Due to the high radiotoxicity in high concentrations, plutonium isotopes have drawn high attentions in the consideration of radiation risk, their sources, level, environmental behaviors, including deposition, retention and migration behaviors. However, such research in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is still missing, where is deemed as an environmental sensitive area. ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu in surface soil collected from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were determined for the first time in this work. The concentrations of ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu are in the range of 0.0176–1.95 Bq/kg, falling into the reported ranges in the background areas from the similar latitude belt. The ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atomic ratio range was measured to be 0.146–0.225, which is similar with the global fallout values. Both indicate that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in this region, and the low plutonium level will not cause any radiation risk so far. Based on the statistical analysis of the possible parameters (organic content, moisture content, average annual precipitation, altitudes, topography and human activity), the large variations of ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu concentrations were mainly attributed to the retention process related factors including soil organic content and human activity disturbances. While, the deposition related factors including the average annual precipitation, altitudes, topography made insignificant influence on the spatial distribution of ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu concentrations due to the low ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu concentrations in atmosphere, less wet deposition amount and insignificant re-suspended amount. The highest ²³⁹,²⁴⁰Pu concentrations of 0.805–1.95 Bq/kg were mainly due to the good retention condition in the sampling sites with higher soil organic content and less human activity disturbances.

Estuarine environments faced with contaminations from coastal zones and the inland are vital sinks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, little is known about the temporal-spatial pattern of ARGs and its predominant constraints in estuarine environments. Here, we leveraged metagenomics to investigate ARG profiles from 16 China's estuaries across 6 climate zones in dry and wet seasons, and disentangled their relationships with environmental constraints. Our results revealed that ARG abundance, richness, and diversity in dry season were higher than those in wet season, and ARG abundance exhibited an increasing trend with latitude. The prevalence of ARGs was significantly driven by human activities, mobile gene elements, microbial communities, antibiotic residuals, physicochemical properties, and climatic variables. Among which, climatic variables and human activities ranked the most important factors, contributing 44% and 36% of the total variance of observed ARGs, respectively. The most important climatic variable shaping ARGs is temperature, where increasing temperature is associated with decreased ARGs. Our results highlight that the prevalence of ARGs in estuarine environments would be co-driven by anthropogenic activities and climate, and suggest the dynamics of ARGs under future changing climate and socioeconomic development.

The problem of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in farmland is a key issue in global pollution prevention and control and has an important impact on environmental safety, human health, and sustainable agricultural development. Based on the climate background of high–latitude cold regions, this study simulated freeze–thaw cycles through indoor tests. Different initial conditions, such as biochar application rates (0%, 1%, 2%) and different initial soil moisture contents (15%, 20%, 25%), were set to explore the morphological changes in cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in soil and the response relationship to the changes in soil physicochemical properties. The results indicate that soil pH decreases during freeze–thaw cycles, and soil alkalinity increases with increasing biochar content. Freeze–thaw cycles caused the total amount of PTEs to have a U–shaped distribution, and the amount of PTEs in the soluble (SOL) and reducible (RED) fraction increased by 0.28–56.19%. Biochar reduced the amount of Cd and Pb migration in the soil, and an increase in soil moisture content reduced the availability of Cd and Pb in the soil. Freezing and thawing damaged the soil structure, and biochar reduced the fractionation of small particle aggregates by enhancing the stability of soil aggregates, thereby reducing the soil's ability to adsorb Cd and Pb. In summary, for farmland soil remediation and pollution control, the application of biochar has a certain ability to optimize soil properties. Considering the distribution of PTEs in the soil and the physicochemical properties of the soil, the application of 1% biochar to soil with a 20% moisture content is optimal for regulating seasonally frozen soil remediation.

Lipids are important biogenic markers to indicate the sources and chemical process of aerosol particles in the atmosphere. To better understand the influences of biogenic and anthropogenic sources on forest aerosols, total suspended particles (TSP) were collected at Mt. Changbai, Shennongjia, and Xishuangbanna that are located at different climatic zones in northeastern, central and southwestern China. n-Alkanes, fatty acids and n-alcohols were detected in the forest aerosols based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The total concentrations of aliphatic compounds ranged from 15.3 ng m⁻³ to 566 ng m⁻³, and fatty acids were the most abundant (44–95%) followed by n-alkanes and n-alcohols. Low molecular weight- (LFAs) and unsaturated fatty acids (UnFAs) showed diurnal variation with higher concentrations during the nighttime in summer, indicating the potential impact from microbial activities on forest aerosols. The differences of oleic acid (C₁₈:₁) and linoleic acid (C₁₈:₂) concentrations between daytime and nighttime increased at lower latitude, indicating more intense photochemical degradation occurred at lower latitude regions. High levels of n-alkanes during daytime in summer with higher values of carbon preference indexes, combining the strong odd carbon number predominance with a maximum at C₂₇ or C₂₉, implied the high contributions of biogenic sources, e.g., higher plant waxes. In contrast, higher concentrations of low molecular weight n-alkanes were detected in winter forest aerosols. Levoglucosan showed a positive correlation (R² > 0.57) with high- and low molecular weight aliphatic compounds in Mt. Changbai, but such a correlation was not observed in Shennongjia and Xishuangbanna. These results suggest the significant influence of biomass burning in Mt. Changbai, and fossil fuel combustion might be another important anthropogenic source of forest aerosols. This study adds useful information to the current understanding of forest organic aerosols at different geographical locations in China.

Li, Tingkun | Bi, Xiaohui | Dai, Qili | Wu, Jianhui | Zhang, Yufen | Feng, Yinchang
Based on the wind erosion equation and the use of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite remote sensing data combined with parameter normalization processing, an optimized high spatial-temporal resolution soil fugitive dust (SFD) emission inventory compiling method was proposed in this study. The "2 + 26" cities in northern China, where heavy pollution frequently occurs, were used as a case study. Using the optimized method, we estimated that the PM₅₀, PM₁₀, and PM₂.₅ emissions from SFD of "2 + 26" cities in 2018 were 2,014,927, 1,007,463, and 151,120 tons, respectively. The dust emissions and emission factors of each city presented significant differences and were generally of a greater level in high-latitude areas (such as cities in Hebei Province) than in low-latitude areas (such as cities in Henan and Shandong Province). Moreover, with an increase in latitude, vegetation cover factors generally exhibit an upward trend, while temperature and rainfall exhibit a downward trend. The dust emissions in the different months showed significant differences. The total dust emission reached the highest level in "late winter–early spring" season (February to April), and the monthly emission accounted for 15–17% of the annual emissions. While in the "summer–autumn" season (July to November), it is the lowest level of the whole year, monthly emissions accounted for 3–5% of the annual emissions. The emission inventory method proposed in this study can provide a reference for dust emission assessment and further pollution prevention and control work.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of geo-climatic parameters and other potential risk factors on the prevalence of chronic toxoplasmosis (CT) in pregnant women. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, and SciELO databases for seroepidemiological studies published between January 1988, and February 2021. We performed meta-analysis and meta-regression by using a random effect model to synthesize data. A total of 360 eligible datasets, including 1,289,605 pregnant women from 94 countries, were included in this study. The highest and lowest prevalence rates were estimated for latitudes of 0–10° (49.4%) and ≥50° (26.8%); and for the longitude of 80–90° (44.2%) and 110–120° (7.8%), respectively. Concerning climatic parameters, the highest and lowest prevalence rates were estimated in regions with the mean relative humidities of >80% (46.6%) and <40% (27.0); annual precipitation between 1000 and 1500 mm (39.2%) and 250–500 mm (26.8%); and mean annual temperature of 20–30 °C (36.5%), and <7 °C (24.9%), respectively. Meta-regression analyses indicated significant increasing trends in prevalence of CT in pregnant women with decrease in geographical latitude (coefficient, = −0.0035), and geographical longitudes (C = −0.0017). While it was positively associated (P < 0.01) with the mean environmental temperature (C = 0.0047), annual precipitation (C = 0.000064), and mean relative humidity (C = 0.002). Our results highlighted various effects of environmental parameters on the prevalence of CT. Therefore, different regions in the world may benefit from different types of interventions, and thus, novel preventive measures in a region should be developed according to local climate, agricultural activities and people culture.

The solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) at national, provincial and county levels in Iran during 2005–2019 were determined based on Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) dataset. The temporal (annual and monthly) trends and spatial distributions of the UVR in terms of erythemally weighted daily dose (EDD), erythemally weighted irradiance at local solar noon time (EDR), and UV index and the major factors influencing the spatiotemporal trends were analyzed. The population-weighted average values of EDD, EDR, and UV index in Iran were respectively 3631 J/m², 176.3 mW/m², 7.1 in 2005 and rose by 0.22% per year to 3744 J/m², 181.7 mW/m², and 7.3, respectively in 2019, but the annual trend was not statistically significant. The EDD in Iran during the study period exhibited the highest monthly average value in June (6339 J/m²) and the lowest one in December (1263 J/m²). The solar UVA/UVB ratios at the national level during 2005–2019 were considerably lower in summer. The EDD provincial average values in the study period were in the range of 2717 (Gilan) to 4424 J/m² (Fars). The spatiotemporal variations of the solar UVR parameters were well described by the linear models as a function of cloud optical thickness (COT), ozone column amount, surface albedo, latitude, and altitude (R² > 0.961, p value < 0.001) and the temporal changes of the solar UVR parameters were mainly caused by the COT. The results indicated that non-burning exposure to solar UVR in summer can be more efficient for vitamin D synthesis due to higher contribution of UVB in the solar UVR. The spatial distributions and temporal trends should be considered to determine the optimal duration, time and condition of exposure to the solar UVR for the public and occupational training and public health measures.

2021
Zhang, Chengxiang | Pei, Hongcui | Liu, Cunqi | Wang, Wei | Lei, Guangchun
Previous studies assessing excessive proliferation of phytoplankton (EPP) in lakes are generally based on single investigation and focused on limited environmental factors; meanwhile, less attention has been paid to lakes susceptibility to EPP. Here, we identify the priority of lakes for EPP control in a basin by assessing EPP in multiple lakes and identify the key factors related to lakes’ vulnerability to EPP. Field measurements, as well as multi-source survey data acquisition were conducted for 63 shallow lakes in the middle-lower Yangtze River basin. Resource-use efficiency by phytoplankton (RUE) was then used to represent lake susceptibility to EPP. Generalized linear models were used to assess the relative importance of environmental factors for RUE. We found that most lakes (76.19 %) were not suitable for recreation, due to health concern attributed to irritative or allergenic risk caused by EPP. Phosphorus was the primary limiting nutrient for EPP (74.60 % of lakes) which should be limited to < 0.09 mg/L. The linear model that included latitude, particulate matter 10, and precipitation explained 27.60 % of the variation of RUETP among lakes. In contrast, the linear model that included ozone, Secchi depth, and wind speed explained 19.41 % of the variation of RUETN among lakes. The key factor related to RUETP and RUETN was particulate matter 10 and ozone, respectively, both of which potentially increase RUE or reflect it. Our results suggest that integrating multiple survey datasets is critical for lakes EPP assessment in a basin, while lakes impacted by air pollution are a high priority for EPP control.

Sun, Jianfei | Wang, Minghui | Xu, Xiangrui | Cheng, Kun | Yue, Qian | Pan, Genxing
Quantifying methane (CH₄) emissions from paddy fields is essential for evaluating the environmental risks of the paddy rice production system, and improving the accuracy of CH₄ modeling is a key issue that needs to be addressed. Based on a database containing 835 field measurements, both single national and region-specific models were established to estimate CH₄ emissions from paddy fields considering different environmental factors and management patterns using 70% of the measurements. The remaining 30% of the measurements were then used for model evaluation. The performance of the region-specific model was better than that of the single national model. The region-specific model could simulate CH₄ emissions in an unbiased manner with R² values of 0.15–0.70 and efficiency values of 11–60%. The paddy rice type, water regime, organic amendment, latitude, and soil characteristics (pH and bulk density) were identified as the main drivers in the models. By inputting the high-resolution spatial data of these drivers into the established model, the CH₄ emissions from China’s paddy fields were estimated to be 4.75 Tg in 2015, with a 95% confidence interval of 4.19–5.61 Tg. The results indicated that establishing and driving a region-specific model with high-resolution data can improve the estimation accuracy of CH₄ emissions from paddy fields.

2020
Tian, Lu | Wang, Lin
Microbial community in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are affected by various environmental factors. The microbial communities from different WWTPs around world were compared by meta-analysis of the published high-throughput sequencing data of 16S rRNA of these WWTPs, the various environmental factors considered. Community richness indexes showed significant difference between altitude groups, and there was no latitudinal diversity gradient in WWTPs’ microbiomes. Climate was the most important influential factor and process was the second factor, and latitude and altitude contributed 5.51% and 4.78% of the overall variance of the data separately. Three significantly enriched bacterial communities in latitude and altitude respectively were showed by ternary plots. Mantel test illustrated that microbial community was strongly correlated with dissolved oxygen, temperature and pollutants concentrations. The prediction of potential functions revealed that microbial function structures were more stable than community structures. Some dominant bacteria in WWTPs have potential pathogenicity may pose serious threat to the environment and human health.
