The aim of the proposed research is to investigate the effects of UV-radiation on chemical composition, palatability and digestibility of summer pasture plants of reindeer. The studies are planned to be conducted in natural peatland ecosystems with (I) enhanced UV-B radiation, provided by UV-B lamps and (II) with UV-filtration experiments with the same plant species in reindeer pastures in the Lappi Reindeer Herding Cooperative in Eastern Finnish Lapland. The results will provide information about the effects of ambient and enhanced UV radiation on summer pastures of reindeer and can be used to evaluate their consequences on reindeer management

Carbonaceous aerosols pose significant climatic impact, however, their sources and respective contribution to light absorption vary and remain poorly understood. In this work, filter-based PM₂.₅ samples were collected in winter of 2021 at three urban sites in Yibin, a fast-growing city in the south of Sichuan Basin, China. The composition characteristics of PM₂.₅, light absorption and source of carbonaceous aerosol were analyzed. The city-wide average concentration of PM₂.₅ was 87.4 ± 31.0 μg/m³ in winter. Carbonaceous aerosol was the most abundant species, accounting for 42.5% of the total PM₂.₅. Source apportionment results showed that vehicular emission was the main source of PM₂.₅ during winter, contributing 34.6% to PM₂.₅. The light absorption of black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) were derived from a simplified two-component model. We apportioned the light absorption of carbonaceous aerosols to BC and BrC using the Least Squares Linear Regression with optimal angstrom absorption exponent of BC (AAEBC). The average absorption of BC and BrC at 405 nm were 51.6 ± 21.5 Mm⁻¹ and 17.7 ± 8.0 Mm⁻¹, respectively, with mean AAEBC = 0.82 ± 0.02. The contribution of BrC to the absorption of carbonaceous reached 26.1% at 405 nm. Based on the PM₂.₅ source apportionment and the mass absorption cross-section (MAC) value of BrC at 405 nm, vehicle emission was found to be the dominant source of BrC in winter, contributing up to 56.4%. Therefore, vehicle emissions mitigation should be the primary and an effective way to improve atmospheric visibility in this fast-developing city.

Estimating the burden of diseases induced by overexposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (SUVR) can help to prioritize environmental health interventions. The age-sex specific and cause-specific mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to overexposure to SUVR at the national and subnational levels in Iran, 2005–2019 were estimated. The burden of disease induced by overexposure to SUVR was quantified in four steps as follows: (1) estimating exposure to SUVR, (2) estimating total incidences and deaths of target causes, (3) assessing population attributable fractions of the target causes for the SUVR, and (4) calculating the attributable burden of disease. The attributable DALYs, deaths, age-standardized DALY rate, and age-standardized death rate at the national level were determined to be respectively 21896, 252, 42.59, and 0.56 in 2005 and were respectively changed to 28665, 377, 38.76, and 0.53 in 2019. The contributions of causes in the attributable DALYs at the national level were different by year and sex and for both sexes in 2019 were as follows: 46.15% for cataract, 20.36% for malignant skin melanoma, 16.07% for sunburn, 12.41% for squamous-cell carcinoma, and 5.01% for the other five causes. The contributions of population growth, population ageing, risk exposure, and risk-deleted DALY rate in the temporal variations of the attributable burden of disease in the country were +20.73%, +20.68%, +2.01%, and −12.51%. The highest and lowest provincial attributable age-standardized DALY rates in 2019 were observed in Fars (46.8) and Ardebil (32.7), respectively. The burden of disease induced by exposure to SUVR caused relatively low geographical inequality in health status in Iran. Due to increasing trends of the SUVR as well as the attributable burden of disease, the preventive interventions against the SUVR overexposure should be considered in the public health action plan all across the country.

Mutations are an important origin of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. While there is increasing evidence showing promoted resistance mutations by environmental stresses, no retrospective research has yet been conducted on this phenomenon and its mechanisms. Herein, we summarized the phenomena of stress-elevated resistance mutations in bacteria, generalized the regulatory mechanisms and discussed the environmental and human health implications. It is shown that both chemical pollutants, such as antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, biocides, metals, nanoparticles and disinfection byproducts, and non-chemical stressors, such as ultraviolet radiation, electrical stimulation and starvation, are capable of elevating resistance mutations in bacteria. Notably, resistance mutations are more likely to occur under sublethal or subinhibitory levels of these stresses, suggesting a considerable environmental concern. Further, mechanisms for stress-induced mutations are summarized in several points, namely oxidative stress, SOS response, DNA replication and repair systems, RpoS regulon and biofilm formation, all of which are readily provoked by common environmental stresses. Given bacteria in the environment are confronted with a variety of unfavorable conditions, we propose that the stress-elevated resistance mutations are a universal phenomenon in the environment and represent a nonnegligible risk factor for ecosystems and human health. The present review identifies a need for taking into account the pollutants’ ability to elevate resistance mutations when assessing their environmental and human health risks and highlights the necessity of including resistance mutations as a target to prevent antibiotic resistance evolution.

Recalcitrant plastics in the environment are gradually fragmented into weathered debris distinguished from their original state by the integrative action of influencing factors, such as UV light, heating and physical abrasion. As new artificial carbon-source substrates in aquatic ecosystems, plastic products can be colonized by biofilms and even utilized by microorganisms. To investigate the influences of weathering of plastics on the colonized biofilms, freshwater samples from the Yangtze River (Nanjing, China) were collected for biofilm incubation. Based on the characterization of plastics and biofilms, the effects of plastic surface properties on biofilm characteristics were revealed by the analysis of partial least squares regression (PLSR). Roughness was the principal influencing factor, while rigidity had the opposite effect to it. 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing results indicated the high relative abundance of Cyanobacteria and rising proportion of harmful components (e.g., Flavobacterium) on photoaged polyethylene plastics. The microbial functional profiles (KEGG) predicted by Tax4Fun showed that the functions (e.g., membrane transport, energy metabolism, etc.) of biofilm on photoaged plastics were dissimilar with those on original ones. These findings suggested that the distinct microbial community and the adverse functional changes in biofilms on photoaged plastics potentially enhanced their environmental risks. On the other hand, 28-day cultured biofilms on original low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films were dominated by Exiguobacterium. The previously ignored potentials of this microorganism in rapidly accommodating to a hydrophobic substrate and its plastic degrading ability were both worthy of attention. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the weathering process of plastics in exploring the “plastisphere”, and to give further insights into the double-edged nature of the “plastisphere".

As an emerging brominated flame retardant (BFR), tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) has been frequently detected in the environmental media and organisms. Knowledges on the transformation and fate of TBBPS in both environment and engineering systems are essential to its ecological risk assessment. Herein, we reported the photochemical decomposition of TBBPS in aqueous solution upon 254 nm ultraviolet irradiation (UV₂₅₄). Results show that TBBPS was highly photoreactive, most likely due to the presence of four ortho-bromine substituents. The molar absorption coefficient and quantum yield of TBBPS were found to be pH-dependent, with the monoanionic form being most photoreactive. A series of photoproducts were identified by solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-ESI(+)-MS/MS. The photolysis of TBBPS likely proceeded through photonucleophilic substitution, photoreductive debromination, and β-scission reactions. A ketocarbene, possibly derived from the lower lying excited triplet state, was proposed to be involved in the photolysis of TBBPS. Ion chromatography analysis revealed that debromination occurred quickly, and the yield of bromide (Br⁻) approached 100% after 90 min irradiation. The presence of SRNOM and MRNOM inhibited the photodegradation rate of TBBPS, which is likely due to the light-screening and physical quenching effects of natural organic matter (NOM). Our results reveal that photolysis is an important process for the attenuation of TBBPS in aquatic system; however, naturally occurring species such as NOM can appreciably retard the decay of TBBPS.

Fabric and foam samples from popular children car seats marketed in the United States during 2018 were tested for fluorine content by particle-included gamma ray emission spectroscopy (PIGE, n = 93) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, n = 36), as well as for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS and GC/MS, n = 36). PFAS were detected in 97% of the car seat samples analyzed with MS, with total concentrations of 43 PFAS (∑PFAS) up to 268 ng/g. Fabric samples generally had greater ∑PFAS levels than foam and laminated composites of foam and fabric. The three fabric samples with the highest total fluorine content as represented by the highest PIGE signal were also subjected to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. Results from these treatments, as well as the much higher organofluorine levels measured by PIGE compared to LC/MS and GC/MS, suggested the presence of side-chain fluorotelomer-based polymers (FTPs), which have the potential to readily degrade into perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) under UV light. Furthermore, fluorotelomer (meth)acrylates were found to be indicators for the presence of (meth)acrylate-linked FTPs in consumer products, and thus confirmed that at least half of the tested car seats had FTP-treated fabrics. Finally, extraction of selected samples with synthetic sweat showed that ionic PFAS, particularly those with fluorinated carbons ≤8, can migrate from fabric to sweat, suggesting a potential dermal route of exposure.

This review is intended to evaluate the use of ferrate (Fe(VI)), being a green coagulant, sustainable and reactive oxidant, to remove micro pollutants especially pharmaceutical pollutants in contaminated water. After a brief description of advanced oxidation processes, fundamental dimensions regarding the nature, reactivity, and chemistry of this oxidant are summarized. The degradation of contaminants by Fe(VI) involves several mechanisms and reactive agents which are critically evaluated. The efficiency and chemistry of Fe(VI) oxidation differs according to the reaction conditions and activation agent, such as soluble Fe(VI) processes, which involve Fe(VI), UV light, and electro-Fe(VI) oxidation. Fe(VI) application methods (including single dose, multiple doses, chitosan coating etc), and Fe(VI) with activating agents (including sulfite, thiosulfate, and UV) are also described to degrade the micro pollutants. Besides, application of Fe(VI) to remove pharmaceuticals in wastewater are intensely studied. Electrochemical prepared Fe(VI) has more wide application than wet oxidation method. Meanwhile, we elaborated Fe(VI) performance, limitations, and proposed innovative aspects to improve its stability, such as the generation of Fe(III), synergetic effects, nanopores entrapment, and nanopores capsules. This study provides conclusive direction for synergetic oxidative technique to degrade the micro pollutants.
