Environmental contamination by heavy metals is a common fact in Central Asia. In the present study two sampling procedures were achieved: (i) Sampling of fodder, camel raw milk and shubat (fermented camel milk) in 8 farms closed to pollution sources from the South of Kazakhstan for copper, iron, manganese, zinc, arsenic and lead analysis, (ii) sampling of camel milk in 4 regions of Kazakhstan (63 samples) analyzed for lead, chrome and zinc contamination. In first sampling, camel milk contained 0.07 ± 0.04, 1.48 ± 0.53, 0.08 ± 0.03, 5.16 ± 2.17, <0.1 and 0.025 ± 0.02 ppm respectively for Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, As and Pb. In shubat (fermented milk) the mean content was 0.163 ± 0.164, 1.57 ± 0.46, 0.088 ± 0.02, 7.217 ± 2.55 and 0.007 ppm respectively. Arsenic was detected in some samples of milk and shubat only. The trace elements concentration increase in shubat compared to milk but lead concentration decreased. No clear correlation was observed with fodder composition. In second sampling, the lead content was on average 250 ± 56 ppb in the camel milk with no significant differences between regions. The maximum value was observed at Atyrau (532 ppb). Zinc content in milk (5.42 ± 0.2 ppm) did not change significantly between regions. In reverse, chrome (59.5 ± 45.4 ppb) was higher in Shymkent region compared to others. These values were discussed according to the proximity of pollution sources. Specially, higher concentrations were experienced in fodder from pastures close to some industrial sites or high traffic road. (Résumé d'auteur)

International audience | Some drinking water reservoirs under the vineyards of Burgundy are contaminated with herbicides. Thus the effectiveness of alternative soil management practices, such as grass cover, for reducing the leaching of glyphosate and its metabolite, AMPA, through soils was studied. The leaching of both molecules was studied in structured soil columns under outdoor conditions for 1 year. The soil was managed under two vineyard soil practices: a chemically treated bare calcosol, and a vegetated calcosol. After 680 mm of rainfall, the vegetated calcosol leachates contained lower amounts of glyphosate and AMPA (0.02% and 0.03%, respectively) than the bare calcosol leachates (0.06% and 0.15%, respectively). No glyphosate and only low amounts of AMPA (<0.01%) were extracted from the soil. Glyphosate, and to a greater extent, AMPA, leach through the soils; thus, both molecules may be potential contaminants of groundwater. 9 pages | International audience | The influence of different organic amendments on diuron leaching was studied through undisturbed vineyard soil columns. Two composts (A and D), the second at two stages of maturity, and two soils (VR and Bj) were sampled. After 1 year, the amount of residues (diuron þ metabolites) in the leachates of the VR soil (0.19e0.71%) was lower than in the Bj soil (4.27e8.23%), which could be explained by stronger diuron adsorption on VR. An increase in the amount of diuron leached through the amended soil columns, compared to the blank, was observed for the Bj soil only. This result may be explained by the formation of mobile complexes between diuron and water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) through the Bj soil, or by competition between diuron and WEOM for the adsorption sites in the soil. For both soils, the nature of the composts and their degree of maturity did not significantly influence diuron leaching.

International audience | Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines are frequently detected antibiotics in aquatic sediments. In this study, the transport of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TET) was investigated in sediments from the Seine Estuary (France), under nitrate reducing conditions. Dynamic flow experiments showed that although TET and CIP strongly interacted with the sediment components through adsorption and (bio)-chemical transformation, they kept their antimicrobial activities. Less nitrate reduction was observed during the first period of breakthrough, while TET and CIP were absent in the column effluent. Batch experiments with freeze-dried vs fresh sediments showed that adsorption and abiotic degradation are the major removal processes, while microbe-driven transformation is of less importance. Whereas TET is to a large extent chemically transformed and little adsorbed in the sediment, CIP was less transformed and more adsorbed, most likely due to the great reactivity of TET with redox-active mineral surfaces. Our findings show the strong capacity of natural sediment to retain and transform antibiotics, while still maintaining their antimicrobial activity or inhibitory effect of nitrate reducing activity.

International audience | Calcium dissolved deposition shows an unusual spatial structure in France, probably due to the contribution of southern air masses from Mediterranean Sea and Saharan desert. These masses are often loaded with terrigenous particles that contain carbonates. However, no precise relationship has been quantified between dissolved Ca and mineral dust deposition (MDD). The database of the French network RENECOFOR, gathering atmospheric deposition <0.45 mu m in 27 sites near forests during 18 years, was used to determine the non-sea-salt atmospheric deposition over France. This study (1) explores the relationship between dissolved components to decipher their origin in atmospheric deposition nearby forests and (2) tests the use of dissolved Ca and Mg as proxies for MDD. In the RENECOFOR database, non-sea-salt Ca (nssCa) preferentially deposited between May and August. MDD observed in RENECOFOR was synchronic with high nssCa deposition, particularly in June 2008, when air mass highly loaded with Saharan dust covered France. The dissolution of this mineral dust likely contributed to the nssCa deposition of this period and suggested a relationship between the depositions of nssCa and MDD. Then, MDD was specifically sampled with dissolved deposition in four sampling sites. Encouraging relationships were found between MDD and the depositions of nssMg and nssCa, suggesting that the latter could be used as a proxy for MDD in regions where it is not monitored, and in a retrospective approach in order to calculate nutrient fluxes.

The excessive arsenic (As) accumulation in plant tissues enforced toxic impacts on growth indices. So, the utilization of As-contaminated food leads to risks associated with human health. For the reduction of As concentrations in foods, it is obligatory to fully apprehend the take up, accretion, transportation and toxicity mechanisms of As within plant parts. This metalloid impairs the plant functions by disturbing the metabolic pathways at physio-biochemical, cellular and molecular levels. Though several approaches were utilized to reduce the As-accumulation and toxicity in soil-plant systems. Recently, engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) such a zinc oxide (ZnO), silicon dioxide or silica (SiO₂), iron oxide (FeO) and copper oxide (CuO) have emerged new technology to reduce the As-accumulation or phytotoxicity. But, the mechanistic approaches with systematic explanation are missing. By knowing these facts, our prime focus was to disclose the mechanisms behind the As toxicity and its mitigation by ENPs in higher plants. ENPs relives As toxicity and its oxidative damages by regulating the transporter or defense genes, modifying the cell wall composition, stimulating the antioxidants defense, phytochelatins biosynthesis, nutrients uptake, regulating the metabolic processes, growth improvement, and thus reduction in As-accumulation or toxicity. Yet, As-detoxification by ENPs depends upon the type and dose of ENPs or As, exposure method, plant species and experimental conditions. We have discussed the recent advances and highlight the knowledge or research gaps in earlier studies along with recommendations. This review may help scientific community to develop strategies such as applications of nano-based fertilizers to limit the As-accumulation and toxicity, thus healthy food production. These outcomes may govern sustainable application of ENPs in agriculture.

Developing effective remediation methods for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-contaminated soils is a substantial step towards counteracting their widespread occurrence and protecting our ecosystems and drinking water sources. Stabilisation of PFAS in the subsurface using colloidal activated carbon (CAC) is an innovative, yet promising technique, requiring better understanding. In this study, dynamic soil column tests were used to assess the retardation of 10 classical perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) (C₅–C₁₁ perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and C₄, C₆, C₈ perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs)) as well as two alternative PFAS (6:2 and 8:2 fluorotelomer sulfonates) using CAC at 0.03% w/w, to investigate the fate and transport of PFAS under CAC treatment applications. Results showed high retardation rates for long-chain PFAS and eight times higher retardation for the CAC-treated soil compared to the non-treated reference soil for the ∑PFAS. Replacement of shorter chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), such as perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), by longer chained PFAS was observed, indicating competition effects. Partitioning coefficients (Kd values) were calculated for the CAC fraction at ∼10³–10⁵ L kg⁻¹ for individual PFAS, while there was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between perfluorocarbon chain length and Kd. Mass balance calculations showed 37% retention of ∑PFAS in treated soil columns after completion of the experiments and 99.7% higher retention rates than the reference soil. Redistribution and elution of CAC were noticed and quantified through organic carbon analysis, which showed a 23% loss of carbon during the experiments. These findings are a step towards better understanding the extent of CAC's potential for remediation of PFAS-contaminated soil and groundwater and the limitations of its applications.

Microplastics are emerging contaminants and widely distributed in the environment. They are considered as a vector of numerous organic pollutants including antibiotics in aquatic environments and thereby influence their distribution and transport behaviors. However, the effects of microplastics on the environmental behavior of antibiotics in soils remain largely unclear. In this paper, the influence of polyamide (PA) microplastics on sorption and transport of the selected antibiotic [oxytetracycline (OTC)] in a sandy loamy soil was studied by performing batch and column experiments. Results show that PA microplastics increase the pH of reaction systems, which contributes to OTC sorption onto the tested soils. However, altering pH is not the key influencing mechanism because the overall sorption capacity decreases slightly after adding PA microplastics, which can be attributed to the dilution effect. Reduction of OTC sorption by adding microplastics promotes the migration of OTC in the tested soil, which could be demonstrated by the results of column experiments that the breakthrough of OTC occurs earlier with an increasing content of PA microplastics. According to the fitting parameters of HYDRUS−1D model, PA microplastics can affect the transport of OTC by altering the soil pore structure and dispersion coefficient. These results provide new insight into the interaction between microplastics and organic pollutants in soil environments.

The release of fine particles from biochar materials applied in the environment may have important environmental implications, such as mobilization of environmental contaminants. In natural environments biochar fine particles can undergo various transformation processes, which may change their surface chemistry and consequently, the mobility of the particles. Here, we show that sulfide reduction can significantly alter the transport of wheat-straw- and pine-wood-derived biochar fine particles in saturated porous media. Counterintuitively, the sulfide-reduced biochar particles exhibited greater mobility in artificial groundwater than their non-reduced counterparts, even though reduction led to decrease of surface charge negativity and increase of hydrophobicity (from the removal of surface O-functional groups), both should favor particle deposition, as predicted based on extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. Using transport experiments conducted in single-cation background solutions containing K⁺, Mg²⁺ or Ca²⁺ under different pH conditions, we show that the surprisingly greater mobility of sulfide-reduced biochar particles was attributable to the removal of surface carboxyl groups during reduction, as this markedly alleviated particle deposition through cation bridging, wherein Ca²⁺ acted as the bridging agent in linking the surface O-functional groups of biochar particles and quartz sand. These findings show the critical roles of surface properties in dictating the mobility of biochar fine particles and call for further understanding of their transport properties, which apparently cannot be simply extrapolated based on the findings of other (engineered) carbonaceous nanomaterials.
