Nano silver and nano zinc-oxide monthly concentrations in surface waters across Europe were modeled at ∼6 × 9 km spatial resolution. Nano-particle loadings from households to rivers were simulated considering household connectivity to sewerage, sewage treatment efficiency, the spatial distribution of sewage treatment plants, and their associated populations. These loadings were used to model temporally varying nano-particle concentrations in rivers, lakes and wetlands by considering dilution, downstream transport, water evaporation, water abstraction, and nano-particle sedimentation. Temporal variability in concentrations caused by weather variation was simulated using monthly weather data for a representative 31-year period. Modeled concentrations represent current levels of nano-particle production. Two scenarios were modeled. In the most likely scenario, half the river stretches had long-term average concentrations exceeding 0.002 ng L−1 nano silver and 1.5 ng L−1 nano zinc oxide. In 10% of the river stretches, these concentrations exceeded 0.18 ng L−1 and 150 ng L−1, respectively. Predicted concentrations were usually highest in July.

The rice canopy in paddy fields can influence the air–soil exchange of organic chemicals. We used paired passive air samplers to assess the exchange of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in a paddy field, South China. Levels of OCPs and light PAHs were generally higher under the canopy than above it. We found that the rice canopy can physically obstruct the evaporation of most OCPs and light PAHs, and can also act as a barrier to the gaseous deposition of p,p'-DDT and heavy PAHs. Paddy fields can behave as a secondary source of OCPs and light PAHs. The homolog patterns of these two types of chemical varied slightly between the air below and above the rice canopy, implying contributions of different sources. Paired passive air samplers can be used effectively to assess the in situ air–soil exchange of PAHs and OCPs in subtropical paddy fields.

The decline of groundwater table and deterioration of water quality related to seawater have long been regarded as a crucial problem in coastal regions. In this work, a hydrogeologic investigation using combined hydrochemical and isotopic approaches was conducted in the coastal region of the South China Sea near the Leizhou peninsular to provide primary insight into seawater intrusion and groundwater circulation. Hydrochemical and isotopic data show that local groundwater is subjected to anthropogenic activities and geochemical processes, such as evaporation, water–rock interaction, and ion exchange. However, seawater intrusion driven by the over-exploitation of groundwater and insufficient recharge is the predominant factor controlling groundwater salinization. Systematic and homologic isotopic characteristics of most samples suggest that groundwater in volcanic area is locally recharged and likely caused by modern precipitation. However, very depleted stable isotopes and extremely low tritium of groundwater in some isolated aquifers imply a dominant role of palaeowater.

A 3-D prognostic baroclinic hydrodynamic model of the Arabian Gulf (AG) was developed using Delft3D-FLOW. The model was forced with long-term time averaged climatological data over the computational domain and long-term salinity and temperature boundary conditions applied at its tidal open boundary. The model simulation results were thoroughly validated against measured tides from 5 stations and measured currents at 4 locations in the central and southern parts. Water salinity and temperature were validated in space and time using observations spanning over 73years from 1923 to 1996 for the AG, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. The bottom flow of the AG basin at the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz was also validated against the available measurements. Seasonal evaporation and surface density spatial distribution maps were produced and compared with available records. The developed model setup successfully generated the AG seasonal stratification and hydrographic conditions.

This work gives an assessment of the hazard faced by Sicily coasts regarding potential offshore surface oil spill events and provides a risk assessment for Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Areas (SPA). A lagrangian module, coupled with a high resolution finite element three dimensional hydrodynamic model, was used to track the ensemble of a large number of surface trajectories followed by particles released over 6 selected areas located inside the Sicily Channel. The analysis was carried out under multiple scenarios of meteorological conditions. Oil evaporation, oil weathering, and shore stranding are also considered. Seasonal hazard maps for different stranding times and seasonal risk maps were then produced for the whole Sicilian coastline. The results highlight that depending on the meteo-marine conditions, particles can reach different areas of the Sicily coast, including its northern side, and illustrate how impacts can be greatly reduced through prompt implementation of mitigation strategies.

Soil salinization is a worldwide problem of which secondary salinization is increasingly more frequent, threatening agricultural production. Salt accumulation affects not only plants but also the physio-chemical characteristics of the soil, limiting its potential use. Climate change will further increase the rate of salinization of soil and groundwater as it leads to increased evaporation, promotes capillary rise of saline groundwater as well as increased irrigation with brackish water. Episodic seawater inundation of coastal areas is likely to increase in frequency as well. This work analyzed three types of salinization: seawater inundation (by irrigating soils with a 54 dS m⁻¹NaCl solution), saline groundwater capillary rise (soil contact with a 27 dS m⁻¹NaCl solution), and irrigation with two types of brackish water with different residual sodium carbonate (RSC). Two soils were used: a mineral soil (7.0 % clay; 0.7 % organic matter) and an organic soil (2.7 % clay; 7.4 % organic matter). The tested soils had different resilience to salinization: The mineral soil had higher sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) due to low levels of calcium + magnesium but had higher leaching efficiency and more limited effects of RSC. The organic soil however was more prone to capillary rise but seemingly more structurally stable. Our results suggest that short-term inundation with seawater can be mitigated by leaching although soil structure may be affected and that capillary rise of brackish groundwater should be carefully monitored. Also, the impact of irrigation with brackish water with high RSC can be inferior in soils with higher exchangeable acidity.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can alter the dynamics of soluble nitrogen in paddy field soils by promoting nitrogen assimilation by rice. However, it is unknown whether this affects N₂O emissions from rice paddies. This study was designed to assess the effects of AMF on N₂O emissions by analyzing the relationships between AMF and the parameters affecting N₂O emissions. Path analysis was used to quantitatively partition the direct and indirect effects of different parameters on N₂O emissions. Results showed that N₂O emissions were controlled by environmental pathways (transpiration, evaporation, and precipitation affecting soil water content) and biotic pathways (soluble nitrogen assimilation by the rice, which varies according to rice biomass). Under different water conditions, the contributions of the two pathways to N₂O emissions varied strongly. During the flooding stage, the environmental pathways were dominant, but inoculation with AMF promoted the contribution of the biotic pathway to the reduction of N₂O emissions. During the draining stage, the environmental pathways were dominant in the non-inoculated treatment, but inoculation made the biotic pathways dominant by increasing the biomass of rice. During the growing stage, N₂O emissions from inoculated soil (17.9–492.9 μg N₂O-N m⁻² h⁻¹) were significantly lower than those in non-inoculated soil (22.1–553.1 μg N₂O-N m⁻² h⁻¹; p < 0.05). Consequently, inoculating with AMF has the potential for mitigating N₂O emissions from rice paddies.

Mercury (Hg) in aquatic ecosystems is of great concern due to its toxicity, bioaccumulation, and magnification in the food web. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is endowed with the highest and largest lakes on earth, whereas Hg distribution and behavior in lake waters are least known. In this study, surface water samples from 38 lakes over the TP were collected and determined for the total Hg (THg) concentrations. Results revealed a wide range of THg concentrations from <1 ng to 40.3 ng L⁻¹. THg in lake waters exhibited an increasing trend along the southeast to northwest transect over the TP. Strong positive correlations were observed between THg concentrations and salinity and salinity-related environmental variables, especially for total dissolved solids (TDS) and some of the major ions such as Na⁺, K⁺, and Cl⁻, suggesting the enrichment of Hg in saline lakes. The large-scale geographical pattern of climatic and environmental factors shows a decreasing precipitation and an increasing evaporation northwards and westwards and thereby induces gradient-enhanced enrichment of soluble substances in lake waters, which are likely to complex more Hg in northwestern TP. Our study provides the first comprehensive baseline data set of Hg in Tibetan lake waters and highlights the concurrent high Hg and salinity, representing valuable references and fundamental rules in further understanding the behavior and fate of Hg in lakes over the TP and perhaps high-altitude regions beyond.

This study assessed the suitability of passive sampler extracts for use with a GC-MS-database rapid screening technique for around 940 organic chemicals. Chemcatcher™ passive sampler systems containing either Empore™ SDB-XC or C18FF disks were deployed at 21 riverine sites in and near Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, for a period of 28 days during September–October 2008. Methanolic elution of the SDB-XC and C18FF disks produced an extract that, after evaporation and inversion into hexane, was compatible with the GC-MS-database method enabling over 30 chemicals to be observed. The sources of the non-agricultural chemicals are still unclear, but this study was conducted in a relatively dry season where total rainfall was approximately 40 % lower than the long-term mean for the catchment during the study period. Thus, the risks may be greater in wetter seasons, as greater quantities of chemicals are likely to reach waterways as the frequency, extent and intensity of surface run-off events increase. This study provides valuable information for policy and decision-makers, both in Australia and other regions of the world, in that passive sampling can be conveniently used prior to analysis by multi-residue techniques to produce data to assess the likely risks trace organic chemicals pose to aquatic ecosystems.

In this study, the concentrations of volatile organic compounds were measured by the use of proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry, together with NO ₓ , NO, NO₂, SO₂, CO and PM₁₀ and meteorological parameters in an urban area of Belgrade during winter 2014. The multivariate receptor model US EPA Unmix was applied to the obtained dataset resolving six source profiles, which can be attributed to traffic-related emissions, gasoline evaporation/oil refineries, petrochemical industry/biogenic emissions, aged plumes, solid-fuel burning and local laboratories. Besides the vehicle exhaust, accounting for 27.6 % of the total mixing ratios, industrial emissions, which are present in three out of six resolved profiles, exert a significant impact on air quality in the urban area. The major contribution of regional and long-range transport was determined for source profiles associated with petrochemical industry/biogenic emissions (40 %) and gasoline evaporation/oil refineries (29 %) using trajectory sector analysis. The concentration-weighted trajectory model was applied with the aim of resolving the spatial distribution of potential distant sources, and the results indicated that emission sources from neighbouring countries, as well as from Slovakia, Greece, Poland and Scandinavian countries, significantly contribute to the observed concentrations.
