The environmental contaminant tributyltin leads to abnormalities in different levels of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis in female rats

Tributyltin is a biocide used in nautical paints, aiming to reduce fouling of barnacles in ships. Despite the fact that many effects of TBT on marine species are known, studies in mammals have been limited, especially those evaluating its effect on the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of subchronic exposure to TBT on the HPT axis in female rats. Female Wistar rats received vehicle, TBT 200 ng kg−1 BW d−1 or 1000 ng kg−1 BW d−1 orally by gavage for 40 d. Hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, liver and blood samples were collected. TBT200 and TBT1000 thyroids showed vacuolated follicular cells, with follicular hypertrophy and hyperplasia. An increase in epithelial height and a decrease in the thyroid follicle and colloid area were observed in TBT1000 rats. Moreover, an increase in the epithelium/colloid area ratio was observed in both TBT groups. Lower TRH mRNA expression was observed in the hypothalami of TBT200 and TBT1000 rats. An increase in Dio1 mRNA levels was observed in the hypothalamus and thyroid in TBT1000 rats only. TSH serum levels were increased in TBT200 rats. In TBT1000 rats, there was a decrease in total T4 serum levels compared to control rats, whereas T3 serum levels did not show significant alterations. We conclude that TBT exposure can promote critical abnormalities in the HPT axis, including changes in TRH mRNA expression and serum TSH and T4 levels, in addition to affecting thyroid morphology. These findings demonstrate that TBT disrupts the HPT axis. Additionally, the changes found in thyroid hormones suggest that TBT may interfere with the peripheral metabolism of these hormones, an idea corroborated by the observed changes in Dio1 mRNA levels. Therefore, TBT exposition might interfere not only with the thyroid axis but also with thyroid hormone metabolism.

Animal manure is often anaerobically digested for the purpose of producing biogas. The digested manure, namely digestate, can be applied onto farmlands to enhance crop yields as it is abundant in nutrients. However, intensive livestock farming brings about manure exceeding the carrying capacity of lands nearby. Technologies focused on nutrient recovery from digestate have been studied recently, while many problems and challenges still remain unsolved. In this article, these recovery technologies are reviewed and compared, and challenges are deliberated. Ammonia stripping and struvite formation are easily operated technologies in comparison with membrane technologies. Amongst membrane technologies, electrodialysis reversal and forward osmosis are promising due to their high resistance to membrane fouling. Further studies should be focused on the operational cost, disposal of solid and liquid residuals and marketization of the recovered products.

Marine anthropogenic debris was sampled from two beaches on the remote South Pacific island Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Abundance, composition, and the attached fouling assemblages on stranded litter were analysed. Most litter (n = 172 items found) was composed of plastic material, and 34% of all litter items were fouled. The main fouling species was the encrusting bryozoan Jellyella eburnea. Transporting vectors were exclusively made from plastics and were mainly small items and fragments, probably stemming from the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre. We present the first report of Planes major, Halobates sericeus, and Pocillopora sp. on anthropogenic litter in the South Pacific.

Inappropriate disposal of plastic debris has led to the contamination of marine habitats worldwide. This debris can be ingested by organisms; however, the extent to which chewing and gut transit modifies plastic debris is unclear. Detritivores, such as amphipods, ingest and shred natural organic matter and are fundamental to its breakdown. Here we examine ingestion and shredding of plastic carrier bags by Orchestia gammarellus. A laboratory experiment showed these amphipods shredded plastic carrier bags, generating numerous microplastic fragments (average diameter 488.59μm). The presence of a biofilm significantly increased the amount of shredding, but plastic type (conventional, degradable and biodegradable) had no effect. Subsequent field observations confirmed similar shredding occurred on the strandline. Rates of shredding will vary according to amphipod density; however, our data indicates that shredding by organisms could substantially accelerate the formation microplastics in the environment.

Urban structures like marinas are dominant features of our coasts, often hotspots for invasive species. The processes that govern the distribution of invasive species within and between marinas are not well understood. We therefore investigated the impacts of local-scale variability within and between marinas, analysing fouling communities at two zones (inner and outer) within three close marinas in accordance with pollutants recorded in the water and sediment. Communities varied between zones, however no significant differences in abundances of invasive species was recorded. The inner zones contained higher levels of copper and other pollutants and were correlated with lower biodiversity and abundances of many species in comparison to the outer zones. Only the native Ascidiella aspersa was found in greater abundances in the inner zones. This local-scale variability and how it impacts biodiversity is important for consideration for coastal managers in mitigating the build-up of pollutants and spread of invasive species.

A tropical coastal power plant with a once-through cooling system that pumped sea water along with tiny marine phytoplankton and zooplankton for waste heat discharge recorded reduction in the population density of these organisms by 64% and 93%, respectively, at the discharge site. The depletion of organic carbon is 0.69 tons per annum with loss of 20 to 24 lakhs fish fecundity. The synergistic effect of tropical summer ambiance and waste heat discharge from the power plant considerably reduced the phytoplankton population in the coolant water discharge point during April, June, and July. This resulted in changes in the phytoplankton community structure from Bacillariophyceae > Dyanophyceae > Cyanophyceae to Bacillariophyceae > Cyanophyceae > Dyanophyceae in the Ennore creek system. A unique epibiotic assemblage of the diatoms Licmophora juergensii and Licmophora flabellata was observed on Phormidium sp., a mat-forming Cyanobacterium preharbored along the 4.5-km-long transport channel of the cooling tower blow out of the thermal power plant. These pedunculate fouling diatoms have a symbiotic association with Phormidium sp., which grows few microns high above the substrate, thus creating obstructive flow in cooling water channels of the power plant. Further, loss of fish larvae during zooplankton population reduction creates an impact on the local fishery. However, the emerging scenario of global warming predicts that the migration of fish population toward cooler regions shall further aggravate the fishery reduction near the power plant cooling operation along the tropical coasts. The marine organisms living in tropical coastal waters operated at upper limits of thermal tolerance produce a demand for the regulatory bodies in India to enforce a drop in discharge criteria for coolant water, with the pre-existing power stations permitted to discharge up to 10 °C above the ambient temperature and newer power stations permitted to discharge a maximum of 7 °C. It becomes a requisite for power stations to draw additional seawater along with the plankton. Therefore, an emerging technology of subsurface intake systems called beachwell that resolves the issue of coolant water intake without biota was advocated.

Bryozoa is a phylum of aquatic invertebrates widely distributed around the world, including harbor areas. They have association to artificial structures as main mechanism of dispersal, including ships, which facilitates their introduction to new environments. The detection of exotic species is important to prevent new introductions and to propose management strategies of marine areas. Thus, after analyzing and discussing local and global criteria of exotic species, an account of exotic bryozoans from Brazil is presented, including 12 classified as exotic (six established and six detected) and 17 classified as potentially exotic (cryptogenic). Three species have been reported causing economic or environmental impacts worldwide. Of those, Membraniporopsis tubigera is known to cause economic impacts on the Brazilian coast. Hull fouling is the main dispersal mechanism for exotic bryozoans. The lacking of reliable data did not allow inferring on the exotic status on some fouling bryozoan species in Brazil.

Osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), which integrates forward osmosis (FO) with biological treatment process, has been recently developed to advance wastewater treatment and reuse. During OMBR operation, driven by osmotic pressure gradient, biologically treated water transports from the mixed liquor, through a semi-permeable FO membrane, into a highly concentrated draw solution. Compared to conventional MBR, OMBR has several advantages, including better product water quality, lower fouling propensity, and higher fouling reversibility. OMBR can be operated in the osmotic dilution mode when the draw solution, such as liquid fertilizers or seawater, can be reused or discharged directly. In most cases, OMBR is integrated with an additional process, commonly including reverse osmosis, membrane distillation, and electrodialysis, to form hybrid systems for sustainably reconcentrating draw solutions and producing clean water for reuse. In addition, several membrane processes, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and electrodialysis, are combined with OMBR to address its inherent issue, salinity build-up in the bioreactor, and achieve resource (e.g., nutrients and energy) recovery. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding on the performance of OMBR and its hybrid systems in wastewater reuse and resource recovery. OMBR analogs and their performance are also systematically introduced. Key technical challenges and their potential solutions to the further development of OMBR and its hybrid systems are highlighted. This review sheds light on future research for the further development of OMBR and its hybrid systems.

The performance of spinning basket membrane (SBM) module was tested for the separation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) from wastewater. The SBM performance was examined using 50 kDa polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane under different parametric conditions. Also, the effects of rotational speed and transmembrane pressure on permeate flux and PVA rejection were investigated. The rotational speed played a significant role in decreasing membrane fouling by reducing the particle deposition on the membrane surface due to enhanced turbulence and shear force. Also, the in-built hydrodynamic cleaning facility of the SBM module allowed easy cleaning of the membrane. The steady-state value of percentage rejection of PVA was above 90% when the steady-state permeate flux value was above 54% of its initial value. The results suggested that spinning basket membrane module was efficient as well as economical for the separation of PVA from aqueous solution.

The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) possesses high fouling potential and has caused damage to various productive sectors. These individuals do not present known natural enemies, but they may be part of the feeding of one or more species of fish, which would help in their control. The main species of fish cultivated in cages in the Itaipu reservoir is pacu (mesopotamicus), and other species have also been evaluated in relation to intensive production viability such as jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) and curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus). One of the problems faced in the net cages system in the Itaipu reservoir is the inlaying of the golden mussel in the cage’s mesh, making it difficult to handle, requiring more maintenance and reducing the service life of the net cages. This paper aims at evaluate the presence of L. fortunei in the digestive tract of three native species of fish cultivated in cages in the Itaipu reservoir. L. fortunei were present in the gastrointestinal tract of pacus and jundiás, and there was no L. fortunei in curimbatás. It is possible to conclude that for the three species studied, only jundiá and pacu have the capacity to consume and to control the L. fortunei embedded in the mesh of the net cages.
