Fe–N co-doped biochar is recently an emerging carbocatalyst for persulfate activation in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). However, the involved catalytic mechanisms remain controversial and distinct effects of coexisting water components are still not very clear. Herein, we reported a novel N-doped biochar-coupled crystallized Fe phases composite (Fe@N-BC₈₀₀) as efficient and low-cost peroxydisulfate (PDS) activators to degrade bisphenol A (BPA), and the underlying influencing mechanism of coexisting inorganic anions (IA) and humic constituent. Due to the formation of graphitized nanosheets with high defects (AI index>0.5, ID/IG = 1.02), Fe@N-BC₈₀₀ exhibited 2.039, 5.536, 8.646, and 23.154-fold higher PDS catalytic activity than that of Fe@N-BC₆₀₀, Fe@N-BC₄₀₀, N-BC, BC. Unlike radical pathway driven by carbonyl group and pyrrolic N of low/mid-temperature Fe@N–BCs. The defective graphitized nanosheets and Fe-Nx acted separately as electron transfer and radical pathway active sites of Fe@N-BC₈₀₀, where π-π sorption assisted with pyrrolic N and pore-filling facilitated BPA degradation. The strong inhibitory effects of PO₄³⁻ and NO₂⁻ were ascribed to competitive adsorption of phosphate (61.11 mg g⁻¹) and nitrate (23.99 mg g⁻¹) on Fe@N-BC₈₀₀ via electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding. In contrast, HA competed for the pyrrolic-N site and hindered electron delivery. Moreover, BPA oxidation pathways initiated by secondary free radicals were proposed. The study facilitates a thorough understanding of the intrinsic properties of designed biochar and contributes new insights into the fate of degradation byproducts formed from ISCO treatment of micropollutants.

Organic contaminations and heavy metals in soils cause large harm to human and environment, which could be remedied by planting specific plants. The biochars produced by crop straws could provide substantial benefits as a soil amendment. In the present study, biochars based on wheat, corn, soybean, cotton and eggplant straws were produced. The eggplant straws based biochar (ESBC) represented higher Cd and pyrene adsorption capacity than others, which was probably owing to the higher specific surface area and total pore volume, more functional groups and excellent crystallization. And then, ESBC amendment hybrid Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivation were investigated to remediate the Cd and pyrene co−contaminated soil. With the leaching amount of 100% (v/w, mL water/g soil) and Cd content of 16.8 mg/kg soil, dosing 3% ESBC (wt%, biochar/soil) could keep 96.2% of the Cd in the 10 cm depth soil layer where the ryegrass root could reach, and it positively help root adsorb contaminations. Compared with the single planting ryegrass, the Cd and pyrene removal efficiencies significantly increased to 22.8% and 76.9% by dosing 3% ESBC, which was mainly related with the increased plant germination of 80% and biomass of 1.29 g after 70 days culture. When the ESBC dosage increased to 5%, more free radicals were injected and the ryegrass germination and biomass decreased to 65% and 0.986 g. Furthermore, when the ESBC was added into the ryegrass culture soil, the proportion of Cd and pyrene degrading bacteria Pseudomonas and Enterobacter significantly increased to 4.46% and 3.85%, which promoted the co−contaminations removal. It is suggested that biochar amendment hybrid ryegrass cultivation would be an effective method to remediate the Cd and pyrene co−contaminated soil.

The perdurability of plastics in the environment is one of the major concerns of plastic pollution and, as a consequence, oceans are accumulating large amounts of plastic. The degradation of conventional and biobased materials was evaluated through a laboratory experiment for a year simulating four different conditions in the marine environment. The water column environmental compartment was simulated under euphotic and aphotic (with and without light availability) conditions. The seafloor environmental compartment was simulated with sediment under non-polluted and polluted conditions. By combining weight loss (%), spectroscopic and thermal analyses, the degradation patterns regarding the polymer structure were assessed. The studied biobased materials were polylactic acid (PLA) based materials and showed higher degradability than conventional ones. The weight loss of conventional materials was not influenced by the water column or sediment, while in PLA-based materials, the degradation rates were ca. 5 times greater in the sediment than in the water column. The absorbance (Abs) value at 3400 cm⁻¹ for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and carbonyl (CO) index for PET and PLA could be useful to detect early signs of degradation. The crystallization index could be a useful parameter to discriminate degradation stages. The obtained results highlight the different degradability rates of materials depending on the specific environmental marine conditions.

As tracers, rare earth elements (REEs) can reflect the influence of human activities on the environmental changes in aquatic systems. To reveal the geochemical behavior of REEs in a water–sediment system influenced by human activities, the contents of REEs in the surface water and sediment in the Chaohu Lake Basin were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS). The results show that the ΣREE contents in the surface water are 0.10–0.850 μg L⁻¹, the ΣREE contents in the sediments are 71.14–210.01 μg g⁻¹, and the average contents are 0.24 μg L⁻¹ and 126.72 μg g⁻¹, respectively. Almost all water and sediment samples have obvious light REE (LREE) enrichment, which is the result of the input of LREE-rich substances released by natural processes and human activities (industrial and agricultural production). Under the alkaline water quality conditions of Chaohu Lake, REEs (especially LREEs) are easily removed from water by adsorption/coprecipitation reactions with suspended colloidal particles, which leads to the enrichment of LREEs in sediments. The Ce anomaly of the water–sediment system is related to the oxidation environment, while the Eu anomaly is related to the plagioclase crystallization. Significant Gd anomalies was observed in the downstream of rivers flowing through urban areas, which was related to the anthropogenic Gd wastewater discharged by hospitals. The ∑REE–δEu and provenance index (PI) discrimination results are consistent, indicating that the sediments in Chaohu Lake mainly come from rivers flowing through the southwest farmland. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of REEs shows that these tributaries are significantly affected by agricultural activities. The distribution and accumulation of REEs in Chaohu Lake are the result of the interaction of natural and human processes. The results can provide a scientific reference for the distribution and environmental behavior of REEs in aquatic environments disturbed by human beings.

Struvite (MgNH₄PO₃·6H₂O) crystallization is one of important methods of phosphorus recovery from wastewater. As to livestock wastewater, the high-strength occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes might induce struvite recovery to spread antibiotic resistance to the environment. However, limited information has been reported on the simultaneous transport of antibiotics and ARGs in struvite recovery. In the present study, tetracyclines (TCs) and tetracyclines antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were selected as the targeted pollutants, and their discrepant residues in struvite recovery from swine wastewater were investigated. TCs and ARGs were obviously detected, with their contents of 4.88–79.5 mg/kg and 6.99 × 10⁷–2.14 × 10¹¹ copies/g, notably higher than those of TCs 0.550–1.94 mg/kg and ARGs 3.98 × 10⁴–5.66 × 10⁷ copies/g obtained from synthetic wastewater. The correlational relationship revealed that predominant factors affecting TCs and ARGs transports were different. Results from network analyses indicated that among the total edges, the negative correlations between TCs and ARGs predominately occupied 18.0%. The redundancy analysis revealed that mineral components in the recovered products, including struvite, K-struvite and amorphous calcium phosphate, coupling with organic contents, displayed insignificant roles on TCs residues, where heavy metals exerted positive and remarkable functions to boost TCs migration. Unexpectedly, mineral components and heavy metals did not displayed significant promotion on ARGs transport as a whole.

Recovering phosphorus (P) from waste streams takes the unique advantage in simultaneously addressing the crisis of eutrophication and the shortage of P resource. A novel calcium decorated sludge carbon (Ca-SC) was developed from dyeing industry wastewater treatment sludge by decorating calcium (Ca) to effectively adsorb phosphorus from solution. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques were used to characterize the Ca-SCs, followed by isotherm and kinetic sorption experiments. A preferred design with CaCO₃ to sludge mass ratio of 1:2 was found to have a sorption capacity of 116.82 mg/g for phosphorus. This work reveals the crucial role of well-dispersed nano-rod calcium on the Ca-SC surface for the sorption of phosphorus. Moreover, the decoration of nano-rod calcium was found to further promote the uptake of phosphorus through the formation of hydroxylapatite (Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH)). Thus, the development of decorated Ca-SC for sorption of phosphorus is very important in solving the P pollution and resource loss.

Uranium (U) contamination often occurs in the topsoil (arable layer), and is a serious threat to crop growth. However, conventional microbial reduction methods are sensitive to oxygen and cannot be used to treat aerobic topsoils. In this study, phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) were isolated from U-contaminated topsoil and used for soil remediation. Microbial metabolites and products were analyzed, and the pathways and mechanisms of PSM immobilization were revealed. The results showed that strain PSM8 had the highest phosphate-solubilizing capacity (dissolved P was 208 ± 5 mg/L) and the highest U removal rate (97.3 ± 0.1%). Multi-technical analyses indicated that bacterial surface functional groups adsorbed (UO₂)²⁺ ions on the cell surface, glycolysis produced 3–10 mg/L of lactic acid (pH 4.7–6.0), and lactic acid solubilized Ca₃(PO₄)₂ to form stable chernikovite (a type of uranyl phosphate) on the cell surface. The coupled application of Ca₃(PO₄)₂ and strain PSM8 significantly reduced the bioavailability of soil U (62 ± 11%), converting U from the exchangeable to the residual phase and P from the steady to the available form. In addition, pot experiments showed that soil remediation promoted crop growth and significantly reduced U uptake and toxicity to photosynthetic systems. These findings demonstrate that PSM and Ca₃(PO₄)₂ are good coupled fertilizers for U-contaminated agricultural soil.

Struvite recovered from swine wastewater can be used as a good slow release fertilizer. Nevertheless, the presence of heavy metals would be easily precipitated with struvite and increase the ecological risk for its agricultural use. This paper investigated the possibility of using process variables for heavy metal (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cr3+) minimization during struvite crystallization in swine wastewater. The heavy metal content, effect ratios (ER) of the citric acid concentration under varying conditions were tested and their SEM, EDS and XRD patterns were compared for morphology analysis. The results show that an increase in pH decreased the content of Cu, Zn and Cr in recovered precipitates. Heavy metal content in the precipitates increased markedly with their initial concentrations in the solution. The effect ratio calculation indicates that Cr has the strongest co-precipitation potential, followed by Zn and Cu. An increase in citric acid concentration reduced the heavy metal removal efficiency (14.3, 27.7 and 28.1% for Cu, Zn and Cr, respectively) but did not decrease their content in struvite precipitates. What is more, increase of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) to soluble phosphate molar ratio significantly decreased Cu, Zn removal efficiency (52.2 and 50% respectively), while Mg:PO4P molar ratio had much less effect.

Lipid peroxidation level (LPO), shell biometry, shape, elemental content, and microstructure were studied in three populations of Siphonaria pectinata in the complex lagoon-channel of Bizerte across a coastal pollution gradient (northern Tunisia). LPO was found in higher concentrations in harbour populations, and shells had centred apex and were flattened. Shells were also thicker, particularly in the inner layer, with many fibrous inter-beds formed. Difference in crystallization pattern was observed in numerous shells from all three populations, being more common in harbours. From the control station to the contaminated stations, shell elemental changes were observed, with a decrease in Ca, P, Sr, and S and an increase in Cl, Cd, Cu, Fe, and K. All of these findings suggested that shell alterations could be used as a good biomarker for coastal contamination.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Livestock wastewater is a valuable vein of resources for the production of reused water, renewable energy, and fertilizers. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding on the opportunities and challenges to anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for livestock wastewater treatment and resource recovery. RECENT FINDINGS: AnMBRs that integrates a membrane filtration process with anaerobic digestion exhibit high promise for livestock wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Organic matter in livestock wastewater can be biodegraded for the production of methane-rich biogas and bioactive substances, such as phytohormones, free amino acids, vitamins, and inorganic nutrients (e.g. ammonium and phosphate). Thus, the AnMBR effluent from livestock wastewater treatment can be potentially used for direct irrigation and processed for nutrient capture, for example, by struvite crystallization. Nevertheless, there remain several technical challenges to AnMBR development for livestock wastewater treatment. These mainly include digester susceptibility to inhibitory substances, low removal of antibiotics and heavy metals, and membrane fouling. Thus, recent studies have proposed several potential approaches to address these challenges to accelerate AnMBR development. These approaches can be largely classified as wastewater regulation, microbial acclimatization, process optimization, and amender addition. In this paper, we critically reviewed the performance of AnMBR for livestock wastewater treatment with respective to biogas production and contaminant removal. Key technical challenges and their potential countermeasures were delineated to shed light on further development of AnMBR in the field.
