Antimony Accumulation, Growth Performance, Antioxidant Defense System and Photosynthesis of Zea mays in Response to Antimony Pollution in Soil
2011
Pan, Xiangliang | Zhang, Daoyong | Chen, Xi | Bao, Anming | Li, Lanhai
Antimony (Sb) pollution in the downstream farmland soil of the Sb mine area has been of a great environmental concern to the local residents. However, effects of Sb on the growth and physiology of crops are still not well known. In the present study, Sb uptake and its effect on growth, antioxidant defense system, and photosynthesis of maize (Zea mays) were investigated. Our results demonstrated that accumulation of Sb in the maize increased with increasing Sb level in the soil. Sb could be easily translocated from root to shoot with a translocation coefficient over 2.05. Plant growth and biomass were reduced due to Sb pollution. Under Sb stress, the activities of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutases (SOD), and catalase (CAT) responded differently. The activities of POD and SOD were inhibited when the soil Sb concentration was higher than 50 mg kg−1. CAT activity showed an increasing trend with increasing soil Sb concentration. Chlorophyll synthesis and the maximum photochemical efficiency (F V/F M) were also inhibited significantly under stress of high-level Sb in soil.

2011
Bacchetta, Carla | Cazenave, Jimena | Parma, M. J. (Maria Julieta)
Among the most extensively used compounds for the pest control in Argentinean crops is the organochlorine endosulfan. The sublethal effects of the commercial endosulfan formulation on hematology and lipid peroxidation (LPO) of the neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus were investigated. Firstly, we calculated acute toxicity (LC50) in order to define sublethal concentrations (0, 1.2, and 2.4 μg L−1). Hematological and oxidative stress responses were assessed at 24, 48, and 96 h. Endosulfan exposure significantly diminished the hemoglobin concentration, mean cell hemoglobin, and total plasma protein and increased white blood cells count and plasma glucose after 96 h. Exposed fish showed an alteration of the differential leukocytes count, evidenced by more thrombocytes and monocytes and less lymphocytes and neutrophils. Endosulfan increased LPO levels in intestine, liver, and brain in both sublethal concentrations. The present results suggest that endosulfan produces biochemical and physiological alterations, including immunological disorders, and it is a good inductor of oxidative stress in P. lineatus.

2011
Caselles-Osorio, Aracelly | Villafañe, Patricia | Caballero, Vanessa | Manzano, Yelena
Subsurface-flow constructed wetlands technology (SSFW) has been used successfully for treating sanitary wastewater throughout North America and Europe. However, treatment wetland technologies have not been used extensively in the tropics. To advance tropical studies, a pilot-scale SSFW was constructed on the campus of the University of the Atlantic in Barranquilla, Colombia. The systems performance was monitored from January to July of 2009. The treatment system consisted of a 760-L septic tank followed by three mesocsom-scale subsurface-flow constructed wetlands in parallel arrangement. Clarified wastewater was batch loaded to each unit at a rate of 53 L/m2/day to affect a hydraulic retention time of approximately 3 days. One of the treatment units served as a non-planted control (gravel only), while the other two treatment units were planted with either Eriochloa aristata or Eleocharis mutata. The objective of this study was to evaluate the comparative efficacy of the treatment units (planted vs. unplanted), with respect to their abilities to augment treatment of septic tank effluent (sanitary wastewater). Monitored parameters included plant biomass, oxidation–reduction potential, chemical oxygen demand (COD), temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia–nitrogen (NH4 +–N) nitrate– and nitrite–nitrogen (NO3–N, NO2–N), phosphates (PO4 −), and coliform bacteria. Total biomass (dry matter) was 2.84 and 0.87 Kg/m2 for E. aristata and E. mutata, respectively. Redox potential in the plant rizospheres averaged −172 mV (±164.1) in E. aristata, 29 mV (±251.1) in E. mutata, and 32 mV (±210.5) in the unplanted control. COD removal was superior in planted vs. non-planted systems (>75% vs. 47%). Ammonia and total phosphorus removal averaged 69% and 85%, respectively, in planted systems versus 31% and 59% in the unplanted system. Removal of total and fecal coliforms averaged 96%. Results of this pilot study revealed that SSFW technology in the tropics can provide significant removal of organic matter, nutrients, and bacteria from clarified sanitary wastewater.

2011
Gómez-Lavín, Sonia | Gorri, Daniel | Irabien, Ángel
Surface coastal sediments (0–10 cm) collected from three natural environments on the Spanish Northern Atlantic Coast were analyzed so as to determine concentrations of 6 marker polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 12 dioxin-like PCBs (dl-PCBs) and 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). An analytical procedure based on Soxhlet extraction followed by an automated cleanup and final high-resolution gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry was applied for the determination of the persistent organic pollutants. Marker PCB levels ranged from 385.5 to 4,060.9 pg/g dry weight (d.w.) showing a similar congener pattern in all sediments dominated by the less volatile congeners PCB 153 and PCB 138. Linear correlations were found between marker and dl-PCBs. Toxicity equivalent values were calculated for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs reaching its maximum at 0.52 pg WHO1998-TEQ/g d.w., with an average dl-PCBs contribution on the toxicity of the samples of 75%, and showing to be in good agreement with background levels in the North-East Atlantic Ocean Coasts of nearly 1 pg/g WHO1998-TEQ d.w. Dimensionless environmental quality criteria were much lower than 1 indicating the low probability to induce ecotoxicological impacts.

2011
Malamis, Simos | Katsou, Evina | Haralambous, Katherine J.
This work examined the removal of heavy metals in a system consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) or microfiltration (MF) membranes combined with sludge and minerals. The metals under examination were Ni(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II), while the system performance was investigated with respect to several operating parameters. Metal removal was achieved through various processes including chemical precipitation, biosorption, adsorption, ion exchange, and finally retention of the metals by the membranes. The pH had a profound effect on metal removal, as the alkaline environment favored the metal removal process. The use of sludge resulted in increased levels of metal uptake which was further enhanced with the addition of minerals. The metal removal mechanisms depended on the pH, the metal, and mineral type. The combined sludge–mineral–UF system could effectively remove metal ions at an alkaline environment (pH = 8), meeting the US EPA recommended long-term reuse limits of lead and copper and the short-term reuse limits of nickel and zinc for irrigation purposes, provided that specific mineral dosages were added.

2011
Eide, Ingvar | Berg, Toril | Thorvaldsen, Bodil | Christensen, Guttorm N. | Savinov, Vladimir | Larsen, Jorunn
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) have been identified and quantified in dated layers of freshwater and marine sediments in Norway. Furthermore, profiles of the individual PAH (22 different) have been used to evaluate possible PAH sources. There is a significant increase in total PAH levels (sum of the 22 PAH) in freshwater sediments from the south-western part of Norway representing the 1800–1950 period, whereas the concentrations have decreased with a factor of approximately four since the 1950s. This pronounced trend was observed in two independent surveys. In northern Norway, the PAH levels in lake sediments have increased slightly during the past decades. In spite of this, the levels are considerably lower than in lake sediments from the south-western part of Norway. In fact, the PAH levels are decreasing northwards on the Norwegian mainland for both freshwater and marine surface sediments. Generally, the regional total PAH levels are higher (three to four times) in freshwater sites compared to the corresponding marine sites. Results of PAH source allocation indicate that pyrogenic sources are important in almost all sediment samples studied. Sediment samples were also collected at Svalbard where the local coal reserve is the major contributor to PAH.

2011
Grainger, Sarah | Fu, George Yuzhu | Hall, Eric R.
Biosorption has potential to be an economical colour removal technology. As such, the colour removal potential of inactivated Aspergillus niger biomass was investigated for the treatment of activated sludge-treated pulp mill effluent from a northern bleached softwood kraft mill. Biomass pretreatment methods, effects of initial pH of the effluent and preparative biomass washing methods were examined. The most effective pretreatment method was found to be simple autoclaving of the biomass and this approach was applied in subsequent kinetic and isotherm batch studies. It was also found that the pH of the wastewater prior to addition of the biomass affected the biosorption rate and the solubility of chromophores in pulp mill effluent. The results also indicated that biomass washing methods reduced the quantity of organic matter leached from the fungal biomass during application. The kinetic study revealed that colour removal by biosorption occurred most readily in the first 8 h and could be described adequately by both the Lagergren and Ho et al. models. The maximum colour removal was over 900 TCU, with a biomass dose of about 20 g/L. The isotherm study data were fitted with the BET isotherm model. The results indicated that adsorption occurred in a multi-layer fashion and that physical adsorption was the main mechanism contributing to the biosorption. Therefore, dead A. niger biomass was concluded to be a promising alternative for colour removal from pulp mill effluent.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a novel adsorbent (Fe(III)-AM-PGMACell), Iron(III)-coordinated amino-functionalized poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-grafted cellulose for the adsorption of arsenic(V) from aqueous solutions. The Fe(III)-AM-PGMACell was prepared through graft copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto cellulose (Cell) in the presence of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker using benzoyl peroxide initiator, followed by treatment with ethylenediamine and ferric chloride in the presence of HCl. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption efficiency of Fe(III)-AM-PGMACell towards As(V) ions. The contact time to attain equilibrium and the optimum pH were 90 min and 6.0, respectively. More than 99.0% adsorption was achieved from an initial concentration of 25.0 mg/L. A two-step pseudo-first-order kinetic model agreed well with the dynamic behavior for the adsorption process. Equilibrium data fitted well with Sips isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity of 78.8 mg/g at 30°C. The desorption of As(V) was achieved over 98.0% with 0.1 M NaCl solution.

The aim if this study was to assess the distribution of mercury in water, suspended particulate matter, surface sediments and biota from the Sado estuary, which, for the most part, is classified as a natural reserve, so as to evaluate its environmental quality status in terms of mercury contamination. Besides the diffuse sources of mercury coming into the Sado estuary, there are also additional contributions from the northern industrial zone and from the urban areas within the system. Applying national and international guidelines to different environmental matrices, the results obtained show that the system does not seem to be under environmental risk as far as mercury contamination is concerned. These quality guidelines can be used to rank and prioritise sites of concern. Hence, the area at the northern industrialised area deserves particular attention. The concentration of mercury in sediments of this area (0.54 mg kg⁻¹) simultaneously succeeded the European Union Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) reference value, the OSPAR Convention Ecotoxicological Assessment Criteria (EACs) and is classified as class 2 in degree of contamination by the National legislation, which implies some legal restrictive rules. Considering the stations close to urbanised areas, one exceeded the OSPAR EACs for dissolved mercury, whilst the other exceeded the EU-WFD reference value for mercury concentrations in sediments. No statistical significant relations were found between mercury concentrations in biota (Ulva sp, Hediste diversicolor, Scrobicularia plana, Cerstoderma edule and Carcinus maenas) and in the abiotic matrices (sediment and water column, including mercury in its dissolved form and associated to suspended particulate matter). This paper provides an overview of the guidelines for Hg proposed for a considerable number of coastal systems of the northern hemisphere and highlights the complex interactions of Hg in the different environmental compartments in low contaminated systems.

2011
Elgh-Dalgren, Kristin | Arwidsson, Zandra | Ribé, Veronica | Waara, Sylvia | von Kronhelm, Thomas | van Hees, Patrick A. W.
Two commercially available aerobic bioremediation methods (Daramend® and BioSan) were utilized to study the aerobic biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and the effect of the simultaneously present arsenic. The soil was collected at an old wood preservation site, and the initial PAH₁₆-concentration was 46 mg/kg, with mainly high molecular weight congeners. The As concentration was 105 mg/kg with low availability as assessed with sequential extraction. To enhance the availability of PAH, the effect of a nonionic surfactant was evaluated. Degradation of both low and high molecular weight PAH was observed; however, after 30 weeks, the degradation was generally low and no treatment was significantly better than the others. The treatments had, on the other hand, an effect on As remobilization, with increased As concentration in the available fraction after treatment. This may be due to both the microbial activity and the presence of anoxic microsites in the soil. The overall efficiency of the biological treatment was further evaluated using the standardized ecotoxicity test utilizing Vibrio fischeri (Microtox®). The toxicity test demonstrated that the bioremediation led to an increase in toxicity, especially in treatments receiving surfactant. The surfactant implied an increase in contaminant availability but also a decrease in surface tension, which might have contributed to the overall toxicity increase.
