A new traiazole derivative (4-amino-5-(((5-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)thio)methyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol, (L), was employed as a chelating ligand to form a dibutyltin chloride complex and improve the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) properties. The doped PVC films were characterized via FT-IR, UV-Vis spectrum, elemental analyses (C, H, N, and M (metallic)), and magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements. These characterizations were conducted at room temperature, and it was disclosed that the chelating ligand rules as a bidentate chelate. The photostabilization examination of plain and L-doped PVC films was conducted in the presence of ambient air using the accelerating weather tester, where the doping ratio was fixed to 0.5 wt.%. The photostabilization performance of the additive was evaluated by tracking the indexes of carbonyl (ICO), polyene (IPO), and hydroxyl (IOH), and weight loss relationship with irradiation time. It was noticed that the values of ICO, Ipo, and IOH enhanced with the irradiation time, where this improvement relied on the presence of the Bu2SnL complex.

Enhanced release of phosphorus (P) from soils with snowmelt flooding poses a threat of eutrophication to waterbodies in cold climatic regions. Reductions in P losses with various soil amendments has been reported, however effectiveness of MgSO₄ has not been studied under snowmelt flooding. This study examined (a) the P release enhancement with flooding in relation to initial soil P status and (b) the effectiveness of MgSO₄ at two rates in reducing P release to floodwater under simulated snowmelt flooding. Intact soil monoliths were collected from eight agricultural fields from Southern Manitoba, Canada. Unamended and MgSO₄ surface-amended monoliths (2.5 and 5.0 Mg ha⁻¹) in triplicates were pre-incubated for 7 days, then flooded and incubated (4 °C) for 56 days. Pore water and floodwater samples collected at 7-day intervals were analyzed for dissolved reactive P (DRP), pH, Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn. Redox potential (Eh) was measured on each day of sampling. Representative soil samples collected from each field were analyzed for Olsen and Mehlich 3-P. Simulated snowmelt flooding enhanced the mobility of soil P with approximately 1.2–1.6 -fold increase in pore water DRP concentration from 0 to 21 days after flooding. Mehlich-3 P content showed a strong relationship with the pore water DRP concentrations suggesting its potential as a predictor of P loss risk during prolonged flooding. Surface application of MgSO₄ reduced the P release to pore water and floodwater. The 2.5 Mg ha⁻¹ rate was more effective than the higher rate with a 21–75% reduction in average pore water DRP, across soils. Soil monoliths amended with MgSO₄ maintained a higher Eh, and had greater pore water Ca and Mg concentrations, which may have reduced redox-induced P release and favored re-precipitation of P with Ca and Mg, thus decreasing DRP concentrations in pore water and floodwater.

Microbial biofilms can rapidly colonize plastic debris in aquatic environments and subsequently, accumulate chemical pollutants from the surrounding water. Here, we studied the microbial colonization of different plastics, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene (PE) exposed in three freshwater systems (the Qinhuai River, the Niushoushan River, and Donghu Lake) for 44 days. We also assessed the biofilm mass and associated metals attached to plastics. The plastics debris characteristics, such as contact angle and surface roughness, greatly affected the increased biofilm biomass. All types of metal accumulation onto the plastic substrate abundances significantly higher than the concentrations of heavy metal in the water column, such as Ba (267.75 μg/g vs. 42.12 μg/L, Donhu Lake), Zn (254 μg/g vs. 0.023 μg/L the Qinhuai River), and Cr (93.75 μg/g vs. 0.039 μg/L, the Niushoushan River). Compared with other metals, the heavy metal Ba, Cr and Zn accumulated easily on the plastic debris (PET, PP, PVC, and PE) at all incubation sites. Aquatic environmental factors (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and suspended solids concentrations) largely shaped metal accumulation onto plastic debris compared with plastic debris properties.

Plastic pollution is a global issue posing a threat to marine biota with ecological implications on ecosystem functioning. Micro and nanoplastic impact on phytoplankton autotrophic species (e.g., cell growth inhibition, decrease in chlorophyll a and photosynthetic efficiency and hetero-aggregates formation) have been largely documented. However, the heterogeneity of data makes rather difficult a comparison based on size (i.e. micro vs nano). In addition, knowledge gaps on the ecological impact on phytoplankton assemblage structure and functioning are evident. A new virtual meta-analysis on cause-effect relationships of micro and nanoplastics on phytoplankton species revealed the significant effect posed by polymer type on reducing cell density for tested PVC, PS and PE plastics. Linked with autotrophic phytoplankton role in atmospheric CO₂ fixation, a potential impact of plastics on marine carbon pump is discussed. The understanding of the effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the phytoplankton functioning is fundamental to raise awareness on the overall impact on the first level of marine food web. Interactions between micro and nanoplastics and phytoplankton assemblages have been quite documented by in vitro examinations; but, further studies considering natural plankton assemblages and/or large mesocosm experiments should be performed to evaluate and try predicting ecological impacts on primary producers.

Plastic waste is continuously introduced not only into marine, but also freshwater environments, where it fragments into microplastics. Organisms may be affected by the particles themselves due to ingestion and indirectly via incorporated additives such as plasticizers, since these substances have the ability to leach out of the polymer matrix. Although it has been indicated that the likelihood of additives leaching out into the gut lumen of organisms exposed to microplastics is low, studies distinguishing between the effects of the synthetic polymer itself and incorporated additives of the same polymer are scarce. Since this is obligatory for risk assessment, we analyzed the chronic effects of flexible polyvinylchloride (PVC), a widely used polymer, containing the plasticizer diisononylphthalate (DiNP) on morphology and life history of the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna and compared these effects with the effects of rigid PVC, lacking DiNP, as well as a glass bead control. After up to 31 days of exposure, rigid PVC and glass beads did not affect body length and relative tail spine length of D. magna, whereas flexible PVC led to an increased body length and a reduced number of offspring. None of the treatments increased the mortality significantly. We were able to show that 2.67μg/L DiNP leached out of the flexible PVC into the surrounding medium using GC-MS. Yet, we were not able to measure leachate inside the gut lumen of D. magna. The effects emerged towards the end of the experiment, due to the time dependent process of leaching. Therefore, the results highlight the relevance of long-term chronic exposure experiments, especially as leaching of additives takes time. Further, our study shows the importance to distinguish between microplastics containing leachable additives and the raw polymer in ecotoxicological testing.

In response to the growing worldwide plastic pollution problem, the field of nanoplastics research is attempting to determine the risk of exposure to nanoparticles amidst their ever-increasing presence in the environment. Since little is known about the attributes of environmental nanoplastics (concentration, composition, morphology, and size) due to fundamental limitations in detection and quantification of smaller plastic particles, researchers often improvise by engineering nanoplastic particles with various surface modifications as models for laboratory toxicological testing. Polystyrene and other commercially available or easily synthesized polymer materials functionalized with surfactants or fluorophores are typically used for these studies. How surfactants, additives, fluorophores, the addition of surface functional groups for conjugation, or other changes to surface attributes alter toxicological profiles remains unclear. Additionally, the limited polymers used in laboratory models do not mimic the vast range of polymer types comprising environmental pollutants. Nanomaterials are tricky materials to investigate due to their high surface area, high surface energies, and their propensity to interact with molecules, proteins, and biological probes. These unique properties can often invalidate common laboratory assays. Extreme care must be taken to ensure that results are not artefactual. We have gathered zeta potential values for various polystyrene nanoparticles with different functionalization, in different solvents, from the reported literature. We also discuss the effects of surface engineering and solvent properties on interparticle interactions, agglomeration, particle-protein interactions, corona formation, nano-bio interfaces, and contemplate how these parameters might confound results. Various toxicological exemplars are critically reviewed, and the relevance and shortfalls of the most popular models used in nanoplastics toxicity studies published in the current literature are considered.

The first investigation of microplastics in G. affinis from the Brantas River was carried out in this study. Microplastics were found at higher concentrations in gambusia fish captured downstream (209.18 ± 48.85 particles/gram) than upstream (24.44 ± 0.14 particles/gram). Microplastic particle concentrations in G. affinis have a positive linear relationship with fish length. The fiber was the most prominent shape at Sites 1 and 2, whereas the fragment was dominant at Sites 3 and 4. With a value of 45–48%, black dominates the entire site, followed by blue (29–38%), transparent colors (7–11%), red (2–4%), purple (1–3%), and other colors (5–7%). Microplastics measuring <0.1 mm are commonly found in fish bodies. Cyclohexylmethyl octyl ester (phthalic acid) is the most abundant component found in microplastics, accounting for 30.11% of the total. This study provides evidence that G. affinis can be used to monitor the presence of microplastic pollution in the Brantas River but further studies are needed regarding the effects of microplastics and their health hazards on fish.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are an important group of additives in plastics that increase resistance to ignition and slow down the rate of burning. Because of concerns about their environmental and human health impacts, however, some of the most widely employed BFRs, including hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and commercial mixtures of penta-, octa- and deca- (poly)bromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs), have been restricted or phased out. In this review, the oceanic sources and pathways of PBDEs, the most widely used BFRs, are evaluated and quantified, with particular focus on emissions due to migration from plastics into the atmosphere versus emissions associated with the input of retarded or contaminated plastics themselves. Calculations based on available measurements of PBDEs in the environment suggest that 3.5 and 135 tonnes of PBDEs are annually deposited in the ocean when scavenged by aerosols and through air-water gas exchange, respectively, with rivers contributing a further ∼40 tonnes. Calculations based on PBDE migration from plastic products in use or awaiting or undergoing disposal yield similar net inputs to the ocean but indicate a relatively rapid decline over the next two decades in association with the reduction in the production and recycling of these chemicals. Estimates associated with the input of PBDEs to the ocean when “bound” to marine plastics and microplastics range from about 360 to 950 tonnes per year based on the annual production of plastics and PBDEs over the past decade, and from about 20 to 50 tonnes per annum based on the abundance and distribution of PBDEs in marine plastic litter. Because of the persistence and pervasiveness of plastics in the ocean and diffusion coefficients for PBDEs on the order of 10⁻²⁰ to 10⁻²⁷ m² s⁻¹, microplastics are likely to act as a long-term source of these chemicals though gradual migration. Locally, however, and more important from an ecotoxicological perspective, PBDE migration may be significantly enhanced when physically and chemically weathered microplastics are exposed to the oily digestive fluids conditions of fish and seabirds.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution frequently co-occur with Microcystis-dominated blooms in freshwaters, but MPs effects on toxigenic Microcystis growth and effect mechanisms remained poorly understood. This study used 0.5 μm-size polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to explore dose- and time-dependent effects of single and combined MPs (i.e., PE + PVC) on toxigenic Microcystis growth and cellular responses during 16 day-test. Results showed that Microcystis growth and cellular responses depended on exposure time, MPs dose and type. MPs elicited hormesis effect in early stage at low dose (5 mg/L), while increasingly inhibited growth with rising PVC or PE + PVC dose but declining PE dose (5, 10, 50 mg/L) in mid-late stage, with stress intensity of PE + PVC > PVC > PE. Further analyses revealed unobvious cell damage under MPs stress, largely because antioxidases were increasingly activated as MPs stress enhanced. Unicellular MCs release ability during mid stage almost coincided with total/bound amount and each fraction of ex-poly and ex-pro trends under MPs stress. Significant positive relationship existed between MCs release ability and ex-poly/ex-pro fractions and total amount of Microcystis cells along mid-late stage under MPs stress, validating that ex-poly/ex-pro production was regulated as a result of MCs release. Besides, unicellular MCs production ability was generally positively correlated with soluble, tightly-bound and total ex-poly and ex-pro at late stage. These suggested that cellular antioxidants, MCs production/release ability and ex-poly/ex-pro production of Microcystis could be coupled to exert integrated defense against MPs stress to protect surviving cells in Microcystis population. These findings are crucial for acquiring the fate of Microcystis-dominated blooms co-occurring with MPs pollution, and reasonably assessing and managing involved eco-risks.

Terrestrial environments are subject to extensive pollution by plastics and, based on the slow degradation of plastics, are likely to act as long term sinks for microplastic debris. Currently the hazards of microplastics in soil and the potential impacts on soil organisms is poorly understood. Particularly the role of particle characteristics, such a size or polymer type, in dose-response relationships for microplastics is not known. The aim of this study was to assess the ingestion and toxicity of nylon (polyamide) particles, in three different size ranges, to Enchytraeus crypticus in a soil exposure. Effects were also compared with those of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles, in a single size range. Nylon particle ingestion was confirmed using fluorescence microscopy, with greatest ingestion for particles in the smallest size range (13–18 μm). To investigate how particle size affected survival and reproduction, E. crypticus were exposed to nylon particles in two well-defined size ranges (13–18 and 90–150 μm) and concentrations of 20, 50, 90 and 120 g/kg (2–12% w/w). An intermediate nylon size range (63–90 μm) and a larger sized PVC particle (106–150 μm), both at 90 g/kg, were also tested. Survival was not affected by either of the polymer types or sizes. Reproduction was significantly reduced, in a dose-dependent manner, by the nylon particles at high exposure concentrations (>90 g/kg). Smaller size ranges (13–18 μm) had a greater effect compared to larger size ranges (>63 μm), with a calculated EC₅₀ for the 13–18 μm size range of 108 ± 8.5 g/kg. This greater hazard could be qualitatively linked with the ingestion of a greater number of smaller particles. This study highlights the potential for toxic effects of plastics in small size ranges to soil organisms at high exposure concentrations, providing understanding of the hazards microplastics may pose in the terrestrial environment.
