Effects of plant additives on the concentration of sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the combustion products of coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals

The active use of solid fossil fuels (coal) in the production of heat and electricity has led to significant pollution, climate change, environmental degradation, and an increase in morbidity and mortality. Many countries (in particular, European ones, China, Japan, the USA, Canada, etc.) have launched programs for using plant and agricultural raw materials to produce heat and electricity by burning them instead of or together with traditional fuels. It is a promising solution to produce slurry fuels, based on a mixture of coal processing, oil refining and agricultural waste. This paper presents the results of experimental research into the formation and assessment of the most hazardous emissions (sulfur and nitrogen oxides) from the combustion of promising coal slurry fuels with straw, sunflower and algae additives, i.e. the most common agricultural waste. A comparative analysis has been carried out to identify the differences in the concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the combustion of typical coal, coal processing waste, as well as fuel slurries with and without plant additives. It has been shown that the concentration of sulfur and nitrogen oxides can be reduced by 62–87% and 12–57%, respectively, when using small masses of plant additives (no more than 10 wt%) and maintaining high combustion heat of the slurry fuel. However, the use of algae and straw in the slurry composition can increase the HCl emissions, which requires extra measures to fight corrosion. A generalizing criterion of slurry fuel vs. coal efficiency has been formulated to illustrate significant benefits of adding plant solid waste to coal-water slurries containing petrochemicals. Straw and sunflower waste (10 wt%) were found to be the best additives to reduce the air pollutant emissions.

We investigated the profiles and levels of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids in edible clams from five fishing sites in Japan (Hokkaido, Himakajima-Aichi, Atsumi-Aichi, Kyoto, and Kumamoto) and one site in Vancouver, Canada in 2017. The mean concentrations of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids with 6–15 carbon atoms (C6–C15) in edible clams from Japanese coastal waters ranged from 197 to 1757 pg/g wet weight, but were only 48 pg/g wet weight in clams from the site in Canada. Total perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid concentrations in clams collected in Japanese waters were 4–40 times higher than concentrations in clams from Canada. Perfluorooctanoic acid (C8) contributed 53% of total perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acid concentrations in the clams from Japanese waters, which may be contaminated from terrestrial sources though river effluents, but was not detected in the clam samples from Canada. Principal component analysis separated shorter- and longer-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, suggesting differing emission sources or environmental fate. Consumption of clams may be an exposure pathway of perfluorooctanoic acid in the Japanese population.

The dissemination of antibiotic resistance (AR) has attracted global attention because of the increasing antibiotic treatment failure it has caused. Through natural transformation, a live bacterium takes up extracellular DNA (exDNA), which facilitates AR dissemination. However, recovery of exDNA from water samples is challenging. In this study, we validated a consecutive ultrafiltration-based protocol to simultaneously recover intracellular DNA (inDNA), dissolved exDNA (Dis_exDNA, dissolved in the bulk water), and adsorbed exDNA (Ads_exDNA, adsorbed to the surfaces of suspended particles). Using hollow fiber ultrafiltration (HFUF), all DNA fractions were concentrated from environmental water samples, after which Dis_exDNA (supernatant) was separated from inDNA and Ads_exDNA (pellets) using centrifugation. Ads_exDNA was washed off from the pellets with proteinase K and sodium phosphate buffer. Dis_exDNA and Ads_exDNA were further concentrated using centrifugal ultrafiltration, from which silica binding was performed. inDNA was extracted from washed pellets with a commercial kit. For inDNA, HFUF showed recovery efficiencies of 96.5 ± 18.5% and 88.0 ± 2.0% for total cells and cultured Escherichia coli, respectively (n = 3). To represent all possible DNA fragments in water environment, exDNA with different lengths (10.0, 4.0, 1.0, and 0.5 kbp) were spiked to test the recovery efficiencies for Dis_exDNA. The whole process achieved 62.2%–62.9% recovery for 10 and 4 kbp exDNA, and 38.8%–44.5% recovery for 1.0 and 0.5 kbp exDNA. Proteinase K treatment enhanced the recovery of Ads_exDNA by 4.0–10.7 times. The protocol was applied to water samples from an urban river in Tokyo, Japan. The abundance of AR genes (ARGs) in inDNA, Dis_exDNA, and Ads_exDNA increased downstream of wastewater treatment plants. ARGs in Ads_exDNA and Dis_exDNA accounted for 1.8%–26.7% and 0.03%–20.9%, respectively, of the total DNA, implying that Ads_exDNA and Dis_exDNA are nonnegligible potential pools for the horizontal transfer of ARGs.

Accurate estimation of historical PM2.5 exposures for epidemiological studies is challenging when extensive monitoring data are limited in duration. Here, we develop a national-scale PM2.5 exposure model for Japan using measurements recorded between 2014 and 2016 to estimate monthly means for 1987 through 2016. Our objective is to obtain accurate PM2.5 estimates for years prior to implementation of extensive PM2.5 monitoring, using observations from a limited period. We utilize a neural network to convey the non-linear relationship between the target pollutant and predictors, while incorporating the associated air pollutants. We obtain high R² values of 0.76 and 0.73 through spatial and temporal cross validation, respectively. We evaluate estimation accuracy using an independent data set and achieve an R² of 0.75. Moreover, monthly variations for 2000–2013 are well reproduced with correlation coefficients of greater than 0.78, obtained through a comparison with observations. We estimate monthly means at 1 × 1 km resolution from 1987 through 2016. The estimates show decreases in the area and population weighted means beginning in the 1990s. We successfully estimate monthly mean PM2.5 concentrations over three decades with outstanding predictive accuracy. Our findings illustrate that the presented approach achieves accurate long-term historical estimations using observations limited in duration.

Field survey-based ecological risk assessments for trace metals are conducted to examine the necessity and/or effectiveness of management intervention, such as setting of environmental quality standards. Observational datasets often involve confounders that may bias estimation of the effects of intervention (e.g., reduction of trace-metal concentrations through regulation). The field of ecotoxicology lags behind some other research fields in understanding proper analytical procedures for causal inference from observational datasets; there are only a few field survey-based ecotoxicological studies that have explicitly controlled for confounders in their statistical analyses. In the present study, we estimated the effect of intervention in nickel concentrations on Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera richness in rivers in Japan. We also provide detailed explanations for the backgrounds of spurious associations derived from confounders and on proper analytical procedures for obtaining an unbiased estimate of the targeted intervention effect by using regression analysis. We constructed a multiple regression model based on a causal diagram for aquatic insects and environmental factors, and on “the backdoor criterion,” that enabled us to determine the set of covariates required to obtain an unbiased estimate of the targeted intervention effect from regression coefficients. We found that management intervention in nickel concentrations may be ineffective compared to intervention in organic pollution, and that analysis ignoring the confounders overestimated the effect of intervention in nickel concentrations. Our results highlight the fact that confounders can lead to misjudging the necessity for management of anthropogenic chemical substances. Confounders should be explicitly specified and statistically controlled to achieve a comprehensive assessment of ecological risks for various substances.

After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, radionuclides released by this event were observed in the Pacific Ocean. Models predicted that these radionuclides would be transported to the Bering Sea; however, limited evidence currently reveals the transportation of these radionuclides to the Arctic Ocean. Here, we provide the first direct observation showing that FDNPP-derived 134Cs and 137Cs were present in subarctic regions and the Arctic Ocean (Chukchi Sea) in 2017. Furthermore, we conclude that these radionuclides were transported from the Pacific Ocean into the Bering and Chukchi Seas by ocean currents. Additionally, the 137Cs activity concentrations in the Bering Sea exceed those in all previous reports. Due to the continuous leaking of radionuclides from the FDNPP, we hypothesize that FDNPP-derived radionuclides will be continuously transported to the Arctic Ocean in the next several years. Our results suggest that though far away from Fukushima, the accident-derived anthropogenic radionuclides also influenced the Arctic Ocean by ocean currents.

The central mountainous area of Japan is affected by air pollutant emissions from nearby countries such as China and Korea. Sharp increases in the consumption of fossil fuels in the early 21st century, associated with rapid industrialization in China, resulted in long-range transport of pollutants from East Asia and increases in the harmful effects of pollution. However, the air pollutants emissions have decreased since 2006, when air pollution countermeasures were implemented in China. Furthermore, climatic patterns during 2008–2013 reduced tropospheric ozone concentrations around Japan. Such major changes in the social and climatic environment may have had a significant impact on forests. To investigate this, long-term forest monitoring data obtained at Buna-daira (1190 m a.s.l.), Buna-zaka (1090 m a.s.l.) and Arimine (1350 m a.s.l.) were analyzed. Buna-daira and Buna-zaka forests face the continental side of Mt. Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture. In both stands, the girth growth rate of Fagus crenata was found to have increased after 2008; however, such a tendency was not detected at Arimine, which is surrounded by mountains. The growth rates of Cryptomeria japonica, a conifer resistant to air pollution, were found to remain unchanged or decrease. Here, regional long-range transport of air pollution (including ozone and sulfur oxide) has been demonstrated to influence mountain forests in Japan. In particular, recent decreases in regional air pollution may be an important factor controlling increases in F. crenata, likely through changes in interspecific relationships between species sensitive to and tolerant of air pollution.

Marine animals often accumulate various harmful substances through the foods they ingest. The bioaccumulation levels of these harmful substances are affected by the degrees of pollution in the food and of biomagnification; however, which of these sources is more important is not well-investigated for mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation. Here we addressed this issue in fishes that inhabit the waters around Minamata Bay, located off the west coast of Kyushu Island in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. The total Hg concentration (hereafter [THg]) and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) were analyzed in the muscle tissue of 10 fish species, of which more than five individuals were caught by gillnet. Except one species, each was separated into two trophic groups with respective lower and higher δ¹³C values ranging from −17‰ to −16‰ and −15‰ to −14‰, which suggested that the fishes depended more on either phytoplankton- and microphytobenthos-derived foods (i.e., pelagic and benthic trophic pathways), respectively. Linear mixed effects models showed that the Hg levels were significantly associated with both δ¹⁵N and the differences in the trophic groups. [THg] increased with δ¹⁵N (i.e., indicative of higher trophic levels), but the slopes did not differ between the two trophic groups. [THg] was significantly higher in the group with higher δ¹³C values than in those with lower δ¹³C values. The effect size from marginal R squared (R²) values showed that the variation in [THg] was strongly ascribed to the trophic group difference rather than δ¹⁵N. These results suggest that the substantial Hg bioaccumulation in the fishes of Minamata Bay is mainly an effect of ingesting the microphytobenthos-derived foods that contain Hg, and that the subsequent biomagnification is secondary.

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are common pollutants in coastal waters. To investigate the estrogen risk of EDCs in the coastal areas of Japan, the Japanese common goby, which is a commonly observed species in these waters, was used as the target fish. Plasma 17β-estradiol (E₂) and vitellogenin (VTG) levels were analyzed and the gonads of fish collected from the Taira River (northern Nagasaki, reference site), Nagasaki Port, and two sites in Tokyo Bay were observed. Abnormal levels (>150 ng/mL, p < 0.05) of plasma VTG and high levels of plasma E₂ were detected in the fish from Nagasaki Port and Tokyo Bay, whereas the levels of both were low in the fish from the Taira River. The target EDCs, including natural estrogen [estrone (E₁), and E₂] and alkylphenols [4-t-octylphenol (4-t-OP), 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), and bisphenol-A (BPA)] in water samples were quantified using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS), respectively. It was observed that the E₂-equivalent (EEQ) in Nagasaki Port and Tokyo Bay, which was calculated from the actual EDC measurement value, were almost 20- and 150-fold higher, respectively, than that at the reference site (Taira River, 0.021 ng/L). The EEQs mostly comprised natural estrogen in the sampling sites, although there was some influence of alkylphenols. There was an association between the EEQ and the E₂ in environmental water, suggesting a high estrogen risk in Japan coastal waters. Moreover, the results indicated that abnormal VTG synthesis was induced by environmental estrogen (EE) pollution in Nagasaki Port and Tokyo Bay.

Microplastics (MPs, plastics < 5 mm) are a growing concern in ecosystems, being found in the soil and water environment. One of the primary sources of MPs has been suspected to be road dust in urban areas as it can flow into waters with runoff. To understand the occurrence of MPs (100 μm–5 mm) in surface road dust of three cities (Kusatsu, Shiga, Japan; Da Nang, Vietnam; and Kathmandu, Nepal), we collected surface road dust samples. The samples were pretreated (organic matter decomposition and gravity separation), and all MP candidates were individually observed by microscope for color, shape, and size; and analyzed their polymer types using fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The abundances of MPs 100 μm to 5 mm in size were 2.0 ± 1.6 pieces/m2 (13 polymer types) in Kusatsu, 19.7 ± 13.7 pieces/m2 in Da Nang (14 types), and 12.5 ± 10.1 pieces/m2 in Kathmandu (15 types). We classified the MPs into two groups; containers/packaging-MPs and rubber-MPs. Among all MPs, the containers/packaging-MPs accounted for 55 ± 5% of the polymer types composition. In contrast, the rubber-MPs accounted for 16 ± 6% of all MPs which were higher than those previously published for environmental water and sediment samples. The containers/packaging-MPs were fragments of various colors while most of the rubber-MPs were fragments or granules in black. The number–size distributions of MPs showed that the mode of formation explains the differences between their polymer types (tearing for containers/packaging-MPs and abrasion for rubber-MPs). In Da Nang and Kathmandu, the abundance of containers/packaging-MPs and rubber-MPs were correlated so that those MPs might be micronized from the originated materials in the sources with the similar composition (e.g. dump points). It was indicated that the characteristics of MPs pollution in surface road dust might be different depending on waste management practices.
