With increasing demand for recycled wastewater for irrigation purposes, there is a need to evaluate the potential for manufactured nanomaterials in waste water to impact crop production and agroecosystems. Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have previously been shown to negatively impact the growth of duckweed (Landoltia punctata) a model aquatic plant consumed by water fowl and widely found in agricultural runoff ditches in temperate climates. However, prior studies involving CuO NP toxicity to duckweed have focused on systems without the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM). In the current study, duckweed growth inhibition was shown to be a function of aqueous Cu²⁺ concentration. Growth inhibition was greatest from aqueous CuCl₂ and, for particles, increased with decreasing CuO particle size. The dissolution of CuO NPs in ½ Hoagland's solution was measured to increase with decreasing particle size and in the presence of Suwannee river humic and fulvic acids (HA; FA). However, the current results suggest that HA, and to a lesser extent, FA, decrease the toxicity of both CuO NPs and free ionized Cu to duckweed, likely by inhibiting Cu availability through Cu-DOM complex formation. Such results are consistent with changes to Cu speciation as predicted by speciation modeling software and suggest that DOM changes Cu speciation and therefore toxicity in natural systems.

The rootless duckweed Wolffia globosa can accumulate and tolerate relatively large amounts of arsenic (As); however, the underlying mechanisms were unknown. W. globosa was exposed to different concentrations of arsenate with or without l-buthionine sulphoximine (BSO), a specific inhibitor of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase. Free thiol compounds and As(III)–thiol complexes were identified and quantified using HPLC – high resolution ICP-MS – accurate mass ESI-MS. Without BSO, 74% of the As accumulated in the duckweed was complexed with phytochelatins (PCs), with As(III)–PC₄ and As(III)–PC₃ being the main species. BSO was taken up by the duckweed and partly deaminated. The BSO treatment completely suppressed the synthesis of PCs and the formation of As(III)–PC complexes, and also inhibited the reduction of arsenate to arsenite. BSO markedly decreased both As accumulation and As tolerance in W. globosa. The results demonstrate an important role of PCs in detoxifying As and enabling As accumulation in W. globosa.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) promote cyanobacteria dominating eutrophicated waters, with aquatic plant decrease and even disappearance. To uncover the toxic mechanism of cyanobacterial VOCs on aquatic plants, we investigated the growth, photosynthetic pigment levels, photosynthetic abilities and related gene expression in duckweed treated with β-cyclocitral and β-ionone, 2 main components in the VOCs. The levels of chlorophylls and carotenoids gradually declined with raising the concentration of the 2 compounds and prolonging the treatment time. Their decline should result from the down-regulation of 8 genes associated with photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis and up-regulation of 2 genes involved in carotenoid degradation. The reduction was also found in the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and O₂ evolution rate, which should result from the lowered photosynthetic pigment levels and down-regulation of 38 genes related with photosynthetic process. The frond numbers, total frond area and fresh weight gradually decreased with raising the 2 compound concentration, which may result from the lowered photosynthetic abilities as well as down-regulated expression of 7 genes associated with growth-promoting hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction. It can be speculated that cyanobacterial VOCs may poison aquatic plants by lowering the photosynthesis and growth through altering related gene expression.

The aquaculture industry is considered a key sector for the supply of high quality, nutritious food. However, growth of the aquaculture sector has been slow, particularly in Europe, and this is amongst others linked to concerns about environmental impacts of this industry. Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) has been identified as an important technology to sustainably improve freshwater fish production. In IMTA, economically valuable extractive species feed on waste produced by other species, remediating wastewater, and minimising the environmental impact of aquaculture. This study presents quantitative information on the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of a duckweed-based, pilot, semi-commercial IMTA system. Duckweed species are free-floating freshwater species belonging to the family of Lemnaceae. The aim of this study was to test the potential of duckweed-based IMTA under realistic environmental conditions. Three different approaches were used to assess remediation capacity; 1) assessment of water quality pre and post treatment with duckweed showed that the system can remove 0.78 and 0.38 T y⁻¹ of Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus (TP), respectively 2) based on nitrogen and phosphorus content of newly grown duckweed biomass, it was shown that 1.71 and 0.22 T y⁻¹ of TN and TP can be removed, respectively 3) extrapolation based on laboratory established nitrogen and phosphorus uptake rates determined that 0.88 and 0.08 T y⁻¹ of TN and TP can be removed by the system. There is substantive agreement between the three assessments, and the study confirms that duckweed can maintain good quality water in an IMTA system, while yielding high protein content (21.84 ± 2.45%) biomass. The quantitative data on nitrogen and phosphorus removal inform the design of further IMTA systems, and especially create a scientific basis to determine the balance between aquaculture and extractive species.

In this work, the ammonium-tolerant duckweed Landoltia punctata 0202 was used to study the effect of ammonium stress on carbon and nitrogen metabolism and elucidate the detoxification mechanism. The growth status, protein and starch content, and activity of nitrogen assimilation enzymes were determined, and the transcriptional levels of genes involved in ion transport and carbon and nitrogen metabolism were investigated. Under high ammonium stress, the duckweed growth was inhibited, especially when ammonium was the sole nitrogen source. Ammonium might mainly enter cells via low-affinity transporters. The stimulation of potassium transport genes suggested sufficient potassium acquisition, precluding cation deficiency. In addition, the up-regulation of ammonium assimilation and transamination indicated that excess ammonium could be incorporated into organic nitrogen. Furthermore, the starch content increased from 3.97% to 16.43% and 26.02% in the mixed-nitrogen and ammonium-nitrogen groups, respectively. And the up-regulated starch synthesis, degradation, and glycolysis processes indicated that the accumulated starch could provide sufficient carbon skeletons for excess ammonium assimilation. The findings of this study illustrated that the coordination of carbon and nitrogen metabolism played a vital role in the ammonium detoxification mechanism of duckweeds.

The purification of micro-polluted water for drinking water can play an important role in solving water crisis. To investigate the effects of spectral composition on nutrient removal and biofuel feedstock production using duckweed, Landoltia punctata was cultivated in different spectral compositions in micro-polluted water. Results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency were 99.4% and 93.5% at an recommended red and blue light photon intensity mixture ratio of 2:1. Meanwhile, maximum growth rate of duckweed (11.37 g/m²/day) was observed at red/blue = 2:1. In addition, maximum starch accumulation rate of duckweed was found to be 6.12 g/m²/day, with starch content of 36.63% at red/blue = 4:1, which was three times higher when compared to that of white light. Moreover, the recommended ratio of red and blue light was validated by economic efficiency analysis of energy consumptions. These findings provide a sustainable environmental restoration method to transform water micro-pollutants to available substances.

The intensive development of medical science has led to an increase in the availability and use of pharmaceutical products. However, nowadays, most of scientific attention has been paid to the native forms of pharmaceuticals, while the transformation products (TPs) of these substances, understood herein as metabolites, degradation products, and selected enantiomers, remain largely unexplored in terms of their characterization, presence, fate and effects within the natural environment. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of seven native compounds belonging to different therapeutic groups (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioid analgesics, beta-blockers, antibacterial and anti-epileptic drugs), along with the toxicity of their 13 most important TPs. For this purpose, an ecotoxicological test battery, consisting of five organisms of different biological organization was used. The obtained data shows that, in general, the toxicity of TPs to the tested organisms was similar or lower compared to their parent compounds. However, for example, significantly higher toxicity of the R form of ibuprofen to algae and duckweed, as well as a higher toxicity of the R form of naproxen to luminescent bacteria, was observed, proving that the risk associated with the presence of drug TPs in the environment should not be neglected.

In order to remove aqueous radionuclides and find an appropriate method for the disposal of wild duckweed in eutrophic water body, alkali-treated duckweed biomass and duckweed-based hydrothermal biochar (hydrochar) and pyrolytic biochars of 300 and 600 °C were prepared. Their physicochemical properties were characterized carefully. The adsorption isothermal data fitted well with the Langmuir model and the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacities were 104.1, 96.3, 86.7, and 63.5 mg/g for hydrochar, modified biomass, and 300 and 600 °C biochars, respectively. The adsorption kinetic data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The sorption data of fixed-bed column also confirmed the high efficient removal of Th(IV) and fitted well with the Thomas model. The duckweed-based hydrothermal biochar is a low-cost adsorbent for Th(IV) removal, and it is also a resource utilization technology of the duckweed collected from eutrophic water body.

Free-floating aquatic plants Pistia stratiotes and Eichhornia crassipes are well-known invasive species in the tropics and subtropics. The aim of this study was to utilize the plants as cost-effective and environmentally friendly oil sorbents. Multilevel wrinkle structure of P. stratiotes leaf (PL), rough surface of E. crassipes leaf (EL), and box structure of E. crassipes stalk (ES) were observed using the scanning electron microscope. The natural hydrophobic structures and capillary rise tests supported the idea to use P. stratiotes and E. crassipes as oil sorbents. Experiments indicated that the oil sorption by the plants was a fast process. The maximum sorption capacities for different oils reached 5.1–7.6, 3.1–4.8, and 10.6–11.7 g of oil per gram of sorbent for PL, EL, and ES, respectively. In the range of 5–35 °C, the sorption capacities of the plants were not significantly different. These results suggest that the plants can be used as efficient oil sorbents.
