A new exploration of health risk assessment quantification from sources of soil heavy metals under different land use Полный текст

Heavy metals in the topsoil affected adversely human health through inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact. The health risk assessment, which are quantified from soil heavy metals sources under different land use, can provide an important reference basis for preventing and controlling the soil heavy metals pollution from the source. In this study, simple statistical analysis and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) were used to quantify sources of soil heavy metals; then a health risk assessment (HRA) model combined with PMF was proposed to assess quantificationally the human health risk (including non-cancer risk and cancer risk) from sources under residential-land, forest-land and farm land. Xiang River New District (XRNQ) was chosen as the example and four significant sources were quantitatively analyzed in the study. For cancer risk, industrial discharge was the largest source and accounted for about 69.6%, 69.7%, 56.5% for adults under residential-land, forest-land and farm-land, respectively. For non-cancer risk, industrial discharge was still the largest significant source under residential-land and forest-land and accounted for about 41.7%, 39.2% for adult, respectively; while agricultural activities accounted for about 51.8% for adult under farm-land. The risk trend of children, including cancer risk and non-cancer risk, was similar with adults. However, the non-cancer risk areas of adults affected by industrial discharge was higher than that of children, while the cancer risk areas of adults were on the contrary. The new exploration was useful to assess health risk quantification from sources under different land use, thus providing certain reference in preventing and controlling the pollution from the source for local authorities effectively.

The potential leakage from marine CO2 storage sites is of increasing concern, but few studies have evaluated the probable adverse effects on marine organisms. Fish, one of the top predators in marine environments, should be an essential representative species used for water column toxicity testing in response to waterborne CO2 exposure. In the present study, we conducted fish life cycle toxicity tests to fully elucidate CO2 toxicity mechanism effects. We tested sub-lethal and lethal toxicities of elevated CO2 concentrations on marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) at different developmental stages. At each developmental stage, the test species was exposed to varying concentrations of gaseous CO2 (control air, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30%), with 96 h of exposure at 0–4 d (early stage), 4–8 d (middle stage), and 8–12 d (late stage). Sub-lethal and lethal effects, including early developmental delays, cardiac edema, tail abnormalities, abnormal pigmentation, and mortality were monitored daily during the 14 d exposure period. At the embryonic stage, significant sub-lethal and lethal effects were observed at pH < 6.30. Hypercapnia can cause long-term and/or delayed developmental embryonic problems, even after transfer back to clean seawater. At fish juvenile and adult stages, significant mortality was observed at pH < 5.70, indicating elevated CO2 exposure might cause various adverse effects, even during short-term exposure periods. It should be noted the early embryonic stage was found more sensitive to CO2 exposure than other developmental stages of the fish life cycle. Overall, the present study provided baseline information for potential adverse effects of high CO2 concentration exposure on fish developmental processes at different life cycle stages in marine ecosystems.

Foodstuffs may be contaminated by organophosphate esters (OPEs) and become an important source of human exposure since OPEs are ubiquitous in the environment. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in various food matrices collected from a city in Eastern China including chicken, pork, fishes, vegetables, tofu, eggs, milk and cereals. The concentrations of Σ₁₀OPEs ranged from 1.1 to 9.6 ng g⁻¹ fresh weight (fw) in the foodstuffs. Cereals had the highest residual level of total OPEs with a mean value of 5.7 ng g⁻¹ fw. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate was detected in all foodstuff samples and showed the highest median residual concentration of 1.3 ng g⁻¹ fw among the OPE analogs. The daily dietary intake of OPEs was calculated as 3.6 and 2.4 μg d⁻¹ for adults and children. Cereals were identified as the major contributor to the total OPEs among different types of foodstuffs. Preliminary exposure assessment revealed that the current non-cancer health risks of OPEs via dietary intake were in the range of 10⁻⁵-10⁻³, indicating low risk levels. Moreover, the hazard index of OPEs indicated that the risk for children (3 × 10⁻³) was higher than adults (2 × 10⁻³).

Despite the efforts of the European Commission to implement measures that offset the detrimental effects of agricultural intensification, farmland bird populations continue to decline. Pesticide use has been pointed out as a major cause of decline, with growing concern about those agro-chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors. We report here on the effects of flutriafol, a ubiquitous systemic fungicide used for cereal seed treatment, on the physiology and reproduction of a declining gamebird. Captive red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa; n = 11–13 pairs per treatment) were fed wheat treated with 0%, 20% or 100% of the flutriafol application rate during 25 days in late winter. We studied treatment effects on the reproductive performance, carotenoid-based coloration and cellular immune responsiveness of adult partridges, and their relationship with changes in oxidative stress biomarkers and plasma biochemistry. We also studied the effect of parental exposure on egg antioxidant content and on the survival, growth and cellular immune response of offspring. Exposed partridges experienced physiological effects (reduced levels of cholesterol and triglycerides), phenotypical effects (a reduction in the carotenoid-based pigmentation of their eye rings), and most importantly, severe adverse effects on reproduction: a reduced clutch size and fertile egg ratio, and an overall offspring production reduced by more than 50%. No effects on body condition or cellular immune response of either exposed adult or their surviving offspring were observed. These results, together with previous data on field exposure in wild partridges, demonstrate that seed treatment with flutriafol represents a risk for granivorous birds; they also highlight a need to improve the current regulation system used for foreseeing and preventing negative impacts of Plant Protection Products on wildlife.

Waterborne microcystin-LR (MC-LR) has been reported to disrupt sex hormones, while its estrogenic potency remains controversial. We hypothesized that MC-LR could induce estrogenic effects via disrupting sex hormone synthesis, and verified this hypothesis by in vitro and in vivo assays. Effects of MC-LR (1, 10, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 μg/L) on steroidogenesis were assessed in the H295R cells after 48 h. The contents of 17β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) increased in a non-dose-dependent manner, which showed positive correlations with the expression of steroidogenic genes. In the in vivo assay, adult male zebrafish were exposed to 0.3, 1, 3, 10 and 30 μg/L MC-LR for 30 d. Similarly, E2 and T contents in the testis were increased, accompanied by extensive up-regulation of steroidogenic genes, especially cyp19a. Meanwhile, the percentage of spermatid in the testis declined. In the liver, the vtg1 gene was significantly up-regulated while both the transcriptional and protein levels of the estrogenic receptor (ER) declined. These results indicate that MC-LR induced non-dose-dependent estrogenic effects at environmental concentrations, which may result from steroidogenesis stimulation via a non-ER-mediated pathway. Our findings support a paradigm shift in the risk assessment of MC-LR from traditional toxicity to estrogenic risk, particularly at low concentrations, and emphasize the potential threat to the male reproductive capacity of wildlife in bloom areas.

Adult coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) prematurely die when they return from the ocean to spawn in urban watersheds throughout northwestern North America. The available evidence suggests the annual mortality events are caused by toxic stormwater runoff. The underlying pathophysiology of the urban spawner mortality syndrome is not known, and it is unclear whether closely related species of Pacific salmon are similarly at risk. The present study co-exposed adult coho and chum (O. keta) salmon to runoff from a high traffic volume urban arterial roadway. The spawners were monitored for the familiar symptoms of the mortality syndrome, including surface swimming, loss of orientation, and loss of equilibrium. Moreover, the hematology of both species was profiled by measuring arterial pH, blood gases, lactate, plasma electrolytes, hematocrit, and glucose. Adult coho developed behavioral symptoms within a few hours of exposure to stormwater. Various measured hematological parameters were significantly altered compared to coho controls, indicating a blood acidosis and ionoregulatory disturbance. By contrast, runoff-exposed chum spawners showed essentially no indications of the mortality syndrome, and measured blood hematological parameters were similar to unexposed chum controls. We conclude that contaminant(s) in urban runoff are the likely cause of the disruption of ion balance and pH in coho but not chum salmon. Among the thousands of chemicals in stormwater, future forensic analyses should focus on the gill or cardiovascular system of coho salmon. Because of their distinctive sensitivity to urban runoff, adult coho remain an important vertebrate indicator species for degraded water quality in freshwater habitats under pressure from human population growth and urbanization.

Microplastics are a widespread environmental pollutant in aquatic ecosystems and have the potential to eventually sink to the sediment, where they may pose a risk to sediment-dwelling organisms. While the impacts of exposure to microplastics have been widely reported for marine biota, the effects of microplastics on freshwater organisms at environmentally realistic concentrations are largely unknown, especially for benthic organisms. Here we examined the effects of a realistic concentration of polyethylene microplastics in sediment on the growth and emergence of a freshwater organism Chironomus tepperi. We also assessed the influence of microplastic size by exposing C. tepperi larvae to four different size ranges of polyethylene microplastics (1–4, 10–27, 43–54 and 100–126 μm). Exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of microplastics, 500 particles/kgsediment, negatively affected the survival, growth (i.e. body length and head capsule) and emergence of C. tepperi. The observed effects were strongly dependent on microplastic size with exposure to particles in the size range of 10–27 μm inducing more pronounced effects. While growth and survival of C. tepperi were not affected by the larger microplastics (100–126 μm), a significant reduction in the number of emerged adults was observed after exposure to the largest microplastics, with the delayed emergence attributed to exposure to a stressor. While scanning electron microscopy showed a significant reduction in the size of the head capsule and antenna of C. tepperi exposed to microplastics in the 10–27 μm size range, no deformities to the external structure of the antenna and mouth parts in organisms exposed to the same size range of microplastics were observed. These results indicate that environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastics in sediment induce harmful effects on the development and emergence of C. tepperi, with effects greatly dependent on particle size.

The concentration distributions, compositional profiles and seasonal variations of 17 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in PM₁₀ (particles with aerodynamic diameters < 10 μm) were determined in seven coastal cities of the Bohai and Yellow Seas. The detection rates of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and short-chain components (perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with ≤7 carbon atoms and perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids (PFSAs) with ≤5 carbon atoms) were much higher than those of other long-chain PFAA species. The annual average concentration of total PFAAs in PM₁₀ ranged from 23.6 pg/m³ to 94.5 pg/m³ for the sampling cities. The monthly mean concentrations of PFAAs in PM₁₀ in some sampling cities reached a peak value in winter, while no significant seasonal differences presented in other cities. High concentrations of PFAAs in the northern cities generally occurred during the local heating period (from November to March). Generally, the dominant components of PFAAs were PFOA and perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA). Some significantly positive correlations (p < 0.01) between the 10 dominant components were revealed in the sampling cities, which implied similar sources and fate behaviors. Based on the simulated 72-hr backward trajectory tracking of air masses, the clustering results demonstrated the sampling cities were affected mainly by the atmospheric transport in sequence from the northwest, the southwest and the open seas, and many transport trajectories of air masses passed by the local fluorine chemical manufacturers in Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Hubei Provinces. The estimated average daily intake (ADI) corresponding to the residents in different age groups indicated insignificant contributions to PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposures by inhalation of PM₁₀ compared to ingestion by daily diet, while the higher ADI of PFOA than the reported levels for adults should be a concern. The calculated hazard ratios (HR) exhibited low noncancer risks by inhalation exposure to PFOA and PFOS in PM₁₀.

The gulf of Annaba, the most important touristic and economic coastal zone located in Northeast Algeria, is contaminated by several pollutants from urban, agricultural, harbor and industrial activities. Elevated levels of heavy metals were detected in a locally prevalent edible mollusk Donax trunculus (Bivalvia, Donacidae) widely used as a sentinel species for the assessment of marine pollution. The present work aims to measure the difference between two localities, one being full of different pollutants (Sidi Salem) and the other being relatively clean (El Battah) and to evaluate the ability of D. trunculus to overcome the environmental stress during a transplantation experiment by a determination of fatty acid profile, the enzymes activities and the level of metallothioneins (MTs), a biomarker of metallic contamination. Adults of D. trunculus were collected at Sidi Salem (contaminated site) and transplanted into El Battah (reference site) for 21 days in cages (60 × 60 × 60 cm with a 2 mm mesh). Biochemical analyzes were conducted at different times (0, 7, 14 and 21 days). At 0-day experiment: the rate of the fatty acids, the enzymes activities and MT levels at the site of Sidi Salem (polluted site) were significantly different from those of El Battah. During the transplantation a gradual restoration of fatty acids rates, enzymes activities and MT levels was observed. At the end of the period of transplantation, the values are comparable to those of El Battah. A two-way ANOVA (time, site) on data revealed significant effects of time and site. Overally, D. trunculus is able to induce its detoxification system and to restore relatively rapidly the status of individuals from the reference site (El Battah).

The distribution, feeding ecology and microplastic contamination were assessed in different ontogenetic phases of Haemulidae species inhabiting the Goiana Estuary, over a seasonal cycle. Pomadasys ramosus and Haemulopsis corvinaeformis are estuarine dependent species that use habitats with specific environmental conditions each season. Pomadasys ramosus was found in the upper and middle estuaries during the rainy season, when salinity showed the lowest values. Haemulopsis corvinaeformis was found in the lower estuary during the dry season, when salinity increased in the estuary. Juveniles of P. ramosus are zooplanktivores, feeding mainly on calanoid copepods. Sub-adults and adults are zoobenthivores, feeding on invertebrates associated to the bottom, mainly Polychaeta. Juveniles of H. corvinaeformis were not found in the main channel, but sub-adults and adults showed a zoobenthivore habit, feeding mainly on Anomalocardia flexuosa (Mollusca: Bivalvia). Dietary shifts along the life cycle and the spatio-temporal relationship between their distribution and the availability of microplastics along the estuary seem to have a strong influence in the ingestion of microfilaments. The highest average ingestion of microfilaments by P. ramosus coincided with the peak of ingestion of Polychaeta by sub-adults in the upper estuary during the late rainy season. For H. corvinaeformis the highest ingestion of microfilaments coincided with the peak of ingestion of A. flexuosa by adults in the lower estuary during the late dry season. Such contamination might be attributed to the time when these phases shifted to a more diverse diet and began to forage on benthic invertebrates. Research on microplastic contamination must consider species-specific behaviour, since the intake of microplastics is dependent on patterns of distribution and trophic guild within fish assemblages.
