The heavy metal pollution in soil caused by mining area development is a global problem. In order to screen the ecological restoration plants of copper silver tailings in arid and high saline alkali areas, and evaluate their economic value, nine kinds of plants naturally growing in the northwest copper silver tailings pond were selected, the enrichment and transfer characteristics of eight heavy metals by this plants was analyzed, and potential health risks for humans of plants were focused. The results showed that the heavy metals such as Cd, As, Cu, Hg and Ag are all from the open-air accumulation of tailings slag. Translocation factors of Cu, Ni and Cr by C. tragacanthoides are 2.1205, 53.1548 and 13.7622, bioconcentration factor of Cu, Ni and Cr by C. tragacanthoides are 1.8888, 7.1979, 7.4653, C. tragacanthoides is the hyperaccumulator for Cu, Ni and Cr. Hazard index in roots of S. collina, C. virgata and A. splendens to adults is more than 1, it has a potential non-cancer effects for more than half of adults, and for over 86.23% of children. Ag, Cr and As contribute the best to HI, and the cumulative contribution rate of the three elements can reach 85.59% to 96.39%. It is necessary to improve the treatment of tail slag to reduce environmental pollution, C. tragacanthoides can be considered as heavy metal remediation plants in arid and high saline copper tailing areas, but there is no medicinal value for these plants as ecological reconstruction in tailings area.

2021
Guo, Fangjie | Yin, Shanshan | Wang, Haiyan | Zhang, Jianyun | Liu, Yingxue | Aamir, Muhammad | Liu, Weiping
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) may transfer into the neonates through the placental transfer and via breastfeeding after the delivery, thus might be harmful to the infant. Sixty colostrum samples in the Yangtze River Region were collected to investigate the concentration, distribution pattern, and enantiomer characteristic of the PCB exposure. Among all samples, over 90% of pollutants were tetra-to hepta-chlorinated PCBs. The sum concentration of the PCB was 512 (IQR: 322–856) ng g⁻¹ lipid weight. Enantiomer fraction (EF) of PCB 95 and PCB 149 was found lower than the racemic value, while EFs of PCB 45 and PCB 136 were found higher and near-racemic state, respectively. The concentration pattern and enantiomeric properties of the PCBs indicated that the mothers from Mianyang had a recent exposure to PCBs. Among all samples, similar exposure and metabolic pathways of the PCB congeners were observed. PCB exposure showed no significant correlation with the birth outcome of the infants, but 43.3% of the infants have potential health risks via breastfeeding.

Vehicular emissions are known to be major contributors of airborne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cities. In order to assess the long-term contamination of PAHs along roads, we collected organic films from vehicle windows (26 private cars and 4 buses, in Shanghai, China) and used mathematical models to convert the film-bound PAH concentrations to the airborne PAH concentrations. The field measurements of airborne PAHs revealed that the partitioning and Level III fugacity model was suitable to estimate the airborne concentrations of high and low volatile PAHs (expect for naphthalene), respectively. The total airborne PAH concentrations along roads in Shanghai ranged from 0.83 to 3.37 μg m⁻³ and the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRₜₒₜₐₗ) by exposure to PAHs along roads were greater than the USEPA lower guideline of 10⁻⁶, indicating non-negligible carcinogenic risks to drivers and passengers, especially via ingestion processes. This study provided a practicable method to investigate long-term air contamination of PAHs in vehicles and along roads based on film-bound PAH on vehicle windows. In addition, it was also possible to investigate the health risk in vehicles as a result of exposure to PAHs. Comparisons of PAHs between roads and shipping lanes also facilitated the delineation of vehicular and shipping PAH inventories.A capsule that summarizes the main finding of the work: Investigating film-bound PAH on vehicle windows is a practicable pathway to investigate the long-term contamination of PAHs in vehicles and along roads. This method can not only simplify the sampling processes, but the model calculations. The results also enabled investigations into ILCR in vehicles and specified source apportionment of traffic PAHs.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants which have been reported to be hepatotoxic by laboratory cell and animal studies. However, the related epidemiological reports on their hepatotoxic effects to humans are sparse. In this study, we evaluated the associations between six liver enzymes and serum short-chain CP (SCCP) or medium-chain CP (MCCP) concentrations of 197 residents in Jinan, China. Serum S/MCCPs were detected by quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry coupled with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source (APCI-QTOF-HRMS), and quantified by pattern deconvolution method. The associations between total serum S/MCCP concentrations (ΣS/MCCPs) and continuous liver enzyme levels were assessed by linear regression. Odds ratios (ORs) for the effects of serum ΣS/MCCPs concentrations on liver function biomarkers dichotomized by clinical reference intervals were predicted by logistic regression, either treating ΣS/MCCPs as continuous or categorical dependents. After multivariable adjustment, linear regression results illustrated that 1-ln unit increase in serum ΣSCCPs was negatively associated with male PA levels [-6.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): −11.90, −3.25, p < 0.05], positively associated with male TB levels (1.80, 95% CI: 0.28, 3.31, p < 0.05), and positively associated with female AST levels (1.39, 95% CI: 0.07, 2.70, p < 0.05). One-ln unit increase in serum ΣMCCPs was negatively associated male PA levels (−7.56, 95% CI: −17.15, −4.03, p < 0.05). Logistic regression results suggested that male serum ΣSCCPs were associated with increased prevalence of abnormal PA (OR = 1.47 per 1 ln-unit increase, CI = 1.18, 1.82) and TB (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.12, 2.76) levels, and male serum ΣMCCPs were significantly associated with increased prevalence of abnormal PA (OR = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.97) levels. In addition, male participants with concentrations above the median ΣS/MCCPs were associated with increased risk for abnormal PA levels [SCCPs, 2.11-fold (95% CI = 1.15, 3.87); MCCPs, 1.94-fold (95% CI = 1.24, 3.03)]. Male participants with concentrations above the median ΣSCCPs were also associated with increased risk for abnormal TB levels (OR = 1.75, 95% CI = 1.12, 2.76). Conclusively, our results revealed that CP internal exposure was associated with disturbed liver biomarker levels, suggesting the hepatotoxicity of both SCCPs and MCCPs to humans.

PM₂.₅ in Shijiazhuang was collected from October 15, 2018 to January 31, 2019, and selected toxic elements were measured. Five typical haze episodes were chosen to analyze the health risks and critical risk sources. Toxic elements during the haze episodes accounted for 0.33% of PM₂.₅ mass. Non-cancer risk of toxic elements for children was 1.8 times higher than that for adults during the haze episodes, while cancer risk for adults was 2.5 times higher than that for children; cancer and non-cancer risks were primarily attributable to As and Mn, respectively. Health risks of toxic elements increased during the growth and stable periods of haze episodes. Non-cancer and cancer risks of toxic elements during the haze stable periods were higher than other haze stages, and higher for children than for adults during the stable period. Mn was the largest contributor to non-cancer risk during different haze stages, while As was the largest contributor to cancer risk. Crustal dust, vehicle emissions, and industrial emissions were critical sources of cancer risk during the clean-air periods; while vehicle emissions, coal combustion, and crustal dust were key sources of cancer risk during the haze episodes. Cancer risks of crustal dust and vehicle emissions during the haze episodes were 2.0 and 1.7 times higher than those in the clean-air periods. Non-cancer risks from emission sources were not found during different periods. Cancer risks of biomass burning and coal combustion increased rapidly during the haze growth period, while that of coal combustion decreased sharply during the dissipation period. Vehicle emissions, crustal dust, and coal combustion were significant cancer risk sources during different haze stages, cancer risk of each source was the highest during the stable period. Southern Hebei, Northern and central Shaanxi were potential risk regions that affected the health of both adults and children in Shijiazhuang.

2021
Guo, Yuan | Li, Zijian
To evaluate pesticide regulatory standards in agricultural crops, we introduced a regulatory modeling framework that can flexibly evaluate a population’s aggregate exposure risk via maximum residue levels (MRLs) under good agricultural practice (GAP). Based on the structure of the aggregate exposure model and the nature of variable distributions, we optimized the framework to achieve a simplified mathematical expression based on lognormal variables including the lognormal sum approximation and lognormal product theorem. The proposed model was validated using Monte Carlo simulation, which demonstrates a good match for both head and tail ends of the distribution (e.g., the maximum error = 2.01% at the 99th percentile). In comparison with the point estimate approach (i.e., theoretical maximum daily intake, TMDI), the proposed model produced higher simulated daily intake (SDI) values based on empirical and precautionary assumptions. For example, the values at the 75th percentile of the SDI distributions simulated from the European Union (EU) MRLs of 13 common pesticides in 12 common crops were equal to the estimated TMDI values, and the SDI values at the 99th percentile were over 1.6-times the corresponding TMDI values. Furthermore, the model was refined by incorporating the lognormal distributions of biometric variables (i.e., food intake rate, processing factor, and body weight) and varying the unit-to-unit variability factor (VF) of the pesticide residues in crops. This ensures that our proposed model is flexible across a broad spectrum of pesticide residues. Overall, our results show that the SDI is significantly reduced, which may better reflect reality. In addition, using a point estimate or lognormal PF distribution is effective as risk assessments typically focus on the upper end of the distribution.

2021
Lv, Yao | Li, Yanyan | Liu, Xiaohui | Xu, Kun
The negative impact of antibiotic pollution on the agricultural system and human health is a hot issue in the world. However, little information is available on the antibiotics toxicity mechanism and the role of silicon (Si) to alleviate the antibiotics toxicity. In this study, strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) showed excitatory response to low-dose SMZ (1 mg L⁻¹), but strawberry root and photosynthetic efficiency were damaged under high level. When SMZ level exceeded 10 mg L⁻¹, H₂0₂, O₂⁻, MDA and relative conductivity increased, while SOD and CAT activities first increased and then decreased. SMZ accumulated more in roots and fruits, but less in stems, and the accumulation increased with the increase of SMZ-dose. Under 1 mg L⁻¹ SMZ, the SMZ accumulation in fruits was 110.54 μg kg⁻¹, which exceeded the maximum residue limit. SMZ can induce the expression of sul1, sul2 and intI1, and intI1 had the highest abundance. Exogenous application of Si alleviated the toxicity of SMZ, which is mainly related to the degradation of SMZ in soil and the reduction of SMZ absorption by strawberry. In addition, Si relieved root damage, promoted the increase of photosynthetic efficiency, and improved the antioxidant system to resist SMZ toxicity.

2021
Air quality has been significantly improved in China in recent years; however, our knowledge of the long-term changes in health risks from exposure to air pollutants remain less understood. Here we investigated the temporal variations and spatial distributions of six criteria pollutants (SO₂, NO₂, O₃, CO, PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀) in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) during 2015–2019. SO₂ showed 36−60% reductions in three regions, comparatively, NO₂ decreased by 3–17% in BTH and YRD and had a 5% increase in PRD. PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ showed the largest reductions in BTH (30−33%) and the lowest in PRD (7−13%), while O₃ increased by 9% during 2015–2019 particularly in BTH and YRD. Assuming that only air pollutants above given thresholds exert excess risk (ERₜₒₜₐₗ) of mortality, we found that the different variations of pollutants have caused ERₜₒₜₐₗ in BTH decreasing significantly from 4.8% in 2015 to 2.0% in 2019, while from 1.9% to 1.0% in YRD, and a small change in PRD. These results indicate substantially decreased health risks of mortality from exposure to air pollutants as a response to improved air quality. Overall, PM₂.₅ dominated ERₜₒₜₐₗ accounting for 42−53% in BTH and 58−64% in YRD with steadily increased contributions, yet ERₜₒₜₐₗ presented strong seasonal dependence on air pollutants with largely increased contribution of O₃ in summer. The ERₜₒₜₐₗ caused by SO₂ was decreased substantially and became negligible except in winter in BTH, while NO₂ only played a role in winter. We also found that ERPM₂.₅ was compositional dependent with organics being the major contributor at low ERPM₂.₅ while nitrate was more important at high ERPM₂.₅. Our results highlight that evaluation of public health risks of air pollution needs to consider chemical differences of PM in different regions in addition to dominant air pollutants in different seasons.

Urban parks are an important part of the urban ecological environment. The environmental quality of parks is related to human health. To evaluate sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of urban parks and their possible health risks, soil samples from 122 parks in Beijing, China, were collected and analyzed. The total content of 16 PAHs between 0.066 and 6.867 mg/kg. Four-ring PAHs were predominant, followed by 5-ring PAHs, while the fraction of 2-ring PAHs was the lowest. The dominant PAHs sources were found to be coal combustion and oil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. A conditional inference tree (CIT) was used to identify the key influencing factors for PAHs. Traffic emissions was the most important factor, followed by coal consumption, as well as the history and location of the park. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for urban park soil in Beijing were low under normal conditions. The soil PAHs exposure pathway risk for both children and adults decreased in the following order: ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The risk from soil in parks to children’s health is slightly higher than that of adults, although the health risk due to exposure to PAHs was not extraordinary. Ecosystem risk was negligible.

2018
Hadayat, Naila | De Oliveira, Letuzia M. | Da Silva, Evandro | Han, Lingyue | Hussain, Mumtaz | Liu, Xue | Ma, Lena Q.
Metal concentrations (As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Ba, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) in conventional and organic produce were assessed, specifically, five most-consumed vegetables from the US including potato, lettuce, tomato, carrot and onion. They were from four representative supermarkets in a college town in Florida. All vegetables contained detectable metals, while As, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ba are toxic metals, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are nutrients for humans. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ba in five vegetables were 7.86, 9.17, 12.1, 44.8 and 410 μg/kg for organic produce, slightly lower than conventional produce at 7.29, 15.3, 17.9, 46.3 and 423 μg/kg. The mean concentrations of Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn in five vegetables were 3.86, 58.5, 632, and 2528 μg/kg for organic produce, comparable to conventional produce at 5.94, 68.2, 577, and 2354 μg/kg. For toxic metals, the order followed tomato < lettuce < onion < carrot < potato, with root vegetables being the highest. All metals in vegetables were lower than the allowable concentrations by FAO/WHO. Health risks associated with vegetable consumption based on daily intake and non-carcinogenic risk based on hazard quotient were lower than allowable limits. For the five most-consumed vegetables in the US, metal contents in conventional produce were slightly greater than organic produce, especially for Cd and Pb.
