster than the one of 134Cs. In addition, the cumulative 129I inventories were observed to be 43.4 ± 1.0, 71.7 ± 1.8, and 56.5 ± 1.8 Bq m−2, respectively. Subsequently, the cumulative 131I inventories were estimated to be 1.76 ± 0.06, 2.90 ± 0.11, and 2.28 ± 0.10 GBq m−2 (decay-corrected to March 11, 2011), respectively. Finally, the total atmospheric deposition of 129I on the land of Japan due to the FDNPP accident was estimated to be around 1.09–1.71 kg (7.11–11.2 GBq).

The tidal flats near Sinduri beach in Taean, Korea, have been severely contaminated by heavy crude oils due to the Korea's worst oil spill accident, say the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill, in 2007. Crude oil compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pose significant environmental damages due to their wide distribution, persistence, high toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. Microbial community of Sinduri beach sediments samples was analyzed by metagenomic data with 16S rRNA gene amplicons. Three phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes) accounted for approximately ≥93.0% of the total phyla based on metagenomic analysis. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in Sinduri beach sediments. Cultivable bacteria were isolated from PAH-enriched cultures, and bacterial diversity was investigated through performing culture characterization followed by molecular biology methods. Sixty-seven isolates were obtained, comprising representatives of Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, α- and γ-Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. PAH catabolism genes, such as naphthalene dioxygenase (NDO) and aromatic ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (ARHDO), were used as genetic markers to assess biodegradation of PAHs in the cultivable bacteria. The ability to degrade PAHs was demonstrated by monitoring the removal of PAHs using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer. Overall, various PAH-degrading bacteria were widely present in Sinduri beach sediments and generally reflected the restored microbial community. Among them, Cobetia marina, Rhodococcus soli, and Pseudoalteromonas agarivorans were found to be significant in degradation of PAHs. This large collection of PAH-degrading strains represents a valuable resource for studies investigating mechanisms of PAH degradation and bioremediation in oil contaminated coastal environment, elsewhere.

The clean-up effort that is occurring across the region affected by the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident is unprecedented in its magnitude as well as the financial cost that will eventually result. A major component of this remediation is the stripping of large volumes of material from the land surface, depositing this into large waste storage bags before placing these 1 cubic meter bags into specially constructed stores across Fukushima Prefecture.In this work, using an unmanned aerial vehicle to perform radiological surveys of a site, the time-resolved distribution of contamination during the construction of one of these waste storage sites was assessed. The results indicated that radioactive material was progressively leaching from the store into the surrounding environment. A subsequent survey of the site conducted eight months later revealed that in response to this survey and remedial actions, the contamination issue once existing on this site had been successfully resolved. Such results highlight the potential of low-altitude unmanned aerial systems to easily and rapidly assess site-wide changes over time – providing highly-visual results; therefore, permitting for prompt remedial actions to be undertaken as required.Use of UAV radiation mapping and airborne photogrammetry to produce a time-resolved assessment of remediation efforts within a Fukushima temporary storage facility.
