Plastic polymers are widely used in various applications and are thus prevalent in the environment. Over time, these polymers are slowly degraded into nano- and micro-scale particles. In this study, the free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, was exposed to polystyrene particles of two different sizes (42 and 530 nm) in both liquid and soil media. The number of offspring significantly (p < 0.05) decreased at polystyrene concentrations of 100 mg/L and 10 mg/kg in liquid and soil media, respectively. In soil media, but not liquid media, C. elegans was more sensitive to the larger particles (530 nm) than the smaller particles (42 nm), and the median effective concentration (EC₅₀) values of the 42 and 530 nm-sized particles were found to be > 100 and 14.23 (8.91–22.72) mg/kg, respectively. We performed the same toxicity bioassay on five different field-soil samples with different physicochemical properties and found that the size-dependent effects were intensified in clay-rich soil samples. A principal component analysis showed that the bulk density, cation exchange capacity, clay content, and sand content were the dominant factors influencing the toxicity of the 530 nm-sized polystyrene particles. Therefore, we conclude that the soil composition has a significant effect on the toxicity induced by these 530 nm-sized polystyrene particles.

Plastic mulching is suspected to be a significant source of microplastics in terrestrial environments owing to its intensive application and improper disposal. However, there has been a comparative lack of studies examining this hypothesis. In this study, the occurrence of macroplastics in agricultural soils was investigated by analysing 384 soil samples collected from 19 provinces across China. Additionally, the abundance of microplastics was investigated in potential hotspots that have carried out plastic mulching for over 30 years. Macroplastic concentrations in the soil samples ranged from 0.1 to 324.5 kg/ha, with an average of 83.6 kg/ha; the concentrations were higher in western China than in eastern China. A highly significant linear correlation (R² = 0.61) was found between the consumption of mulching film and the plastic residue in soils, indicating plastic film mulching may be a major source of macroplastics. The abundances of microplastic particles increased over time in the locations where plastic mulching was continuously employed, with concentrations of 80.3 ± 49.3, 308 ± 138.1, and 1075.6 ± 346.8 pieces/kg soil in fields with 5, 15, and 24 y of continuous mulching, respectively. Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that the composition of the microplastics matched that of the mulching films, suggesting the microplastic particles originated from the mulching films. These findings confirm that plastic mulching is an important source of macroplastic and microplastic contamination in terrestrial environments. Further studies to investigate the microplastic hazards in soils are thus necessary.

Lead (Pb) exposure is known to affect the health of children while soil Pb is an important contributor to human Pb exposure. To analyze the effects of both environmental and other factors, especially total and bioaccessible Pb in neighborhood soil, on school-aged urban children’s blood lead level (BLL), 75 children (6–11 years old) were recruited from an industry city in eastern China for BLL measurement and questionnaire survey. Soil samples were collected from their living neighborhoods and measured for total and bioaccessible Pb. The mean BLL was 4.82 μg dL⁻¹, with 42 out of 75 children having BLL exceeding the international guideline of 5 μg dL⁻¹. Low Pb contamination was observed in soil with total Pb ranging from 12.5 to 271 mg kg⁻¹ (mean 34.3 mg kg⁻¹). Based on the in vitro Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium (SBRC) gastric fluid extraction, bioaccessible Pb in soil ranged from 0.40 to 79.1 mg kg⁻¹ (mean 7.58 mg kg⁻¹) with Pb bioaccessibility ranging from 1.74 to 68.1 (mean 19.9%). When BLL was correlated with total Pb in soil, insignificant linear relationship was observed (P > 0.05, correlation coefficient 95%CI = −0.047–0.40, R² = 0.07). However, when BLL was correlated with soil bioaccessible Pb or Pb bioaccessibility, much stronger linear relationships were observed (P < 0.01, correlation coefficient 95%CI = 0.28–0.64, R² = 0.16–0.20), suggesting that bioaccessible Pb was a much stronger predictor of BLL. In addition, strong associations were also observed between BLL and social factors such as house decoration, residence time, and personal habits, suggesting that both soil Pb contamination and social factors play important roles in elevating BLL for city children.

Urban parks are an important part of the urban ecological environment. The environmental quality of parks is related to human health. To evaluate sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of urban parks and their possible health risks, soil samples from 122 parks in Beijing, China, were collected and analyzed. The total content of 16 PAHs between 0.066 and 6.867 mg/kg. Four-ring PAHs were predominant, followed by 5-ring PAHs, while the fraction of 2-ring PAHs was the lowest. The dominant PAHs sources were found to be coal combustion and oil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. A conditional inference tree (CIT) was used to identify the key influencing factors for PAHs. Traffic emissions was the most important factor, followed by coal consumption, as well as the history and location of the park. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for urban park soil in Beijing were low under normal conditions. The soil PAHs exposure pathway risk for both children and adults decreased in the following order: ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The risk from soil in parks to children’s health is slightly higher than that of adults, although the health risk due to exposure to PAHs was not extraordinary. Ecosystem risk was negligible.

Southwestern China contains the largest and most well-developed karst region in the world, and the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) content in the soils of the region is remarkably high. To explore the internal and external control factors and sources of soil PTEs enrichment in this area and to provide a basis for the treatment of PTE pollution, 113 soil samples were collected from Hengxian County, a karst region in Guangxi Province, southwestern China. The importance of eighteen influencing factors including parent material, weathering, physicochemical properties, topography and human activities were quantitatively analyzed by (partial) redundancy analysis. The sources of PTEs were identified using the Pb isotope ratio and absolute principal component score/multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model. The contents of all soil PTEs were higher than the corresponding background values of Guangxi soils. The contents in Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb were the highest in the soil from carbonate rock. The factor group of geological background and weathering explained 26.5% for the accumulation and distribution of soil PTEs and the influence of physicochemical properties was less than 2% but increased to 25.6% through interaction with weathering. Fe (47.1%), Al (42.1%), Mn (22%), chemical index of alteration (12.8%) and clay (11.9%) were the key factors affecting the soil PTEs, while the influence of human activities was weak. Pb isotope ratio and APCS-MLR classified 62.8–74% of soil PTEs as derived from natural sources, whereas 18.23% and 18.95% were derived from industrial activities and agricultural practice/traffic emissions, respectively. The Pb isotope ratio showed that the natural sources account for up to 90% of the Pb in the soil from carbonate rock, the highest contribution among the studied soils. The results of the study can provide background information on the soil PTEs contamination in the karst areas of China and other areas worldwide.

We investigated the levels and distributions of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 159 background soil samples collected from 30 forested mountain sites across China. The sum of DDT was the most abundant OCP, with the concentrations of 0.197–207 ng/g and 0.033–122 ng/g in the O-horizon and A-horizon, respectively. High concentrations of OCPs usually occur near agricultural regions or high consumption areas. The spatial distribution was mainly influenced by the emission sources and soil total organic contents (TOC). The chiral compounds were generally nonracemic in the soils and showed preferential degradation of (−) o,p′- dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, (+) trans-chlordane, and (−) cis-chlordane in both the O- and A-horizons. The enantiomeric fraction (EF) distributions of chiral OCPs displayed no differences across the forest sites in the O-horizon or the A-horizon. Comparing the deviation of EFs from racemic (DEVrac = absolute value of 0.500 - EF) with environmental parameters, we found that DEVrac of cis-chlordane demonstrated a strong positive correlation with TOC (p < 0.05) and the C/N ratio (p < 0.01). This relationship suggests that these factors could affect the microbial activity and significantly impact the extent of enantioselective degradation of chiral compounds in the soils. Fresh and historical applications of DDT and historical chlordane and endosulfan uses may be prominent sources of OCP accumulation in Chinese forest soils.

Soil and sludge are important pools for microplastics (MPs), however standard separation methods for MPs from these pools are still missing. We tested the widely used methods for MPs extraction from water and sediment to six agriculture surface soils and three sewage sludges from municipal wastewater treatment plants and included an additional pre-digestion procedure with 30% H₂O₂ before floatation to remove soil or sludge organic matter (OM). Extraction efficiency of MPs were evaluated under different separation conditions, including floatation solution (NaCl, ZnCl₂, and NaI), filtration membrane, and oxidation solution. Results showed that H₂O₂ pre-digestion significantly increased MPs extraction in soil and sludge, especially the samples with high OM contents, particularly sludge. Floatation solution with higher densities recovered more MPs. The extra released MPs were mainly small fibrous MPs, probably because they are easily retained by aggregates. Our results provide an feasible separation method for MPs in soil and sludge, i.e., pre-digestion with 30% H₂O₂ at 70 °C, floatation with NaI solution, filtration through nylon membrane, and further oxidation with 30% H₂O₂ + H₂SO₄ or 30% H₂O₂ at 70 °C. About 420–1290 MP items/kg soil were detected in soil samples, while much higher numbers (5553–13460 MP items/kg) were found in sludge samples. The dominate morphology of MPs was white fiber with a size of 0.02–0.25 mm, while the main types of MPs, identified by a micro-Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR), were polyethylene and polypropylene in soil samples and polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyacrylonitrile in sludge samples.

2019
López-Ruiz, Rosalía | Romero González, Roberto | Garrido Frenich, Antonia
The dissipation of famoxadone as well as the behaviour of its metabolites in environmental samples such as water and soil is a major concern. In this study, the dissipation of the target compound in both matrices was carried out applying an analytical method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS). The dissipation of famoxadone was monitored over a period of 100 days after the plant protection product, Equation Pro®, was administered to the target matrices. This study was performed at two doses, normal and double in the case of soils and fivefold instead of double dose in water. The concentration of famoxadone steadily decreased during the monitoring period in both matrices. Half-life (DT₅₀) values were lower than 30 days in most cases except for loam soils, for which it was 35 days. Therefore, persistence of this pesticide in both matrices was low. Famoxadone metabolites such as IN-KF015 ((5RS)-5-methyl-5-(4-phenoxyphenyl)-1,3- oxazolidine-2,4-dione) and IN-JS940 ((2RS)-2-hydroxy-2-(4- phenoxyphenyl)propanoic acid) were detected in both matrices and their concentration increased while the concentration of the parent compound decreased. Metabolite IN-JS940 was the compound detected at highest concentration for both matrices. In water the maximum concentration was 20% of the initial famoxadone content and in soils it was 50% of initial famoxadone content. In addition, another metabolite, IN-MN467 ((5RS)-5-methyl-3-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]- 5-(4-phenoxyphenyl)-1,3-oxazolidine-2,4-dione), was detected in soils, following the same behaviour as the other metabolites. These results provided ample information about the behaviour of metabolites and the necessity of knowing their toxicity in both matrices in order to detect possible risks for living beings.

Farmland soil heavy metal contamination could pose potential risks to ecosystems, food safety and human health ultimately. Regional researches on the long-term monitoring of heavy metals in a soil-rice grain system, changed with environmental policy adjustment, have been hindered by limited detailed data. In this study, we collected 169 paired paddy rice grain and corresponding soil samples from a former intensive electronic-waste dismantling region to survey the current status of heavy metal contamination, and to reveal the temporal trends over the past decade based on the previous data obtained in 2006 and 2011. Moderate contaminations of Cd, Cu, Zn and Ni were observed in soil currently. Furthermore, 20.7% of rice grain samples exceeded the Cd threshold value. Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb shared the similar spatial distribution pattern with higher concentrations in northwest, which were contrary to Cr, Ni and As. Risk assessment indicated that much attention is required for the carcinogenic risk of Cr, Cd and As and non-carcinogen risk of Cr. Combining the spatial distribution of heavy metals in soil and rice grains, and the potential ecological risks, with the human health risks, the middle-west rice paddies were identified and proposed as priority areas. Percentage of soil Pb, Cd and Zn decreased in most area and slightly increased in northwest and east. Cu decreased in southwest and increased in central part, while Ni slightly increased in the whole region between 2006 and 2016. With the scrutiny of strict environmental policy, Cd still remained relatively constant levels in soil and rice grains during the last decade, which confirmed that the heavy metals were persisted over the long duration. Target sustainable and ongoing green remediation methods should be adopted urgently in specific area to guarantee food safety and human health for local residents.

Despite being one of the most expensive gourmet foods, it remains unclear if the iconic White Truffle (Tuber magnatum Pico; hereinafter WT) accumulates radioactivity at harmful levels comparable to other fungal species. Here, we measure the active radiocaesium-137 concentration (137Cs) in ten hypogeous WT fruitbodies from southern Hungary, and the soils in which they were growing. All WTs reveal non-significant 137Cs values, thus providing an ‘all clear’ for WT hunters in the species' northernmost habitats, where corresponding soil samples occasionally exhibit slight 137Cs concentrations. Our results are particularly relevant in the light of a rapidly increasing global demand for WTs and their subsequent trading extent and price inflation, because up to 600 kg of fresh fruitbodies are harvested each year in southern Hungary. Moreover, some of Europe's forest ecosystems, in which mushroom picking is common practise, are still contaminated with 137Cs from the Chernobyl fallout more than 30 years ago, posing a serious threat to human health.
