Using a process-based Dynamic Land Ecosystem Model, we assessed carbon dynamics of urbanized/developed lands in the Southern United States during 1945–2007. The results indicated that approximately 1.72 (1.69–1.77) Pg (1P = 10¹⁵) carbon was stored in urban/developed lands, comparable to the storage of shrubland or cropland in the region. Urbanization resulted in a release of 0.21 Pg carbon to the atmosphere during 1945–2007. Pre-urbanization vegetation type and time since land conversion were two primary factors determining the extent of urbanization impacts on carbon dynamics. After a rapid decline of carbon storage during land conversion, an urban ecosystem gradually accumulates carbon and may compensate for the initial carbon loss in 70–100 years. The carbon sequestration rate of urban ecosystem diminishes with time, nearly disappearing in two centuries after land conversion. This study implied that it is important to take urbanization effect into account for assessing regional carbon balance.

In this study, various remote sensing data, modeling data and emission inventories were integrated to analyze the tempo-spatial distribution of biomass burning in mainland Southeast Asia and its effects on the local ambient air quality from 2001 to 2016. Land cover changes have been considered in dividing the biomass burning into four types: forest fires, shrubland fires, crop residue burning and other fires. The results show that the monthly average number of fire spots peaked at 34,512 in March and that the monthly variation followed a seasonal pattern, which was closely related to precipitation and farming activities. The four types of biomass burning fires presented different tempo-spatial distributions. Moreover, the monthly Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), concentration of particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and carbon monoxide (CO) total column also peaked in March with values of 0.62, 45 μg/m³ and 3.25 × 10¹⁸ molecules/cm², respectively. There are significant correlations between the monthly means of AOD (r = 0.74, P < 0.001), PM₂.₅ concentration (r = 0.88, P < 0.001), and CO total column (r = 0.82, P < 0.001) and the number of fire spots in the fire season. We used Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model to resolve the sources of PM₂.₅ into 3 factors. The result indicated that the largest contribution (48%) to annual average concentration of PM₂.₅ was from Factor 1 (dominated by biomass burning), followed by 27% from Factor 3 (dominated by anthropogenic emission), and 25% from Factor 2 (long-range transport/local nature source). The annually anthropogenic emission of CO and PM₂.₅ from 2001 to 2012 and the monthly emission from the Emission Database for Global Atmosphere Research (EDGAR) were consistent with PMF analysis and further prove that biomass burning is the dominant cause of the variation in the local air quality in mainland Southeast Asia.

Current understanding of how environmental aging of microplastics contributes to their ecotoxicity is low. We investigated whether incubation of microplastics in waters with different organic load and toxic potential alters the toxicity of microplastics to crustacean Daphnia magna, fish embryos Danio rerio and plant Lemna minor. Polyethylene primary microplastics; specifically microbeads from facial scrub; were subjected to 3-weeks incubation in low affected spring water, river water, effluent from the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and municipal landfill leachate. Primary microplastics had no acute effect on D. magna mobility and D. rerio embryos development. While high organic load wastewaters; WWTP effluent and landfill leachate; showed evident toxicity for D. magna and D. rerio embryos, microplastics aged in these wastewaters had no effect. This suggests that adsorption of pollutants from wastewaters to microplastic particles was not high enough to induce acute toxicity to D. magna and D. rerio. On the contrary, primary microplastics affected the root growth of L. minor. Interestingly, aging of microplastics in low organic-load waters mitigated the toxicity of microplastics for L. minor, while microplastics aged in high-organic load waters had the same adverse effect as primary microplastics. Partly, these effects can be explained by different extent of coating on microplastics in different water samples. This study suggests that aging of microplastics in wastewaters and natural waters did not significantly enhance the toxicity to selected test species, but further studies on plants may be of interest.

The change in land-use from woodland to crop production leads to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. An understanding of the main N2O sources in soils under a particular land can be a useful tool in developing mitigation strategies. To better understand the effect of land-use on N2O emissions, soils were collected from 5 different land-uses in southeast China: shrub land (SB), eucalyptus plantation (ET), sweet potato farmland (SP), citrus orchard (CO) and vegetable growing farmland (VE). A stable isotope experiment was conducted incubating soils from the different land use types at 60% water holding capacity (WHC), using 15NH4NO3 and NH415NO3 to determine the dominant N2O production pathway for the different land-uses. The average N2O emission rates for VE, CO and SP were 5.30, 4.23 and 3.36 μg N kg−1 dry soil d−1, greater than for SB and ET at 0.98 and 1.10 μg N kg−1 dry soil d−1, respectively. N2O production was dominated by heterotrophic nitrification for SB and ET, accounting for 51 and 50% of N2O emissions, respectively. However, heterotrophic nitrification was negligible (<8%) in SP, CO and VE, where autotrophic nitrification was a primary driver of N2O production, accounting for 44, 45 and 66% for SP, CO and VE, respectively. Denitrification was also an important pathway of N2O production across all land-uses, accounting for 35, 35, 49, 52 and 32% for SB, ET, SP, CO and VE respectively. Average N2O emission rates via autotrophic nitrification, denitrification and heterotrophic nitrification increased significantly with gross nitrification rates, NO3− contents and C:N ratios respectively, indicating that these were important factors in the N2O production pathways for these soils. These results contribute to our understanding and ability to predict N2O emissions from different land-uses in subtropical acidic soils and in developing potential mitigation strategies.

Monoterpene emissions of Quercus coccifera L. were repeatedly measured during the two years following the spreading of a sewage sludge compost at rates of 50Mgha⁻¹ and 100Mgha⁻¹, in a twelve-year-old post-fire Mediterranean shrubland. We also monitored the patterns of change in soil and leaf nutrient content, plant water potential, chlorophyll fluorescence, and plant growth. Compost spreading resulted in weak changes in leaf nutrient content and plant water status, and therefore no significant effect on monoterpene emissions at leaf scale, except during one summer sampling, probably related to advanced leaf maturity with the highest compost rate. However, compost increased plant growth, particularly the leaf biomass. The results suggest that compost spreading in Mediterranean shrublands has no strong short-term effect on Q. coccifera monoterpene emissions at leaf level, but may indirectly increase volatile organic compound fluxes at the stand scale, which may contribute to regional ozone pollution.

This work analyses the cross-shore (80 m) and long-shore (200 m) spatial and size distribution of macro-litter on coastal dunes, employing a mapping framework based on an Unmanned Aerial System (UAS, aka drone) and a GIS mobile application.Over the cross-shore, plastic percentage increased from 60% to 90% landwards. The largest items (processed wood) were found on the embryo dune. Plastic bottles and paper napkins were trapped by the foredune grass, while the largest fishing-related items were intercepted by the low scrub plant community on the backdune. Over the long-shore, plastic percentage and items size increased from the urbanized area towards the natural dunes. This work assessed the abundance of marine litter on coastal dune sectors, underlining the role of distinct vegetation types in trapping items of different size. The mapping framework can promote further marine litter monitoring programs and support specific strategies for protecting the dune ecosystems.

Birch, G.F. | Lee, J. H. | Gunns, T.
Port Hacking is a tide-dominated, drowned river valley at the southern edge of the Sydney conurbation (Australia) and is bordered by intense urbanization to the north and native bushland in the south. The current work provides a first-time, baseline evaluation of the magnitude of human-induced change and risk posed by sedimentary metals in Port Hacking and catchment. The estuary separates fluvial and estuarine sediment enriched in metals exhibiting moderate ecological risk from sediments with minimal anthropogenic change and no biological risk. A full set of baseline data is provided in support of new monitoring of recent and future anthropogenic impacts on the system.

This study aims understand microplastics from personal care and cosmetic products in Malaysia via quantification and characterization of microplastics together with emission estimation to marine environment. A total of 214 respondents from all over Malaysia were surveyed with identification of top ten personal care and cosmetic products usage. Particles found in facial cleaner/scrub and toothpaste were colored and colorless with majority of granular shapes. Particles in toothpaste were found between 3 and 145 μm while particles in facial cleaner/scrub were found to be between 10 and 178 μm, stipulating the presence of microplastics. Plastic polymers (LDPE and polypropylene) were found in all facial cleaner/scrub samples while only plastic polymers (LDPE) were present in toothpaste sample G. A total of 0.199 trillion microplastics are expected to be released annually to marine environment in Malaysia. Personal care and cosmetic products are seen as one of the microplastics sources for Malaysia and worldwide.

Nitrogen (N) deposition is predicted to impact on the structure and functioning of Mediterranean ecosystems. In this study, we measured plant species composition, production and root phosphatase activity in a field experiment in which N (0, 10, 20 and 50 kg N ha⁻¹ year⁻¹) was added since October 2007 to a semiarid shrubland in central Spain. The characteristically dominant annual forb element responded negatively to N after ~2.5 and ~3.5 years. In contrast, the nitrophilous element (mainly crucifers) increased with N after ~2.5 and ~5.5 years, a response controlled by between-year variations in rainfall and the heterogeneous distribution of P availability. We also described a hierarchy of factors driving the structure and composition of the plant community: soil fertility was the most important driver, whereas calcareousness/acidity of soils and shrub cover played a secondary role; finally, N deposition contributed to explain a smaller fraction of the total variance, and its effects were predominantly negative, which was attributed to ammonium toxicity. Root phosphatase activity of three species was not responsive to N after ~2.5 years but there was a negative relationship with soil P in two of them. We conclude that increased N deposition in semiarid Mediterranean ecosystems of Europe can contribute to cause a shift in plant communities associated with an increase in the nitrophilous element and with a decline in abundance of various forb species adapted to the local conditions.

Soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition is regulated by a complex set of enzymes. However, the influences of biotic and abiotic factors on spatial variations of soil enzyme activity (EA) within ecosystems remain unresolved. Here, we measured EA at different locations within two afforested lands (coniferous woodland and leguminous shrubland), and simultaneously collected data on soil physico-chemical, vegetation-related, and microbial properties to identify the determinants of EA spatial patterns. The results showed that soil organic C and total N contents were the predominant abiotic factors in regulating absolute EA (EA per unit of oven-dry soil mass) in both afforested lands, while soil pH was the predominant factor in regulating specific EA (EA per unit of microbial biomass (MB)). However, the predominant biotic factors varied with the afforested type: the root biomass and MB were the determinants of EA in the shrubland, whereas the tree distribution, litter and root biomass, and bacterial biomass were the determinants in the woodland. Vegetation-related factors (i.e., litter and root biomass) indirectly influenced soil EA by regulating the soil abiotic factors. Compared with the MB, microbial community composition had a minor impact on EA. The variance of specific EA (EA per unit of MB or SOM) explained by selected factors was much lower than that of absolute EA. In addition, the enzymatic C/N ratio within ecosystems did not follow a general pattern (1:1) observed at a global scale. Our results provide novel experimental insight into ecosystem-level spatial variability of C and N cycling via enzymes, suggesting that soil abiotic factors are more reliable than biotic factors to reflect EA spatial patterns across afforested systems.
