2022
Singh, Adarsh | Katoch, Surjit | Bajpai, Mukul | Rawat, Akash
The use of constructed wetland (CW) is a natural way of treating wastewater sustainably and economically. However, the implementation of these systems in freezing conditions is still a matter of research and development. The treatment capacity of CWs relies largely on the biological and biochemical processes which further depends on physical conditions such as temperature, solar radiations, etc. Application of wetland systems for treating wastewater faces many challenges in regions with cold climates, resolving which this review has been made. This paper presents a thorough understanding of the components of CWs and their role in contaminant removal. A comprehensive review of the different types of CWs has been done describing the treatment efficiency achieved by its implementation in the cold climate. Furthermore, various technologies which can be clubbed with CWs have also been listed along with the treatment efficiencies obtained. Literature survey indicates that the extent of removing organics (COD and BOD5) and total phosphorous (TP) are not likely to be affected, but total nitrogen (TN) removal appears to slow down at low temperatures. Despite several advantages of CW technology, further research is required to select suitable macrophytes and optimum design parameters to compensate for frigid conditions.

2020
Kumar, S. | Deswal, S.
This study aims to examine the ability of free floating aquatic plants to remove phosphorus and to predict the reduction of phosphorus from rice mill wastewater using soft computing techniques. A mesocosm study was conducted at the mill premises under normal conditions, and reliable results were obtained. Four aquatic plants, namely water hyacinth, water lettuce, salvinia, and duckweed were used for this study. The growth of all the plants was inhibited in rice mill wastewater due to low pH, high chemical oxygen demand, high conductivity, and high phosphorus concentration. Subsequently, a 1:1 ratio of mill water to tap water was used. A control was maintained to assess the aquatic plant technology. In this study, the aquatic plants reduced the total phosphorus content up to 80 % within 15 days. A comparison between three modeling techniques e.g. Artificial neural network (ANN), Random forest (RF) and M5P has been done considering the reduction rate of total phosphorus as predicted variable. In this paper, the data set has been divided in two parts, 70 % is used to train the model and residual 30 % is used for testing of the model. Artificial neural network shows promising results as compared to random forest and M5P tree modelling. The root mean square error (RMSE) for all the three models is observed as 0.0162, 0.0204 and 0.0492 for ANN, RF and M5P tree, respectively.

The popular paradigm in trophic dynamic theory is that contemporary autochthonous organic matter (e.g., phytoplankton) sustains consumer growth, whereas aged allochthonous organic matter is conceptually considered recalcitrant resources that may only be used to support consumer respiration but suppress consumer growth. This resource-age paradigm has been challenged by a growing body of recent evidence that ancient (radiocarbon depleted) organic carbon (OC) released from glaciers and permafrost can be incorporated by consumers in aquatic systems. However, little information is available regarding the food quality of ancient terrestrial OC and how it impacts the growth of consumers in lakes. Here, ancient dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was extracted from frozen soils in an alpine lake catchment. The contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in soil DOC increased significantly after bioconversion by heterotrophic bacteria. The utilization of soil DOC by heterotrophic bacteria also increased the total phosphorus concentration in the systems. Gammaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria showed a strong negative correlation with the percentage contents of fluorescent components, including humic-like and tyrosine-like components. Daphnia magna were fed Auxenochlorella vulgaris and ancient DOC plus heterotrophic bacteria. The contents of PUFAs and the growth of zooplankton were influenced by the pre-conversion time of ancient DOC by bacteria. When ancient DOC was pre-converted by bacteria for 27 days, D. magna fed on the mixed diets showed the highest body length (3.40 mm) and intrinsic rate of increase in population (0.49 d⁻¹). Our findings provide direct evidence that ancient terrestrial OC can be an important subsidy for lake secondary production, which have important implications for food webs in high-altitude and polar lakes.

The widespread presence and persistence of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in wastewater treatment plants, as well as its toxicity and bioaccumulation potential, necessitates the investigation on their impact on bioreactor performance. A 48-day exposure test was adopted to study the effects of low (10 μg L-1) and high (1000 μg L-1) PFOS concentrations in a sequencing batch reactor on the performance, composition, and microbial community of activated sludge. The results suggested that adding PFOS at low and high concentrations lowered the removal efficiency of total nitrogen by 22.48% (p < 0.01) and 16.30% (p < 0.01) respectively, while enhanced that of total phosphorus by 1.87% (p > 0.05) and 7.07% (p < 0.05) respectively, compared with the control group. The addition of PFOS also led to the deterioration of activated sludge dewatering performance. Composition and spectroscopic measurements revealed that the PFOS dosage changed the composition of the activated sludge. Furthermore, the PFOS altered the structure and function of the activated sludge microbial community as well as key enzyme activities.

Periphyton is considered important for removal of organic pollutants from water bodies, but knowledge of the impacts of antibiotics on the community structure and ecological function of waterbodies remains limited. In this study, the effects of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) on the communities of photoautotrophic epilithon and epipelon and its effect on nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the water column were studied in a 12-day mesocosm experiment. The dynamics of nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the epipelon and epilithon experiment showed similar patterns. The concentrations of total nitrogen, dissolved total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, total phosphorus and dissolved total phosphorus in the water column increased rapidly during the initial days of exposure, after which a downward trend occurred. In the epilithon experiment, we found that the photosynthesis (Fv/Fm) and biomass of epilithon were significantly (P < 0.05) stimulated in the low concentration group. Contrarily, growth and photosynthesis (Fv/Fm) were significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in the medium and high concentration group. We further found that the photosynthetic efficiency of photoautotrophic epilithon was negatively correlated with the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water column (P < 0.05). Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the communities of epilithic algae in the control group and in the low concentration group were significantly (P < 0.05) different from that of the high concentration group during the initial 4 days. After 8 days’ exposure, all groups tended to be similar, indicating that epilithon showed rapid adaptability and/or resilience. Similar results were found for the relative abundance of some epilithic algae. Our findings indicate that the biofilm system has strong tolerance and adaptability to OTC as it recovered fast after an initial suppression, thus showing the important role of periphyton in maintaining the dynamic balance of nutrients with other processes in aquatic ecosystems.

Antibiotics usage in animal production is considered a primary driver of the occurrence, supply and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. Pig farms and fish ponds are important breeding systems in food animal production. In this study, we compared and analyzed broad ARGs profiles, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial communities in a representative pig farm and neighboring fish ponds around Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. The factors influencing the distribution of ARGs were also explored. The results showed widespread detection of ARGs (from 57 to 110) among 283 targeted ARGs in the collected water samples. The differences in the number and relative abundance of ARGs observed from the pig farm and neighboring fish ponds revealed that ARG contamination was more serious on the pig farm than in the fish ponds and that the water treatment plant on the pig farm was not very effective. Based on the variance partition analysis (VPA), MGEs, bacterial communities and water quality indicators (WIs) codrive the relative abundance of ARGs. Based on network analysis, we found that total phosphorus and Tp614 were the most important WIs and MGEs affecting ARG abundance, respectively. Our findings provide fundamental data on farms in lakeside districts and provide insights into establishing standards for the discharge of aquaculture wastewater.

Optimizing landscape pattern to reduce the risk of non-point source (NPS) pollution is an effective measure to improve river water quality. The “source-sink” landscape theory is a recent research tool for landscape pattern analysis that can effectively integrate landscape type, area, spatial location, and topographic features to depict the spatial heterogeneity of NPS pollution. Based on this theory, we quantitatively analyzed the influence of “source-sink” landscape pattern on the river water quality in one of the most intensive agricultural watersheds in Southeastern China. The results indicated that the proportion of “sink” landscape (68.59%) was greater than that of “source” landscape (31.41%) in the study area. In addition, when elevation and slope increased, the “source” landscape proportion decreased, and the “sink” landscape proportion increased. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollutants in rivers showed significant seasonal and spatial variations. Farmland was the primary source of nitrate nitrogen (NO₃⁻-N) and total nitrogen (TN) pollution, whereas residential land was the primary source of ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) and total phosphorus (TP) pollution. Intensively cultivated areas and densely inhabited areas degraded water quality despite high proportions of forest land. The four “source-sink” landscape indices (LWLI, LWLI'e, LWLI's, LWLI'd) had significant positive correlations with NO₃⁻-N and TN and weak correlations with NH₄⁺-N and TP. The capacity of LWLI to quantify the NPS pollution was greater in agricultural areas than in residential areas. The “source-sink” landscape thresholds resulted in abrupt changes in water quality. When LWLI was ∼0.35, the probability of river water quality degradation increased sharply. The results suggest the importance of optimizing the “source-sink” landscape pattern for mitigating agricultural NPS pollution and provide policy makers with adequate new information on the agroecosystem-environmental interface in highly developed agricultural watersheds.

Fish community manipulation and regulation has been largely overlooked as a mitigation strategy for restoring submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in shallow lakes of the middle and lower Yangtze River Basin (MLYRB). An in-situ fish exclusion experiment and a large-scale lake manipulation were conducted to test the hypothesis that the reasonable removal of benthivorous and herbivorous fish would facilitate the restoration and reconstruction of SAV in shallow lakes within the MLYRB. The in-situ exclusion experiment was conducted from April to October in 2017. Electrofishing was used to remove benthivorous and herbivorous fish from the exclosures. SAV were then artificially planted in the same pattern and density in both exclosures and adjacent open sites, and responses were measured for seven consecutive months. The mean percent coverage and biomass of SAV in the exclosures increased quickly and remained significantly higher than those in open sites over the duration of the experiment. Water quality also improved as turbidity, chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus and total nitrogen in the exclosures remained significantly lower than those in the open sites. After the in-situ experiment, a larger scale manipulation of fish in the entire submerged macrophyte zone (SMZ) was implemented from 2017 to 2020. After removing more than 2/3 of the benthivorous and herbivorous fish biomass by October 2020 in the SMZ, both the species richness and spatial coverage of SAV increased from 2 to 9 and from 1.7% to 32.2%, respectively. Our results provided clear evidence that fish are strong regulators of SAV productivity and that their reasonable removal facilitates ecological recovery. Therefore, we propose that fish community manipulation as implemented in this study be given more attention in addition to the reduction of external nutrient loading when designing projects to restore SAV in shallow lakes of the MLYRB.

The effects of voltage intensity on the nutrient removal performance and microbial community in the iron electrolysis-integrated aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system were investigated over a period of 15 weeks. Results revealed that the application outcomes of iron electrolysis for AGS systems relied on voltage intensity. When a constant voltage of 1.5 V was applied, the sludge granulation was most obviously accelerated with a specific growth rate of the sludge diameter of 0.078 day⁻¹, and the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) increased by 14.1% and 20.2%, respectively, compared to the control reactor (without the iron electrolysis-integration). Moreover, the AGS developed at different voltages included different microbial communities, whose shifts were driven by the Fe content and the average diameter of AGS. Both heterotrophic nitrifiers and mixotrophic denitrifiers were significantly enriched in the AGS developed at 1.5 V, which effectively enhanced TN removal. Together with the response of the functional genes involved in Fe, N, and P metabolism, the electrolytic iron-driven nutrient degradation pathway was further elaborated. Overall, this study clarified the optimum voltage condition when iron electrolysis was integrated into the AGS system, and revealed the enhancement mechanism of this coupling technology on nutrient removal during the treatment of low-strength municipal wastewater.

2021
Xie, En | Su, Yuping | Deng, Songqiang | Kontopyrgou, Maria | Zhang, Dayi
It is well-accepted that phosphorus, particularly orthophosphate, is a determinant factor in aquatic eutrophication. However, numerous kinds of phosphorus sources exist in real world scenario, and limited studies have characterized the pairwise relationships among abundant different phosphorus sources and the physiological behaviour of algae. The present study developed a high-throughput assay to investigate the effects of 59 different phosphorus sources (equal initial concentration of total phosphorus) on the growth and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activities of Microcystis aeruginosa, a model cyanobacteria whose predominance holds sway in lake eutrophication. M. aeruginosa cultivated with nucleoside monophosphates (NMPs) had higher growth, relative AKP activities and residual orthophosphate, which were positively intercorrelated. Oppositely, non-NMPs cultivation of M. aeruginosa led to negative relationships between the relative AKP activities and their growth or residual orthophosphate. These results indicated distinct mechanisms for M. aeruginosa to utilize different phosphorus sources in real-world scenario, and both phosphorus source and content are determinant factors on the growth and physiological behaviour of M. aeruginosa. Given the complicated and vast phosphorus pool in the natural environment, phosphorus resources might significantly alter the abundance and physiological behaviour of M. aeruginosa and other bloom-forming algae, then influence the phytoplanktonic community structure and affect the possibility and intensity of algal bloom. Our work hints the underestimation of the restriction factors in lake eutrophication and provides a new tool to study the driven forces of phytoplanktonic community dynamics as phosphorus from both internal and external sources.
