Sediment quality in the iron gate reservoir [Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro]. [Preliminary communication from scientific-research project]
2003
Damjanovic, M. | Babic-Mladenovic, M. (Institut za vodoprivredu Jaroslav Cerni, Beograd (Serbia and Montenegro))
Regular monitoring of water quality of the Danube river in the backwater zone includes analysis of the sediment. It is well known that sediment is a sink place for the non degradable compounds and it reveales the long term water quality status in the reservoir. This paper presents the general results on the Iron Gate reservoir siltation. as well as some data regarding pollution level, based on investigations carried in the period of 2001-2002. The investigations included organic load of the sediment, heavy metals and organic pollutants content. The degree of pollution is evaluated on the basis of various criteria, also compared to results of previous case studies.

Importance of sediments quantity and quality problems addressing to land reclamation canal network in Vojvodina (Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro) are pointed out in this paper. Necessity for sediments monitoring and criteria definition for environmental discharge are drown. Special attention is paid to agricultural land as recipient of these sediments.

The bacteriological and physicochemical characteristics of water and sediment collected in four fisheries situated in the north of Cameroon were evaluated. In these locations, all the analysed parameters (temperature, pH, salinity, conductivity, turbidity, suspended matter, organic matter, phosphates, sulphates, nitrates, chloride, calcium, magnesium, iron and nitrogen) were the highest, except for chlorides. Total mesophile aerobic flora varied between 1.4±0.50×105 in Tibati and 5.57±0.50×106 CFU/mL in Lagdo. Salmonella concentration was comprised between 66.66±1.62 in Tibati and 274±3.16 CFU/mL in Yagoua. There was about 10±0.50 CFU/mL Vibrio in Lagdo and 342.27±5.53 CFU/mL in Maga. Staphylococcus concentration was between 1.4±0.55×103 CFU/mL in Tibati and 4.44±0.9×104 in Maga. Clostridia were comprised between 0.33±0.00 in Tibati and 226.66±4.29 CFU/mL in Maga while Pseudomonas concentration was comprise between 16.26±0.70 in Tibati and 326.66±6.00 CFU/mL in Lagdo. Faecal Streptococcus varied between 0.33±0.00 in Tibati and 238.66±8.15 CFU/mL in Yagoua. The total mesophile aerobic flora was significantly high (P<0,005) in Lagdo while Clostridium, faecal streptococcus, and Streptococcus concentration were significantly high in Maga, Yagoua and Lagdo. Lake's sediments in Maga were the most infected. The different analysis revealed that the fisheries were relatively polluted. Some of the bacteria counted like Pseudomonas and Vibrio might be pathogenic for fishes. (Résumé d'auteur)

One of the key issues related to the water quality in the Iron Gate reservoir is the pollution of the sediment. Sediment deposits retained in the Iron Gate reservoir originate from a wide river basin with more then 80 million inhabitants and highly developed municipal and industrial infrastructure. Besides mineral river sediment, various organic and inorganic matters entered and deposited within the Iron Gate reservoir. Sediment research objective was to assess the content of contaminants and nutrients which potentially could enter the water column.

During spring of 2005, referent monitoring of the chemical quality of surface waters and sediments in some protected areas in Vojvodina (Serbia) was conducted as a supplement to the Regular monitoring program. The aim of the study was to establish the chemical quality of surface waters and sediments regarding nutrient content. It is shown that the water quality satisfies the criteria of the 1st/2nd class according to our legislation, with the exception of the Ludos location, which showed a contamination with nitrogen matter in water and sediments. With regard to the contamination of water with phosphorus, almost all locations may be considered as potentially problematic.

The objective of this paper is establishing eco-chemical characterization of the Skadar lake (i.e. Lake Scutari) system by investigation of heavy metal content and distribution in the lake sediments. Factors that influence heavy metal concentrations in sediments are allochthonous (natural and human effects) and autochthonous (natural processes of settling and sorption) as well as transformation of settled substances in sediments. Sediments samples were taken from 15 sites and analysed for copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb).

During 2005 the referent monitoring of the chemical quality of surface waters and sediments in Vojvodina was conducted as a supplement to the regular monitoring program in Vojvodina. It is concluded that the water quality mainly satisfies the criteria of the 1st/2nd class acccording to our legislation, but regarding the more stringent Canadian and Dutch water quality standards content of some micropollutants may be considered as potentially problematic. Sediment quality is mainly satisfying, with the exceptions of the DTD canal Vrbas-Bezdan monitoring station after Srbobran, which showed a slight contamination with PAHs, and the Sava-Sabac monitoring station, as the target values according to Dutch legislation were exceeded for DDT and its metabolites.

During the spring of 2005, the chemical quality of surface waters and sediments in selected protected areas of Vojvodina (Serbia) was monitored, as a part of the Referent monitoring of the chemical quality of surface waters in Vojvodina during 2005 project. This work presents the results of the referent monitoring and establishes the chemical quality of the surface waters and sediments, and identifies particularly polluted and threatened areas. It is shown that in terms of organic micropollutants content, the chemical quality of the water in the protected areas is in most cases satisfactory, except in the protected areas of Carska Bara, at the Stari Begej Wharf site, and Lake Ludos, where higher mineral oils concentrations were detected. Furthermore, the toluene concentration in Lake Ludos exceeded Canadian guidelines.

The paper deals with quality of water and deposits in the Nadela stream (in Banat, Serbia). This stream is outline of regional multipurpose hydrosystem within the same name. Analyses are carried out according to water usability for irrigation and properties of settled sediments from stream bottom. Their potential influence, and effect of their application to surrounding arable soil were investigated.

Oil spill phenomena occur very often in the Boka Aquatorium. By studying the occurrence of oil stain on the sea surface the analyses of the Boka Bay pollution is represented in this document. Also represented is an evaluation or stimulation of expert opinion in a case of oil spill occurrence, in relation to the air temperature with the obvious consequences of carbon hydrogen appearance/presence.
