Effects of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino) and kelp (Saccharina japonica) mariculture on sources, distribution, and preservation of sedimentary organic carbon in Ailian Bay, China: Identified by coupling stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) with C/N ratio analyses

To investigate the effects of mariculture on the sources, distribution and preservation of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC), sediments from an mariculture area in Ailian Bay, China, and a control area were analyzed for grain size composition, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N). The sedimentary type of sediments in study area was clay silt. TOC, TN, C/N, δ13C, and δ15N ranged from 0.58 to 1.21%, 0.06–0.17%, 6.29–9.82, −23.20 to −18.50‰, and 6.17–7.38‰, respectively, and followed similar spatial patterns. TOC, TN and δ13C were higher in mariculture area than in control area. Biodeposit and kelp OC contributions greater of SOC in mariculture area than the control area (biodeposits: 20.10 ± 4.84 to 6.2 ± 1.3%; kelp: 15.3 ± 6.63 to 5.2 ± 0.84%). Overall, mariculture activities significantly influence the sources, distribution and preservation of SOC.

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Barnegat Bay, October, 29, 2012, damaging shorelines and infrastructure. Estuarine sediment chemistry and toxicity were investigated before and after to evaluate potential environmental health impacts and to establish post-event baseline sediment-quality conditions. Trace element concentrations increased throughout Barnegat Bay up to two orders of magnitude, especially north of Barnegat Inlet, consistent with northward redistribution of silt. Loss of organic compounds, clay, and organic carbon is consistent with sediment winnowing and transport through the inlets and sediment transport modeling results. The number of sites exceeding sediment quality guidance levels for trace elements tripled post-Sandy. Sediment toxicity post-Sandy was mostly unaffected relative to pre-Sandy conditions, but at the site with the greatest relative increase for trace elements, survival rate of the test amphipod decreased (indicating degradation). This study would not have been possible without comprehensive baseline data enabling the evaluation of storm-derived changes in sediment quality.

Forty-three surface sediment samples and one gravity core obtained from the offshore area of the Changjiang River were analyzed for selected heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, As, Hg) to evaluate the spatial distribution and potential ecological risk during the last century. The results indicated that the sediments are composed of silty sand, sandy silt and silt and were deposited in a relatively stable environment over the last century. The studied marine sediments are fine and easily adsorb heavy metals from aquatic systems. The heavy metal concentrations were found to be enriched in the sediments and were generally closely related to anthropogenic activities. However, the data analysis demonstrated that the levels of heavy metal contamination were below background values during the last century, indicating low ecological risk. Spatially, a higher concentration was found at the entrance to the Changjiang River, while it decreased to the northeast. The vertical distribution of contamination levels and ecological risk can be divided into four periods based on the downcore variation in heavy metals: pre-1940s, 1940s–1970s, 1970s–1990s and the late 1990s to the present. These conclusions form the basis for implementing appropriate policies to protect marine sediment quality.

Biotic indices are mainly aimed at assessing levels of deterioration caused by chemical or organic pollution. However, no biotic index to date has been developed to detect impacts of alien species on benthic communities. In this paper, a new biotic index, namely ALEX, is proposed to address the objectives of the Water Framework Directive and was tested in Mersin Bay (Levantine Sea, Turkey). Species were divided into four biogeographic groups, namely native species, casual species, established species and invasive species, and the metric considers the relative importance of these groups in samples. The index classified the ecological status of some stations which are shallow, and close to harbor and river mouths as bad or poor in February and October. The ALEX values were positively and significantly correlated with total nitrogen, silicate and silt percentage in sediment, and negatively correlated with depth and the distance from the harbor.

Plans are being made to construct Dalian Offshore Airport in Jinzhou Bay with a reclamation area of 21km2. The large-scale reclamation can be expected to have negative effects on the marine environment, and these effects vary depending on the reclamation techniques used. Water quality mathematical models were developed and biology resource investigations were conducted to compare effects of an underwater explosion sediment removal and rock dumping technique and a silt dredging and rock dumping technique on water pollution and fishery loss. The findings show that creation of the artificial island with the underwater explosion sediment removal technique would greatly impact the marine environment. However, the impact for the silt dredging technique would be less. The conclusions from this study provide an important foundation for the planning of Dalian Offshore Airport and can be used as a reference for similar coastal reclamation and marine environment protection.

The contents of chemothermal oxidation (CTO)-derived black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) and their stable isotopes (δ¹³CBC and δ¹³COC), including major elemental oxides, and grain sizes were measured to constrain the sources, burial flux, and mass inventory of BC in surface sediments of the Daya Bay. Surface sediments were mainly clayey silt (>90%) and contained 0.28–1.18% OC and 0.05–0.18% BC. Fossil fuel emission and physical erosion contributed to the sedimentary BC sources. High BC/OC ratio (6–30%), burial flux (154.88–922.67 μg cm⁻² y⁻¹), and mass inventory (22–34 Gg y⁻¹) of BC in the upper 5 cm of surface sediments indicated that the Daya Bay is a significant sink of BC. The high accumulation of BC in sediments is attributed to a strong affinity to fine-grained sediments due to the enrichment of muddy biodeposits excrements from the cultured species in the bay.

A combination of biotic indices, geo-accumulation (Igₑₒ) index, and a multivariate approach were applied to assess the anthropogenic influence on the benthic community at five stations from 2018 to 2019 in the Swarnamukhi river estuary, Nellore, India. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis indicated that the Buckingham canal (BC) station showed azoic conditions and formed a separate cluster. Strong positive factor loadings of Cd (0.96), Al (0.93), Zn (0.91), Fe (0.90), Co (0.89), Cu (0.89), Ni (0.87), Pb (0.85), Cr (0.77), organic matter (0.94), Silt (0.92), and clay (0.93) and negative loading of sand (−0.90) showed the variability in sediment. AMBI results illustrated the disturbance status of each station and classified BC station as ‘extremely disturbed’ class, and M-AMBI assessed the ecological status as ‘bad’. The Igₑₒ index also revealed metal (Cd) contamination. The present study illustrated that the combined approach is effective for ecological assessment of coastal ecosystem.

Macrozoobenthos living around several pipelines placed at different depths and sediment types in the Western Adriatic Sea was investigated for three years after structures' deployment to detect possible effects due to their installation and presence. Three environmental habitats were considered based on the grain size (silty clay, clayey silt and sand). Samplings were taken within a radius of 100 m from the pipelines and at control sites. Multivariate and univariate analysis showed peculiarities of the three habitats due to the different sediment type, without differences between pipelines and controls inside each group. Silty clay and clayey silt communities appeared quite similar, being mainly represented by opportunistic species typical of the Adriatic coastal area. Benthic populations found at the offshore relict sand were characterized by a higher percentage of sensitive species. Independently of sediment typology, pipelines' installation seems to not affect the benthic populations that appear more influenced by environmental features.

Heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Co and Cd) in the surface sediments of Cochin estuary, Southwest coast of India were analyzed to understand the spatio-temporal variation and contamination status via six sampling campaigns. Pollution indices like enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and pollution load index inferred that the sediments of the northern arm of the estuary exhibited severe trace metal accumulation. Numerical sediment quality guidelines were applied to assess adverse biological effects of the trace metals, suggesting that occasional biological effect may occur due to Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb. Correlations between metals, organic carbon, silt and clay suggested that both fine grained sediment and organic matter were important carriers for these metals. Multivariate statistics indicated that the sources of Cu and Ni resulted primarily from natural weathering processes, whereas enriched levels of Cd, Cr, Zn and Pb were mainly attributed to anthropogenic activities.

The sediment rejection ability of 8 coral species of 5 families and 3 morphologies were assessed in a series of short term exposure tests over a sedimentation range of 0.5–40mgcm−2d−1 and one longer term exposure test of 235mgcm−2. Sediment accumulation rates on live corals and dead (enamel-covered) skeletons varied between morphologies, with branching species often more adept at self-cleaning. Flow rates (0–17cms−1) significantly affected sediment-shedding ability as did differences in particle sizes, with coarse silt rejected faster than fine silt, but only at very high (235mgcm−2) deposition rates. Siliciclastic sediment was rejected faster than carbonate sediments and smothering for many days by mms of low organic content carbonate sediment resulted in bleaching, but no mortality. The findings are discussed with respect to turbidity generated in natural and dredging-related resuspension events and in the context for impact prediction for dredging projects.
