Plastic pollution in the natural environment is causing increasing concern at both the local and global scale. Understanding the dispersion of plastic through the environment is of key importance for the effective implementation of preventive measures and cleanup strategies. Over the past few years, various models have been developed to estimate the transport of plastics in rivers, using limited plastic observations in river systems. However, there is a large discrepancy between the amount of plastic being modelled to leave the river systems, and the amount of plastic that has been found in the seas and oceans. Here, we investigate one of the possible causes of this mismatch by performing an extensive uncertainty analysis of the riverine plastic export estimates. We examine the uncertainty from the homogenisation of observations, model parameter uncertainty, and underlying assumptions in models. To this end, we use the to-date most complete time-series of macroplastic observations (macroplastics have been found to contain most of the plastic mass transported by rivers), coming from three European rivers. The results show that model structure and parameter uncertainty causes up to four orders of magnitude, while the homogenisation of plastic observations introduces an additional three orders of magnitude uncertainty in the estimates. Additionally, most global models assume that variations in the plastic flux are primarily driven by river discharge. However, we show that correlations between river discharge (and other environmental drivers) and the plastic flux are never above 0.5, and strongly vary between catchments. Overall, we conclude that the yearly plastic load in rivers remains poorly constrained.

Numerous toxicological studies have shown that ingestion of pesticides can induce physiological stress in breeding birds, with adverse consequences on egg laying parameters and offspring quality through parental effects. However, previous studies do not mimic current levels of pesticide residues in typical landscapes, and they do not consider potential cocktail effects of pesticides as they occur in the wild. Herein, we explored whether realistic pesticide exposure affected reproduction parameters and offspring condition through parental effects in Grey partridge. We fed 24 breeding pairs with either seeds from conventional agriculture crops treated with various pesticides during cropping, or organic grains without pesticide residues as controls. The conventional and organic grain diets mimicked food options potentially encountered by wild birds in the field. The results showed that ingesting low pesticide doses over a long period had consequences on reproduction and offspring quality without altering mortality in parents or chicks. Compared with organic pairs, conventional pairs yielded smaller chicks at hatching that had a lower body mass index at 24 days old. Additionally, these chicks displayed lower haematocrit when body mass index was higher. Therefore, ingestion of conventional grains by parents resulted in chronic exposure to pesticide residues, even at low doses, and this had detrimental consequences on offspring. These results demonstrate a sublethal effect of pesticide residues through parental effects. The consequences of parental exposure on chicks might partly explain the decline in wild Grey partridge populations, which raises questions for avian conservation and demography if current agrosystem approaches are continued.

This study reports the results obtained from toxicological analyses of different types of baits referred to the laboratory of the Toxicology Area (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cáceres, Spain) over a 17-year period (2002–2018). These baits were suspicious materials found in the environment of the region of Extremadura (Western Spain), where such malpractices are a problem to be addressed, as wide livestock farming and hunting activities are combined with a significant wealth of wildlife (especially birds of prey). A total of 246 baits, including 32 commercial chemical products to be used in baits, were analysed. Samples from 183 cases were received and classified according to the material used for their preparation and the toxic substance found. Overall, the most common bait consisted of meat preparations (56.3% of cases) intended to eliminate predators considered ‘annoying’ for livestock and hunting practices, such as carnivores and scavengers. It should be noted that contact baits (as fenthion-impregnated perches) were also detected (7.6%). Regarding the substances detected, anticholinesterase compounds (organophosphates and carbamates) were the most commonly used substances for the preparation of baits (detected in 85.3% of positive baits). Moreover, 8% of the positive baits presented more than one toxic substance in their composition. Due to the types of toxic compounds and the methods used to prepare the baits, this study shows that the malicious use of highly toxic substances in the environment to kill wildlife is a common and current issue and poses a serious risk to different species.

En este estudio se presentan los resultados obtenidos de los análisis toxicológicos de diferentes tipos de cebos remitidos al laboratorio del Área de Toxicología (Facultad de Veterinaria, C'aceres, España) durante un periodo de 17 años (2002-2018). Estos cebos eran materiales sospechosos encontrados en el entorno de la región de Extremadura (oeste de España), donde este tipo de malas prácticas son un problema a abordar, ya que amplias actividades ganaderas y cinegéticas se combinan con una importante riqueza de fauna silvestre (especialmente aves rapaces). Un total de 246 cebos incluidos 32 productos químicos comerciales para su uso en cebos, fueron analizados. Se recibieron muestras de 183 casos recibidas y clasificadas según el material utilizado para su preparación y la sustancia tóxica encontrada. En conjunto, el cebo más común consistió en preparados cárnicos (56,3% de los casos) destinados a eliminar depredadores considerados "molestos" para la ganadería y la caza, como carnívoros y carroñeros. Cabe señalar que también se detectaron cebos de contacto (como perchas impregnadas de fentión) (7,6%). En cuanto a las sustancias detectadas, los compuestos anticolinesterásicos (organofosforados y carbamatos) fueron las sustancias más utilizadas para la preparación de cebos (detectados en el 85,3% de los cebos positivos). Además, el 8% de los cebos positivos presentaban más de una sustancia tóxica en su composición. Predicting the toxicity of effluent exposures, which vary in duration, composition, and concentration, poses a challenge for ecological risk assessments. Effluent discharges may frequently result in the exposure of aquatic organisms to high concentrations of mixed contaminants for short durations. In the receiving environment effluents will undergo dilution and physical or chemical processes that further reduce contaminant concentrations at varying rates. To date, most studies comparing toxicity risks of continuous and pulsed contaminant exposures have focused on individual contaminants. In this study, the toxicity to the tropical euryhaline copepod Acartia sinjiensis of two complex effluents was assessed, comparing 6- and 18-h pulses and 78-h continuous exposures. Observations of larval development success and population size were completed after a 78-h incubation period, to observe for latent effects after pulse exposures. The chemical compositions of the effluents were assessed over time and different contaminants (i.e., metals, ammonia or organics) declined at differing rates. These were characterized as either a minimal, steady, or rapid decline. Nauplii development and population after 78 h were more impacted by effluent exposures following an 18-h pulse, compared to a 6-h pulse. Based on pulse-exposure concentrations, the 50% effect concentrations (EC50) were similar for continuous and 18-h exposures but up to 3-fold greater (lower toxicity) for the shorter 6-h exposures. Time-weighted average concentrations did not accurately predict toxicity from pulse exposures of the effluents. Concentration-addition toxicity modelling using toxicity data from pulse exposures of single contaminants was useful for predicting the toxicity of chemical mixtures exposed for varying durations. Recommendations for modified approaches to assessing risks of short-term effluent discharges are discussed.

The intensification of anomalous events of seawater warming and the co-occurrence with local anthropogenic stressors are threatening coastal marine habitats, including seagrasses, which form extensive underwater meadows. Eutrophication highly affects coastal environments, potentially summing up to the widespread effects of global climate changes. In the present study, we investigated for the first time in seagrasses, the transcriptional response of different plant organs (i.e., leaf and shoot apical meristem, SAM) of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica growing in environments with a different history of nutrient enrichment. To this end, a mesocosm experiment exposing plants to single (nutrient enrichment or temperature increase) and multiple stressors (nutrient enrichment plus temperature increase), was performed. Results revealed a differential transcriptome regulation of plants under single and multiple stressors, showing an organ-specific sensitivity depending on plants' origin. While leaf tissues were more responsive to nutrient stress, SAM revealed a higher sensitivity to temperature treatments, especially in plants already impacted in their native environment. The exposure to stress conditions induced the modulation of different biological processes. Plants living in an oligotrophic environment were more responsive to nutrients compared to plants from a eutrophic environment. Evidences that epigenetic mechanisms were involved in the regulation of transcriptional reprogramming were also observed in both plants’ organs. These results represent a further step in the comprehension of seagrass response to abiotic stressors pointing out the importance of local pressures in a global warming scenario.

During the last decades, the coastal areas of Morocco have witnessed an intense socioeconomic development associated with a continuous population growth and urban extension. This has led to an overexploitation of coastal aquifers leading to a degradation of their water quality. In order to obtain large scale overview on the quality status of Morocco's coastal aquifers (MCA) to assist national water managers to make informed decisions, a comprehensive scrutinization of the MCA against common indicators and using unified methods is essential. In this study, databases from thirteen MCA were analyzed, using multivariate statistical approaches and graphical methods in order to investigate the degree of mineralization in each aquifer and to identify the main salinization processes prevailing in groundwater. The results showed that the dominant groundwater types are Na–Cl, Ca–Mg–Cl, Ca–Mg–SO₄, Ca–Mg–HCO₃ and Ca–HCO₃–Cl. The Gibbs diagram and the seawater contribution (0–37%) indicate that the mineralization is mainly due to the seawater intrusion and water-rock interaction. The salinity degree diagram illustrates that almost all groundwater samples are located in the moderate to very saline zone, indicating that MCA are recharged by water from variable sources. The groundwater quality assessment shows a deterioration, particularly by seawater intrusion and significant nitrate pollution. The temporal evolution confirm that the MCA are influenced by seawater namely in the Atlantic part. The Wilcox and USSL diagram indicate that the majority of sampled water are unsuitable for irrigation uses. In addition, and by referring to the WHO and the Moroccan standards for water potability, large number of samples from the groundwaters of the MCA is not fully adequate for drinking purposes. A set of management actions (e,g., artificial recharge) are proposed in order to mitigate the effect of groundwater overexploitation and seawater intrusion to ensure the sustainability of MCA.

International audience | During the last decades, the coastal areas of Morocco have witnessed an intense socioeconomic development associated with a continuous population growth and urban extension. This has led to an overexploitation of coastal aquifers leading to a degradation of their water quality. In order to obtain large scale overview on the quality status of Morocco's coastal aquifers (MCA) to assist national water managers to make informed decisions, a comprehensive scrutinization of the MCA against common indicators and using unified methods is essential. In this study, databases from thirteen MCA were analyzed, using multivariate statistical approaches and graphical methods in order to investigate the degree of mineralization in each aquifer and to identify the main salinization processes prevailing in groundwater. The results showed that the dominant groundwater types are Na–Cl, Ca–Mg–Cl, Ca–Mg–SO4, Ca–Mg–HCO3 and Ca–HCO3–Cl. The Gibbs diagram and the seawater contribution (0–37%) indicate that the mineralization is mainly due to the seawater intrusion and water-rock interaction. The salinity degree diagram illustrates that almost all groundwater samples are located in the moderate to very saline zone, indicating that MCA are recharged by water from variable sources. The groundwater quality assessment shows a deterioration, particularly by seawater intrusion and significant nitrate pollution. Conservation agriculture through no-till based on cropping systems with high biomass-C input, is a strategy to restoring the carbon (C) lost from natural capital by conversion to agricultural land. We hypothesize that cropping systems based on quantity, diversity and frequency of biomass-C input above soil C dynamic equilibrium level can recover the natural capital. The objectives of this study were to: i) assess the C-budget of land use change for two contrasting climatic environments, ii) estimate the C turnover time of the natural capital through no-till cropping systems, and iii) determine the C pathway since soil under native vegetation to no-till cropping systems. In a subtropical and tropical environment, three types of land use were used: a) undisturbed soil under native vegetation as the reference of pristine level; b) degraded soil through continuous tillage; and c) soil under continuous no-till cropping system with high biomass-C input. At the subtropical environment, the soil under continuous tillage caused loss of 25.4 Mg C ha⁻¹ in the 0–40 cm layer over 29 years. Of this, 17 Mg C ha⁻¹ was transferred into the 40–100 cm layers, resulting in the net negative C balance for 0–100 cm layer of 8.4 Mg C ha⁻¹ with an environmental cost of USD 1968 ha⁻¹. The 0.59 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ sequestration rate by no-till cropping system promote the C turnover time (soil and vegetation) of 77 years. For tropical environment, the soil C losses reached 27.0 Mg C ha⁻¹ in the 0–100 cm layer over 8 years, with the environmental cost of USD 6155 ha⁻¹, and the natural capital turnover time through C sequestration rate of 2.15 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ was 49 years. The results indicated that the particulate organic C and mineral associate organic C fractions are the indicators of losses and restoration of C and leading C pathway to recover natural capital through no-till cropping systems.

In fish, the gut microbiome plays a crucial role in homeostasis and health and is affected by several organic and inorganic environmental contaminants. Amphidromous fish are sentinel species, particularly exposed to these stressors. We used whole metagenome sequencing to characterize the gut microbiome of wild European eels (Anguilla anguilla) at a juvenile stage captured from three sites with contrasted pollution levels in term of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. The objectives were to identify what parameters could alter the gut microbiome of this catadromous fish and to explore the potential use of microbiota as bioindicators of environment quality. We identified a total of 1079 microbial genera. Overall, gut microbiome was dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. Alpha and beta diversity were different amongst sites and could be explained by a reduced number of environmental and biological factors, specifically the relative abundance of fish preys in eels’ diet, PCB101, γHCH (lindane), transnonachlor and arsenic. Furthermore, we identified a series of indicator taxa with differential abundance between the three sites. Changes in the microbial communities in the gut caused by environmental pollutants were previously undocumented in European eels. Our results indicate that microbiota might represent another route by which pollutants affect the health of these aquatic sentinel organisms.

Estuaries are considered as important sources of the global emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Urbanized estuaries often experience eutrophication under strong anthropogenic activities. Eutrophication can enhance phytoplankton abundance, leading to carbon dioxide (CO₂) consumption in the water column. Only a few studies have evaluated the relationship between GHGs and eutrophication in estuaries. In this study, we assessed the concentrations and fluxes of CO₂, methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) in combination with a suite of biogeochemical variables in four sampling campaigns over two years in a highly urbanized tropical estuary in Southeast Asia (the Saigon River Estuary, Vietnam). The impact of eutrophication on GHGs was evaluated through several statistical methods and interpreted by biological processes. The average concentrations of CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O at the Saigon River in 2019–2020 were 3174 ± 1725 μgC-CO₂ L⁻¹, 5.9 ± 16.8 μgC-CH₄ L⁻¹ and 3.0 ± 4.8 μgN-N₂O L⁻¹, respectively. Their concentrations were 13–18 times, 52–332 times, and 9–37 times higher than the global mean concentrations of GHGs, respectively. While CO₂ concentration had no clear seasonal pattern, N₂O and CH₄ concentrations significantly differed between the dry and the rainy seasons. The increase in eutrophication status along the dense urban area was linearly correlated with the increase in GHGs concentrations. The presence of both nitrification and denitrification resulted in elevated N₂O concentrations in this urban area of the estuary. The high concentration of CO₂ was contributed by the high concentration of organic carbon and mineralization process. GHGs fluxes at the Saigon River Estuary were comparable to other urbanized estuaries regardless of climatic condition. Control of eutrophication in urbanized estuaries through the implantation of efficient wastewater treatment facilities will be an effective solution in mitigating the global warming potential caused by estuarine emissions.

Sea-based sources account for 32–50 % of total marine litter found at the European basins with the fisheries sector comprising almost 65 % of litter releases. In the south-east coastal waters of the Bay of Biscay this figure approaches the contribution of just the floating marine litter fraction. This study seeks to enhance knowledge on the distribution patterns of floating marine litter generated by the fisheries sector within the Bay of Biscay and in particular on target priority Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to reinforce marine litter prevention and mitigation policies. This objective is reached by combining the data on geographical distribution and intensity of fishing activity, long-term historical met-ocean databases, Monte Carlo simulations and Lagrangian modelling with floating marine litter source and abundance estimates for the Bay of Biscay. Results represent trajectories for two groups of fishing-related items considering their exposure to wind; they also provide their concentration within 34 MPAs. Zero windage coefficient is applied for low buoyant items not subjected to wind effect. Highly buoyant items, strongly driven by winds, are forced by currents and winds, using a windage coefficient of 4 %. Results show a high temporal variability on the distribution for both groups consistent with the met-ocean conditions in the area. Fishing-related items driven by a high windage coefficient rapidly beach, mainly in summer, and are almost non-existent on the sea surface after 90 days from releasing. This underlines the importance of windage effect on the coastal accumulation for the Bay of Biscay. Only around 20 % of particles escaped through the boundaries for both groups which gives added strength to the notion that the Bay of Biscay acts as accumulation region for marine litter. MPAs located over the French continental shelf experienced the highest concentrations (>75 particles/km²) suggesting their vulnerability and need for additional protection measures.

Sea-based sources account for 32-50 % of total marine litter found at the European basins with the fisheries sector comprising almost 65 % of litter releases. In the south-east coastal waters of the Bay of Biscay this figure approaches the contribution of just the floating marine litter fraction. This study seeks to enhance knowledge on the distribution patterns of floating marine litter generated by the fisheries sector within the Bay of Biscay and in particular on target priority Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to reinforce marine litter prevention and mitigation policies.
