Characterization and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds based on 1-year of observational data in Tianjin, China

From November 2014 to October 2015, the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), O3 and NOx were simultaneously monitored by using online instruments at the air monitoring station belonged to Tianjin Environmental Protection Bureau (TEPB). The results indicated that VOCs concentrations were higher in autumn and lower in spring, while O3 concentrations were higher in summer, and lower in winter. The diurnal variations of VOCs and NOx (NO2 plus NO) showed opposite tendency comparing to that of O3. The concentrations of alkanes were higher (the average of 18.2 ppbv) than that of aromatics (5.3 ppbv) and alkenes (5.2 ppbv), however, the alkenes and aromatics made larger contributions to ozone because of their high reactivity. Tianjin belonged to the VOC-limited region during most of seasons (except summer) according to the VOC/NOx ratios (the 8:1 threshold). The automobile exhaust, industrial emission, liquefied petroleum gas/natural gas (LPG/NG), combustion, gasoline evaporation, internal combustion engine emission and solvent usage were identified as major sources of VOCs by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model in Tianjin, and the contributions to VOCs for the entire year were 23.1%, 19.9%, 18.6%, 10.6%, 8.7%, 5.4% and 4.7%, respectively. The conditional probability function (CPF) analysis indicated that the contributing directions of automobile exhaust and industrial emission were mainly affected by source distributions, and that of other sources might be mainly affected by wind direction. The backward trajectory analysis indicated that the trajectory of air mass originated from Mongolia, which reflected the features of large-scale and long-distance air transport, and that of beginning in Jiangsu, Shandong and Tianjin, which showed the features of small-scale and short-distance. Tianjin, Beijing, Hebei and Northwest of Shandong were identified as major potential source-areas of VOCs by using potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) models.

With the development of society and the economy, many Chinese cities are shrouded in pollution haze for much of the year. Scientific studies have identified various adverse effects of air pollutants on human beings. However, the relationships between air pollution and blood lipid levels are still unclear. The objective of this study is to explore the short and long-term effects of air pollution on eight blood lipid markers among elderly hypertension inpatients complicated with or without type 2 diabetes (T2D). Blood lipid markers which met the pre-established inclusion criteria were exported from the medical record system. Air pollution data were acquired from the official environmental protection website. Associations between the air quality index and the blood lipid indexes were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and further Bonferroni correction. In an exposure time of 7 days or longer, blood lipid markers were somewhat affected by poor air quality. However, the results could not predict whether atherosclerosis would be promoted or inhibited by poorer air condition. Changes of blood lipid markers of hypertension inpatients with or without T2D were not completely the same, but no blood lipid markers had an opposite trend between the two populations. The air quality index was associated with changes to blood lipid markers to some extent in a population of hypertension inpatients with or without T2D. Further studies are needed to investigate the potential mechanism by which air pollutants induce blood lipids changes.

Different studies have proved that enhancing public Ocean Environmental Awareness (OEA) will lead to increased public support for ocean environmental protection. Our study develops a questionnaire to investigate current levels of students’ OEA from three aspects including ocean environmental concerns, ocean environment knowledge and willingness to participate in ocean related activities. This questionnaire was applied to students from Xiamen University to understand the OEA of university students in China, of which there are few studies. Using data gathered from a random purposive sample, the OEA level of students in Xiamen University was investigated and then the influencing factors (education, geographical situation, age and gender etc.) were further analyzed. Findings suggest that most students are concerned about the ocean environment but their knowledge is not enough that makes the willingness to participate in ocean related actions limited as well. The results show there is an urgent need to improve students’ OEA.

This paper reports the results of an assessment of contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in two demersal species of commercial importance. The organisms considered were Mullus barbatus and Engraulis encrasicolus from three marine areas off the Italian coasts: North and South Adriatic Sea and North Tyrrhenian Sea. The instrumental analyzes have revealed, in many samples examined, the presence of most of PCB congeners and 5 of the 16 PAHs considered. Organisms caught in the waters of Apulia have greater contamination values, while the samples from Tuscany showed the lowest ones, results probably referable to the environmental quality differences between the areas of origin, at least for PAHs, since the sampling areas are represented respectively by areas with presence of oil extraction plant (Adriatic), and by an area subject to environmental protection.

This study investigated ambient concentrations and potential sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in surface sediments from the Zhoushan Archipelago and adjacent Xiangshan Harbor. The ∑18PCB (total 18 PCB) concentrations ranged between 1.48 and 7.94ng/g d.w., average at 4.20ng/g d.w., presenting a low adverse environmental risk. Penta-CB was the dominant congener, contributing 46.01%–86.44% of the total PCBs. Concentrations of PCBs were highest in the northeastern part of the Zhoushan Archipelago and Xiangshan Harbor. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that PCBs have a mixed origin; atmospheric deposition and PCB dispersion from paint flakings being the main sources of PCB pollution. Aroclor 1245 and Clophen A50 were the potential PCB sources in all sampling sites. This paper provides the first intensive survey and statistical analyses of PCB distributions and sources in the Zhoushan Archipelago and adjacent Xiangshan Harbor. This study may provide a reference to environmental protection and monitoring of PCB pollution in the East China Sea.

Many recreational beaches suffer from elevated levels of microorganisms, resulting in beach advisories and closures due to lack of compliance with Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. We conducted the first statewide beach water quality assessment by analyzing decadal records of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci and fecal coliform) levels at 262 Florida beaches. The objectives were to depict synoptic patterns of beach water quality exceedance along the entire Florida shoreline and to evaluate their relationships with wave condition and geographic location. Percent exceedances based on enterococci and fecal coliform were negatively correlated with both long-term mean wave energy and beach slope. Also, Gulf of Mexico beaches exceeded the thresholds significantly more than Atlantic Ocean ones, perhaps partially due to the lower wave energy. A possible linkage between wave energy level and water quality is beach sand, a pervasive nonpoint source that tends to harbor more bacteria in the low-wave-energy environment.

This study characterizes a biotensoactive produced by the bacterium Azospirillum lipoferum, which was isolated from the rhizospheres of contaminated plants with oil in the lower basin of the Tonala River, Villa Benito Juarez, municipality of Cardenas, Tabasco, Mexico. The following properties were analyzed: viscosity at 25 °C, elemental analysis (% mol) by scanning electron microscopy, density at different temperatures, molecular weight, acute toxicity, median lethal concentration (LC₅₀), and saponification and acidity indices. The effects of pH (6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0) and temperature (25, 30, 35, and 40 °C) on the production of the biotensoactive and the effect of NaCl on the surface tension, density, and emulsifying capacity were studied. The results showed that the viscosity remained stable between 1.0914 and 1.1276 mPa-s, so the biotensoactive was classified as low-molecular weight. Toxic effects on the population of Eisenia foetida began at surfactant concentrations above 55,000 ppm, and the LC₅₀ was 96,695 ppm. The highest yield of biotensoactive production was obtained 48 h after the beginning of the treatment at pH 8 and pH 9 and 25 °C. At 25 °C, the surface tension ranged from 44.60 mN/m at a 1 % concentration by weight of NaCl to 51.11 mN/m at 15 % NaCl, while at 60 °C, the surface tension ranged from 34.90 mN/m at 1 % NaCl to 40.22 mN/m at 15 % NaCl. The emulsifying capacity was 70 % (aqueous solution 15 % NaCl).

TiO₂-graphene (TiO₂-GR) composites were successfully prepared by a two-step solvothermal method using titanium dioxide and natural graphite powder. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that graphene oxide (GO) was prepared from natural flake graphite by a modified hydrothermal pressurized oxidation method. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved that TiO₂-GR composites were synthesized during the process of hydrothermal reaction while GO was changed into graphene. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrated that TiO₂ particles contacted closely with graphene via Ti–O–C bonds. The results of Raman spectra confirmed the existence of graphene in the TiO₂-GR composite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that TiO₂ particles were oval and grafted on the graphene sheet which was smooth with ripples. UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra demonstrated that there was a red shift in the absorption edge of TiO₂-GR composite. The experimental results indicated that the TiO₂-GR composite had significantly adsorption-photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dyes. The adsorption capacity (q ₘₐₓ) of TiO₂-6%GR-4h for MB was 41.32 mg ⋅ g⁻ ¹ calculated based on the Langmuir adsorption model, which was about 3.3 times the adsorption capacity of TiO₂. Adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption process fit well with the pseudo-second-order model. It proved that the TiO₂-GR composites were more efficient than the pure TiO₂ in the field of environmental protection.

This paper studies the relationship among carbon emissions, GDP, and logistics by using a panel data model and a combination of statistics and econometrics theory. The model is based on the historical data of 10 typical provinces and cities in China during 2005–2014. The model in this paper adds the variability of logistics on the basis of previous studies, and this variable is replaced by the freight turnover of the provinces. Carbon emissions are calculated by using the annual consumption of coal, oil, and natural gas. GDP is the gross domestic product. The results showed that the amount of logistics and GDP have a contribution to carbon emissions and the long-term relationships are different between different cities in China, mainly influenced by the difference among development mode, economic structure, and level of logistic development. After the testing of panel model setting, this paper established a variable coefficient model of the panel. The influence of GDP and logistics on carbon emissions is obtained according to the influence factors among the variables. The paper concludes with main findings and provides recommendations toward rational planning of urban sustainable development and environmental protection for China.

There is no doubt that air pollutants have adverse impacts on human health. The main objective of this study was to evaluate hospital admission respiratory disease (HARD) attributed to sulfur dioxide levels in Ahvaz during three successive years. Data was taken from Iranian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The AirQ2,2,3 model is used to quantify the impact of SO₂ on inhabitants of Ahvaz and in terms of hospital admission respiratory diseases. This is a kind of statistical model which is based on some epidemiological indices such as relative risk, baseline incidence, and attributable proportion. Sampling was already performed for 24 h in four stations during 2011–2013. Four stations are good representative for residential, high traffic, industry, and background sites which cover the whole area of the Ahvaz city. Regarding to gravimetric scale, raw data of sulfur dioxide was processed using Excel software. Encoding, filtering, and processing were conducted to prepare input file for the Air Q₂,₂,₃ model. After running model, outputs presented in term of hospital admissions respiratory cases. Based on our result, the highest mean and maximum of seasonal and annual levels for sulfur dioxide were observed in 2013. We concluded that obnoxious quality of fuel and some deficiencies in maintenance and operation of industries lead to worse quality of ambient air especially in 2013. Cumulative cases of HARD attributed to sulfur dioxide level at central of relative risk (RR) were estimated 24, 25, and 30 persons for 2011, 2012, and 2013, respectively. The finding of this study showed that total mean of sulfur dioxide was higher than standard concentration. We also noticed that wintertime concentrations of sulfur dioxide during three successive years were higher than of those levels in summer.
