Nutrient burial and environmental changes in the Yangtze Delta in response to recent river basin human activities
2019
Liu, Yueying | Deng, Bing | Du, Jinzhou | Zhang, Guosen | Hou, Lijun
High resolution sediment records in the Yangtze Delta front were constructed to reveal recent environmental changes in response to river basin human activities. Increases in nutrient and organic C influxes that began in the 1950s, together with elevated primary productivity and increased chemical fertilizer application, suggested a shift toward anthropogenic-predominated environmental changes during this period. The depletion of total organic C (TOC), total N (TN), and biogenic Si (BSi), along with the decline in sedimentation rate and coarsening of sediment coincided with the development of hydrological engineering in the river basin from the 1980s. Reservoir Si retention substantially altered river mouth primary productivity community composition from diatoms to non-diatoms, thereby changing the BSi/TOC molar ratio in the sediment profile. Estimation of biogenic component burial fluxes was conducted to assess the variation and potential impacts. A recent dramatic decline in biogenic component burial in the delta area suggested a low nutrient removal efficiency in this region, due to the decrease in sediment discharge. Consequently, more nutrients have been further transported to the inner shelf and open waters instead of being buried in the delta sediment, thereby increasing the environmental pressure in the Yangtze Delta and adjoining coastal area.

A rapid method based on solvent extraction followed by direct injection in liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) was developed for the targeted and suspect screening of contaminants in the soft tissues of the pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata. The quantification method was first validated for the targeted analysis of 21 contaminants including some pharmaceutically active compounds, with the relative recoveries ranging from 88 to 123%, and method detection limits generally below 1 ng g⁻¹ on the wet weight (ww) basis. This targeted analysis method was then applied to oyster samples collected around the Qatari coast between 2017/2018, and none of the 21 compounds were detected in these samples. The post-acquisition data treatment based on the accurate mass measurement in both full MS scan and All Ions MS/MS was further used for mining other contaminants in oyster extracts, as well as 21 targeted compounds spiked in oyster extracts (suspect screening). The 21 spiked compounds were identified successfully and the estimated limit of identification for the individual 21 compounds ranged from 0.5 to 117 ng g⁻¹ ww of oyster tissues. A phthalate, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was identified to be present in oyster extracts from 2018 batches, at a concentration level significantly higher than that in procedure blanks. These results confirmed that high resolution MS data obtained using the targeted method can be exploited through suspect screening workflows to identify contaminants in the tissues of bioindicator mollusks. However, a number of false identifications could be obtained and future work will be on improving the success rate of the correct identifications using this workflow.

Chokka squid (Loligo reynaudii) from three sites along the South African coast were analyzed for halogenated natural products (HNPs) and anthropogenic persistent organic pollutants (POPs). HNPs were generally more than one order of magnitude more abundant than POPs. The most prevalent pollutant, i.e. the HNP 2,3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-heptachloro-1′-methyl-1,2′-bipyrrole (Q1), was detected in all chokka squid samples with mean concentrations of 105, 98 and 45 ng/g lipid mass, respectively, at the Indian Ocean (site A), between both oceans (site B) and the South Atlantic Ocean (site C). In addition, bromine containing polyhalogenated 1′-methyl-1,2′-bipyrroles (PMBPs), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (2,4,6-TBP, up to 28 ng/g lipid mass), polybrominated methoxy diphenyl ethers, MHC-1, TBMP and other HNPs were also detected. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were the predominant class of anthropogenic POPs. PCB 153 was the most abundant PCB congener in chokka squid from the Indian Ocean, and PCB 138 in samples from the South Atlantic Ocean and between both oceans.

2019
Shabani, Fatemeh | Nasrolahi, Ali | Thiel, Martin
Global concern about floating marine debris and its fundamental role in shaping coastal biodiversity is growing, yet there is very little knowledge about debris-associated rafting communities in many areas of the world's oceans. In the present study, we examined the encrusting assemblage on different types of stranded debris (wood, plastic, glass, and metal cans) along the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. In total, 21 taxa were identified on 132 items. The average frequency of occurrence (±SE) across all sites and stranded debris showed that the barnacle Amphibalanus amphitrite (68.9 ± 1.1%), the oyster Saccostrea cucullata (40.9 ± 0.7%), the polychaete Spirobranchus kraussii (27.3 ± 0.5%), green algae (22 ± 0.5%) and the coral Paracyathus stokesii (14.4 ± 0.7%) occurred most frequently. Relative substratum coverage was highest for A. amphitrite (44.3 ± 2.7%), followed by green algae (14.4 ± 1.5%), Spirobranchus kraussii (9.3 ± 1.3%), Saccostrea cucullata (7.6 ± 1.3%) and the barnacle Microeuraphia permitini (5.8 ± 0.9%). Despite the significant difference in coverage of rafting species on plastic items among different sites, there was no clear and consistent trend of species richness and coverage from the eastern (Strait of Hormuz) to the western part of the Persian Gulf. Some rafting species (bryozoans and likely barnacles) were found to be non-indigenous species in the area. As floating marine debris can transport non-indigenous species and increase the risk of bio-invasions to this already naturally- and anthropogenically-stressed water body, comprehensive monitoring efforts should be made to elucidate the vectors and arrival of new invasive species to the region.

2019
The concentrations and seasonal variations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air and seawater dissolved samples from the coastal area of Dalian were investigated, as well as their air-water exchanges. The average concentrations of PAHs were 27.5 ± 14.6 ng/m³ and 49.5 ± 20.5 ng/L in the air and water, respectively. Phenanthrene was the dominant congener in both air and water dissolved phase. Seasonality was discovered in the air with the concentrations higher in winter than in summer, but not in the water dissolved phase. Air-water exchange trends also displayed apparent seasonality with 3–4 ring PAHs generally being volatilization or equilibrium in summer but deposition in winter, which highlighted the important influence of temperature on the air-water exchange direction of PAHs. The air-water exchange fluxes of individual PAH congeners ranged from −24331 to 6541 ng/m²/d, and the highest deposition and volatilization fluxes both appeared at the industrial areas, which emphasized the influence of point source emission to the magnitude of air-water diffusion flux of PAHs. Multivariate source apportionment approaches, including principle component analysis, diagnostic ratios, and positive matrix factorization, were conducted, which suggested that PAHs in water originated from multiple sources. Frequent port transport correlated vehicle/ship emission rather than coal combustion may be the primary contributor of PAHs to the coastal air and water.

Microplastics are a significant issue in the world's oceans. These small plastic particles (<5 mm in size) are becoming globally ubiquitous in the marine environment and are ingested by various fish species. Here we investigate the incidence of microplastics in juvenile Chinook salmon and their nearshore marine environments on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We completed a series of beach seines, plankton tows and sediment cores in nearshore areas of importance to juvenile salmon. Microplastics were extracted from fish, water and sediment samples and concentrations were quantified. Microplastics analysis, consisting predominantly of fibrous plastics, showed juvenile Chinook salmon contained 1.2 ± 1.4 (SD) microplastics per individual while water and sediment samples had 659.9 ± 520.9 microplastics m⁻³ and 60.2 ± 63.4 microplastics kg⁻¹ dry weight, respectively. We found no differences in microplastic concentrations in juvenile Chinook and water samples among sites but observed significantly higher concentrations in sediment at the Deep Bay site compared to Nanaimo and Cowichan Bay sites. Chinook microplastic concentrations were relatively low compared to literature values and, given the size and type of microplastics we observed, are unlikely to represent an immediate threat to fish in this area. However, microplastics less than 100 μm in size were not included in the study and may represent a greater threat due to their ability to translocate through tissues.

Zhang, Ruijie | Yu, Kefu | Li, An | Wang, Yinghui | Huang, Xueyong
Manmade antibiotics are emerging organic pollutants widely detected in the marine environment. In this study, 14 out of 19 target antibiotics were detected in corals collected from coastal and offshore regions in the South China Sea. The average total antibiotic concentrations (∑19ABs) in the two regions were similar: 28 ng/g for coastal corals and 31 ng/g for offshore corals, based on dry tissue weight (dw). Fluoroquinolones (FQs) were predominant antibiotics in the coastal corals (mean ∑FQs: 18 ng/g dw), while sulfonamides (SAs) predominated in the offshore corals (mean ∑SAs: 23 ng/g dw). However, corals living in coastal regions tend to excrete more mucus than corals in offshore habitat. We found 53% by average of ∑19ABs in the mucus of the coastal corals; while in offshore corals, most antibiotics (88% by average) were accumulated in the tissues. In addition, the tissue-mucus mass distribution differs among individual antibiotics. Sulfonamides were mainly accumulated in tissues while fluoroquinolones were present mainly in mucus. The results of this study suggest that mucus played an important role in the bioaccumulation of antibiotics by corals. It may resist the bioaccumulation of antibiotics by coral tissue, especially for the coastal corals. Additionally, corals were compared with other marine biotas in the study area and found to be more bioaccumulative towards antibiotics.

da Fonseca, Tainá Garcia | Abessa, Denis M.S. | Bebianno, Maria João
The increasing consumption of anticancer drugs through single and/or combinatory chemotherapy worldwide raised concern regarding their toxicity burden in coastal zones. The toxicity of a mixture of three compounds involving the drugs cisplatin (CisPt), cyclophosphamide (CP) and tamoxifen (TAM) was determined on the marine polychaete Nereis diversicolor exposed to an increasing range of their concentrations, respectively: Mix A: 0.1 + 10 + 0.1 ng L−1; Mix B: 10 + 100 + 10 ng L−1; Mix C: 100 + 500 + 25 ng L−1; Mix D: 100 + 1000 + 100 ng L−1. Different endpoints were assessed, including disturbance in the burrowing behaviour, neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase – AChE activity), antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase – SOD; catalase – CAT; selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase – Se-GPx and total glutathione peroxidases T-GPx activities), biotransformation metabolism (glutathione-S-transferases - GST), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and genotoxicity (DNA damage). Biological effects of the mixtures of anticancer compounds on N. diversicolor were compared with previous studies about effects on the same biological model under single-drug exposure conducted with the same molecules. Regarding SOD activity, TAM showed an antagonist effect over CisPt and CP in mixtures C and D. In Mix D, there was a synergistic effect of TAM and CisPt that inhibited CAT activity and an additive interaction of CisPt and CP on the Phase II biotransformation enzyme. Drugs in Mix A also suppressed polychaetes' GST activity, although different from the respective single-drug responses, besides able to induce T-GPx activity, that was not sufficient to avoid oxidative damage and mid-grade DNA damage. Due to the absence of burrowing impairment in Mix A, mechanisms involved in neurotoxicity were other than the one driven by AChE alterations. At the intermediary concentrations (Mix B and C), only LPO occurred. Data from drugs individually may not predict the risks provided by mixtures.

It has become apparent that the coastal zones of aquatic environments are significantly affected by plastics pollution. The accumulation of marine plastic litter on beaches is an important problem due to their significant environmental impacts. In this study, 13 coastal areas in Iskenderun Bay (NE Levantine coast of Turkey) were sampled in May 2018 to investigate meso and macroplastic (0.5–123.4 cm) pollution. A total of 1424 meso and macroplastic items in five categories (filament, film, foam, fragments, and pellets) were collected. The average meso and macroplastic concentration was 12.2 ± 3.5 pcs m−2 (12.3 ± 3.5 g m−2) and the mean size for all stations was 3.7 ± 0.16 cm. The highest meso and macroplastic concentration was found in the Dörtyol location (46.2 ± 7.6 pcs m−2) and the lowest concentration was found in the Y. Lagün location (2.3 ± 0.2 pcs m−2). Plastics were separated into 14 different groups based on their origins. The most dominant type was hard plastics (broken, fragmented, and deformed) with 59.8% and greenhouse coverage films with 11%. Our results shows that regardless their source plastics fluxes at beaches from various pathways. Results of this study provide useful information for designing monitoring strategies and setting management goals.

Despite high production and usage of parabens and bisphenols, little is known about their spatiotemporal distribution in the marine environment. In this study, we determined the concentrations of several parabens and their metabolites as well as bisphenol analogues in sediment collected from coastal areas of northern China. All sediment samples, including surface sediment and sediment cores, contained at least one of the parabens analyzed, and the total concentrations of parabens (ΣPBs; sum of six parabens) ranged from 1.37 to 24.2 ng/g dw (geometric mean: 3.30–6.09 g/g dw), which was comparable to or slightly higher than those found for the total concentrations of five detectable bisphenols (ΣBPAs; geometric mean: 2.18–4.61 ng/g dw). 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, a common metabolite of parabens, was found in all samples at concentrations in the range of 6.85–437 ng/g dw, which was one order of magnitude lower than those found for benzoic acid. Methyl-, ethyl-, and propyl-parabens were the predominant paraben analogues, collectively accounting for >88% of ΣPBs. Bisphenol A and bisphenol F were the two major bisphenols, collectively accounting for >86% of ΣBPAs. We also examined vertical profiles in concentrations of target analytes in sediment cores. The sediment core from the Shandong Peninsula showed a gradual increase in the concentrations of several parent and metabolic parabens as well as bisphenols during the past decade. Relatively higher concentrations of parabens and bisphenols were found in sediment cores collected from industrialized areas. Significant positive correlations were found among the concentrations of parabens in sediment, which suggested the existence of similar sources for these compounds. Overall, our findings suggest that the Bohai Sea coast is moderately contaminated with parabens and bisphenols in comparison to other coastal areas in China or elsewhere.
