In the last few decades, Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) have taken significant roles in creating harmful effects to aquatic organisms. Many proposed treatment applications are time consuming, expensive and focus mainly on waste water treatment plants (WWTP), which are indeed a major aquatic polluting source. Nonetheless, the marine environment is the ultimate sink of many pollutants, e.g. EDCs, and has been largely neglected mainly due to the challenge in treating such salty and immense open natural ecosystems. In this study we describe the bromination and the yet unpresented degradation process of high concentrations (5 mg/L) of phenolic EDCs, by the marine red macroalgaeGracilaria sp. As shown, 17α-Ethinylestradiol (EE2), a well-known contraceptive drug, and one of the most persistent phenol EDCs in the environment, was eliminated from both the medium and tissues of the macroalga, in addition to the degradation of all metabolites as verified by the nil estrogenic activity recorded in the medium. Validation of the proposed bromination-degradation route was reinforced by identifying Bisphenol A (BPA) brominated degradation products only, following 168H of incubation in the presence of Gracilaria sp. As demonstrated in this assay for EE2, BPA and finally for paracetamol, it is likely that the phenol scavenging activity is nonspecific and, thus, possibly even a wider scope of various other phenol-based pollutants might be treated in coastal waters. As far as we know, Gracilaria sp. is the only marine sessile organism able of degrading various phenol based pollutants. The worldwide distribution of many Gracilaria species and their wide aquaculture knowhow, suggest that bioremediation based on these seaweeds is a possible cost effective progressive solution to the treatment of a wide scope of phenols at the marine environment.

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are of major concern due to their high persistence and toxicity. Recently, rare earth elements (REEs) concentration in aquatic ecosystems has been increasing due to their application in modern technologies. Thus, this work aimed to study, for the first time, the influence of REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium) and of salinity (10 and 30) on the removal of PTEs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb) from contaminated waters by living macroalgae (Fucus spiralis, Fucus vesiculosus, Gracilaria sp., Osmundea pinnatifida, Ulva intestinalis and Ulva lactuca). Experiments ran for 168 h, with each macroalga exposed to saline water spiked with the six PTEs and with the six PTEs plus nine REEs (all at 1 μmol L⁻¹) at both salinities. Results showed that all species have high affinity with Hg (90–99% of removal), not being affected neither by salinity changes nor by the presence of other PTEs or REEs. Cd showed the lowest affinity to most macroalgae, with residual concentrations in water varying between 50 and 108 μg L⁻¹, while Pb removal always increased with salinity decline (up to 80% at salinity 10). REEs influence was clearer at salinity 30, and mainly for Pb. No substantial changes were observed in Ni and Hg sorption. For the remaining elements, the effect of REEs varied among algae species. Overall, the results highlight the role of marine macroalgae as living biofilters (particularly U. lactuca), capable of lowering the levels of top priority hazardous substances (particularly Hg) and other PTEs in water, even in the presence of the new emerging contaminants - REEs. Differences in removal efficiency between elements and macroalgae are explained by the contaminant chemistry in water and by macroalgae characteristics.

In the present investigation seaweeds of macroalgae like Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria salicornia and Gracilaria edulis used as novel biosorbent in native (KA, GS, GE) and ethanol modified (EKA, EGS, EGE) for Rhodamine B (RB) removal from aqueous solution in batch process. Effect of various biosorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration of RB, biosorbent dosage and contact time were studied. The maximum biosorption capacity determined as 9.84 (KA), 11.03 (GS), 8.96 (GE), 112.35 (EKA), 105.26 (EGS) and 97.08 mg/g (EGE), respectively towards the removal of RB from aqueous solutions. Better removal of RB was observed using EKA, EGS, and EGE biosorbents at 2.0 pH. The characterizations of the biosorbents were performed using Scanning Electron microscope and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Biosorption equilibrium data evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Jovanovic isotherm model. The Langmuir isotherm model best suited the equilibrium data for all the biosorbents studied. The rate of RB removal subjected to kinetic analysis using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion and Elovich models. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model better described the experimental data of the RB biosorption. Desorption studies performed using 0.1 M sodium hydroxide as eluting agents for regeneration and recycle analysis. The recyclability of the six biosorbents showed consistent biosorption capacity towards RB removal up to the entire three cycles. The studied biosorbents sourced from large volume and easily available, further biosorption performance indicated that the KA, GS, GE, EKA, EGS and EGE could be used as efficient, alternative and eco-friendly biosorbents for the removal of harmful dyes in the environment.

To reduce negative environmental impacts from human aquaculture activities, the red alga Gracilaria lemaneiformis was co-cultured with the fish Pseudosciaena crocea in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system for 35d in Yantian Bay. The eutrophication index value decreased from 14.5 to 8.4 after seaweeds were co-cultured in cage farming areas, which indicated that the eutrophic water column in Yantian Bay could be mediated by IMTA. Total DIN and DIP of the tidal input and output were 9.23kg, 0.19kg and 11.08kg, and 0.27kg, respectively. Total 5.24kg of dissolved N and 0.81kg of dissolved P were released from IMTA system. These results indicate that G. lemaneiformis co-cultured in IMTA system could not completely remove all excess nutrients. In theory, at least 324.48kg of seaweed seedlings would be required to balance excess nutrients generated from fish cages.

Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280–400nm) is known to inhibit the photosynthesis of macroalgae, whereas nitrogen availability may alter the sensitivity of the algae to UVR. Here, we show that UV-B (280–315nm) significantly reduced the net photosynthetic rate of Gracilaria lemaneiformis. This inhibition was alleviated by enrichment with ammonia, which also caused a decrease in dark respiration. The presence of both UV-A (315–400nm) and UV-B stimulated the accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds. However, this stimulation was not affected by enrichment with ammonia. The content of phycoerythrin (PE) was increased by the enrichment of ammonia only in the absence of UVR. Ammonia uptake and the activity of nitrate reductase were repressed by UVR. However, exposure to UVR had an insignificant effect on the rate of nitrate uptake. In conclusion, increased PE content associated with ammonia enrichment played a protective role against UVR in this alga, and UVR differentially affected the uptake of nitrate and ammonia.

Gracilaria edulis is one of India's most widely cultivated seaweeds. Pilot scale cultivation of Gracilaria edulis was initiated at Andaman, India for the first time. In the present study attempt has been made to identify how different water quality parameters influence the growth. Total 11 physicochemical parameters and 9 microbiological parameters, as well as chlorophyll and zooplankton, phytoplankton parameters were studied for two different seasons to evaluate which parameters influence seaweed growth. Six (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, silicate, chlorophyll, photosynthetic active radiation) have a positive impact on seaweed growth, while some of the bacterial species showed negative impact. Lowess 3D curve fit model showed pH range from 7.59 to 7.82, N/P ratio of 2.046, rainfall 23.85–24 mm, and Photosynthetic active radiation of 376.6 W/m² are optimum for Gracillaria growth. This model can be applied to future mass culture.

Seaweeds are important primary producers and bioremediation materials, but its litter produced during growth and harvest is one of the restrictions to the sustainable development of seaweed cultivation. In this study, we conducted field investigation and indoor experiments to analyze the bioaccumulation and release of metals in Gracilaria lemaneiformis during the growth and decaying. The investigation revealed the 3.5 × 10⁵ t (wet weight) G. lemaneiformis from a 1500 ha cultivation area bioaccumulated 1925–2353 kg Zn, 233.5–251 kg Cu, 70.5–80.5 kg Pb and 25.5–47 kg Cd, indicating that G. lemaneiformis is a good metals remover. The growth and decaying period of G. lemaneiformis releases, absorbs or adsorbs metals. It has the function of a “heavy metal pool”, simultaneously accumulate and release metals. G. lemaneiformis has a strong influence on heavy metals cycling in the seaweed cultivation ecosystem and provides a very good sample for biogeochemistry study for the globally seaweed sustainable development.

Large seaweed cultivation has proven an effective means to inhibit harmful microalgae at experimental scales and battle eutrophication in Chinese coastal waters, but essentially there is a lack of field-scale studies to explore the underlying mechanism. Here we present a 1.5-year-long time series of particulate organic matter (POM) and settling particulate matter (SPM) concentrations from an integrated aquaculture of Gracilaria lemaneiformis off the coast of Nan'ao Island, South China from April 2014 to August 2015. The microscopic examination and geochemical characteristics show that the POM mainly consisted of microalgae. The mean POM concentration increased 99.8%, 71.2%, 45.8% and 111.9% at the four sampling sites during the non-cultivation period, while decreased 25.5%, 17.3%, 12.2% and 20.3%, respectively, during the seaweed cultivation period. These results suggest that the large scale seaweed cultivation can remove excess nutrients and inhibit microalgal growth, thereby contributing to the improvement of coastal marine aquaculture environment.

Proteome response of plants is an important process that enables them to cope with environmental stress including metal stress. In this study, the proteome of Gracilaria lemaneiformis exposed to lead was investigated. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis analysis revealed 123 protein spots, among which 14 proteins were significantly differentially expressed and identified using MALDI-TOF MS. Two of the up-regulated proteins were identified and predicted to be involved in photosynthesis and signal transduction, while eleven down-regulated proteins were functionally grouped into five classes including photosynthesis, energy metabolism, protein metabolism, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, and antioxidation proteins. There was also an up-regulation in superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, glutathione s-transferase, and heat-shock protein 70 upon Pb exposure. Proteomic studies provide a better picture of protein networks and metabolic pathways primarily involved in intracellular detoxification and defense mechanisms.

Intensive mariculture results in a rise in nutrient concentrations, then leads to serious eutrophication in coastal waters. Based on the sampling data obtained between August 2012 and July 2013, the eutrophication status in Yantian Bay was assessed, and the proportion of marine animals co-cultured with seaweeds was evaluated. The nutritional quality index (NQI) ranged from 4.37 to 13.20, indicating serious eutrophication conditions. The annual average ratio of nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) was 25.19, indicating a nitrogen surplus in this system. DIN was selected as the best parameter to balance seaweed absorption and marine animal DIN production. Gracilaria lemaneiformis and Laminaria japonica were selected as co-cultured seaweeds. The optimal proportion of G. lemaneiformis production was assessed as 20074.14 tonnes. The optimal proportion of L. japonica production was evaluated as 15890.68 tonnes. High-temperature adapted seaweeds should be introduced for removing nutrients releasing by farmed aquatic animals in the summer in Yantian Bay.
