High throughput analysis of 21 perfluorinated compounds in drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent from southern China by supramolecular solvents-based microextraction coupled with HPLC-Orbitrap HRMS

The present work reported a high-throughput strategy for the analysis of 21 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent from southern China by supramolecular solvent (SUPARS) vortex-mixed microextraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-Orbitrap HRMS). The SUPRAS without heating assistance is less solvent-consumption, meeting the requirements for green environmental protection and sustainable development. Parameters in the microextraction such as volume of dodecanol and tetrahydrofuran (THF), vortexing extraction and centrifugation time, salt concentration were investigated. The optimal extraction conditions were 250 μL of undecanol, 1.0 mL of THF and 20.0% (w/v, 4 g) NaCl. Under the optimum conditions, method limit of detection and method limit of quantitation in the ranges of 0.01–0.08 μg/L and 0.03–0.25 μg/L, good recoveries (72.5–117.8%) and intra-day precision (1.1–11.2%, n = 6), high enrichment factors (48–78) were obtained. The developed method was successfully applied for analysis of PFCs in 13 drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent samples collected from southern China. Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water with concentration of 0.48 μg/L and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water and two plant effluent samples with concentrations in the range of 0.14–0.67 μg/L.

Pollution by plastics is a global problem, in particular through the contamination of aquatic environments and biodiversity. Although plastic contamination is well documented in the aquatic fauna of the oceans and large rivers of the world, there are few data on the organisms of headwater streams, especially in tropical regions. In the present study, we evaluated the contamination of small fish by plastics in Amazonian streams. For this, we evaluated the shape and size, and the abundance of plastics in the gastrointestinal tracts and gills of 14 fish species from 12 streams in eastern Brazilian Amazon. We used a Generalized Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) to compare the levels of contamination among species and between organs. Only one individual of the 68 evaluated (a small catfish Mastiglanis cf. asopos) contained no plastic particles, and no difference was found in the contamination of the gills and digestive tract. However, Hemigrammus unilineatus presented less contamination of both the gills and the digestive tract than the other species, while Polycentrus schomburgkii had less plastic in the gastrointestinal tract, whereas Crenicichla regani and Pimelodella gerii both had a larger quantity of plastic adhered to their gills in comparison with the other species. Nanoplastics and microplastics adhered most to the gills, while plastic fibers were the most common type of material overall. This is the first study to analyze plastic contamination in fish from Amazonian streams, and in addition to revealing high levels of contamination, some species were shown to possibly be more susceptible than others. This reinforces the need for further, more systematic research into the biological and behavioral factors that may contribute to the greater vulnerability of some fish species to contamination by plastics.Amazonian stream fish show contamination by plastics. The species respond differently. The smaller the particle, the easier it is to adhere to the gills.

Characteristics and transformation of organic phosphorus in water are vital to biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus and support of blooms of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria. Using solution ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), combined with field surveys and lab analyses, composition and structural characteristics of dissolved phosphorus (DP), particulate phosphorus (PP) and organic P in algae were studied in two eutrophic lakes in China, Tai Lake and Chao Lake. Factors influencing migration and transformation of these constituents in lake ecosystems were also investigated. A method was developed to extract, flocculate and concentrate DP and PP from lake water samples. Results showed that orthophosphate (Ortho-P) constituted 32.4%–81.3% of DP and 43.7%–54.9% of PP, respectively; while monoester phosphorus (Mono-P) was 13.2%–54.0% of DP and 32.9%–43.7% of PP, respectively. Phosphorus in algae was mostly organic P, especially Mono-P, which was ≥50% of TP. Environmental factors and water quality parameters such as temperature (T), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, secchi depth (SD), dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (CODcᵣ), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), affected the absolute and relative concentrations of various P components in the two lakes. Increased temperature promoted bioavailable P (Ortho-P and Mono-P) release to the lake waters. The results can provide an important theoretical basis for the mutual conversion process of organic P components between various media in the lake water environment.

The occurrence of microplastics was investigated in water, sediment and fish from the Fengshan River system. All collected samples contained microplastics with 334–1058 items/m³ in the water samples, 508-3987 items/kg dry weight in the sediment samples and 14–94 items/fish in the fish samples. The spatial distribution of microplastics in water and sediments was attributed to anthropogenic discharges, flow dynamics, tidal exchanges and microplastic density. This was evidenced by significant correlations of microplastics with the river pollution index (RPI), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solid (SS), flow velocity and the presence of different polymer types of microplastics in water and sediment. Microplastic abundance in fish was correlated to SS, pH and conductivity, indicating that these water quality variables might affect bioavailability of microplastics to fish. Concentrations of microplastics/cm length of demersal fish at a higher trophic level (Leiognathus equulus and Pomadasys argenteus) were higher than those of a benthopelagic fish (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus). The significant relationships observed suggest that collected fish might prefer to ingest long fibrous microplastics from sediments and large fragmented microplastics from water. The high levels of 3- and 4-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), particularly fluoranthene and pyrene, in fish muscle revealed that the collected fish species might have a high ability to accumulate these PAHs from food and the environment. Significant relationships between some PAHs in fish and microplastic abundances in water/sediments/fish suggested that these PAHs might be accumulated by fish from contaminated microplastics. This study provides unique information on the factors influencing the spatial distribution of microplastics and the role of microplastics on the accumulation of PAHs by fish.

Irinotecan (CPT-11) is a water-soluble anticancer drug widely used to treat several types of cancer.Even if the metabolites of CPT-11 are well-known and investigated, only limited information is available in the literature about the formation of photo-degradation products that can naturally originate from sunlight irradiation when the drug is released in aqueous systems.CTP-11 solutions at 10.0 mg L−1 were irradiated by simulated sunlight. The intensity of the drug decreased by 90% after 7.5 days of irradiation and no significant reduction of absorbance values was observed after 13 days.A sensitive UHPLC-MS/MS method was developed employing a hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap mass spectrometer, that is able to work in data-dependent acquisition mode and to obtain information about the compounds formed during the photoirradiation. Moreover, a selected reaction monitoring method was built using the MS/MS fragmentation pattern of the compounds previously investigated. The method was validated considering LOD, LOQ, linearity, precision, selectivity, recovery and matrix effect. LOD and LOQ values were 0.02 and 0.05 ng mL−1, respectively, whereas MDL and MQL values in real water samples (river water, groundwater, well water, and wastewater) were lower than 0.05 and 0.2 ng mL−1, respectively.Eight photodegradation products were identified, among which five for the first time. Based on the MS and MS/MS fragmentation, the chemical structures of the degradation products were proposed. Hydrolysis experiments were carried out on the same solutions preserved in the dark, but no formation of other species was highlighted.The method was applied to several real samples: CPT-11 was detected and quantified only in a hospital effluent sample at the concentration of 0.41 ± 0.2 ng mL−1 together with the occurrence of PDP3.The outcomes of this study may be useful for updating the pollutant screening in water samples.

Based on field survey in the southwestern Yellow Sea (SWYS) during April–September 2017, the spatiotemporal variations in the hydrological characteristics and nutrient conditions were coupled and analyzed; the intra-seasonal variations in the upwelling in the front of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM) and impacts on nutrient transport were explored. The coastal area was controlled by the low-salinity high-nutrient Lubei Coastal Current, Subei Coastal Current, and Yangtze River Diluted Water from north to south; at bottom, the northeastern SWYS was controlled by the low-temperature high-salinity high-nutrient YSCWM. Temperature, salinity and nutrient fronts formed around YSCWM. The upwelling velocity in the front increased during April to late June and decreased in early September; the upwelled fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (0.29×10³-7.77×10³ μmol·m⁻²d⁻¹), phosphate (0.02×10³-0.27×10³ μmol·m⁻²d⁻¹) and silicate (0.98×10³-8.75×10³ μmol·m⁻²d⁻¹) showed similar variations during April–September. The upwelled nutrients could potentially contribute to local green tide development and phytoplankton growth during spring–summer.

The chromium (Cr) pollution in Bali gained public attention because the textile and screen-printing industry was reportedly dumping their waste into the river. Benoa Bay is the estuary of six rivers in Bali and is thought to be contaminated by Cr. In this research, we investigated the presence of Cr in surface water, sediment and plankton (as a base trophic level) in Benoa Bay, Bali. Thirty stations were used to investigate Cr in Benoa Bay. The results showed that at almost all stations, surface waters of Benoa Bay were not contaminated by Cr, meanwhile Cr was detected in plankton and sediment. This research found that the range of Cr concentrations was sediment > plankton > water. The Bioaccumulation Factor (BCF) between plankton-water was much higher than plankton-sediment.

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a global concern. We aim to quantify the extent of MP pollution in the coastal ecosystem of the Port Blair Bay, A&N Islands. Water, sediment, zooplankton, finfish, and shellfish samples were collected from the Port Blair Bay and analyzed for the presence of MP. Average concentrations of MP in water, sediment, zooplankton, finfish, and shellfishes were found to be 0.93 ± 0.59 particles per m³, 45.17 ± 25.23 particles per kilogram, 0.12 ± 0.07 pieces per zooplankter and 10.65 ± 7.83 particles per specimen, respectively. High amount of MP retention was observed in the zooplankton community. Maximum MP ingestion was observed in adult Carangoides malabaricus. Fiber was most abundant in water, sediment, and fish samples, followed by fragment and pellet. However, fragments were predominant in zooplankton. Nylon, acrylic, and ionomer surlyn were most abundant polymer types in the bay environment. These results demand further attention to combat plastic pollution in the coastal ecosystem.

The human health risk assessment associated with accumulation of nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) in the tissues (gills, livers and muscles) of grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) collected from the creek in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria was investigated. Surface water, sediment and fish samples were collected and analysed from June to September 2019; estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were determined. The mean concentration (mg/kg ww) of the tested metals followed the sequence: Cu (33.48 ± 15.54) > Cd (24.62 ± 12.11) > Pb (10.59 ± 9.12) > Cr (0.43 ± 0.66); while Ni was not detected in the sampled tissues. The HI for male and female (adults) are 7.612 and 7.840 respectively, while male and female (children) are 9.567 and 10.842 respectively.

This study investigated the sensitivity of two deepsea species using mortality of northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and polyp activity of stony coral (Lophelia pertusa) to dispersant, Corexit 9500 and aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, 2-methylnaphthalene, phenanthrene) in 96-h tests. Resulting hydrocarbon toxicity data were fit to the Target Lipid Model to generate predictive models and determine species sensitivity. Toxicity of chemically enhanced water accommodated fractions of Alaskan North Slope crude oil (ANS-oil) was also investigated with shrimp using nominal loading, total petroleum hydrocarbons and biomimetic extraction (BE) as oil exposure metrics. Coral were more sensitive to dispersant than shrimp while similar sensitivity was observed for hydrocarbons. Study and literature findings indicate deepsea species exhibit acute sensitivities to dispersant, hydrocarbons and oil that are comparable to pelagic species. Results support use of passive sampling methods to quantify dissolved oil for interpreting oil toxicity tests and suggest models for predicting time-dependence of toxicity warrant re-evaluation.
