| Periurban areas, zone of transition between urban and rural areas, are submitted to several sources of pollution, both gaseous and particulate. These pollutions originate from local sources such as residential sector, traffic road and agricultural activities, but also from regional ones from adjacent urban and (pseudo-)natural areas. This paper presents a synthesis of the different sources affecting air quality in periurban areas. It is clear that pollutions from anthropogenic activities cannot be fully dissociated to those from (pseudo-)natural ecosystem functioning in these areas. Finally, the atmospheric pollution issues are discussed in emphasis with periurban agriculture, already present and under development in these areas due to the development of short food supply chains and local food consumptions.

| he aim of this study is to bring to light the influence on firewood emissions and performance of several parameters like the moisture content of the fuel, the presence of bark, the caliber of the fuel but also the ignition mode. Many results emerge from this study. First of all, all these parameters significantly impact the emissions of the firewood at the nominal thermal heat output, especially the particles emissions. The presence of bark modifies the particles composition in total carbon. Moreover, the presence of bark induces the emissions of a new family of particles: the nanocrystal. A high moisture of the fuel led to a lower temperature in the combustion chamber. Then, the emissions of unburned gases, like the Volatile Organic Compounds, will considerably increase. The particles emissions and the composition of those particles were also significantly impacted by the moisture of the fuel. Two ignition modes were also studied. It appears that the top-down ignition against the traditional ignition allowed a significant decrease of all the emissions. Nevertheless, the elemental carbon emissions were more important with a top-down ignition.

The article presents the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to a complete sanitation system including the sewer network. It first describes the LCA hypothesis which concerns two types of waste water-treatment plant with the same daily nominal load in BOD5 and associated to the same sewer network derived from the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database Ecoinvent. The two wastewater treatment systems compared are (i) a Vertical Flow Constructed Wetlands (VFCW) for which a detailed inventory was elaborated and (ii) an activated sludge stemming from the LCI database Ecoinvent. LCA scores of VFCW highlight the importance of eutrophication which can be easily explained by the incomplete removal of total N and total P in a VFCW. In a more surprising way, the impact of the network seems considerable. Finally, the article analyses the applicability and limitations of LCA for wastewater treatment with regard to water quality and the needed improvements of water status in LCA.

International audience | Due to the dramatic quantity of plastic debris released into our environment, one of the biggest challenges of the next decades is to trace and quantify microplastics (MPs) in our environments, especially to better evaluate their capacity to transport other contaminants such as trace metals. In this study, trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sn, Sb, Pb, and U) were analyzed in the microplastic subsurface (200 μm) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Microplastics subjected to the marine environment were collected on beaches (Guadeloupe) exposed to the north Atlantic gyre. We established a strategy to discriminate sorbed contaminants from additives based on the metal concentration profiles in MP subsurface using qualitative and quantitative approaches. A spatiotemporal correlation of the sorption pattern was proposed to compare MPs in terms of relative exposure time and time-weighted average concentrations in the exposure media.

Influence of sediment resuspension on the efficacy of geoengineering materials in the control of internal phosphorous loading from shallow eutrophic lakes
2016

Modified clay-based solid-phase phosphorous (P) sorbents are increasingly used as lake geoengineering materials for lake eutrophication control. However, some still dispute the feasibility of using these materials to control internal P loading from shallow eutrophic lakes. The lack of information about P behavior while undergoing frequent sediment resuspension greatly inhibits the modified minerals’ use. In this study, a sediment resuspension generating system was used to simulate the effect of both moderate winds (5.1 m/s) and strong winds (8.7 m/s) on the stability of sediment treated by two geoengineering materials, Phoslock® (a lanthanum modified bentonite) and thermally-treated calcium-rich attapulgite. This study also presents an analysis of the P dynamics across the sediment-water interface of two shallow eutrophic lakes. In addition, the effect of wind velocity on P forms and P supply from the treated sediment were studied using chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique, respectively. Results showed that adding geoengineering materials can enhance the stability of surface sediment and reduce the erosion depth caused by wind accordingly. All treatments can effectively reduce soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration in overlying water when sediment is capped with thermally-treated calcium-rich attapulgite, which performs better than sediment mixed with modified attapulgite but not as well as sediment treated with Phoslock®. However, their efficiency decreased with the increase in occurrences of sediment resuspension. The addition of the selected geoengineering materials effectively reduced the P fluxes across sediment-water interface and lowered P supply ability from the treated sediment during sediment resuspension. The reduction of mobile P and enhancement of calcium bound P and residual P fraction in the treated sediment was beneficial to the long-term lake internal P loading management. All of the results indicated that the studied geoengineering materials are suitable for application in shallow eutrophic lakes with frequent sediment resuspension activity.

Phosphorus-inactivating agents (PIAs) as geoengineering tools in lakes have been investigated extensively, but PIA resuspension in the photic layer occurs frequently in shallow lakes and little is known about the influence of algae on PIA performance. Our results proved that algae increased the dissolved oxygen, pH and dissolved organic carbon concentration substantially. In the absence of sediment, lanthanum modified zeolite (LMZ) as a representative PIA and algae could deplete dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from water but the former was faster than the latter. When LMZ and algae coexisted, the amount of phosphorus that was captured by LMZ was 3.1 times greater than that taken up by algae. An increase in pH or dissolved organic carbon increased the zero-equilibrium phosphorus concentration (EPC₀) of the sediment but LMZ addition could lower the EPC₀ and reduce the risk of phosphorus release during the algal blooming season. In the presence of sediment, LMZ reduced the DIP concentration more rapidly and yielded a lower final DIP concentration compared with algae. In conclusion, the influence of algae on the performance of LMZ by (i) taking up DIP to reduce the availability of DIP and convert DIP into a releasable phosphorus form and (ii) increasing the pH and dissolved organic carbon concentration to hinder the adsorption ability of DIP were recognized. The LMZ performed well, even in the presence of algae.

Laboratory experiments with intact sediment cores from a hypertrophic very windy exposed shallow lake were conducted to assess the combined effect of anoxia and sediment resuspension on phosphorus (P) dynamics after adding different P adsorbents (CFH-12® and Phoslock®). In this study we hypothesize that the addition of geoengineering materials will increase P retention in the sediment even at the worst physic-chemical conditions such as anoxia and sediment resuspension. Both adsorbents significantly reduced the P release from the sediments after a 54 days-anoxic incubation period (CFH-12® by 85% and Phoslock® by 98%) and even after resuspension events (CFH-12® by 84% and Phoslock® by 88%), indicating that both adsorbents are suitable P inactivating agents for restoring shallow eutrophicated lakes under such circumstances. CFH-12® did not release dissolved Fe to the water column neither after the anoxic period nor after resuspension events compared to Control (no adsorbents addition). The La concentration was significantly higher in Phoslock® (3.5–5.7 μg L⁻¹) than in Control at all sampling days but it was not affected by resuspension. The high efficiency in P removal under anoxia and resuspension, the low risk of toxicity and the high maximum adsorption capacity makes CFH-12® a promising adsorbent for lake restoration. Nevertheless, further research about the influence of other factors (i.e. pH, alkalinity, interfering substances or strict anoxia) on the performance of CFH-12® is needed.

Transient storage model (TSM) is the most popular model for simulating solutes transport in natural streams. Accurate estimate of TSM parameters is essential in many hydraulic and environmental problems. In this study, an improved version of high-level Moth-Swarm Algorithm (IMSA) was used to predict the TSM parameters. First, the performance of the improved model was successfully assessed through several benchmark functions. Next, a series of 58 measured hydraulic and geometric datasets was used to validate the model. The data were divided into two series randomly, 38 datasets were selected for derivation and the remaining 20 datasets were used to verification. Then the results of IMSA were compared with other algorithms proposed by previous researchers. Two statistical indices of root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of correlation (CC) were employed to evaluate the performance of the model. The results showed that despite the high complexity and uncertainty associated with the dispersion processes, the IMSA algorithm could accurately predict the TSM parameters.
