Assessment of exceedance of critical levels for ozone in Slovak forest ecosystems

For assessment of ozone risks to forests we used ozone thresholds and air quality guidelines set by several international organizations for protection of vegetation. We also used spatial modelling for estimation of basic ozone characteristics. Calculations of models were performed in the environment of the programme Idrisi 32. The spatial coverage of ozone monitoring network in the Slovak Republic has insufficient density. Ozone data come from two sources; SHMI/EMEP database of ozone concentrations from 4 monitoring stations and ozone database of FRI from 3 monitoring stations

The aim of the experiment was to find out the influence of various thinning regimes on health condition of young stands of Norway spruce under the stress of air pollution. The experiment is based on comparative method. The series consists of three comparative plots with different thinning regimes. The comparative plot 1 is a control plot without thinning. The program with heavy thinning from below has been tested on the plot 2 and the program based on one very heavy thinning in the young age and longer periods was applied in the stands of plots 3. Ectomycorrhizal types were quantified in soil cores taken from 0-5 cm horizon. Nine ectomycorrhizal types were distinguished on roots of pines grown close to the copper smelter, 17 on trees grown in vicinity of aluminium smelter versus 25 found on trees grown near phosphate fertilizer plant and from control trees. The main aims of the preparatory stands in air pollution areas are growth development, successfull dynamics of the plants and fast creation of the stand microclimate with favourable effect on soil conditions. This process is documented by height and diameter increment. The results confirm different growth dynamics of the particular species. Larch is the species with the best growth dynamics of selected species on experimental plots. On the other hand, beech is the worst species for reforestation in this condition. Wildfires are a complex environmental problem worldwide. The ashes produced during the fire bear metals and PAHs with high toxicity and environmental persistence. These are mobilized into downhill waterbodies, where they can impair water quality and human health. In this context, the present study aimed at assessing the toxicity of mimicked wildfire runoff to human skin cells, providing a first view on the human health hazardous potential of such matrices. Human keratinocytes (HaCaT) were exposed to aqueous extracts of ashes (AEA) prepared from ash deposited in the soil after wildfires burned a pine or a eucalypt forest stand. Cytotoxicity (MTT assay) and changes in cell cycle dynamics (flow cytometry) were assessed. Cell viability decreased with increasing concentrations of AEA, regardless of the ash source, the extracts preparation method (filtered or unfiltered to address the dissolved or the total fractions of contaminants, respectively) or the exposure period (24 and 48 h). The cells growth was also negatively affected by the tested AEA matrices, as evidenced by a deceleration of the progress through the cell cycle, namely from phase G0/G1 to G2. The cytotoxicity of AEA could be related to particulate and dissolved metal content, but the particles themselves may directly affect the cell membrane. Eucalypt ash was apparently more cytotoxic than pine ash due to differential ash metal burden and mobility to the water phase. The deceleration of the cell cycle can be explained by the attempt of cells to repair metal-induced DNA damage, while if this checkpoint and repair pathways are not well coordinated by metal interference, genomic instability may occur. Globally, our results trigger public health concerns since the burnt areas frequently stand in slopes of watershed that serve as recreation sites and sources of drinking water, thus promoting human exposure to wildfire-driven contamination.

Urbanization usually pollutes the environment leading to alterations in key biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, understanding its effects on forest nitrogen (N) saturation is becoming increasingly important for addressing N pollution challenges in urban ecosystems. In this study, we compared soil (N availability, net N mineralization, net nitrification, and δ¹⁵N) and foliar (N concentrations and δ¹⁵N) variables in upstream, midstream and downstream forest stands of Bailongjiang River (BJR; more urbanized) and Wulongjiang River (WJR; less urbanized), the two branches of the Minjiang River Estuary. Total soil N, ammonium, nitrate, net N mineralization and nitrification rates, as well as soil δ¹⁵N were significantly higher in BJR compared with WJR forest stands. While no substantial difference in foliar N concentrations was noted between rivers, foliar δ¹⁵N was on average more than 2.5 times higher in BJR than WJR forest stands. Across the study area, foliar δ¹⁵N was positively related to soil δ¹⁵N, which also had positive linear relationships with soil nitrate concentrations, net N mineralization and net nitrification rates. Moreover, all variables except foliar δ¹⁵N and ammonium concentrations showed decreasing patterns in the order: upstream > midstream > downstream along the BJR forest stands. Soil ammonium and foliar values (N concentrations and δ¹⁵N) revealed clear patterns along the WJR, with the former increasing and the latter decreasing from the upstream to downstream forest stands. Our findings indicate an increase in urbanization-induced N inputs from the WJR to BJR and that forest stands along the BJR especially at the upstream have higher N availability and are shifting rapidly towards N saturation state. These results emphasize the need for effective N pollution control in urban environments through sustainable urban planning.

Samples of 474 forest stands in Germany were analysed for concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in three sampling depths. Enhanced concentrations were mainly found at spots relatively close to densely industrialized and urbanized regions and at some topographically elevated areas. Average enrichment factors between mineral soil and humic layer depend on humus type i.e. decrease from mull via moder to mor. Based on their compound-patterns, the observed samples could be assigned to three main clusters. For some parts of our study area a uniform assignment of samples to clusters over larger regions could be identified. For instance, samples taken at vicinity to brown-coal strip-mining districts are characterized by high relative abundances of low-molecular-weight PAHs. These results suggest that PAHs are more likely originated from local and regional emitters rather than from long-range transport and that specific source-regions can be identified based on PAH fingerprints.

The present study investigated the changes of δ15N values in the tip, middle and base section (divided by the proportion to needle length) of current- and previous-year needles of Masson pine (Pinus massoniana L.) from two declining forest stands suffering from air pollution, in comparison with one healthy stand. At the healthy stand, δ15N in the three sections of both current- and previous-year needles were found evenly distributed, while at the polluted stands, δ15N values in the needles were revealed significantly different from the tip to the base sections. The results implied that the distribution of δ15N among different parts or sections in foliages was not always homogeneous and could be affected by air pollution. We suggested that the difference of δ15N values among pine needle sections should be reconsidered and should not be primarily ignored when the needle δ15N values were used to assess plant responses to air pollution.

Fertilization plays an essential role in forest management on the site being under air pollution load in last years. The soil acidity due to the acid fall-out is markedly worse and at the same time the concentration of calcium, phosphorous, potassium and magnesium are decreasing. The fertilization besides positive influence on height increment could help in adaptation process of plants establishment after transplanting and it can eliminate negative ifluence of anthropogenic conditions of the environmnet

Taking into account the results of environmental monitoring in forest ecosystems (European Level I- and II-Programme) showing high degrees of soil acidification and still a widespread exceedance of critical loads by deposited sulphur and nitrogen compounds, the programme of differentiated forest protection liming should continue with site specific doses. On the other hand the programme to restore forest ecosystems with higher stability and to a large extent balanced nutrient cycles has to be carried out in order to minimize internal acid-generating processes
