The search for optimal catalysts to improve the working efficiency of ozonation has always been an important issue in the research field of advanced oxidation processes. In this study, a novel catalyst, ferrosilicon, was selected as the catalyst in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation to degrade ibuprofen (IBP) in water and treat real pharmaceutical wastewater. During the procedure, 45#ferrosilicon exhibited the best catalytic activity. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the IBP removal reached 75%, which was a great improvement compared to the 37% removal by ozone alone. The 45#-ferrosilicon-catalysed ozonation also achieved 68% TOC removal for real pharmaceutical wastewater, which was 31% higher than that by ozone alone. The degradation pathway of IBP was proposed using GC/MS. The EPR test proved that the main active species in the system were free active radicals •OH, and the measured accumulative •OH amount was 102 μmol. The characterization results show that the nascent metallic oxides, hydroxides, and hydroxyoxides on the ferrosilicon surface facilitated the decomposition of ozone molecules and generation of free active radicals. The removal of target organic contaminants in the water was mainly attributed to the oxidization of these highly active species.

Developing a biotechnical system with rapid degradation of pesticide is critical for reducing environmental, food security and health risks. Here, we investigated a novel epigenetic mechanism responsible for the degradation of the pesticide atrazine (ATZ) in rice crops mediated by the key component CORONATINE INSENSITIVE 1a (OsCOI1a) in the jasmonate-signaling pathway. OsCOI1a protein was localized to the nucleus and strongly induced by ATZ exposure. Overexpression of OsCOI1a (OE) significantly conferred resistance to ATZ toxicity, leading to the improved growth and reduced ATZ accumulation (particularly in grains) in rice crops. HPLC/Q-TOF-MS/MS analysis revealed increased ATZ-degraded products in the OE plants, suggesting the occurrence of vigorous ATZ catabolism. Bisulfite-sequencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays showed that ATZ exposure drastically reduced DNA methylation at CpG context and histone H3K9me2 marks in the upstream of OsCOI1a. The causal relationships between the DNA demethylation (hypomethylatioin), OsCOI1a expression and subsequent detoxification and degradation of ATZ in rice and environment were well established by several lines of biological, genetic and chemical evidence. Our work uncovered a novel regulatory mechanism implicated in the defense linked to the epigenetic modification and jasmonate signaling pathway. It also provided a modus operandi that can be used for metabolic engineering of rice to minimize amounts of ATZ in the crop and environment.

Herein, an efficient visible-light-driven BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposite was effectively fabricated via a facile co-precipitation procedure. The physicochemical properties of BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposites were investigated via Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence (PL), UV visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoelectrochemical studies (PEC). The photocatalytic activity (PCA) of BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposites was assessed with regard to the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine-B (RhB) when subjected to visible light irradiation (VLI). Upon 90 min of illumination, the optimal 3%-BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposite showed a greater photocatalytic degradation, which was ∼3 times higher than the bare AgVO₃. The lower PL intensity of 3%-BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposite exposed the low recombination rate, which improved the photo-excited charge carriers separation efficiency. The experimental outcomes showed that the BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposite might be an encouraging material for treatment of industrial and metropolitan wastewater. Moreover, a plausible RhB degradation mechanism was proposed proving the participation of the generated OH and O₂– radicals in the degradation over BiFeO₃/AgVO₃ nanocomposite.

Water pollution by microplastics (MPs) is a contemporary issue which has recently gained lots of attentions. Despite this, very limited studies were conducted on the degradation of MPs. In this paper, we reported the treatment of synthetic mono-dispersed suspension of MPs by using electrooxidation (EO) process. MPs synthetic solution was prepared with distilled water and a commercial polystyrene solution containing a surfactant. In addition to anode material, different operating parameters were investigated such as current intensity, anode surface, electrolyte type, electrolyte concentration, and reaction time. The obtained results revealed that the EO process can degrade 58 ± 21% of MPs in 1 h. Analysis of the operating parameters showed that the current intensity, anode material, electrolyte type, and electrolyte concentration substantially affected the MPs removal efficiency, whereas anode surface area had a negligible effect. In addition, dynamic light scattering analysis was performed to evaluate the size distribution of MPs during the degradation. The combination of dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, total organic carbon, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results suggested that the MPs did not break into smaller particles and they degrade directly into gaseous products. This work demonstrated that EO is a promising process for degradation of MPs in water without production of any wastes or by-products.

Plastic pollution in the world's ocean is one of the major environmental challenges that affects the society today, due to their persistence at sea, adverse consequences to marine life and being potentially harmful to human health. Rivers are now widely recognized as being the major input source of land-based plastic waste into the seas. Despite their key role in plastic transportation, riverine plastic pollution research is still in its infancy and plastic sources, hot-spots and degradation processes in riverine systems are to date poorly understood. In this contribution, we introduce a novel concept of following the aging of polypropylene based post-consumer goods placed in known trapping and mobility zones of macroplastics on a fluvial point bar, which was determined through repeated field surveys of macroplastic densities on this bar. As a proof-of-concept, we followed the degradation of 5 identical plastic butter tubs in 5 different locations on a riverbank and significant differences in the aging of the tubs were observed. The degree of aging of the tubs can to some extent be correlated to their proximity to the main river channel, exposure to natural conditions, such as solar radiation, and its storage time on land.

In this work, we prepared nanocomposites of nickel-decorated manganese oxynitride on graphene nanosheets and demonstrated them as photocatalysts for degradation of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The catalyst exhibited a high degradation efficiency over ASA under visible light irradiation and an excellent structural stability after multiple uses. Compared to manganese oxide (MnO) and manganese oxynitride (MnON) nanoparticles, larger specific surface area and smaller band gap were observed for the nanocomposite accounting for the enhanced photocatalytic efficiency. Besides the compositional effect of the catalyst, we also examined the influence of various experimental parameters on the degradation of ASA such as initial concentration, catalyst dose, initial pH and additives. The best performance was obtained for the nanocomposite when the catalyst dose was 10 mg/mL and the initial pH 3. Detection of intermediates during photocatalysis showed that ASA undergoes hydroxylation, demethylation, aromatization, ring opening, and finally complete mineralization into CO₂ and H₂O by reactive species. For practical applications as a photocatalyst, cytotoxicity of the nanocomposite was also evaluated, which revealed its insignificant impact on the cell viability. These results suggest the nanocomposite of nickel-decorated manganese oxynitride on graphene nanosheets as a promising photocatalyst for the remediation of ASA-contaminated water.

The environmental-friendly photocatalytic process with a magnetic catalyst CoFe₂O₄/TiO₂ mediated by solar light for ibuprofen (IBP) degradation in pure water, wastewater effluent and artificial seawater was investigated systematically. The study aims to reveal the efficiency, the mechanism and toxicity evolution during IBP degradation. Hydroxyl radicals and photo-hole (h⁺) were found to contribute to the IBP decay. The presence of SO₄²⁻ showed no significant effect, while NO₃⁻ accelerated the photodegradation, and other anions including HCO₃⁻, Cl⁻, F⁻, and Br⁻ showed significant inhibition. The removal efficiency was significantly elevated with the addition of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) or persulfate (PS) ([Oxidant]₀:[IBP]₀ = 0.4–4), with reaction rate of 5.3–13.1 and 1.3–2.9 times as high as the control group, respectively. However, the reaction was slowed down with the introduction of H₂O₂. A mathematic model was employed to describe the effect of ferrate, high concentration or stepwise addition of ferrate was suggested to play a positive role in IBP photodegradation. Thirteen transformation products were identified and five of them were newly reported. The degradation pathways including hydroxylation, the benzene ring opening and the oxidation of carbon were proposed. IBP can be efficiently removed when spiked in wastewater and seawater despite the decreased degradation rate by 41% and 56%, respectively. Compared to the IBP removal, mineralization was relatively lower. The adverse effect of the parent compound IBP to the green algae Chlorella vulgaris was gradually eliminated with the decomposition of IBP. The transformation product C178a which possibly posed toxicity to rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus can also be efficiently removed, indicating that the photocatalysis process is effective in IBP removal, mineralization and toxicity elimination.

Antibiotic residues in the environment are concerning since results in dispersion of resistance genes. Their degradation is often closely related to microbial metabolism. However, the impacts of soil bacterial community on sulfadiazine (SDZ) dissipation remains unclear, mainly in tropical soils. Our main goals were to evaluate effects of long-term swine manure application on soil bacterial structure as well as effects of soil microbial diversity depletion on SDZ dissipation, using “extinction dilution approach” and ¹⁴C-SDZ. Manure application affected several soil attributes, such as pH, organic carbon (OC), and macronutrient contents as well as bacterial community structure and diversity. Even minor bacterial diversity depletion impacted SDZ mineralization and non-extractible residue (NER) formation rates, but NER recovered along 42 d likely due to soil diversity recovery. However, this period may be enough to spread resistance genes into the environment. Surprisingly, the non-manured natural soil (NS–S1) showed faster SDZ dissipation rate (DT₉₀ = 2.0 versus 21 d) and had a great number of bacterial families involved in major SDZ dissipation pathways (mineralization and mainly NER), such as Isosphaeraceae, Ktedonobacteraceae, Acidobacteriaceae_(Subgroup_1), Micromonosporaceae, and Sphingobacteriaceae. This result is unique and contrasts our hypothesis that long-term manured soils would present adaptive advantages and, consequently, have higher SDZ dissipation rates. The literature suggests instantaneous chemical degradation of SDZ in acidic soils responsible to the fast formation of NER. Our results show that if chemical degradation happens, it is soon followed by microbial metabolism (biodegradation) performed by a pool of bacteria and the newly formed metabolites should favors NER formation since SDZ presented low sorption. It also showed that SDZ mineralization is a low redundancy function.
