Papaya seed was used as biosorbent for removal of tannery dye (Direct Black 38) from aqueous solution. The papaya seed was characterized, and it posseses macro/mesoporous texture, large pore size, and a surface containing various organic functional groups. The initial dye concentration, contact time, and pH significantly influenced the adsorption capacity. Equilibrium data were analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The equilibrium data were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm, with a high adsorption capacity of 440 mg g⁻¹. Adsorption kinetic data were fitted using the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion, and Boyd models. The adsorption kinetics for the dye onto papaya seed was best described by second-order kinetic equation. The adsorption process mechanism was found to be controlled by both external mass transfer and pore diffusion, but the external diffusion was the dominating process. Papaya seeds showed to be a promising material for adsorption of Direct Black 38 dye from aqueous solution.

Batch sorption experiments were carried out to investigate the potentiality of papaya leaf powder (PLP) for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as adsorbent dose, initial solution concentration, contact time, and solution pH were also studied. The amount of dye adsorbed was found to increase with increase in initial dye concentrations. Papaya leaf adsorbs MB better in basic medium. The adsorption equilibrium data fitted well in the Langmuir isotherm equation with a monolayer sorption capacity of 512.55 mg g⁻¹. The kinetics of MB adsorption onto papaya leaf was examined using the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order and unified approach kinetic models. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model, but the rate constant was found to depend on initial dye concentration. The unified approach model described the equilibrium and kinetics well. The forward and backward rate constants were determined from the unified approach model.

The papaya is a commercially important fruit commodity worldwide. Being a climacteric fruit, it is highly perishable. Thus, for the transportation of papaya fruit for long distances without loss of quality, it is necessary to avoid the autocatalytic effect of ethylene in accelerating the ripening of the fruit. This work addresses the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis to the degradation of ethylene. A TiO₂ sol-gel supported on polypropylene (PP) and on glass was used as the catalytic material, and a UV-A lamp was employed as the radiation source. Initially, a concentration of 500 ppbv ethylene was exposed to the catalyst material irradiated by UV-A radiation. A sensitive photoacoustic spectrometer was used to monitor the photocatalytic activity. The TiO₂ sol-gel supported on the glass substrate was more efficient than on the PP in degrading the ethylene. Under direct UV-A exposure, the skin appearance of ‘Golden’ papaya was damaged, depreciating the fruit quality and thus preventing its commercialization. However, the feasibility of the heterogeneous photocatalysis to preserve the fruit quality was achieved when ethylene was removed from the storage ambient using fans, and then, this plant hormone was degraded by a reactor set apart in a ventilation closed system.
