The development of urbanised areas together with the growing transport infrastructure and traffic volume are the main cause of air quality deterioration due to the increasing concentrations of particulate matter. Dust pollution is a threat to human health. It can cause the development of lung, larynx or circulatory system cancer. Due to the ability to accumulate dust particles on the leaf surface, the contribution of trees in the process of phytoremediation of air pollution has started to be appreciated. An analysis of the elemental composition of particulate matter (PM) stored on the leaves surface was also carried out, which showed high average concentration of: C > O > Si > Fe (above 8wt.%). It was also observed single particles with a high concentration of heavy metals: Ti, Mn, Ba, Zn, Cr, Pb, Sn, Ni and REE (rare earth elements). The major origin of PM are vehicular emissions, soil and re-suspended road dust. This paper presents also a comparison of selected tree, shrub and vine species differing in their ability to accumulate particulate matter. It was experimentally determined the average leaf surface of individual plant species and established the amount of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter between 10 and 100 μm, 2.5 and 10 μm, and 0.2 and 2.5 μm deposited on the leaf surface and in waxes.Some species of vines (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), shrubs (Forsythia x intermediata) and coniferous trees, such as Betula pendula ‘Youngii’, Quercus rubra, Cratageus monogyna, Acer pseduoplatanus, Tilia cordata Mill. or Platanus orientalis turned out to be the most efficient in the process of phylloremediation.

(S,S)-ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) has a strong capacity to mobilize potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in phytoextraction. It can release NH₄⁺-N via biodegradation, which can enhance N supply to soil thereafter promote plant growth and plant resistance to PTEs. However, the advanced feature of released N in the EDDS-enhanced phytoextraction remains unclear. In the current study, the effects of N supply released from EDDS on ryegrass phytoextraction and plant resistance to PTEs were investigated in detail by a comparison with urea. Our results supported that the addition of both EDDS and urea increased N concentration in soil solution, yet EDDS needed more time to release available N for plant uptake and transported more N from root to shoot. Additionally, EDDS significantly increased the concentration of all targeted PTEs, i.e. Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb, in the soil solution, which results in higher levels of their occurrence in plant biomass compared with urea. By contrast, the supply of N slightly enhanced the ryegrass uptake of micro-nutrients, i.e. Cu and Zn, yet it caused negligible effects on nonessential elements, i.e. Cd and Pb. The mobilized PTEs by EDDS lead to elevated oxidative stress because higher levels of malondialdehyde and O₂•⁻ were observed. The supply of N attenuated oxidative stress caused by O₂•⁻ and H₂O₂, which was associated with enhanced activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase. Our results advanced the understanding of the exogenous N supply and metal resistance mechanisms in the EDDS-enhanced phytoextraction. This study also highlighted that EDDS can serve as a N source to ease N-deficient problems in PTEs-contaminated soils.

Inoculation of soil or seeds with plant growth promoting bacteria ameliorates metal toxicity to plants by changing metal speciation in plant tissues but the exact location of these changes remains unknown. Knowing where the changes occur is a critical first step to establish whether metal speciation changes are driven by microbial metabolism or by plant responses. Since bacteria concentrate in the rhizosphere, we hypothesised steep changes in metal speciation across the rhizosphere. We tested this by comparing speciation of zinc (Zn) in roots of Brassica juncea plants grown in soil contaminated with 600 mg kg⁻¹ of Zn with that of bulk and rhizospheric soil using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Seeds were either uninoculated or inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii and Zn was supplied in the form of sulfide (ZnS nanoparticles) and sulfate (ZnSO₄). Consistent with previous studies, Zn toxicity, as assessed by plant growth parameters, was alleviated in B. juncea inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum. XAS results showed that in both ZnS and ZnSO₄ treatments, the most significant changes in speciation occurred between the rhizosphere and the root, and involved an increase in the proportion of organic acids and thiol complexes. In ZnS treatments, Zn phytate and Zn citrate were the dominant organic acid complexes, whilst Zn histidine also appeared in roots exposed to ZnSO₄. Inoculation with bacteria was associated with the appearance of Zn cysteine and Zn formate in roots, suggesting that these two forms are driven by bacterial metabolism. In contrast, Zn complexation with phytate, citrate and histidine is attributed to plant responses, perhaps in the form of exudates, some with long range influence into the bulk soil, leading to shallower speciation gradients.

Six ecotypes of Typha domingensis Pers. Jahlar (E₁), Sheikhupura (E₂), Sahianwala (E₃), Gatwala (E₄), Treemu (E₅) and Knotti (E₆) from different ecological regions were collected to evaluate the leaf anatomical and biochemical attributes under different levels of salinity and nickel stress viz; L₀ (control), L₁ (100 mM + 50 mg kg⁻¹), L₂ (200 mM + 100 mg kg⁻¹) and L₃ (300 mM + 150 mg kg⁻¹). Presence of salt and Ni in rooting medium consistently affected growth, anatomical and physio-biochemical attributes in all Typha ecotypes. Discrete anatomical modifications among ecotypes such as reduced leaf thickness, increased parenchyma area, metaxylem cell area, aerenchyma formation and improved metaxylem vessels were recorded with increasing dose of salt and Ni. The minimum anatomical damages were recorded in E₁ and E₆ ecotypes. In all ecotypes, progressive perturbations in ionic homeostasis (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, N) due to salt and metal toxicity were evident along with reduction in photosynthetic pigments. Maximum enhancement in Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidase (POD) and modulated Malondialdehyde (MDA) activity was recorded in E₁ and E₆ as compared to other ecotypes. Accumulation of large amounts of metabolites such as total soluble sugars, total free amino acids content in Jahlar, Knotti, Treemu and Sahianawala ecotypes under different levels of salt and Ni prevented cellular damages in T. domingensis Pers. The correlation analysis exhibited a close relationship among different levels of salinity and Ni with various plant attributes. PCA-Biplot verified our correlational analysis among various attributes of Typha ecotypes. An obvious separation of Typha characters in response to different salinity and Ni levels was exhibited by PC1. We recommend that genetic potential of T. domingensis Pers. To grow under salt and Ni stresses must be investigated and used for phytoremediation and reclamation of contaminated soil.

To explore a novel strategy for the remediation of soils polluted with Cu and Cd, three strains of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) isolated from contaminated mines and two grass species (perennial ryegrass and tall fescue) were selected in this study. The performance of PGPR strains in metal adsorption, maintaining promotion traits under stress, and ameliorating phytostabilization potential was evaluated. Cd²⁺ exerted a stronger deleterious effect on microbial growth than Cu²⁺, but the opposite occurred for grass seedlings. Adsorption experiment showed that the growing PGPR strains were able to immobilize maximum 79.49% Cu and 81.35% Cd owing to biosorption or bioaccumulation. The strains exhibited the ability to secrete indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and dissolve phosphorus in the absence and presence of metals, and IAA production was even enhanced in the presence of low Cu²⁺ (5 mg L⁻¹). However, the siderophore-producing ability of the isolates was strongly suppressed under Cu and Cd exposure. Ryegrass was further selected for pot experiments owing to its higher germination rate and tolerance under Cu and Cd stress than fescue. Pot-experiment results revealed that PGPR addition significantly increased the shoot and root biomasses of ryegrass by 11.49%–44.50% and 43.53%–90.29% in soil co-contaminated with 800 mg Cu kg⁻¹ and 30 mg Cd kg⁻¹, respectively. Metal uptake and translocation in inoculated ryegrass significantly decreased owing to the reduced diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-extractable metal content and increased residual metal-fraction percentage mediated by PGPR. Interestingly, stress mitigation was observed in these inoculated plants; in particular, their malondialdehyde content and superoxide dismutase activity were even significantly lower than those of ryegrass under normal conditions. Therefore, PGPR could be a promising option to enhance the phytostabilization efficiency of Cu and Cd in heavily polluted soils.

Atrazine is an herbicide commonly used in several countries. Due to its long half-life, associated with its use in large scales, atrazine residues remain as environmental pollutants in water bodies. Phytoremediation is often pointed out as an interesting approach to remove atrazine from the aquatic environment, but its practical application is limited by the high toxicity of this herbicide. Here, we characterize the damages triggered by atrazine in Pistia stratiotes, evaluating the role of nitric oxide (NO), a cell-signaling molecule, in increasing the tolerance to the pollutant and the phytoremediation potential of this species. Pistia stratiotes plants were exposed to four treatments: Control; Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (0.05 mg L⁻¹); Atrazine (ATZ) (150 μg L⁻¹) and ATZ + SNP. The plants remained under those conditions for 24 h for biochemical and physiological analysis and 3 days for the evaluation of relative growth rate. The presence of atrazine in plant cells triggered a series of biochemical and physiological damages, such as the increase in the generation of reactive oxygen species, damages to cell membranes, photosynthesis impairment, and negative carbon balance. Despite this, the plants maintained greater growth rates than other aquatic macrophytes exposed to atrazine and showed high bioconcentration and translocation factors. The addition of SNP, a NO donor, decreased the herbicide toxicity, with an increase of over 60% in the IC₅₀ value (Inhibitor Concentration). Indeed, the NO signaling action was able to increase the tolerance of plants to atrazine, which resulted in increments in pollutant uptake and translocation, with the maintenance of overall cell (e.g. membranes) and organs (root system) structure, and the functioning of central physiological processes (e.g. photosynthesis). These factors allowed for more quickly and efficient removal of the pollutant from the environment, reducing costs, and increasing the viability of the phytoremediation process.

Accumulation of metals by plants is an important area of investigation in plant ecology and evolution as well as in soil contamination/phytoremediation practices. This paper reports that hormetic-biphasic dose-response relationships were commonly observed for multiple agents (i.e. arsenic, cadmium, chromium, fluoride, lead, and zinc) and 20 species in plant (hyper)accumulator studies. The hormetic stimulation was related to metal accumulation in affected tissues, with the metal stimulation concentration zone unique for each metal, species, tissue, and endpoint studied. However, quantitative features of the hormetic dose response were similar across all (hyper)accumulation studies, with results independent of plant species, endpoints measured, and metal. The dose-dependent stimulatory and inhibitory/toxic plant responses were often associated with the up- and down-regulation of adaptive mechanisms, especially those involving anti-oxidative enzymatic processes. These findings provide a mechanistic framework to account for both the qualitative and quantitative features of the hormetic dose response in plant (hyper)accumulator studies.

With the ever-increasing demand for lithium (Li) for portable energy storage devices, there is a global concern associated with environmental contamination of Li, via the production, use, and disposal of Li-containing products, including mobile phones and mood-stabilizing drugs. While geogenic Li is sparingly soluble, Li added to soil is one of the most mobile cations in soil, which can leach to groundwater and reach surface water through runoff. Lithium is readily taken up by plants and has relatively high plant accumulation coefficient, albeit the underlying mechanisms have not been well described. Therefore, soil contamination with Li could reach the food chain due to its mobility in surface- and ground-waters and uptake into plants. High environmental Li levels adversely affect the health of humans, animals, and plants. Lithium toxicity can be considerably managed through various remediation approaches such as immobilization using clay-like amendments and/or chelate-enhanced phytoremediation. This review integrates fundamental aspects of Li distribution and behaviour in terrestrial and aquatic environments in an effort to efficiently remediate Li-contaminated ecosystems. As research to date has not provided a clear picture of how the increased production and disposal of Li-based products adversely impact human and ecosystem health, there is an urgent need for further studies on this field.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ubiquitous organic pollutants in the environment, can accumulate in humans via the food chain and then harm human health. MiRNAs (microRNAs), a kind of non-coding small RNAs with a length of 18–30 nucleotides, regulate plant growth and development and respond to environmental stress. In this study, it is demonstrated that miR164 can regulate root growth and adventitious root generation of wheat under phenanthrene exposure by targeting NAC (NAM/ATAF/CUC) transcription factor. We observed that phenanthrene treatment accelerated the senescence and death of wheat roots, and stimulated the occurrence of new roots. However, it is difficult to compensate for the loss caused by old root senescence and death, due to the slower growth of new roots under phenanthrene exposure. Phenanthrene accumulation in wheat roots caused to generate a lot of reactive oxygen species, and enhanced lipoxygenase activity and malonaldehyde concentration, meaning that lipid peroxidation is the main reason for root damage. MiR164 was up-regulated by phenanthrene, enhancing the silence of NAC1, weakening the association with auxin signal, and inhibiting the occurrence of adventitious roots. Phenanthrene also affected the expression of CDK (the coding gene of cyclin-dependent kinase) and CDC2 (a gene regulating cell division cycle), the key genes in the cell cycle of pericycle cells, thereby affecting the occurrence and growth of lateral roots. In addition, NAM (a gene regulating no apical meristem) and NAC23 may also be related to the root growth and development in wheat exposed to phenanthrene. These results provide not only theoretical basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of crop response to PAHs accumulation, but also knowledge support for improving phytoremediation of soil or water contaminated by PAHs.

Most chemical plant wastewater contains both organic and inorganic pollutants, which are easy to diffuse along with surface runoff. The combined pollution of nonylphenol (NP) and cadmium (Cd) in soil is a serious problem that has not attracted enough attention. Based on the effects of selenium (Se) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) on plant and soil microbial communities, we speculated that the application of Se and P. aeruginosa in soil could improve the phytoremediation efficiency of ryegrass on contaminated soil. In this study, pot experiments with Cd and NP co-contaminated soil were conducted, and the results showed that application of P. aeruinosa alone could improve the removal rates of NP and Cd by ryegrass, and the supplementary of Se further enhanced the effect of micro-phyto remediation, with the highest removal rates of NP and Cd were 79.6% and 49.4%, respectively. The application of P. aeruginosa plus Se reduced the adsorption of Cd and NP through C–O and Si–O–Fe of the soil, changed the enzyme activity, and also affected the changing trend of the microbial community in soil. Pseudomonas, Sphingomonadales, Nitrospira, and other beneficial bacteria were enriched after a 60-day period with P. aeruginosa and Se treatment, thus promoting the removal of NP and Cd. In light of the above results, we suggest that P. aeruginosa application can efficiently facilitate the phytoremediation of ryegrass on Cd-NP co-contaminated soil, and Se supplementation in soil showed the synergistic effect on the remediation.
