Mechanistic insight into the adsorption of diclofenac by MIL-100: Experiments and theoretical calculations

The development of high-efficiency adsorbents and the exploration of their adsorption mechanisms are major challenges in environmental remediation. Herein, MIL-100 was prepared, characterized, and utilized for the adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) from aqueous solutions. A high monolayer adsorption capacity of 773 mg g⁻¹ was recorded. The adsorption mechanism was proposed based on different contributions of two types of pore structure of MIL-100 to the adsorption of DCF from aqueous solutions according to the experimental results and theoretical calculation. During adsorption process, DCF (5.2 × 7.4 × 10.3 Å) diffused through the free area of hexagonal pores (8.6 × 8.6 Å) into the cages of MIL-100, whilst it was adsorbed by the pentagonal pores (4.8 × 5.8 Å) preferentially. Internal mass transfer resistance, which was identified as one of the dominant rate-limiting steps by the mass transfer resistance kinetic models based on the Sips model, will be derived from the diffusion process, which was affected by the size-sieving effect of the pore structure of MIL-100. The successful diffusion of DCF into the interior of MIL-100 and the stable configuration between MIL-100 and DCF accounted for the high adsorption capacity. The capture of DCF into MIL-100 also resulted in the pore size distribution variation of adsorbent, which provided vital experimental evidence for the proposed mechanism. This study may offer deeper insights into other pollutants removal by metal-organic frameworks type adsorbents.

Crested ibis (Nipponia nippon), one of the rarest birds in the world, was almost extinct in the historically widespread areas partly due to the environmental pollution. Therefore, non-invasive indicators of feather, eggshell, and excrement were used to investigate the exposure of this endangered bird to eleven trace elements in this study. The results indicated that crested ibises under in situ and ex situ conservations were diversely exposed to trace elements, with higher exposure levels of As, Cd, and Mn in the wild, but higher exposure levels of Hg, Se, and Zn in the captive breeding center. In addition, concentrations of As, Co, Cr, and Ni were significantly greater in the sediments of three types of foraging habitats for wild crested ibis, but concentration of Se was greater in the soil of captive cages. Feather and eggshell of crested ibis exhibited a very consistent indication for most of the trace elements, and concentrations of almost all of the elements in the excrements were very consistent with the results in the environmental samples (sediments or soils). Concentrations of As, Hg, Mn, and Zn in feathers, and Mn and Zn in eggshells of wild and captive crested ibis were greater than those in other similar species. Moreover, As, Cd, Cu, and Mn concentrations in excrement of wild crested ibises were greater than that in captive individuals and other species, but Se and Zn concentrations in excrement of captive crested ibises were greater than that of the wild and other species. The present study provided evidence that both of the wild and captive crested ibis were exposed to trace elements, which may be harmful to their health.

Fullerenes are carbon based nanoparticles that may enter the environment as a consequence of both natural processes and human activities. Although little is known about the presence of these chemicals in the environment, recent studies suggested that soil may act as a sink. The aim of the present work was to investigate the presence of fullerenes in soils collected in The Netherlands. Samples (n = 91) were taken from 6 locations and analyzed using a new developed LC-QTOF-MS method. The locations included highly trafficked and industrialized as well as urban and natural areas. In general, C60 was the most abundant fullerene found in the environment, detected in almost a half of the samples and at concentrations in the range of ng/kg. Other fullerenes such as C70 and an unknown structure containing a C60 cage were detected to a lower extent. The highest concentrations were found in the proximity of combustion sites such as a coal power plant and an incinerator, suggesting that the nanoparticles were unintentionally produced during combustions processes and reached the soil through atmospheric deposition. Consistent with other recent studies, these results show that fullerenes are widely present in the environment and that the main route for their entrance may be due to human activities. These data will be helpful in the understanding of the distribution of fullerenes in the environment and for the study of their behavior and fate in soil.

The use, environmental fate and ecological risks of antibiotics applied in tilapia cage farming were investigated in the Tha Chin and Mun rivers in Thailand. Information on antibiotic use was collected through interviewing 29 farmers, and the concentrations of the most commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and enrofloxacin (ENR), were monitored in river water and sediment samples. Moreover, we assessed the toxicity of OTC and ENR on tropical freshwater invertebrates and performed a risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems. All interviewed tilapia farmers reported to routinely use antibiotics. Peak water concentrations for OTC and ENR were 49 and 1.6 μg/L, respectively. Antibiotics were most frequently detected in sediments with concentrations up to 6908 μg/kg d.w. for OTC, and 2339 μg/kg d.w. for ENR. The results of this study indicate insignificant short-term risks for primary producers and invertebrates, but suggest that the studied aquaculture farms constitute an important source of antibiotic pollution.

The Keban Reservoir, which is the second man-made waterbody in Turkey, has the biggest rainbow trout production in the country. In this study, the impacts of rainbow trout farms on water and sediment chemistry were investigated. Water and sediment samples were taken at distances of 0, 10, 25, 50 and 100 m from the edge of the cages at the three fish farms, and at the respective reference stations. Samples were also taken at 0 m stations and reference stations in the late August when there were no fish in the cages. Physico-chemical variables and trace metals were analysed in all samples. Due to likely high dilution rates and recycling processes in the water column of the reservoir, little changes in the water quality parameters associated with wastes of the fish farms were noticed. When compared with those in the sediment samples at the stations near the edge of cages, the lower concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), organic matter (OM), total carbon (TC), sulfide (S2−), arsenic (As), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), and higher values of redox potential (Eh) were found at the reference stations. According to organic enrichment classification based on S2− and Eh values, sediments of the three fish farms in the period when there were fish in the cages fell into the oxic category, whereas sediments in the August (no fish farming activity) fell into the normal category. Also, it was found in the August that most of sediment quality parameters at the 0 m stations had close values to those at the reference stations. These results revealed that a three-month period when there were no fish in the cages allows for sediments to return to reference station conditions.

The gulf of Annaba, the most important touristic and economic coastal zone located in Northeast Algeria, is contaminated by several pollutants from urban, agricultural, harbor and industrial activities. Elevated levels of heavy metals were detected in a locally prevalent edible mollusk Donax trunculus (Bivalvia, Donacidae) widely used as a sentinel species for the assessment of marine pollution. The present work aims to measure the difference between two localities, one being full of different pollutants (Sidi Salem) and the other being relatively clean (El Battah) and to evaluate the ability of D. trunculus to overcome the environmental stress during a transplantation experiment by a determination of fatty acid profile, the enzymes activities and the level of metallothioneins (MTs), a biomarker of metallic contamination. Adults of D. trunculus were collected at Sidi Salem (contaminated site) and transplanted into El Battah (reference site) for 21 days in cages (60 × 60 × 60 cm with a 2 mm mesh). Biochemical analyzes were conducted at different times (0, 7, 14 and 21 days). At 0-day experiment: the rate of the fatty acids, the enzymes activities and MT levels at the site of Sidi Salem (polluted site) were significantly different from those of El Battah. During the transplantation a gradual restoration of fatty acids rates, enzymes activities and MT levels was observed. At the end of the period of transplantation, the values are comparable to those of El Battah. A two-way ANOVA (time, site) on data revealed significant effects of time and site. Overally, D. trunculus is able to induce its detoxification system and to restore relatively rapidly the status of individuals from the reference site (El Battah).

Increase in industrial growth, urban and agricultural pollution, with consequent impacts on aquatic ecosystems are a major focus of research worldwide. Still, not many studies assess the impacts of contamination through in situ studies, using native species, also considering the influence of seasonality on their responses. This study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the basin of the Upper Iguaçu River, the main source of water supply to Curitiba, a major capital of Southern Brazil, and its Metropolitan area. Several biomarkers were evaluated after in situ exposure of the native catfish Rhamdia quelen inside cages for 7 days. Ten study sites were chosen along the basin, based on a diffuse gradient of contamination, corresponding to regions upstream, downstream, and within “great Curitiba”. In each site, fish were exposed in Summer and Winter. The complex mixture of contaminants of this hydrographic basin generated mortality, and ion-, osmoregulatory and respiratory disturbances in the catfish as, for example, reduction of plasma osmolality and ionic concentrations, increased hematocrit levels and gill water content, altered branchial and renal activities of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, as well as raised levels of plasma cortisol and glucose. Biomarkers were mostly altered in fish exposed in Great Curitiba and immediately downstream. There was a notable influence of season on the responses of the jundiá. A multivariate redundancy analysis revealed that the best environmental variables explained 30% of the variation in biomarkers after controlling for spatial autocorrelation. Thus, this approach and the chosen parameters can be satisfactorily used to evaluate contamination environments with complex mixtures of contaminants, in other urban basins as well.

Coasts of South China have experienced an unprecedented growth in its marine-caged fish industry. We analyzed mercury concentrations and stable mercury isotope ratios in fourteen fish species from two cage-cultured farms in Southern China. Total mercury concentrations of all species were lower than the human health screening values, but the human exposures through consumption of several carnivorous fish exceeded the USEPA's reference dose. Isotopic compositions in the sediment (δ202Hg: −1.45‰ to −1.23‰; Δ199Hg: −0.04‰ to –0.01‰) suggested that mercury in these farms were from coal combustion and industrial inputs. Commercial food pellets and fresh fish viscera provided the major sources of methylmercury to the farmed fish and dominated their mercury isotopic signatures. Non-carnivorous fish presented lower δ202Hg and Δ199Hg values than the carnivorous fish. Using a mixing model, we demonstrated that the majority of mercury in non-carnivorous species came from pellets and in carnivorous fish came from combined diets of pellets and viscera. Meanwhile, methylmercury concentrations and % methylmercury in the fish were positively correlated with δ202Hg values but not with Δ199Hg values, mainly because fish eating similar feeds maintained similar Δ199Hg values. Environmental influences of cage farming such as fish feces and uneaten viscera that continuously provide organic mercury to the environments need to be considered.

The decreasing ocean pH seems to adversely affect marine organisms, including crustaceans, which leads to potential threats to seafood safety. The present investigation evaluated the effect of seawater acidification on the edible marine mud crab Scylla serrata instars. The experimental setup was designed using a multi-cell cage based system assembled with 20 pre holed PVC pipes containing 20 individual crabs to avoid cannibalism. The crab instars were exposed to CO₂ driven acidified seawater at pH 7.8 (IPCC forecast pH at the end of the 21ˢᵗ century), 7.6, 7.4, 7.2, and 7.0 for 60 days. The crabs reared in seawater without acidification at pH 8.2 served as control. The present study revealed a notable decrease in survival, feed intake, growth, molting, tissue biochemical constituents, minerals, chitin, and alkaline phosphatase in S. serrata instar reared in acidified seawater, denotes the adverse effect of seawater acidification on crabs. The significant elevations in antioxidants, lipid peroxidation, and metabolic enzymes in all acidified seawater compared to ambient pH indicates the physiological stress of the crabs' instars. The changes in the metabolic enzymes reveal the metabolism of protein and glucose for additional energy required by the crabs to tolerate the acidic stress. Hence, the present study provides insight into the seawater acidification can adversely affect the crab S. serrata.

Microplastics have emerged as a new anthropogenic substrate that can readily be colonized by microorganisms. Nevertheless, microbial community succession and assembly among different microplastics in nearshore mariculture cages remains poorly understood. Using an in situ incubation experiment, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and the neutral model, we investigated the prokaryotic communities attached to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) in a mariculture cage in Xiangshan Harbor, China. The α-diversities and compositions of microplastic-attached prokaryotic communities were significantly distinct from free-living and small particle-attached communities in the surrounding water but relatively similar to the large particle-attached communities. Although a distinct prokaryotic community was developed on each type of microplastic, the communities on PE and PP more closely resembled each other. Furthermore, the prokaryotic community dissimilarity among all media (microplastics and water fractions) tended to decrease over time. Hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria Alcanivorax preferentially colonized PE, and the genus Vibrio with opportunistically pathogenic members has the potential to colonize PET. Additionally, neutral processes dominated the prokaryotic community assembly on PE and PP, while selection was more responsible for the prokaryotic assembly on PET. The assembly of Planctomycetaceae and Thaumarchaeota Marine Group I taxa on three microplastics were mainly governed by selection and neutral processes, respectively. Our study provides further understanding of microplastic-associated microbial ecology in mariculture environments.
