International audience | The simultaneous fate of organic matter and 4 endocrine disruptors (3 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and benzo(a)pyrene) and nonylphenols (NP)) was studied during the anaerobic digestion followed by composting of sludge at lab-scale. Sludge organic matter was characterized, thanks to chemical fractionation and 3D fluorescence deciphering its accessibility and biodegradability. Total chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 41% and 56% during anaerobic digestion and composting, respectively. 3D fluorescence highlighted the quality changes of organic matter. During continuous anaerobic digestion, organic micropollutants' removal was 22±14%, 6±5%, 18±9%, and 0% for fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, and nonylphenols, respectively. Discontinuous composting allowed to go further on the organic micropollutants' removal as 34±8%, 31±20%, 38±10%, and 52±6% of fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, and nonylphenols were dissipated, respectively. Moreover, the accessibility of PAH and NP expressed by their presence in the various sludge organic matter fractions and its evolution during both treatments was linked to both the quality evolution of the organic matter and the physicochemical properties of the PAH and NP; the presence in most accessible fractions explained the amount of PAH and NP dissipated.

Growth regulator insecticides with juvenoid activity can affect the development and reproduction of non-target organisms such as crustaceans. In this perspective, our previous studies revealed deleterious effects of the juvenoid fenoxycarb at 5 μg L −1 on the embryogenesis and at 50 μg L −1 on the reproductive behavior of the amphipod Gammarus fossarum. In the present study, to determine whether data generated with one amphipod species can be extended to other gammarid species, we tested the effects of a 5 μg L −1 fenoxycarb exposure on three European amphipod species: G. fossarum, Gammarus roeseli, and Echinogammarus longisetosus. We exposed individually 60 freshly fertilized females to fenoxycarb throughout the entire oogenesis/embryogenesis cycle (i.e., 19 days). In newborn individuals from exposed embryos, we measured both pigmentation and lipid reserve impairments while in exposed females, we observed reproductive behavior. At 5 μg L −1 fenoxycarb, reproductive behavior was only altered in G. fossarum. International audience | Pyrolysis of waste materials to produce biochar is an excellent and suitable alternative supporting a circular bio-based economy. One of the properties attributed to biochar is the capacity for sorbing organic contaminants, which is determined by its composition and physicochemical characteristics. In this study, the capacity of waste-derived biochar to retain volatile fuel organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and fuel oxygenates (FO)) from artificially contaminated water was assessed using batch-based sorption experiments. Additionally, the sorption isotherms were established. The results showed significant differences between BTEX and FO sorption on biochar, being the most hydrophobic and non-polar contaminants those showing the highest retention. Furthermore, the sorption process reflected a multilayer behaviour and a relatively high sorption capacity of the biochar materials. Langmuir and Freundlich models were adequate to describe the experimental results and to detect general differences in the sorption behaviour of volatile fuel organic compounds. It was also observed that the feedstock material and biochar pyrolysis conditions had a significant influence in the sorption process. The highest sorption capacity was found in biochars produced at high temperature (> 400 °C) and thus rich in aromatic C, such as eucalyptus and corn cob biochars. Overall, waste-derived biochar offers a viable alternative to be used in the remediation of volatile fuel organic compounds from water due to its high sorption capacity.

The aim of this study was to characterize qualitatively and quantitatively the composition of the main rhizodeposits emitted from maize (Zea mays) under Cd stress, in order to discuss their role in Cd availability and tolerance. Maize was grown for 6weeks in sand at four Cd exposure levels (0, 10, 20, and 40M Cd in nutrient solution) and two types of rhizodeposits were collected at the end of cultivation period. Mucilage and other molecules adhering to rhizospheric sand were extracted with a buffer before root exudates were collected by diffusion into water. Total carbon, proteins, amino acids, and sugars were analyzed for both rhizodeposit types and about 40 molecules were identified using GC-MS and LC-MS. Cadmium effect on plant morphology and functioning was slight, but consistent with previous works on Cd toxicity. However, rhizodeposition did tend to be impacted, with a decrease in total carbon, sugars, and amino acids correlating with an increasing Cd content. Such a decrease was not noticeable for proteins in root exudates. These observations were confirmed by the same trends in individual compound contents, although the results were generally not statistically significant. Many of the molecules determined are well-known to modify, whether directly or indirectly, Cd speciation and dynamics in the soil and could play a role in Cd tolerance.

International audience | Pollution from bromine and some of its related compounds is currently unregulated in soil from Russia and other countries,and tools for sound assessment of environmental impacts of bromine contamination are largely missing. Hence, assessingpotential implications for humans and ecosystems of bromine soil contamination is urgently needed, which requires the combi-nation of measured soil concentrations from environmental studies and quantified potential toxicity impacts. To address this need,we used data from an experimental study assessing bromine in soils (384 samples) of Tomsk oblast, Russia, starting frommeasured concentrations obtained by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis in an earlier study. From these data, we calcu-lated the bromine mass in soils and used these as starting point to characterize related cumulative impacts on human health andecosystems in the Tomsk region, using a global scientific consensus model for screening-level comparative toxicity character-ization of chemical emissions. Results show that the combination of sampling methodology with toxicity characterizationtechniques presents a new approach to be used in environmental studies aimed at environmental assessment and analysis of aterritory. Our results indicate that it is important to account for substance-specific chemical reaction pathways and transferprocesses, as well as to consider region-specific environmental characteristics. Our approach will help complement environmen-tal assessment results with environmental sustainability elements, to consider potential tradeoffs in impacts, related to soilpollution, in support of improved emission and pollution reduction strategies.

This study presents experimental results of internal distribution and elimination rates of two perfluorinated acid compounds, namely perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) in adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to three temperatures. Dietary exposure experiments were conducted at 7 °C, 11 °C, and 19 °C and liver, blood, muscle, brain, and kidney were sampled for analysis. PFOS concentrations were comparable to or exceeded those of PFHxS, while PFHxS was eliminated faster than PFOS, whatever the temperature. Internal distribution changed significantly for both substances when fish were exposed to a range of temperatures from 7 to 19 °C. Indeed, PFOS and PFHxS relative distribution increased in blood, liver, and brain while they decreased in muscle when the water temperature rose. The water temperature variation affected the elimination half-lives, depending on the substances and organs.

Atrazine is presently one of the most abundantly used herbicides in the United States, and a common contaminant of natural water bodies and drinking waters in high-use areas. Dysregulation of reproductive processes has been demonstrated in atrazine exposed fish, including alteration of key endocrine pathways on hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. However, the potential for atrazine-induced transgenerational inheritance of reproductive effects in fish has not been investigated. The present study examined the effects of early developmental atrazine exposure on transgenerational reproductive dysregulation in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). F0 medaka were exposed to atrazine (ATZ, 5 or 50 μg/L), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2, 0.002 or 0.05 μg/L), or solvent control during the first twelve days of development with no subsequent exposure over three generations. This exposure overlapped with the critical developmental window for embryonic germ cell development, gonadogenesis, and sex determination. Exposed males and females of the F0 generation were bred to produce an F1 generation, and this was continued until the F2 generation. Sperm count and motility were not affected in F0 males; however, both parameters were significantly reduced in the males from F2 Low EE2 (0.002 μg/L), Low ATZ (5 μg/L), and High ATZ (50 μg/L) lineages. Fecundity was unaffected by atrazine or EE2 in F0 through F2 generations; however, fertilization rate was decreased in low atrazine and EE2 exposure lineages in the F2 generation. There were significant transgenerational differences in expression of the genes involved in steroidogenesis and DNA methylation. These results suggest that although early life exposure to atrazine did not cause significant phenotypes in the directly exposed F0 generation, subsequent generations of fish were at greater risk of reproductive dysfunction.

Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are considered emerging environmental pollutants, posing potential risks for human and animal health: the misuse of antimicrobials in food-producing animals could favour the maintenance and spread of resistances (RMS) in bacteria. The occurrence of ARGs in Italian swine farming – which has specific characteristics – was investigated in order to explore RMS dynamics. Two farrow-to-finish pig farms were longitudinally monitored: faecal samples from animals and environmental samples were collected. DNA was extracted and tetA, ermB, qnrS and mcr1 ARGs were analysed by qPCR for their ability to confer resistance to highly or critically important antimicrobials (CIAs). Moreover, 16SrDNA gene was analysed to assess bacterial abundance. ermB and tetA genes were found in animal samples and manure samples. On the contrary, mcr1 was exclusively found in weaners, while qnrS occurred in all animal categories but sows and finishers. Among the analysed genes, ermB and tetA showed the highest absolute and relative abundances. Our results indicate that ermB and tetA ARGs are widely disseminated in the explored farms, suggesting efficient maintenance among bacteria and persistence in the environment. Interestingly, the presence of qnrS and mcr1, limited to just a few animal categories, highlights inefficient dissemination of these genes in the farm environment, in particular for mcr1, a stable plasmid gene conferring resistance to the last-resort antimicrobial, colistin. Paying close attention only to the finishing phase would have hampered the discovery of resistances to CIAs at farm level, which we instead identified thanks to an intensive longitudinal monitoring programme.
