Recent studies have indicated that Galleria mellonella larvae ingest polyethylene films and the degradation mechanism could inspire biotechnological exploitation for degrading plastic to eliminate global pollution from plastic waste. In this study, we tested the chemical compositions of masticated and ingested different plastic types by G. mellonella. High throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene was used to characterize the alteration of the microbial communities derived from salivary glands, gut contents and whole G. mellonella larvae. Our results indicated that G. mellonella is able to masticate polyethylene (PE), expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polypropylene (PP) and convert it to small particles with very large and chemically modified surfaces. The characteristics of the polymer affect the rate of damage. Formation of functional carbonyl groups on the appearance of oxidized metabolic intermediates of polyolefins in the frass samples observed. We found that the mastication of EPS, PP or PE could significantly alter the microbial composition in the gut content while it did not appear to influence the salivary glands microbial community. Representatives of Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Enterobacter grew with the PE diet while mastication of polystyrene and polypropylene increased the abundance of Enterococcus. The evaluation of bacterial communities in whole larvae confirmed the obtained result and additionally showed that the abundance of Paenibacillus, Corynebacterium and Commamonadaceae increased by Styrofoam (EPS) consumption.

The hydrocarbon phenanthrene is an organic compound commonly found in the environment. In aquatic ecosystems, it is highly toxic to organisms, although little is known about its effects on sediment-dwelling organisms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate phenanthrene effects on biochemical, histological, and ontogenetic levels in larvae of the sediment-dwelling invertebrate Chironomus sancticaroli at acute and chronic exposure. Lethal concentrations were estimated and toxicity (acute-96 h and chronic- 8 d) tests were performed at phenanthrene concentrations from 0.12 to 1.2 mg L⁻¹. At acute and chronic exposure, we evaluated acetylcholinesterase (AChE), alpha esterase (EST-α), and beta esterase (EST-β) activities as well as histological alterations. In the assays with chronic exposure, effects on larval development were estimated using antennae length (instar estimative) and body length (growth estimative). The EST-α showed a significantly increased activity after 48 h at acute exposure to high concentrations of phenanthrene, while EST-β activity was increased after 48 and 72 h at acute exposure at higher concentrations and at 0.12 mg L⁻¹ at chronic exposure. At acute exposure, the midgut showed alterations such as brush border disruption, gastric caeca regression, and lumen area reduction; the fat body showed nuclear alteration in the trophocytes, while the Malpighian tubules showed brush border reduction and the salivary glands were subject to cytoplasm vacuolation. At chronic exposure, the same alterations were observed, in addition to vacuolar coalescence in the trophocytes of the fat body. Regarding larval development, a reduction of body length was observed with increasing phenanthrene concentrations. Similarly, molting was delayed; in the control group, all larvae were in the fourth instar, while at higher phenanthrene concentrations, larvae were predominantly in the third instar. Phenanthrene had toxic effects on this chironomid, indicating risks for natural populations.

Atrazine (ATZ) is herbicide that has been widely used for different crops. This extensive use has resulted in severe deleterious effects in different species. In this work, we investigated the potentially harmful effect of atrazine herbicide on the brain and submandibular salivary gland. Our investigation was carried out on 20 adult male albino rats that were equally divided into two groups. The first group received distilled water as control, while the second group received ATZ at 200 mg/kg body weight/ day via stomach gavage for 30 successive days of the experiment; the oral LD50 for ATZ is 3090 mg/kg. Our findings revealed the ability of ATZ to cause damage to the cerebrum, hippocampus, and submandibular salivary gland. This damage resulted from the induced oxidative stress, which was indicated by a significant elevation in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, DNA fragmentation, tumor necrotic factor-alpha (TNF-α) expression, with a significant decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) level and reduction of B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2), dopamine receptor D1 (Drd1), cAMP-responsive element-binding protein 1 (Creb1) genes expression after ATZ exposure. Moreover, degeneration of cells, cytoplasmic vacuolation, congestion of blood vessels, a strong immune reaction to caspase 3, and negligible immune expression of a glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were also noticed in the ATZ-treated group. We concluded that ATZ induces oxidative stress and has a toxic and apoptotic effects on the cerebrum, hippocampus, and salivary gland of adult male albino rats.

This study focuses on the Dombrovska pit lake, near the city of Kalush in Ukraine, which is a former potassium salt mine filled with brine and freshwater. The water level is still increasing and as a result the salinity is decreasing. We analyzed the benthic fauna communities and the genome instability by assessing the rearrangements in the polytene chromosomes of Chironomus salinarius and the physicochemical parameters of the near-bottom water (pH, conductivity, mineralization, major ions, NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, metals Cd, Pb, Cu, Mn, and Fe) and sediment (pH, organic matter and metals Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) at four sites. The water mineralization ranged from 17.3 to 26.2 g dm⁻³ which are classified as mesohaline and polyhaline waters, respectively. The biodiversity of the benthic fauna was low, and the dominant species was C. salinarius. The density of C. salinarius varied spatially and changed from 637 ind./m² at a depth of 5 m to 8167 ind./m² at a depth of 2.5 m. The genome instability was analyzed by examining the structural and functional changes in the salivary gland chromosomes of C. salinarius. The exposure of C. salinarius damaged the chromosomes and the activities of key structures, such as the Balbiani ring and nucleolar organizer, were partially or completely suppressed.

Outdoor air pollution may be associated with cancer risk at different sites. This study sought to investigate outdoor air pollution from waste gas emission effects on multiple cancer incidences in a retrospective population-based study in Shanghai, China. Trends in cancer incidence for males and females and trends in waste gas emissions for the total waste gas, industrial waste gas, other waste gas, SO₂, and soot were investigated between 1983 and 2010 in Shanghai, China. Regression models after adjusting for confounding variables were constructed to estimate associations between waste gas emissions and multiple cancer incidences in the whole group and stratified by sex, Engel coefficient, life expectancy, and number of doctors per 10,000 populations to further explore whether changes of waste gas emissions were associated with multiple cancer incidences. More than 550,000 new cancer patients were enrolled and reviewed. Upward trends in multiple cancer incidences for males and females and in waste gas emissions were observed from 1983 to 2010 in Shanghai, China. Waste gas emissions came mainly from industrial waste gas. Waste gas emissions was significantly positively associated with cancer incidence of salivary gland, small intestine, colorectal, anus, gallbladder, thoracic organs, connective and soft tissue, prostate, kidney, bladder, thyroid, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lymphatic leukemia, myeloid leukemia, and other unspecified sites (all p < 0.05). Negative association between waste gas emissions and the esophagus cancer incidence was observed (p < 0.05). The results of the whole group were basically consistent with the results of the stratified analysis. The results from this retrospective population-based study suggest ambient air pollution from waste gas emissions was associated with multiple cancer incidences.

Tartrazine is one of the most widely used food additives. The present investigation was carried out on 40 adult male albino rats. They were divided into four groups of ten animals for each. Group I was considered as a control group. Group II was treated with tartrazine daily in a dose 7.5 mg/kg body weight by oral gavage for 30 days. Group III was received 15 mg/kg body weight of tartrazine for the same period. Group IV was administered tartrazine in a dose 100 mg/kg body weight for the whole duration of the experiment. At the end of experiment, samples from the cerebellum, submandibular salivary glands, and kidneys were fixed in neutral buffered formalin 10% and prepared routinely for paraffin sectioning and staining for histopathological and immunohistochemical investigations of proliferating cell nuclear antigen “PCNA” and glial fibrillar acidic protein “GFAP”. Tartrazine-treated groups revealed histopathological degenerative changes in the obtained organs. In group II, the cerebellum showed subcortical edema, congestion of the blood vessels, cytoplasmic vacuolations, and pyknosis of the nuclei in the gray matter neurons. Concerning the submandibular glands, they expressed cytoplasmic vacuolations and pyknosis of the nuclei of the acinar cells, congestion of the interacinar blood capillaries, and degenerative changes in the striated duct. The kidneys appeared with interstitial hemorrhage and dilatation of the glomerular capillaries. The PCT and DCT showed ill-defined cell boundaries. The collecting tubules in the renal medulla appeared with flattened epithelial cells. The severity of these changes increases by increasing the dose of tartrazine in group III and reach to the highest level in group IV. The immunoexpression of the GFAP in the cerebellum of the experimental groups was intense compared to the control group. The immunoreactivity of PCNA in the nuclei of the acinar and ductal cells of the submandibular gland and the cells of the renal cortex and medulla was strong in the tartrazine-treated groups compared to the control group. The current study concluded that the tartrazine had serious effect on the cerebellum, submandibular glands, and kidneys that adversely affect the functions of these organs.
