This study was carried out for the purpose of investigating the issue of tailings dams as a potential source of contamination by trace elements in soils at the Sidi Bou Othmane mine in the Marrakech Region, Morocco. Soil samples taken from depths of up to 15 cm and within a radius of 50 m from the tailings dams, were analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn using atomic absorption spectrometry. Average concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in soils around the abandoned tailings dams were, respectively, 157.2±8.8, 969.1±38.7, 1640.7±42.7 and 2846.8±84.6 mg/kg. Soils in the vicinity of the decommissioned tailings dams registered increased values for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Contamination factors (CF) and pollution index (PI) were calculated in order to estimate the anthropogenic contribution of target pollutants which determined Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn as the main pollutants in this region. The results revealed the polluted areas in the vicinity of the mine, especially two rural communities apparently linked to the lack of appropriate measures to counteract the effects of these mine tailings, which were causing a progressive contamination of the soil with residues of heavy metal emissions in this region under study. Improved strategies for the management of tailings, among other factors, might have influenced the reduced level of contamination by trace elements at the abandoned mine tailings dam sites.

An in situ particle imaging system for measurement of high concentrations of suspended particles ranging from 30 μm to several mm in diameter, is presented. The system obtains quasi-silhouettes of particles suspended within an open-path sample volume of up to 5 cm in length. Benchmarking against spherical standards and the LISST-100 show good agreement, providing confidence in measurements from the system when extending beyond the size, concentration and particle classification capabilities of the LISST-100. Particle-specific transmittance is used to classify particle type, independent of size and shape. This is applied to mixtures of oil droplets, gas bubbles and oil-coated gas bubbles, to provide independent measures of oil and gas size distributions, concentrations, and oil-gas ratios during simulated subsea releases. Large quantities of lead/zinc (Pb/Zn) mine tailings were deposited at tailings impoundments without proper management, which have posed considerable risks to the local ecosystem and residents in mining areas worldwide. Therefore, the geochemical behaviors of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings were in–depth investigated in this study by a coupled use of batch kinetic tests, statistical analysis and mineralogical characterization. The results indicated that among these studied PTEs, Cd concentration fluctuated within a wide range of 0.83–6.91 mg/kg, and showed the highest spatial heterogeneity. The mean Cd concentrations generally increased with depth. Cd were mainly partitioned in the exchangeable and carbonate fractions. The release potential of PTEs from tailings was ranged as: Cd > Mn > Zn > Pb > As, Cd > Pb > Zn > Mn > As and Cd > Pb > Mn > Zn > As, respectively, under the assumed environmental scenarios, i.e. acid rain, vegetation restoration, human gastrointestinal digestion. The results from mineralogical characterization indicated that quartz, sericite, calcite and pyrite were typical minerals, cumulatively accounting for over 80% of the tailings. Sulfides (arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite), carbonates (calcite, dolomite, cerussite and kutnahorite), oxides (limonite) were identified as the most relevant PTEs–bearing phases, which significantly contributed to PTEs release from tailings. A combined result of statistical, geochemical and mineralogical approaches would be provided valuable information for the alteration characteristics and contaminant release of Pb/Zn mine tailings.

Bitumen recovery from oil sands in northeastern Alberta, Canada produces large volumes of tailings, which are deposited in mining areas that must be reclaimed upon mine closure. A new technology of non-segregated tailings (NST) developed by Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) was designed to accelerate the process of oil sands fine tailings consolidation. However, effects of these novel tailings on plants used for the reclamation of oil sands mining areas remain to be determined. In the present study, we investigated the effects of NST on seedlings of three species of plants commonly planted in oil sands reclamation sites including paper birch (Betula papyrifera), white spruce (Picea glauca) and green alder (Alnus viridis). In the controlled-environment study, we grew seedlings directly in NST and in the two types of reclamation soils with and without added NST and we measured seedling growth, gas exchange parameters, as well as tissue concentrations of selected elements and foliar chlorophyll. White spruce seedlings suffered from severe mortality when grown directly in NST and their needles contained high concentrations of Na. The growth and physiological processes were also inhibited by NST in green alder and paper birch. However, the addition of top soil and peat mineral soil mix to NST significantly improved the growth of plants, possibly due to a more balanced nutrient uptake. It appears that NST may offer some advantages in terms of site revegetation compared with the traditional oil sands tailings that were used in the past. The results also suggest that, white spruce may be less suitable for planting at reclamation sites containing NST compared with the two studied deciduous tree species.

Communities in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) are disproportionally affected by industrial pollution compared to more developed nations. This study evaluates the dispersal and associated health risk of contaminant-laden soil and dust at a copper (Cu) smelter in Tsumeb, Namibia. It is Africa’s only smelter capable of treating complex Cu ores that contain high arsenic (As) contents (<1%). The analyses focused on the primary trace elements associated with ore processing at the smelter: As, Cu, and lead (Pb). Portable X-Ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) of trace elements in soils (n = 83) and surface dust wipes (n = 80) showed that elemental contamination was spatially associated with proximity to smelter operations. Soil concentrations were below US EPA soil guidelines. Dust wipe values were elevated relative to sites distal from the facility and similar to those at other international smelter locations (As = 1012 μg/m² (95% CI 687–1337); Cu = 1838 μg/m² (95% CI 1191–2485); Pb = 1624 μg/m² (95% CI 862–2385)). Source apportionment for Pb contamination was assessed using Pb isotopic compositions (PbIC) of dust wipes (n = 22). These data revealed that the PbIC of 73% (n = 16/22) of these wipes corresponded to the PbIC of smelter slag and tailings, indicating contribution from industrial emissions to ongoing exposure risk. Modeling of carcinogenic risk showed that dust ingestion was the most important pathway, followed by inhalation, for both adults and children. Dermal contact to trace elements in dust was also determined to pose a carcinogenic risk for children, but not adults. Consequently, contemporary smelter operations remain an ongoing health risk to the surrounding community, in spite of recent efforts to improve emissions from the operations.

Industrial by-products provide materials for remediation measures. In this study, a silicon-iron amendment was prepared from residue originating from acid-extracted copper (Cu) tailings based on thermal activation at temperatures ranging from 550 °C to 1150 °C for 30 min with the use of additives (CaO, Na₂CO₃, NaOH). The remediation performance of the amendment was evaluated through soil incubation and greenhouse pot experiments with vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides). The results showed that the highest levels of soluble Si (6.11% of the total Si) and Fe (2.3% of the total Fe) in the amendment were achieved with thermal activation at 1150 °C for 30 min using an optimal ratio between residue and additives (residue: CaO: Na₂CO₃: NaOH = 1: 0.4: 0.4: 0.2). Heavy metal release indicated that the amendment could be safely used for soil remediation. The incubation experiments showed that the DTPA-extractable Cd, Cr and Pb in contaminated soils decreased with increasing amendment rate, which was not observed for As. The amendment-induced decrease in the Cd, Cr and Pb availability in contaminated soils could be explained by pH-change induced immobilization, Fe-induced chemisorption, Si-induced co-precipitation, and Ca-induced ion exchange. Correlation analysis suggested that there were significant negative correlations between DTPA-extractable Cd, Cr and Pb and the pH, Fe, Si, and Ca in soil pore water and soil. The most suitable amendment rate was determined to be 1% by balancing the efficacy and wise utilization of the amendment. The pot experiment demonstrated that the amendment promoted the vetiver growth and stimulated the accumulation of Cd and Cr in the roots. The amendment was proved to be promising for the phytostabilization of Cd, Cr and Pb in contaminated soils. Further investigations are required to determine whether the amendment is a tool for the long-term remediation of multi-metal-contaminated soils at the field scale.

Mine tailings contain toxic metals and can lead to serious pollutions of soil environment. Phytoremediation using legumes has been regarded as an eco-friendly way for the rehabilitation of tailings-laden lands but little is known about the changes of microbial structure during the process. In the present study, we monitored the dynamic change of microbiota in the rhizosphere of Pongamia pinnata during a 2-year on-site remediation of vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings. After remediation, overall soil health conditions were significantly improved as increased available N and P contents and enzyme activities were discovered. There was also an increase of microbial carbon and nitrogen contents. The Illumina sequencing technique revealed that the abundance of taxa under Proteobacteria was increased and rhizobia-related OTUs were preferentially enriched. A significant difference was discovered for sample groups before and after remediation. Rhizobium and Nordella were identified as the keystone taxa at genus rank. Functional predictions indicated that nitrogen fixation was enhanced, corresponding well with qPCR results which showed a significant increase of nifH gene copy numbers by the 2nd year. Our findings for the first time elucidated that legume phytoremediation can effectively cause microbial communities to shift in favour of rhizobia in heavy metal contaminated soil.

Hardpans are massively indurated layers formed at the top layer of sulfidic tailings dams, which develop cementation structures and result in heavy metal immobilization. However, the micro-structural and complex forms of the cementing materials are not fully understood, as well as the mechanisms by which Zn and Pb are stabilized in the hardpans. The present study deployed synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) to have characterized the cementing structures, examined the distribution of Fe, Zn and Pb, and obtained laterally-resolved speciation of Zn within the hardpans using fluorescence X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) imaging. The XFM analyses revealed that the Fe-rich cement layers consisted of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides coupled with amorphous Si materials, immobilizing Zn and Pb. Through laterally-resolved XANES imaging analyses, Zn-ferrihydrite-like precipitates were predicted to account for >76% of the total Zn within the Fe-rich cement layers. In contrast, outside of the cement layers, 9–63% of the Zn was estimated as labile ZnSO4.7H2O, with the remainder in the form of Zn-sulfide. These findings demonstrated that the Fe-rich cement layers were critical in immobilizing Zn and Pb within hardpans via mineral passivation and encapsulation, as the basis for long-term geochemical stability in the hardpan layer of sulfidic mine tailings.

While determining the uranium concentration in the rock (background level) and soils on the Iberian Massif of western Spain, several geochemical anomalies were observed. The uranium concentration was much higher than the geochemical levels at these locations, and several uranium minerals were detected. The proposed uranium background levels for natural soils in the west of Salamanca Province (Spain) are 29.8 mg kg−1 in granitic rock and 71.2 mg kg−1 in slate. However, the soil near the tailings of abandoned mines exhibited much higher concentrations, between 207.2 and 542.4 mg kg−1.The calculation of different pollution indexes (Pollution Factor and Geo-accumulation Index), which reveal the conditions in the superficial horizons of the natural soils, indicated that a good percentage of the studied samples (16.7–56.5%) are moderately contaminated. The spatial distribution of the uranium content in natural soils was analysed by applying the inverse distance weighted method.The distribution of uranium through the horizons of the soils shows a tendency to accumulate in the horizons with the highest clay content. The leaching of uranium from the upper horizons and accumulation in the lower horizons of the soil could be considered a process for natural attenuation of the surface impacts of this radiogenic element in the environment. Environmental restoration is proposed in the areas close to the abandoned mining facilities of this region, given the high concentration of uranium. First, all the tailings and other mining waste would be covered with a layer of impermeable material to prevent leaching by runoff. Then, a layer of topsoil with organic amendments would be added, followed by revegetation with herbaceous plants to prevent surface erosion.

There is considerable interest in applying omics techniques, which have proven extremely valuable for laboratory-based toxicology studies, towards field-scale ecotoxicology and environmental monitoring. Concerns that confounding factors in natural ecosystems may exacerbate variability in omics datasets must be addressed to validate the transition from laboratory to field. This study explores how temporal variability related to seasonal and climatic trends influence qualitative and quantitative metabolomics outcomes, in fish from reference and metal(loid)-polluted wetlands in Australia. Female mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) were sampled on two separate occasions, from a rehabilitated tailings wetland at the site of historic antimony (Sb) processing and a reference wetland with comparable water quality. The first sampling coincided with greater monthly rainfall and colder water temperature, whereas the second sampling was drier and water was warmer. Despite temporal changes and associated differences in metal(loid) concentrations, site differences in metabolite profiles were qualitatively very similar between sampling events. However, quantitative differences were observed, with a greater number of significantly altered metabolites identified during the second sampling event, which coincided with greater metal(loid) concentrations in both water and fish. The majority of identified metabolites were elevated in fish from the contaminated wetland, but with notable decreases in several metabolites that are known to play a role in various aspects of metal(loid) binding, detoxification and excretion. Specifically, decreased aspartate, histidine, myo-inositol, taurine and choline were observed in fish from the contaminated wetland, and may therefore represent a metabolite suite that is broadly indicative of metal toxicity. Quantitative differences between sampling events are suggestive of a dose-response relationship observable at the cellular level which, if harnessed, may be useful for assigning levels of concern based on the degree of change in a multi-parameter set of metabolite biomarkers.
