The use of dynamic membranes as a low-cost alternative for conventional membrane for the treatment of landfill leachate (LFL) was investigated in this study. For this purpose a lab-scale, submerged pre-anoxic and post-aerobic bioreactor configuration was used with nylon mesh as dynamic membrane support. The study was conducted at ambient temperature and LFL was fed to the bioreactor in gradually increasing concentration mixed with tap water (from 20% to 100%). The results of this study demonstrated that lower mesh pore size of 52 μm achieved better results in terms of solid-liquid separation performance (turbidity <10 NTU) of the formed dynamic membrane layer as compared to 200 and 85 μm meshes while treating LFL. Consistently high NH₄⁺-N conversion efficiency of more than 98% was achieved under all nitrogen loading conditions, showing effectiveness of the formed dynamic membrane in retaining slow growing nitrifying species. Total nitrogen removal reached more than 90% however, the denitrification activity showed a fluctuating profile and found to be inhibited by elevated concentrations of free nitrous acid and NO₂⁻-N at low pH values inside the anoxic bioreactor. A detailed metagenomic analysis allowed a taxonomic investigation over time and revealed the potential biochemical pathways involved in NH₄⁺-N conversion. This study led to the identification of a dynamic system in which nitrite concentration is determined by the contribution of NH₄⁺ oxidizers (Nitrosomonas), and by a competition between nitrite oxidizers (Nitrospira and Nitrobacter) and reducers (Thauera).

This study aimed to elucidate the boundaries of ammonia and organic loading rates that allow for nitritation in continuous flow phosphorylated-polyvinyl alcohol entrapped cell reactors and to clarify the community structure of microorganisms involving nitrogen transformation in the gel bead matrices. At operating bulk dissolved oxygen concentration of 2 mg/L, nitritation was accomplished when the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) loading rate was ≥ 0.3 kgN/m³/d. At TAN loading rates of ≤ 0.2 kgN/m³ /d, complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate took place. Nitritation performance dropped with increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) loading rates indicating limitation of nitritation reactor operation at some COD loading conditions. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that the uncultured Cytophagaceae bacterium, Arenimonas, Truepera, Nitrosomonas, Comamonas, unclassified Soil Crenarchaeotic Group, and uncultured Chitinophagaceae bacterium were highly abundant taxa in the reactors’ gel bead matrices. qPCR with specific primers targeting amoA genes demonstrated the coexistence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and Comammox in the gel bead matrices. AOB was likely the main functioning ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms due to the amoA gene being of highest abundance in most of the studied conditions. Nitrite-oxidizing microorganisms presented in less relative abundance than ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, with Nitrobacter rather than Nitrospira dominating in the group. Results obtained from this study are expected to further the application of nitritation entrapped cell reactors to real wastewater treatment processes.

Biological wastewater treatment using biofilm systems is an effective way to treat difficult wastewater, such as coke wastewater. The information about the structure and the dynamics of this microbial community in biofilm, which are responsible for wastewater treatment, is relevant in the context of treatment efficacy and the biochemical potential to remove various pollutants. However, physico-chemical factors can influence the biofilm community significantly, causing performance disturbances. Therefore, we decided to examine the structure of microbial community in rotating biological contactor (RBC) biofilm during coke wastewater treatment and to investigate the possible shift in the community structure caused by the feeding medium change from synthetic to real coke wastewater. The experiment performed with high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed that bacteria commonly present in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) systems, responsible for nitrite oxidizing, such as Nitrospira or Nitrobacter, were absent or below detection threshold, while Nitrosomonas, responsible for ammonia oxidizing, was detected in a relatively small number especially after shift to real coke wastewater. This research indicates that medium change could cause the change from autotrophic into heterotrophic nitrification led by Acinetobacter. Moreover, biofilm systems can be also a potential source of bacteria possessing high biochemical potential for pollutants removal but less known in WWTP systems, as well as potentially pathogenic microorganisms.

To ensure microbial activity and a reaction equilibrium with efficiency and energy saving, it is important to know the factors that influence microbiological nitrogen removal in wastewater. Thus, it was investigated the microorganisms and their products involved in the treatment of kennel effluents operated with different aeration times, phase 1 (7 h of continuous daily aeration), phase 2 (5 h of continuous daily aeration), and phase 3 (intermittent aeration every 2 h), monitoring chemical and physical parameters weekly, monthly microbiological, and qualitative and quantitative microbiological analyzes at the end of each applied aeration phase. The results showed a higher mean growth of nitrifying bacteria (NB) (10⁶) and denitrifying bacteria (DB) (10²²) in phase with intermittent aeration, in which better total nitrogen (TN) removal performance, with 33%, was achieved, against 21% in phase 1 and 17% in phase 2, due to the longer aeration time and lower carbon/nitrogen ratio (15.7), compared with the other phases. The presence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), the genus Nitrobacter nitrite–oxidizing bacteria (NOB), and DB were detected by PCR with specific primers at all phases. The analysis performed by 16S-rRNA DGGE revealed the genres Thauera at all phases; Betaproteobacteria and Acidovorax in phase 3; Azoarcus in phases 2 and 3; Clostridium, Bacillus, Lactobacillus, Turicibacter, Rhodopseudomonas, and Saccharibacteria in phase 1, which are related to the nitrogen removal, most of them by denitrifying. It is concluded that, with the characterization of the microbial community and the analysis of nitrogen compounds, it was determined, consistently, that the studied treatment system has microbiological capacity to remove TN, with the phase 3 aeration strategy, by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND). Due to the high density of DB, most of the nitrification occurred by heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic. And denitrification occurred by heterotrophic and autotrophic forms, since the higher rate of oxygen application did not harm the DB. Therefore, the aeration and carbon conditions in phase 3 favored the activity of the microorganisms involved in these different routes. It is considered that, in order to increase autotrophic nitrification-aerobic, it is necessary to exhaust the volume of sludge in the secondary settlers (SD), further reducing the carbon/nitrogen ratio, through more frequent cleaning, whose periodicity should be the object of further studies. Ammonia emission during composting results in anthropogenic odor nuisance and reduces the agronomic value of the compost due to the loss of nitrogen. Adjusting the operating parameters during composting is an emerging in situ odor control technique that is cheap and highly efficient. The effects of in situ NH₃ emission control were investigated in this study by simultaneously adjusting key operating parameters (such as C/N ratio, aeration rate, and moisture content) during the composting processes (C1–C9). Results showed that the average NH₃ emission concentrations for different treatments were in the order of C1 > C4 > C2 > C5 > C3 > C6 > C7 > C8 > C9. The total content of NH₃ emission (21.02 g/kg) in C9 (C/N ratio = 35, aeration rate = 15 L/min, and moisture content = 60%) was much lower than that (65.95 g/kg) in C1 (C/N ratio = 15, aeration rate = 5 L/min, and moisture content = 60%). The nitrogen loss ratio was 27.36% for C1, while 16.15% for C9. The microbial diversity and abundance in C9 and C1 were compared using high-throughput sequencing. The relationship between NH₃ emission, operating parameters, and the related functional microbial communities was also investigated. Results revealed that Nitrosospira, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Pseudomonas, Methanosaeta, Rhodobacter, Paracoccus, and Sphingobacterium were negatively related to NH₃ emission. According to the above results, the optimal values for different operating parameters for the in situ NH₃ control during kitchen waste composting were, respectively, moisture content of 70%, C/N ratio of 35, and aeration rate of 15 L/min, with the order of effectiveness from high to low being aeration rate > C/N > moisture. This information could be used as a valuable reference for the in situ NH₃ emission control during kitchen waste composting.

The biological treatment of ammonia-rich landfill leachates due to an inadequate C to N ratio requires expensive supplementation of carbon from an external carbon source. In an effort to reduce treatment costs, the objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of nitrogen removal via the nitrite pathway during landfill leachate co-treatment with municipal wastewater. Initially, the laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was inoculated with nitrifying activated sludge and fed only raw municipal wastewater (RWW) during a start-up period of 9 weeks. Then, in the co-treatment period, consisting of the next 17 weeks, the system was fed a mixture of RWW and an increasing quantity of landfill leachates (from 1 to 10 % by volume). The results indicate that landfill leachate addition of up to 10 % (by volume) influenced the effluent quality, except for BOD₅. During the experiment, a positive correlation (r² = 0.908) between ammonia load in the influent and nitrite in the effluent was observed, suggesting that the second step of nitrification was partially inhibited. The partial nitrification (PN) was also confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) analysis of nitrifying bacteria. Nitrogen removal via the nitrite pathway was observed when the oxygen concentration ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 mg O₂/dm³and free ammonia (FA) ranged from 2.01 to 35.86 mg N-NH₃/dm³in the aerobic phase. Increasing ammonia load in wastewater influent was also correlated with an increasing amount of total nitrogen (TN) in the effluent, which suggested insufficient amounts of assimilable organic carbon to complete denitrification. Because nitrogen removal via the nitrite pathway is beneficial for carbon-limited and highly ammonia-loaded mixtures, obtaining PN can lead to a reduction in the external carbon source needed to support denitrification.

The paper analyses application of different methods for removal of the high content of ammonia from groundwater sources of the Grocka municipality neighborhoods Umcari and Pudarci. According to the relevant data from this field method, biochemical oxidation with the Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria was used. Parameters of biological processes of the ammonia oxidation were defined on the pilot model located at the groundwater source. On the pilot model, consisting of a trickling filter and a fast gravel filter, quantitative oxidation NH4 to NO3 was done. Purification plant was designed with parameters of the pilot model, with minimal investment and exploitation expenses, without undesired side products and ecological risks characteristic for procedure of chemical oxidation of ammonia, which recommends this procedure as the optimal solution.
