Mineralogy studies can help understand the interactions of geographical, environmental, and geological factors. Considering frequent occurrence of urinary tract stones in the south and west of Iran, the present paper examines trace elements, like heavy metals, in 53 urine stone samples collected from patients in Lorestan Province. It investigates the mineralogy of the stones, using X-ray diffraction. The samples are then classified into five mineral groups (calcium oxalate, urate, cysteine, calcium oxalate-urate, and calcium oxalate/phosphate). Results from this analysis are confirmed by SEM images, showing the crystalline form of the mineral phases. The microscopic studies show that only the mineral group of calcium oxalate (whewellite) could be detected in thin sections, prepared from urinary tract stone samples. The main and trace elements in each group are determined through ICP-MS method with the results showing that calcium is the most abundant substance in urinary tract stones, compared to other elements. This is caused by the role of calcium in most basic functions of cell metabolism. The correlation between magnesium and strontium is 0.64, originated from the placement of high amounts of strontium in calcium oxalate minerals. The positive correlation between sodium and calcium also indicates that sodium is replaced by calcium due to the similarity of the ionic radius in the crystal structure. Results from this study can help us find the causes behind the frequent occurrence of urinary tract stones in Lorestan Province.

Excess exposure to fluoride causes substantive health burden in humans and livestock globally. However, few studies have assessed the distribution and controls of variability of ambient background concentrations of fluoride in soil. Ambient background concentrations of fluoride in soil were collated for Greater Melbourne, Greater Geelong, Ballarat and Mitchell in Victoria, Australia (n = 1005). Correlation analysis and machine learning techniques were used to identify environmental and anthropogenic influences of fluoride variability in soil. Sub-soils (>0.3 m deep), in some areas overlying siltstone and sandstone, and to a lesser extent, overlying basalt, were naturally enriched with fluoride at concentrations above ecological thresholds for grazing animals. Soil fluoride enrichment was predominantly influenced by parent material (mineralogy), precipitation (illuviation), leaching during palaeoclimates and marine inputs. Industrial air pollution did not significantly influence ambient background concentrations of fluoride at a regional scale. However, agricultural practices (potentially the use of phosphate fertilisers) were indicated to have resulted in added fluoride to surface soils overlying sediments. Geospatial variables alone were not sufficient to accurately model ambient background soil fluoride concentrations. A multiple regression model based on soil chemistry and parent material was shown to accurately predict ambient background fluoride concentrations in soils and support assessment of fluoride enrichment in the environment.

Despite common knowledge that the metal content adsorbed by fine particles is relatively higher compared to coarser particles, the reasons for this phenomenon have gained little research attention. The research study discussed in the paper investigated the variations in metal content for different particle sizes of solids associated with pollutant build-up on urban road surfaces. Data analysis confirmed that parameters favourable for metal adsorption to solids such as specific surface area, organic carbon content, effective cation exchange capacity and clay forming minerals content decrease with the increase in particle size. Furthermore, the mineralogical composition of solids was found to be the governing factor influencing the specific surface area and effective cation exchange capacity. There is high quartz content in particles >150 μm compared to particles <150 μm. As particle size reduces below 150 μm, the clay forming minerals content increases, providing favourable physical and chemical properties that influence adsorption.

Children in urban environments are exposed to potential harmful elements (PHEs) through variable exposure media. Playing activities in outdoor playgrounds have been considered of high concern due to children's exposure to sand-bound PHEs through unintentional or intentional sand ingestion. Furthermore, the affinity of magnetic particles with dust-bound PHEs in playgrounds has been reported. In this study, playground sands (PG sands) from public playgrounds in the city of Thessaloniki, N. Greece were sampled and the levels, the contamination degree, oral bioaccessibility and exposure assessment of PHEs were evaluated. In addition, low-cost and fast magnetic measurements (i.e. mass specific magnetic susceptibility, χₗf) were explored as potential pollution and health risk proxies. Mineralogically, siliceous PG sands dominated, while morphologically angular magnetic particles and Fe-rich “spherules” of anthropogenic origin were revealed and verified by enhanced χₗf values. The average total elemental contents exhibited a descending order of Mn > Ba > Cr > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cu > Co > As > Sn > Bi > Cd, however only Cd, Bi, Pb, Cr, As and Zn were presented anthropogenically enhanced. Notable increase on PHEs levels and finer sand fractions were observed with continuous sand use. Anthropogenically derived elements (i.e. Cd and Pb with high Igₑₒ values) exhibited higher bioaccessible fractions in PG sands and considered easily soluble in gastric fluids through ingestion. However, increased risks were found for specific PHEs (especially Pb) only in a worst case exposure scenario of an intentional sand ingestion (pica disorder). Statistical analysis results revealed a linkage of anthropogenic components with sand-bound magnetic particles. Moreover, the recorded high affinity of Pb contents (in an enhanced magnetized sub-set of PG sands) and bioaccessible Cd fractions with χₗf provide a preliminary indication on the successful applicability of low-cost and fast magnetic measurements in high impacted playground environments.

Soils containing a large proportion of industrial waste can pose a health risk due to high environmentally available concentrations of toxic metal(loid)s. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and amorphous manganese oxide (AMO) were applied as immobilising amendments (1 wt%) to soils with different industrial origin of As and Sb, and leaching of As, Sb, Pb, and Zn was investigated using a single extraction with deionised water. The different industrial impact was reflected in the mineralogy, chemical composition and pH of these soils. Water-soluble As ratios positively correlated with pH in all experimental treatments. A significant decrease of water-soluble As ratios was observed in all nZVI-amended soils (~65–93% of the control) except for one sample with the lowest solution pH. Nano zero-valent iron was also successful in Sb immobilisation (~76–90% of the control). Highly variable results were obtained for AMO, which only led to a decrease of water-soluble As in soils with solution pH of ≥7 (~70–80% of the control), probably due to lower stability of AMO in acidic conditions. In each case, nZVI was more efficient at decreasing water-soluble As ratios than AMO. Dissolved Pb concentrations remained unchanged after the application of nZVI and AMO, and the decrease of Zn leaching using AMO was controlled mainly by soil pH increase induced by its application. According to the calculated saturation indices, tripuhyite (FeSbO₄) was predicted to be the key mineral controlling Sb solubility in mine soils. Secondary Fe (hydr)oxides either originally present or newly formed due to nZVI oxidation were instrumentally identified at different stages of their transformation and metal(loid) retention. To conclude, nZVI is suitable for application to contaminated soils at a wide pH range, while the use of AMO for decreasing As leaching is limited to soils with pH ≥ 7.

Size and magnetic separation of incineration bottom ash (IBA) are common for ferrous metals recovery, however, their influences on the mineral phase and the element redistribution, and subsequently the induced variation of metal leaching potential herein remain limited understanding. The lack of research in this field may misunderstand IBA performances, cause confused results for comparison among various studies, and potentially lead to biased conclusions. We herein quantitatively investigate the effects of size and magnetic separation on the IBA based on element distribution, leaching behavior, morphology, and mineralogy with statistical analysis. For preparation, sieving was performed with the original IBA (to obtain 7 size-fractions termed as OR1-7, respectively), followed by magnetic separation of each, to further yield magnetic fractions (MF1-7) to discriminate nonmagnetic fractions (NF1-7). In this study, we show that size and magnetic separation may pose significant yet different impacts on different fractions, which would affect their leaching potential concerning their respective downstream applications.

In this study, total concentration and inhalation bioaccessibility (dissolution in simulated biological solution) of trace elements (TE) and rare earth elements (REE) were assessed in PM₁₀ from Canadian house dust samples with smoking (n = 25) and non-smoking (n = 25) status. Compared to the natural background concentrations in Canadian soils, median Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu concentrations in PM₁₀ were 10–23 fold higher, while median La, Ce and Pr concentrations were 1.6–2.4 fold higher. Mann-Whitney tests (α = 0.05) indicated no difference between the median TE concentrations based on the smoking status of the household; however, median REE concentrations were significantly higher in the PM₁₀ of smoking households. Additionally, Cd and Ni were positively correlated (Spearman r, p < 0.05) to La, Ce and Nd in smoking households, suggesting that tobacco combustion may have contributed REE in the PM₁₀ of these households. Median inhalation-ingestion bioaccessibility assay outcomes of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) was higher in the non-smoking households when compared to smoking households (Mann Whitney test, α = 0.05), suggesting that tobacco combustion products may be associated with less soluble species of As and Pb. Although REE bioaccessibility was negligible in simulated lung epithelial fluid regardless of the smoking status of the household, bioaccessibility in the lung-gastric phase was 23.6–27.6% in the smoking household and 34.7–36.7% in the non-smoking households, indicating a significantly lower REE dissolution in PM₁₀ of smoking households. In contrast, between 17 and 21.9% bioaccessibility of REE was observed when artificial lysosomal fluid was used, where the outcome was not significantly affected by the smoking status. This study indicates that despite a higher median REE concentration in the PM₁₀ of smoking households, inhalation bioaccessibility may be significantly influenced by the mineralogy.

In compliance to European Union directives to reuse urban wastes as secondary fuels, the aim of present work was to investigate and control the environmental impact from disposal of ashes generated by combustion of a bio-solid, an olive by-product and their blend. Two waste materials were admixed with the ash and their performance as potential stabilizers was assessed. Metals and ions leached through a soil were measured.The results showed that dissolution of some alkaline substances raised the pH of water effluents, decreasing the extractability of heavy metals from the ashes. In some cases Cr and As leached reached hazardous levels. Upon addition of waste materials to ash, the concentration of Cr in liquid extracts was reduced by 35–97%, while that of Cu and As by 100%. All heavy metal values measured in the leachates were decreased to values below legislation limits. The mineralogy, the chemistry and the pH of solids involved were key factors for the retention of elements.
