Health Risks of Ecosystem Services in Ologe Lagoon, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria

Ologe Lagoon is one of Lagos, Nigeria’s five major lagoons, which provide essential ecosystem services such as agriculture, fishing, transportation, salt and sand mining, tourism, and industrial development. There are concerns, however, that the lagoon’s water may not be safe for the ecosystem functions it offers. As a result, the physicochemical properties, heavy metal concentrations, and microbial loads of water samples from the lagoon, as well as their health risks, were examined in this study. Physicochemical analysis showed that calcium, chloride, nitrates, sulphate, dissolved oxygen, acidity, alkalinity, total dissolved solid, and total suspended solid were present within the World Health Organization permissible limits, but not so for phosphate and temperature. The heavy metal analysis revealed that the water had non-permissible levels of iron, cadmium, chromium, nickel, manganese, and copper, but lead was normal. The microbiological examination showed abnormal bacteria counts, while coliform and fungus were not detected. The average daily oral and dermal exposure to cadmium, chromium, and nickel were higher than the recommended daily intake, but iron, lead, and copper were within the limits. The hazard quotient of oral and dermal exposure to cadmium, dermal exposure to chromium, and oral exposure to manganese were higher than the recommended limit (> 1). The carcinogenic risks of Cd, Cr, and Ni were also greater than the acceptable limit. The results obtained indicate that Ologe Lagoon’s water is unsafe for the lagoon’s ecosystem functions. Relevant agencies should ensure that waste is treated before being discharged into the lagoon.

Posidonia oceanica is a marine angiosperm endemic from the Mediterranean. Despite their protection, its meadows are regressing. The economic valuation of ecosystem services (ES) assesses the contribution of ecosystems to human well-being and may provide local policy makers help in territorial development. To estimate the economic value of P. oceanica seagrass and the meadows that it forms to better account its presence in coastal development, identification and assessment of ES provided are first performed. Then goods and benefits (GB) and their economical values are estimated. In total, 25ES are identified and 7 GB are economically evaluated. The economic value of GB provided by P. oceanica ranges between 25.3 mil- lion and 45.9 million €/year which means 283–513 €/ha/year. Because of the lack of existing available data, only 7 GB linked to 11/25ES have been estimated. Despite this overall undervaluation, this study offers a value for coastal development policies to take into account.

Common air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), emitted in diesel exhaust, and ozone (O₃), have been implicated in the decline of pollinating insects. Reductionist laboratory assays, focused upon interactions between a narrow range of flowering plant and pollinator species, in combination with atmospheric chemistry models, indicate that such pollutants can chemically alter floral odors, disrupting the cues that foraging insects use to find and pollinate flowers. However, odor environments in nature are highly complex and pollination services are commonly provided by suites of insect species, each exhibiting different sensitivities to different floral odors. Therefore, the potential impacts of pollution-induced foraging disruption on both insect ecology, and the pollination services that insects provide, are currently unknown. We conducted in-situ field studies to investigate whether such pollutants could reduce pollinator foraging and as a result the pollination ecosystem service that those insects provide. Using free-air fumigation, we show that elevating diesel exhaust and O₃, individually and in combination, to levels lower than is considered safe under current air quality standards, significantly reduced counts of locally-occurring wild and managed insect pollinators by 62–70% and their flower visits by 83–90%. These reductions were driven by changes in specific pollinator groups, including bees, flies, moths and butterflies, and coincided with significant reductions (14–31%) in three different metrics of pollination and yield of a self-fertile test plant. Quantifying such effects provides new insights into the impacts of human-induced air pollution on the natural ecosystem services upon which we depend.

Plastic pollution represents the most widespread threaten throughout the world and, amongst aquatic habitats, freshwaters and in particular riparian zones seems to be highly disturbed. Since the plastic storage and accumulation on the riparian vegetation have not yet been deeply investigated, here, we focussed on the riparian zone's function in trapping plastic litter. To do so, we assessed the occurrence and density of plastics in different vegetated (arboreal, shrubby, herbaceous, reed, bush) and unvegetated types in 8 central Italian rivers, running in different land use contexts. Our results showed that plastic pieces, bags, bottles and food containers were the most abundant specific categories on the vegetated types, demonstrating the riparian vegetation role in trapping plastic litter. Specifically, the highest plastic density was found on the shrubby type suggesting that a tree shape retains plastics more easily than all other vegetated and unvegetated types. Shape and size classification of plastics are not significantly different between vegetated and unvegetated types. These findings allow to collect important information on how the riparian vegetation can be exploited in management activities for removing plastic litters from both freshwater and sea, being the former considered the main plastic source for the latter. This study highlights a further ecosystem service as mechanical filter provided by the riparian zone, even if further studies ought to be performed to understand the role of vegetation as plastic trap and the possible detrimental effects of plastics on the plant health status.

The Yellow River Delta (YRD) wetland, the most important estuary wetland in eastern China, has an important ecosystem service function. Rapid and intensive development has inevitably led to the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils. Therefore, identifying quantitative sources and spatial distributions of PTEs is essential for soil environmental protection in the YRD. A total of 240 topsoil samples (0–20 cm) were collected in the Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve (YRDNR) and analyzed the PTE contents. To avoid the biases of the single receptor model, positive matrix factorization, factor analysis with nonnegative constraints, and maximum likelihood principal component analysis-multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares were used for source apportionment of soil PTEs. To promote the efficiency of multivariate geostatistical simulation, a minimum/maximum autocorrelation factor-sequential Gaussian simulation was built to map the spatial patterns of PTEs. Three factors were derived by the three receptor models, and their contributions to the source explanation were similar. As, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn originated from natural sources, with contributions of 85.6%–96.4 %. A total of 61.5 % of Hg was associated with atmospheric deposition of coal combustion and wastewater from upstream. Agricultural activities and oil exploitation contributed 33.5 % and 15.9 % of the Cd and Pb concentrations. Spatial distributions of soil PTEs were controlled by sedimentary grain size. A total of 47.2 % of the total study area was identified as hazardous area for Cd, 10.3 % for As, and 5.4 % for Hg. This work is expected to provide references for soil pollution assessment and management of YRDNR.

Ecosystem services are present everywhere, green vegetation coverage (or green areas) is one of the primary sources of ecosystem services considering urban areas sustainability and peoples urban life quality. Urban vegetation cover loss decreases the capacity of nature to provision ecosystem services; the loss of urban vegetation is also observed within the Amazon. This study aims at identifying urban vegetation loss and relate it to the provision of ecosystem services of reduction of air quality, reduction of air pollution, and climate regulation. Urban vegetation coverage loss was calculated using NDVI on LANDSAT 5 imagery over a 23-year period from 1986 to 2009. NDVI thresholds were arbitrarily selected, and complemented by in locus observation, to establish guidelines for quantitative (area) and qualitative (density) evolution of green cover, divided in six different categories, named as water, bare soil, poor vegetation, moderate vegetation, dense vegetation and very dense vegetation. Data on air pollution, noise pollution and temperature were outsourced from previous works. Measurement show a significant loss of very dense, dense and moderate vegetation coverage and an increase in poor vegetation and bare soil areas, in accordance to increase in air and noise pollution, and local temperature, and provides positive refashions between the loss of urban green coverage and decrease in ecosystem services.

Coastal zone is of great importance in the provision of various valuable ecosystem services. However, it is also sensitive and vulnerable to environmental changes due to high human populations and interactions between the land and ocean. Major threats of pollution from over enrichment of nutrients, increasing metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and climate change have led to severe ecological degradation in the coastal zone, while few studies have focused on the combined impacts of pollution and climate change on the coastal ecosystems at the global level. A global overview of nutrients, metals, POPs, and major environmental changes due to climate change and their impacts on coastal ecosystems was carried out in this study. Coasts of the Eastern Atlantic and Western Pacific were hotspots of concentrations of several pollutants, and mostly affected by warming climate. These hotspots shared the same features of large populations, heavy industry and (semi-) closed sea. Estimation of coastal ocean capital, integrated management of land-ocean interaction in the coastal zone, enhancement of integrated global observation system, and coastal ecosystem-based management can play effective roles in promoting sustainable management of coastal marine ecosystems. Enhanced management from the perspective of mitigating pollution and climate change was proposed.

A limited but emerging body of evidence is suggestive for a beneficial association between contact with green spaces and glucose homeostasis in adults; however, such an evidence for children is scarce. We evaluated the association between time spent in green spaces and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels and impaired fasting glucose (IFG, FBG≥110 mg/dL) in a population-based multicentric sample of 3844 Iranian schoolchildren aged 7–18 years (2015). Participants were instructed to report the average hours per week spent in green spaces separately during each season and in each type of green space (parks, woods/other natural green spaces, and private gardens/agricultural field) for a 12-month period preceding the interview. We developed linear and logistic mixed effects models with centre as random effect to evaluate the association of time spent in green spaces (separately for each type as well as all types together) with FBG and IFG, respectively, controlled for a wide range of covariates including household indicators of socioeconomic status. We observed inverse associations between time spent in green spaces, especially in natural green spaces, and FBG levels. Specifically, 1.83 h increase in the total time spent in green spaces was associated with −0.5 mg/dl (95% confidence intervals: −0.9, −0.1) change in FBG levels. We also observed reduced risk of IFG associated with time spent in green spaces; however, the association was statistically significant only for the time spent in natural green spaces. There were suggestions for stronger associations for those residing in urban areas and those from lower socioeconomic status groups; however, the interaction terms for socioeconomic status and urbanity were not statistically significant. Further longitudinal studies are required to replicate our findings in other settings with different climates and population susceptibilities.

Mercury, a toxic trace metal, has been used extensively as an inexpensive and readily available method of extracting gold from fine-grained sediment. Worldwide, artisanal mining is responsible for one third of all mercury released into the environment. By testing bat hair from museum specimens and field collected samples from areas both impacted and unimpacted by artisanal gold mining in Perú, we show monomethylmercury (MMHg) has increased in the last 100 years. MMHg concentrations were also greatest in the highest bat trophic level (insectivores), and in areas experiencing extractive artisanal mining. Reproductive female bats had higher MMHg concentrations, and both juvenile and adult bats from mercury contaminated sites had more MMHg than those from uncontaminated sites. Bats have important ecological functions, providing vital ecosystem services such as pollination, seed dispersal, and insect control. Natural populations can act as environmental sentinels and offer the chance to expand our understanding of, and responses to, environmental and human health concerns.
