Over three different seasons, seawater, porewater and sediment samples were collected from Jinzhou Bay, a previously heavily contaminated bay, to quantitatively assess the benthic flux of trace metals after a reduction in fluvial/sewage discharge for almost three decades. The spatial distribution patterns of trace metals in seawater, surface sediment, as well as the vertical distribution patterns of metals in porewater and solid phases in short sediment cores were reported. Metal concentrations in seawater and sediment all showed much higher Cd and Zn concentrations inside the Jinzhou Bay compared to the rest of Bohai Sea area. Zn, Ni, Pb and Co all had average benthic fluxes coming out of the sediments to the water column, contributing about 0.5%, 0.3%, 1.4% and 14% to their current standing stock in Jinzhou Bay. Seasonal difference was also identified in seawater and porewater, as well as in the benthic fluxes. In general, benthic fluxes and porewater concentrations all tended to be higher in summer, implying a close relationship between benthic flux and the temperature-dependent organic matter degradation process at the sediment-water interface.Currently, there are clearly still other sources, possibly fluvial/sewage discharge, as the main source of trace metals in Jinzhou Bay waters. For Cd and Cu, concentrations in the water column remain high on an annual basis indicating that sediment still acts as a sink. Conversely, for Pb, Zn, Co, and Ni, the sediment is beginning to act as a source to the water column. Although this may not yet be significant, it will become more and more important with time, and can last for hundreds to thousands of years.

Membrane concentrated landfill leachate (MCLL) contains large amounts of recalcitrant organic matter that cause potential hazards to the environment. Knowledge on the compositional variation of MCLL during treatment is important for a better understanding on the degradation pathway of organic pollutants. In this work, the structural change of MCLL during Fenton oxidation process was examined using spectroscopic techniques. The removal rates of COD, TOC and UV254 reached 78.9 ± 1.3%, 70.2 ± 1.4% and 90.64 ± 1.6%, respectively, under the optimal condition (i.e., dosage of H2O2 = 9.0 mL/200 mL, H2O2/Fe(II) molar ratio = 3.0, pH = 3.0, time = 40 min). Spectral analyses suggested that aromatic/CC structure and CO bonds in MCLL can be successfully destroyed by Fenton oxidation, resulting in a decrease in molecular weight. One fulvic-like and one humic-like components were identified in MCLL, both of which can be removed by Fenton treatment. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analyses suggested the oxidative changes of MCLL structure in the order of fulvic-like component/unsaturated conjugated bond > aromatic structure > humic-like component. The results may provide a new insight to the understanding on the structure variation of MCLL during treatment, which is beneficial for the design of cost-effective treatment strategies.

Environmental pollution by heavy metals (HMs) has raised considerable attention due to their toxic impacts on plants, animals and human beings. Thus, the environmental cleanup of these toxic (HMs) is extremely urgent both from the environmental and biological point of view. To remediate HMs-polluted environment, several nanoparticles (NPs) such as metals and its oxides, carbon materials, zeolites, and bimetallic NPs have been documented. Among these, Fe-based NPs have emerged as an effective choice for remediating environmental contamination, due to infinite size, high reactivity, and adsorption properties. This review summarizes the utilization of various Fe-based NPs such as nano zero-valent iron (NZVI), modified-NZVI, supported-NZVI, doped-NZVI, and Fe oxides and hydroxides in remediating the HMs-polluted environment. It presents a comprehensive elaboration on the possible reaction mechanisms between the Fe-based NPs and heavy metals, including adsorption, oxidation/reduction, and precipitation. Subsequently, the environmental factors (e.g., pH, organic matter, and redox) affecting the reactivity of the Fe-based NPs with heavy metals are also highlighted in the current study. Research shows that Fe-based NPs can be toxic to living organisms. In this context, this review points out the environmental hazards associated with the application of Fe-based NPs and proposes future recommendations for the utilization of these NPs.

The desorption rate is an important factor determining cadmium (Cd) ecotoxicity and pollution remediation in soils. The pedotransfer functions (PTFs) of desorption rate coefficients of fresh Cd in soils have been developed in literature. We hypothesized that the aging of Cd pollution would alter Cd desorption process. Taking historically polluted soils as the object, this study aimed at testing the hypothesis and developing new PTFs of desorption rate coefficients for historical Cd. 15 d batch extraction experiments and 13 kinetic models were employed to define Cd desorption rate coefficients in 27 historically polluted soil samples. Compared with fresh Cd, the desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were lower, and the break time of biphasic desorption processes was retarded to 3 d (4320 min). Different with the usual models for fresh Cd desorption (e.g. parabolic diffusion and two constant rate models), the best models to mimic the historical Cd desorption processes were the pseudo first order, logarithmic, Elovich, and simple Elovich models. The rate-limiting step controlling Cd desorption was changed from the intraparticle diffusion to the interface reaction with aging of pollution. New PTFs of desorption rate coefficients of historical Cd were established (R² ≥ 0.71). Cd desorption rate coefficients increased with organic matter and clay contents, but decreased with oxalate extractable Fe content, solution pH, cation exchange capacity, and silt content. The key soil properties influencing desorption rate coefficients were not altered by the aging of pollution. The developed PTFs could guide us to adjusting the ecotoxicity and pollution remediation of Cd in historically polluted field soils.

The soybean processing wastewater (SPW) supplementation to facilitate the simultaneously treatment (SPW and mesosulfuron-methyl) of wastewater and production of biological substances by Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides (R. sphaeroides) was discussed. Compared with the control group, with the addition of SPW, mesosulfuron-methyl was removed, and the yields of single-cell proteins, carotenoids, and bacteriochlorophyll were increased. In the 3 mg/L dose group, the mesosulfuron-methyl removal rate reached 97% after 5 days. Molecular analysis revealed that mesosulfuron-methyl exhibited induction effects on expression of the cpm gene and regulation effects on the synthesis of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450) by activating HKs gene in TCS signal transduction pathway. For R. sphaeroides, this induction process required 1 day. The synthesis of P450 occurred 1 day after inoculation. Prior to expressing cpm gene and synthesizing P450, R. sphaeroides need a period of time to adapt to external mesosulfuron-methyl stimulation. However, the R. sphaeroides growth could not be maintained for more than 1 day due to the lack of organic matter in the raw wastewater. The SPW supplementation provided a sufficient carbon source in four groups with added SPW. After 5 days, R. sphaeroides became the dominant microflora in the wastewater. This new method could complete the treatment of mixed wastewater, the increased of biological substances output and the reuse of wastewater and R. sphaeroides cells as resources at the same time.

Biofumigation is an effective, non-chemical method to control soil-borne pests and diseases and to maximize crop yield. We studied the responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities, the soil’s nutritional state and strawberry yield, when the soil was biofumigated each year for five consecutive years using fresh chicken manure (BioFum). BioFum significantly increased the soil’s NH4+-N, NO3−-N, available P and K and organic matter. Fusarium spp. and Phytophthora spp. which are known to cause plant disease, were significantly decreased after BioFum. In addition, Biofum increased the soil’s temperature, enhanced chlorophyll levels in the leaves of strawberry plants, and the soluble sugar and ascorbic acid content in strawberry fruit. We used high-throughput gene sequencing to monitor changes in the soil’s bacterial and fungal communities. Although BioFum significantly decreased the diversity of these communities, it increased the relative abundance of some biological control agents in the phylum Actinobacteria and the genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Chaetomium. An increase in these biological control agents would reduce the incidence of soil-borne pathogens and plant disease. Although strawberry marketable yield using BioFum was higher in the first three years, the decline in the final two years could be due to the accumulation of P and K which may have delayed flowering and fruiting. Methods to overcome yield losses using BioFum need to be developed in the future. Our research, however, showed that BioFum enhanced soil fertility, reduced the presence of soil pathogens, increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and fungi and improved strawberry quality. Unlike chemical soil treatments that can cause pest and disease resistance when used continuously over many years, our multi-year research program on BioFum showed that this treatment provided significant benefits to the soil, plant and strawberry fruit.

Soils have the ability to modify contaminant bioavailability and toxicity. Prediction the modifying effect of soil on arsenic phytoaccumulation and phytoavailability using either soil property data or soil chemical extraction data in risk assessment of contaminated soil is highly desirable. In this study, plant bioassays important to ecological receptors, were conducted with 20 soils with a wide range in chemical and physical soil properties to determine the relationships between As measured by soil chemical extraction (soil pore water, Bray-1, sodium phosphate solution, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and acid ammonium oxalate) or soil physico/chemical properties on arsenic phytotoxicity and phytoaccumulation. Soil pore water As and Bray-1 extracted As were significantly (P < 0.01) correlated with lettuce tissue As and those extractants and sodium phosphate were correlated with ryegrass tissue As. Hydroxylamine and acid ammonium oxalate extractions did not correlate with plant bioassay endpoints. Simple regression results showed that lettuce tissue relative dry matter growth (RDMG) was inversely related to tissue As concentration (r² = 0.85, P < 0.01), with no significant relationship for ryegrass. Soil clay exhibited strong adsorption for As and significantly reduce tissue As for lettuce and ryegrass. In addition to clay content, reactive aluminum oxide (AlOx), reactive Fe oxide (FeOx) and eCEC was inversely related to ryegrass tissue As. Multiple regression equation was strongly predictive (r² = 0.83) for ryegrass tissue As (log transformed) using soil AlOx, organic matter, pH, and eCEC as variables. Soil properties can greatly reduce contaminant phytoavailability, plant exposure and risk, which should be considered when assessing contaminant exposure and site-specific risk in As-contaminated soils.

Periphyton plays a significant role in heavy metal transfer in wetlands, but its contribution to cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in paddy fields remains largely unexplored. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of periphyton on Cd behavior in paddy fields. Periphyton significantly decreased Cd concentrations in paddy waters. Non-invasive micro-test technology analyses indicated that periphyton can absorb Cd from water with a maximum Cd²⁺ influx rate of 394 pmol cm⁻² s⁻¹ and periphyton intrusion significantly increased soil Cd concentrations. However, soil Cd bioavailability declined significantly due to soil pH increase and soil redox potential (Eh) decrease induced by periphyton. With periphyton, more Cd was adsorbed and immobilized on organic matter, carbonates, and iron and manganese oxides in soil. Consequently, Cd content in rice decreased significantly. These findings give insights into Cd biogeochemistry in paddy fields with periphyton, and may provide a novel strategy for reducing Cd accumulation in rice.

2020
Varol, Memet
The Sürgü Stream, located in the Euphrates River basin of Turkey, is used for drinking water source, agricultural irrigation and rainbow trout production. Therefore, water quality of the stream is of great importance. In this study, multivariate statistical techniques (MSTs) and water quality index (WQI) were applied to assess water quality of the stream affected by multiple stressors such as untreated domestic sewage, effluents from fish farms, agricultural runoff and streambank erosion. For this, 16 water quality parameters at five sites along the stream were monitored monthly during one year. Most of parameters showed significant spatial variations, indicating the influence of anthropogenic activities. All parameters except TN (total nitrogen) showed significant seasonal differences due to high seasonality in WT (water temperature) and water flow. The spatial variations in the WQI were significant (p < 0.05) and the mean WQI values ranged from 87.6 to 95.3, indicating “good” to “excellent” water quality in the stream. Cluster analysis classified five sites into three groups, that is, clean region, low polluted region and very clean region. Stepwise temporal discriminant analysis (DA) identified that pH, WT, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, COD (chemical oxygen demand), TSS (total suspended solids) and Ca²⁺ are the parameters responsible for variations between seasons, and stepwise spatial DA identified that DO (dissolved oxygen), EC (electrical conductivity), NH₄–N, TN (total nitrogen) and TSS are the parameters responsible for variations between the regions. Principal component analysis/factor analysis revealed that the parameters responsible for water quality variations were mainly associated with suspended solids (both natural and anthropogenic), soluble salts (natural) and nutrients and organic matter (anthropogenic).

2020
Zhao, Fangkai | Chen, Liding | Yang, Lei | Sun, Long | Li, Shoujuan | Li, Min | Feng, Qingyu
Veterinary antibiotics have been detected as contaminants of emerging concern in soil environment worldwide. Animal manure is frequently applied to agricultural fields to improve soil fertility, which can result in introducing large amount of antibiotics into soil environment. However, few attempts have been made to identify the spatial and temporal dynamics of veterinary antibiotics in soil at the hillslope scale with different land uses. This study was performed to explore the pattern and variability of veterinary antibiotics in the soil in response to rainfall events. Results showed that higher concentrations of veterinary antibiotics were generally found in cropland (292.6 ± 280.1 ng/g) and orchard (228.1 ± 230.5 ng/g) than in forestland (13.5 ± 9.9 ng/g). After rainfall events, antibiotics accumulated in the soil at the positions where manure was applied, especially under high-intensity rainfall conditions. However, the antibiotic concentration in soil slightly increased from the top to the bottom of hills, thus indicating the restricted contribution of runoff to antibiotic transport, especially under low-intensity rainfall conditions. In addition, most antibiotics were sequestered in the surface soil (0–10 cm), and higher antibiotic concentrations were observed in deep soil (20–40 cm) in cropland than orchard. The soil aggregate, organic matter, and clay content played important roles in antibiotic sequestration along the hillslope subject to low-, medium-, and large-amount rainfall events, respectively. This study identified that land use, rainfall conditions, and soil structures jointly affect the spatial and temporal variability of antibiotics in soils on hillslopes.
